Hi, I'm Michelle and I teach HS science in FL.... but good ideas are everywhere and #5thchat always has lots to remind me or or teach me. I have no shame, I'll steal good ideas from anywhere!
Hi everyone, excited to join in on #5thchat and #shiftthis tonight! I teach AP Literature and Stagecraft Design, 13 years strong. I'm also a total bookworm and I love candy corn. 😀
A1: I'm trying one from @AaronHansen77 I'm holding up my hand and counting down to 5 as my kids raise theirs also. Then everyone turns attention to the next thing. #5thchat
A1 - My students and I use the "Give Me Five" callout to get the attention of everyone in the classroom for announcements & other quick bit of information.
(Excerpt from #LearnLAP)
#5thchat
Any of the call back attention getters that require Ss to use their voice. It "generally" stops them from talking & focuses them on you i.e. RED ROBIN! Yummmmm! #5thchat
Hi all, I teach 5-8 enrichment in NH, which basically means I have all the kids who are square pegs Irou of holes. This year 5/6 boys are my main clients. We do a lot of project based learning type stuff #5thchat
Ours are usually inside jokes like "Let's eat", "Grampa!" When we were learning about the importance of commas. Anyone can call it, as long as they use their power for good #5thchat
A1: I learned my fav strategy when I did summer camp in college. I whisper “if you can hear me clap once, twice, etc...). Students catch on and I rarely go past clapping twice. I don’t even have to use my voice. #5thchat
A1: I'm trying one from @AaronHansen77 I'm holding up my hand and counting down to 5 as my kids raise theirs also. Then everyone turns attention to the next thing. #5thchat
A1: I was observing an elementary school, and the teacher would have certain applauses to get their attention (roller-coaster, fireworks, rouundd of applause 😂) #5thchat
A2: Routines, routines, routines...students always know what we are doing from week to week. When they have looked forward to it, I get better engagement. #5thchat
A2: When you incorporate student choice in the learning, time becomes individualized. The best example I've found of this being done well is with @thedailycafe#5thchat
A2 Since I only have 40 minutes of classtime, I have predictable routines. I always have a message to start class with directions and HW. I also try to use timers to keep up on track for activities. #5thchat
A2- explicit routines and procedures! I try really hard not to lose time in transitions due to unclear expectations or waiting around. They know what to do the second they walk through the door. Takes a lot of direct instruction :) #5thchat
A2: Taking time (even though there's not enough time) to give them a brain break to re-energize and refocus them mentally and physically @GoNoodle is great for a brief break to get them back to learning #5thchat
A2: In a 45 minute class, my Ss are usually doing 3-4 different activities to engage with the content. Usually after they see the fun stuff we do, they are motivated to keep transition times short! #5thchat
A2: I've been having my seniors read quietly to start off our class period lately...kids don't always get that. They have chosen books and just the fact they have initial quiet moments indulging in something keeps the rest of the class period healthy and motivated. #5thchat
A2: I find that the students having an understanding of classroom expectations, procedures, and routines are best in having them stay on task. #5thchat
A2: I try to have expectations set early and not waste time on things that can be done ahead of time. Visual timers are also a great motivator. #5thchat
A3: Dressing up and being silly! I’m well known around my building for my silly hats, decorated suit coats, and turning everything into a game. Students don’t want to get off task because they don’t want to miss what silly thing I might do next! #5thchat
A3- When I remove the technology and go back to basics- PlayDoh, painters tape, watercolor. Use these materials to show me what you know. #5thchat
A lovely little idea I got from @mrdearybury :)
People love to talk about themselves. I like to start a class by just having conversation. Ss spend so much time looking at screens that they lack the time & experience to having quality conversations w others. They quickly want to engage in the convo I start. #5thchat
A3 Making them feel like they have a "say" in their learning. I would give them the different topics we needed to cover in social studies/science & they picked what we learned first #5thchat
A3: mixing up seating with random partners gets us a movement break and breaks up and cliquey social behavior. Alternatively, everyone e answers a prompt on the board, then shares at their table and one person shares out the main ideas of the group. #5thchat
A3: I also w/ my tutor Ss let them pick which @ReadWorks articles they wanted to read since I could generate a list based on their Lexile/ability level #5thchat
Knowing their names by heart as best I can the first day of school and a little about them if possible. It never fails and they realize the classroom is a second home and I care about them already. #5thchat#LoveWorks#DearRoom26
A3: Students' opinions matter too! Give them choices, not just one way to go about a task. They're more willing to participate if they have more of a say in it. #5thchat
A4: @Flipgrid for sure! I’m sure I’m not alone, but I see students and teachers with endless engagement! Also, I’m late! Steven, form Greenville, SC! #5thchat
A4 #5thchat
I mentioned some in A3, but also @PhETsims and I am dying to try @chatterpix this year. It looks so cool for MS kiddos to have fun with. Gotta get it on the ipads first
A1: During my observation a couple weeks ago, the teachers would say the middle schools name and the students would respond the mascot. I also noticed she wouldn’t say it too loud, expecting the students to already be at a low level of noise #5thchat
A4: I 💜@classdojo for communication w/ families/classroom rewards/behavior management, @flipgrid for reading homework shares/learning about ea. other, @ReadWorks for articles based on interest/ability level, @gonoodle for inspiration/quick lessons/motivation & movement #5thchat
A5: I was in a session at a PLC Conference last week and we did a snowball fight movement & engagement activity. IT was a BLAST! Can't wait to do it with my kids! #5thchat
A5: We basically turn everything into a game. Students answer a question right they can shoot a hoop, kick a ball, run around, or do their fav dance. We also take class outside as often as we can! #5thchat
A5: I set up a classroom environment where Ss can sit wherever they want. They have to be at desks for the "lecture" part but when it comes to independent/partner/team work they can sit where ever/however they want #5thchat
My kids call it "falling out" when they get to move from their regular spots. They ask frequently if they can "fall out" It makes such a difference to give them choices! #5thchat
A6: A charter school I observe utilizes an online program that monitors the student’s progress in all subjects. The teacher would talk to each individual student each day to discuss what they needed to do that day #5thchat
A6: new to this...but I started unit plans this year that state knowledge and skill targets. As we learn I give Ss opportunities to set a goal and see what they know with google forms, work graded by me, and quizizz reviews. They record how they are doing, #5thchat
Sure. We were asked to write down descriptions of a subject- then we crumpled up the page and threw them at each other. When the timer went off we uncrumpled the page & identified the subject that was described. Characters in books, land forms, vocabulary etc. #5thchat
A4: @GetKahoot is amazing!! Easy to create and the competition keeps students interested. Answer Garden is a great way to get short answer feedback. #5thchat
A6 - Partner checks - it gives them a chance to learn from each other and fix "fails" before they turn in work for a grade. Less threatening since they are being "corrected" by a peer vs a teacher #5thchat
A7 When my Ss share their learning we do a cheer: (https://t.co/Byz6LXoJ4Q) It motivates them to participate b/c they like getting to pick their favorite cheer to be celebrated with #5thchat
A7: We do large group celebrations if our whole class succeeds at a targeted goal. I need to be better at individualized celebrations for students. #5thchat
A7: We love to celebrate! One way is paw- sitives at class meetings where we note good work, helpful behavior or growth, and anyone can give one out. It helps us learn to be more grateful and look for the good! #5thchat
Thanks to everyone who participated in this evening's #5thchat! Thanks especially to @gruffcorn13 for moderating tonight!
Please join #5thchat NEXT TUESDAY (11/6/18) at 7pm Central as @teachchoice moderates "Driving Intentional Learning through Purposeful Planning!"
A8 - take an honest look at your lesson, classroom, delivery. With humble eyes, ask" does this feel engaging? Do kids have the tools to be successful with this? Would I have wanted to do this as a 5th grader?" If the answer is no, change it! Keep trying new stuff! #5thchat
