Hi #sstlap, this is Bill Chapman, a retired secondary social studies teacher, checking in from Berkeley, CA. I am thankful for all of you wonderful #sstlap participants!
I’m going to lirk in he background for a while. Sam here from MA! World geography teacher of 7th graders. Honestly, I’m grateful for everything this past year #sstlap
Carlene Wolter, WI, 7th Grade Geography, 8th Grade and 11th Grade US History, 12th Grade Government, and APUSH -- Thankful to have the time to chat tonight! #sstlap
A1 I work more with Ts - so hope they see me as positive, caring about them and working to support their efforts.
Know that I have good relations with some, while others I need to cultivate #sstlap
#sstlap A1 I believe students see me as a educator that attempts to create lessons with their interest in mind. Bringing experts to the classroom both live and over the internet makes learning relevant.
A1 I like to show my students that I am a human being with hobbies, interests, and sometimes I make mistakes! They see that I am active at school. I also try hard to show my students know that I care about them, so I hope I could answer yes to that too! #sstlap
A1: In my experiences in the classroom, I have always tried to show the students that I am not just a robot. I care about them and their learning & I always try to have a positive mental attitude, no matter the situations; students can tell #sstlap
A1 I do give an eval at the end of the year that is anonymous with these types of questions and I'm confident that the majority of my students see/remember me as a person and their teacher. #sstlap
A1) Chris from Bloomington, IN checking in late. Teach world history for private online school. I think yes for all though it's challenging teaching online. #sstlap
While I struggle with the idea of the student sleeping in my class - thinking I am not doing something engaging- not providing something meaningful- I appreciate the message of the benefit for the student's health- differ POV - interesting to consider #sstlap
while i was often nervous when doing student surveys- so often overwhelmingly positive - and a couple areas I could improve- if i didn't ask I wouldn't know and wouldn't grow- good luck #sstlap
A1 my ss know that I was not a straight a ss. I struggled in math, had anxiety and terrible stage fright. Didn't enjoy speaking in front of people. Still get nervous in front of groups and staff. #sstlap
Feedback is greatly improving student product in my classes! At the same time, it's a little more work for me at times. Using much more class time to conference with Ss this year. #sstlap
A2) I try to include choice in my lessons which is something I appreciate a great deal in PD. Always trying to figure out more ways to give Ss choice/options. #sstlap

A2: Whenever I attend PD, there's always something to gain & learn; no matter what it is, I always try to implement it or modify it so that it can be effective for my Ss; can be hard sometimes to get perfect implementation, but that's the beauty of ed: trying new things #sstlap

A1 - I hope my students see me as creative, a risk taker, and not afraid to make mistakes. I've been trying many new ideas this year to engage my students with history. #sstlap
A2 I took class in the hallway often- gallery walks, scavenger hunts, movement as often as possible-
collaborative groups, student working in groups, projects- got off the stage #sstlap
A2 I like to get students up and talking to one another. Groups often change, and students have the opportunity to work individually, with partners, groups, whole class... I would like to have my class connect more with other students in the world though. #sstlap
nice- reminds me of my sharing about algebra- helped me understand the struggles of students- let them know how to overcome- what i did might work for them #sstlap
A1 my ss know that I was not a straight a ss. I struggled in math, had anxiety and terrible stage fright. Didn't enjoy speaking in front of people. Still get nervous in front of groups and staff. #sstlap
A3) Start with easy questions (favorite ice cream, for ex) to build comfort & skills before getting into more challenging ?s. Also, have Ss help develop criteria for what effective discussion looks/sounds like. #sstlap
A3 you must teach good listening skills. Good speaking skills. We work on NOT interjecting when others are speaking.
Also choose or phrase topics in a way that all ss can have something to say. #sstlap
A3 Accountability Buddies!
Each S has a buddy that encourages them to put themselves out there. It's the best thing I've done to get all Ss talking to someone, and hopefully, more Ss and the whole class! #sstlap
Sometimes I begin my classes with low pressure warm up questions (pass the ball to boost kinesthetic - corny but effective) such as favorite ice cream, role model/hero, and yesterday - what is one animal (real or mythical) you would ride to school? #sstlap
I didn't do this early in career, but added more and more as I learned subject and how to teach- so important to let them chose medium to show their knowledge #sstlap
A2) I try to include choice in my lessons which is something I appreciate a great deal in PD. Always trying to figure out more ways to give Ss choice/options. #sstlap
A3: One of my favorite discussion strategies/tools are Anchor Charts; these can be really helpful when working with textual evidence to write papers, essays, debates, etc. #sstlap
A3 use simple activities (building legos) to foster chatting, use popsicle sticks to foster participation, use speaking stems to model discussion #sstlap
A3 taking time to jigsaw/gallery walk during projects. Allowing ss time and opportunity to explain and question each other about how they did something or why. Where they found it etc. #sstlap
such a positive attitude- I have tried that approach typically - there are sometimes it is harder when you are mandated to do something to see the value- but always find something #sstlap

A3 I think it's so important to get Ss talking WITHOUT content. Let them get comfortable with each other in a topic that they care about. Then work content into it. #sstlap
If you read the article I fit often into Will discuss meaning I was center of convo- but used agree/disagree often -
I wasn't great at this -so article is something i need to implement to grow
#sstlap
When Ss do projects, gallery walks are a great way to have students look at them -- presentations can make Ss nervous and others can zone out. Once in a while, gallery walks are the way to go. #sstlap
Mystery skype and Mystery Google Hangouts (google+ communities) are great opportunities -
#sstlap
we did a school culture video project and 9/11 blog that connected schools across country
powerful experiences

A4) Sadly, not any as it's hard to implement these in an online asynchronous environment w/ rolling enrollment. Using GDocs commenting now but would love to add Flipgrid, VoiceThread, etc. #sstlap
A4 This year Ss will be debating the Confederate statues in a discussion format... I haven't decided which yet. My APUSH students are extremely curious about the controversy. #sstlap
oh great Q- if we don't use it to move forward don't ask the question- don't waste students time and insult them- as you are basically saying you don't value their ideas if you don't use info #sstlap
A4
I'm doing a Socratic next week where 1 accountability buddy will be in inner circle & partner is in outer circle. The outer partner's job is to encourage & coach their buddy on the inside. #sstlap
A4 #sstlap
If we are reviewing an assignment/making corrections. I always have teams "talk at your table" and then I cold call. The idea is that if ss don't like their answer they can borrow from someone at their table.
like so many things if you establish expectations and build those relationships it works out- we had to deal with students walking through our groups in hallway - had to trust ss to do right thing in scavenger hunts - worked out #sstlap
yes to listening skills especially- and especially for teachers- read article - be the last person in the room to speak (in meeting) but get to hear others ideas - really hear them #sstlap
A3 you must teach good listening skills. Good speaking skills. We work on NOT interjecting when others are speaking.
Also choose or phrase topics in a way that all ss can have something to say. #sstlap
A4: I have used/been apart of fishbowls and Socratic seminar; love them, specifically fish bowl b/c it allows great discussion that is inclusive of Ss (at times); Socratic seminars really allows the Ss to know the content and think deeper (gr8 discussion tool) #sstlap
A5 Google Classroom has made differentiation so much easier. I can assign different things to different students and no one has to know about it. I can also keep tabs on all students as they work digitally, providing feedback as they go. #sstlap
A5
Differentiation in my classroom lets Ss find different ways to share out their knowledge. They also have some choice in what they investigate. #sstlap
NEWSELA is awesome- great way to get resources for ss Lexile levels - https://t.co/X7fMS3dx7r helps as well. Google used to have search feature by Lexile -
Universal Design for Learning helped me better understand differentiation #sstlap

the struggle is real, but if you start with differentiation for groups not individuals you are making progress to better meeting all their needs - #sstlap
A5 allowing ss three opportunity to learn material in a way that suits their style and also to demonstrate what they've learned in a way that suits them. #sstlap
yes differentiation in terms of student choice in product is important- found not all ss good writers - so had them create posters, videos- when i had ss do audio recording of were colonists justified in rebelling and ss did british accent - Boom hooked #sstlap

A5: in my exper. with differentiation, it can take a lot of prep time when implementing to the lesson, but the discussion & learning I have seen w/Ss can be v effective; it allows different Ss to have an opportunity to gain exposure, practice, and repetition w/ material #sstlap
A6 Choices, choices, choices! Student-led inquiry as well - Give students the time (valuable as it is!) to research something they are interested in. A few minutes a day is all it takes. Use the sources they find as teachable moments in credibility. #sstlap
like the idea- might look at option of letting students do audio or video response if looking at ideas. If working on writing then write- ideas could use https://t.co/vRhGEoWLzZ or set up @RecapThat or @Flipgrid to create video reflections and conversations #sstlap
choice boards to start with-but then always put - have to get t approval before doing in that way - wanted to know in order to assist them in being successful- shouldn't be a surprise what they produced or how well they did on the day of submission- should know along way #sstlap
A6: For personalization, I like to allow Ss to select a topic for different projects, papers, etc.; if they find something fascinating, they'll have more intrinsic motivation to accomplish the task. If it appeals to them, they often learn more from it #sstlap
reminder- next week we will be at 7CST with preservice Ts running the show- #sstlap
thanks for all who joined to night- great to see regular crew and awesome to see new faces1
absolutely- when they see you as someone they can trust and share things with. not afraid to be honest in a positive way I can take criticism if I know they care, and they can take it if they know i care- 2 way street #sstlap
