Know some talented writers in 11th grade? Make sure their school knows about--& participates in--NCTE's Achievement Awards in Writing Contest. The prestigious contest honors top student writers. #sunchat#edchathttps://t.co/228NtioxYK
It seems appropriate to know the difference between formally & formerly in meaning and spelling before making proclamations & sporting costumes & props that prove you're a culture vulture. Oh ye of the sunken place. Don't confuse awake with #woke.

I worked with Black Educators writing about how they developed digital engagement skills, and how that might look different than my experiences as a white man.

When I teach, I make sure I point out to kids that literacy is important in all disciplines - in Technology, while kids think they are well-versed, we need to make sure what they have at their fingertips is useful and truthful! #sunchat
Google's Be Internet Awesome is a great tool to help students become more literate digitally and helps teach them how to be safe while online. #sunchat
Yesterday, the kids were on chrome books, and they asked me to spell something. I said, "you have the world before you, so open a tab and check it yourself!" They need to know the power of the digital world and use it to their advantage, in a positive way. #sunchat
Digital Literacy in the math classroom may look different than other classrooms. This week my students used Voki to create an avatar to explain the real number system and examples from each! Then they had the upload their Voki to Google Classroom. #sunchat
In ELA, I review vocabulary from all disciplines, and try to make connections back to what we are doing (Tier 1, 2 3 words), showing how vocabulary can be specific to disciplines. So important for kids to know vocabulary to "speak the language" in all classes. #sunchat

Digital literacy has a lot to do with mindset + strategies & tools. If we are open to taking risks, making mistakes, getting ‘connected’, collaborating, & working at blending traditional approaches with the digital world, there are no limits to our capacity for learning! #sunchat
Going digital in class is eye-opening. When they use "text-ese" in their Google Docs and then all the words have those wiggly red lines under them... they are like, "what do these lines mean?" Hey, check your spelling and write more formally, dude! #sunchat
You are so right. I had the same issue with students doing a mapping lab last week and struggling with vocab on the map. “Look up ‘marine west coast climate’ on the expensive tool the school has provided you!” #sunchat

Yes, grew up when the class taught you to "program", and now the "programs" come with interfaces that hide all that. Once again, they have it easy! *launches into the "I walked 5 miles in the snow to school* story...* @Willmdunn#sunchat
I remember just struggling with Word, or Excel, or even DOS as a kid to get what I wanted from it. We grew with the tech. It’s the only way to learn how to use the machine and software. Kids need to be put in that position more.
Being a pre-service teacher I've had the opportunity to see multiple one-to-one schools. Teaching students to be digitally literate not only saves time in the day, but also increases our students' productivity and learning along the way. #sunchat
Our district has moved to 1 on 1 this year! Just had PD on HyperDoc. Love the already made templates for science. Trick is finding links that are interactive and open ended for higher level learning. More than just content driven. #sunchat
Exactly, Branden, and it can make the class and learning fun for them! Teachers who are tech-wary may shy from using it, but no one says you need to use it all the time either. We need to balance. And, keep it on task as well. (It can get distracting!) #Sunchat@bnturner95

I hear this all the time. They are constantly asking how to spell words. I always tell them pull out your phone and check. They just want the easy way out. lol #sunchat
I think something I’m chewing on this morning is the limitations we have on helping Ss build digital literacy skills. We are still learning to navigate. How do we teach what isn’t natural for us? #sunchat
Savvy technologically can be very different than navigating human beings, online or off -- an adult skill. That said, I've heard of kids suggesting adults could learn a thing or two from them about digital citizenship. #sunchat

You’re so right about this. It’s unfair to assume that because of the year they were born that they know technology. It also makes a ridiculous assumption that all Ss have had a similar upbringing w/ tech. We have Ss w/ parents who don’t have phones, very limited tech. #sunchat
On Monday, October 15, 2018, volunteers from Operation Warm and TJX will distribute a new winter coat to every Brophy School student! https://t.co/uJjV0JDYe2
Exactly. We were told “they can still type on a Google Doc” as if typing was the skill we really try to teach. Never mind that they can’t research to find information to type about #sunchat
@Willmdunn I'm going to say yes - I don't think as much focus is spent on the "lessons of spelling" as in the past. I remember those lessons being pounded into my head, and now, the ELA programs we use don't seem to approach it with the same gusto. #sunchat
Are today’s students generally not as good at spelling compared to previous eras? I have no idea because, as a student, I only focused on my own. Now, as a teacher, I have students write frequently and it’s surprising how rife spelling issues are among the broader population.
While I love using tech in class when it enhances a lesson, there is much to be said for teaching face-to-face discussion skills where students can collaborate respectfully and express themselves with eye contact and sincerity! #sunchat *opens tab to check spelling of sincerity*
YES, I think spelling is still critical. We all make unintentional mistakes; that's what a "check" is for. With most words, you should be able to recognize the mistake you made. #engchat#sunchat
Yeah, I feel like free public school itself is the equalizer. It's great when districts have the $ for students to take home tech, but otherwise, give everyone the same access in school. We need to rethink homework anyway! #sunchat
That is a great question! Thankfully my school doesn't focus on homework, but these kids still should have the same opportunities to research etc. Some teachers will say they can go to the library. That is not as easy as it sounds as some kids have no support at home.

Yes! In the end we have to decide and prioritize the end game. I don’t want to end up in a world like WALL-E where we are behind a screen all day. Or “Ready Player One.” The goal is tech enhances face to face, not detracts #sunchat
Exactly what I do in 6th grade. When they are writing, if they know a word doesn't "look" right, they need to circle it. I want them recognizing that it's one they need to follow up on in a later draft. #sunchat
I absolutely agree Susan. Yes, tech can serve a great purpose at times, but only when it provides something to a lesson that you can't do without it. There is so much value in eye contact and face-to-face discussions and I think students often lack these skills today. #sunchat

My desire is Ts concepts about relationships and leadership can engage with students knowledge of technology to create digital concepts and learning. Imagine asking an S; hey, how does compassion apply to twitter? And get them to chew on and help answer #sunchat
Makes me think about how students likely have different levels of recognizing when something doesn't feel right. I know that sense when you're not spelling something right; others don't. #SunChat
Yes! They can look up words in a hard-copy dictionary or on @MerriamWebster online, which reminds them to stick with reliable sources -- so it's a digital literacy lesson, too. #SunChat

The more the kids READ, the more their brain will recognize words that don't "look" right. It's amazing how all the things we do connect in some way, isn't it? #sunchat 15 minutes of independent reading at the start of class is the answer, baby! :)
I love the independent reading at the start of the class. Some high school students just don't know how to read for pleasure. My son was one of those. Now he is out of college and loves to read #sunchat
yes! Sit them in groups, let them chat quietly while working. You'd be amazed that between the "kid" conversations, actual "work-related" conversations happen. Give them a chance! (think about staff mtgs. yes,we do sometimes have side convos about school!) #sunchat
Great intersection of digital literacy, digital citizenship, and self-directed learning. The chat today in general seemed to bridge these worlds. #DigiURI#DigCitDay#DigCitSummit#SunChat

Ts are the experts in concepts. Ss are more expert on tech in many ways. How do we combine these expertise to make a beautiful new thing! It’s like a Reese’s Peanut Butter cup! #sunchat
