WELCOME We have heard year round school would benefit Ss. If the pay for educators was commensurate with the time, could this work?
Topic:We've often heard that a yr round schl yr would benefit our Ss. If pay for edus was commensurate w/the time, could this work?
I think year round schooling could work and benefit students becuase they would not have so much lost knowledge during summer
It's time for Please refrain from using the hashtag for purposes other than the chat for the next 60 minutes. Thank you.

Teachers/future teachers, remember you were once a student too, be patient and understanding of where your students are.
Seems feasible; some schools already basically go year 'round. Wonder if burnout is worse in that model? … https://t.co/uld7F6b2tD

Welcome to --- thoughts re year round school?
Thanks Raquel... welcome to topic -> year round school
Now We have heard year round school would benefit Ss. If the pay for educators was commensurate with the time, could this work?
Year round schooling makes intuitive sense - 1 quarter / season. 10 weeks on, 3 weeks off. Downside? We LOVE our long summers
Good question... thoughts?
I think year round would be difficult for Ss to adjust to, but has lots of possible benefits
Can extending the school year but still relying on 20th century methodology really make a difference in the way kids are learning?

Year round school meaning increased number of days or just spread out without one long summer break
Thanks and welcome to So what should be done?
One thought: ongoing training (either or additional formal schooling for Ts) is trickier with a year-round model.

Metaphors can help link abstract concepts to concrete examples which should improve learning https://t.co/0frr9Pf1gU
if schools did year round school with more short breaks, students would benefit bc knowledge wouldn't be lost as quickly.
Thanks Allison... In your view, would year round school have more days than current school year?
Now THERE'S a question. Sometimes more is just 'more,' Not better, https://t.co/8UzEVF8ZuD
Can extending the school year but still relying on 20th century methodology really make a difference in the way kids are learning?
Methodology may have to adjust w/schools changing. kids that are high risk/poverty, benefits to them being in school more
The goal is for students to be literate in mathematics so that we can prepare them for a world where the subject is rapidly growing.
Makes lots of sense... so why aren't we doing year round school?
- it's certainly true that at-risk students do benefit from this model. Great comment.
YEAR ROUND SCHOOL won't make much difference if everyone does what they been doing the rest of the year.
Allison, Interesting point Adjust, how so?
I think it should be a local decision - made with family, teacher, student and board input.
In a year round school would some students and families lose out on a seasonal job to offset family expenses?
because we don't want it :) it's too familiar, too hard-wired into schools' DNA.
ANYONE OUT THERE expereinced with year round school?
another downside - there is a vibrant summer camp industry, really big in some communities/regions

- think you're dead right about not just extending the year w/o changing the curriculum. & shorter days?

What would a nationwide full school year do to the seasonal vacation industry in the US?
some industries / opportunities would be limited (or camps) bit new ones would crop up.

My wife taught in a year-round school and schduling was a nightmare. Ss in three levels had 3 different schedules - no accomodation.
Very interesting question. Related, would local economy lose seasonal workforce and revenue?

Year-round schl does some similar to typical working experience (short vacations) Wouldn't similating work be good for our HS Ss?
- some schools in UT go (mostly) year round, with periodic weeks off. Many Ts like it.
Doing more of the same things that don't work more will result in more of the same things. Year Round School or Regular School Year
In theory I like it as a concept, it would need an innovative curriculum though
Food for thought for all teachers--agree? disagree? https://t.co/P03NAtYhkh
Part of me feels like the rise of trump is a failure of American education to teach the fundamentals of and threats to democracy.
how has it impacted the students?
My brother goes to a school w/ a balanced calendar. It's 9 weeks followed by a 2 week break. Summer is only shorter by a week or two
tomwhitby: What would a nationwide full school year do to the seasonal vacation industry in the US?
On paper year-round is interesting, but the curriculum has to be different. Also, don't forget about the arts and sports.
Don't think radically changing the calendar wld improve things enough 2 justify. Would rather focus on teacher/leader development.
World needs to hear about successes in schools. Need repeatable stories

Yes, - some schools here in Utah do that. Some good elements to this calendar. https://t.co/x5NugwECVC
My brother goes to a school w/ a balanced calendar. It's 9 weeks followed by a 2 week break. Summer is only shorter by a week or two
WHY do we have the 'school year' that we have? Do those reasons still hold true? If not, then why do we hold on?
You are showing that there are ways to be innovative in scheduling. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.
These costs offset by lower summer childcare$ and food expenses with potential for work internships in HS voc ed?
- the calendar is balanced and Ss tend to keep the progress made. Less "summer slide!"
How would a year round academic schedule effect teacher performance?
Is its necessary to "keep up with the latest and greatest?" Is it about or ?
We started because of agrarian calendar. I would rather shrink the summer for teachers (more training) and extend day
We need the Ss at home to harvest the crops . No crops in your town? Well, that's just the way we have always done it
Great Question! Wouldn't it be more friendly to working parents if kids went to school year-round?
How would a year round academic schedule affect the infrastructure & utility costs? Most schools are not air conditioned.
As we chat about year round school let's not forget that the seconds and minutes make the school year matter...
- also, with the prevalence of summer schools, many Ts already go "year round."
tomwhitby: How would a year round academic schedule effect teacher performance?
tomwhitby: How would a year round academic schedule affect the infrastructure & utility costs? Most schools are not air conditioned.
I'd love to see some studies, but as a teacher I'd prefer shorter breaks b/c I think I'd be more productive overall.
- such a valid point. Particularly in the east/northeast (and anyplace where older buildings exist). Tough call.
Yup. We'd deny some kids a needed break from an environment that fails a lot of them. https://t.co/I7USg64Xgc
YEAR ROUND SCHOOL won't make much difference if everyone does what they been doing the rest of the year.
I agree needs to be reconceptualized esp W so many working moms & varied work schedules. 7 day school?
More that the industry, what happens to the possibility for children to spend prolonged periods at outdoor camps.

agree. Feels like the wrong place to start. Focus should be on engagement, T quality, curriculum, rigor.
Many year-round schools use an A,B,C track system so building is used full time. Result is 1/3 of Ss are off at any one time
like it how about parents? Original calendar designed for families
Imagine if teachers had 3-4 weeks of development and had a 6 week instead of 10 week summer vacation. That would be a game changer!
- working parents struggle w/ current schedule anyway. Year round may help.
How do we balance kids' seat time in school with kids' need for play outdoors in a year round academic schedule?
In year round schooling the concept of schools would need to evolve to more diverse and natural/outdoor experiential learning models
Two challenges; CALENDAR/Schedule and TRANSPORTATION for working families.
Much has to happen in order for year-round-school to have much positive impact on learning/teaching
$/resources that would go toward an extended school year would be better spent on expanding access to summer enrichment to all kids.
Great question, Here's where curriculum shifts and (natural-based learning, too?) come in.
Hey Jeremy... we need to do something, but what we do needs to be well thought out...
True, - the nice thing is, now that certain schools are trying the model, everyone can learn what works.
could be... but if shift to year-round-school is for parents (not students) they let's call it what it is...

We'll talk about helping students this time of year in 30 min : affordability, crisis, nudging, etc.
Better infrastructure designed for outdoor play, natural classrooms, active learning curriculum for all subjects
Balancing depends on age range of Ss: cognitive, affective, motor needs & parental concerns
Building a new calendar is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. You need to steer away from the iceberg first.
I don't think the biggest challenges would come from the country, but from teachers themselves. I could be wrong.
my thought was it should at least have a lot of support...Could be a win-win? Good for students AND good for parents.
Wouldn't that depend on the demographic? Some might relish a season off for different pursuits.
How might we scorch swift agendas in this uncertain time?
Thanks for clarification...
yes, Howard it will impact families... so how to handle?
I think there are more implications in such a change than folks have yet to realize. There would be push back from more
Sadly, we have NO definitive guidelines for 21st cent tchr need to believe, know, be able to DO based on demographic

Passion for your profession is exploring what is happening elsewhere, trying new things, and thinking about the possibilities ahead.
I feel that the country's unwillingness to change from what is comfortable limits our ability to be mobile in edu
Pay would have to be a consideration. Many T's work in the summer to supplement their pay now.
As a former band director the complexity of 1/3 of Ss being gone at all times is "interesting".
Question of the Day:
Does your school library have ?
wouldn't necessarily have to be more time, just shifted time. Don't think pay would be impacted. Just energy cost for AC.

Money is reason districts switch to Virtual schooling -tchrs & Ss work from home on THEIR SCHEDULE
by coming up with a better calendar and then slowly but surely convincing both authorities and schools
Does a year round calendar mean 365 days minus holidays or something less restrictive? would 3 out of 4 quarters in a year work?
this is why it's so important to teach literacy to all students, not just the ⭐️ students
I hear that - that's why I think it needs to be a very local decision. Some districts do both (year round for some)

Excellent advice, - so easy to launch something without a clear purpose. https://t.co/UsLss71k3d
Clearly define the purpose up front. Is it to save money or a better education? Be clear before launching.
