Good morning fellow travelers! I’m back in central Va and it’s wet and cooling down here. Thinking about those impacted by fire in Ca and hoping the winds die down soon. #satchat
Morning, #satchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. Like how it is with many of you, it's chilly here too, so I've intentionally got a blanket on my lap in addition to this laptop.
GM #satchat! I'm an edugeek & Curriculum Maven #ItsAThing.
And I'm *totally jazzed* about all the TSUNAMI of discussion about reading instruction and research! 🌊
I've been writing about it this week, in case it's not on your radar: https://t.co/q9yUbWCsEI#leadupchat#leadlap
Good morning #satchat! Carla, secondary principal and founder of the Community for Learning, In Santo Domingo, Dom Rep. Happy to learn with you all today!
Good morning #satchat folks! Mitch Center here...I work with district and charter leaders across the country as a coach and thought partner - happy to be here this morning, and very, very happy for this strong cup of black coffee.
Good morning, all! This is @DrMBEdmunds, Director of Secondary Education, in Central New Jersey. Looking forward to learning from all of you! Happy #satchat
A1: Teaching & learning that includes student-centered purposeful planning intentionally designed to facilitate an authentic search for information-an environment in which Ts plan every activity as a quest for knowledge 😊 #satchat

Good morning from a science teacher in NJ blessed and burdened with an adult monarch waiting for the breeze to ease so I can release it to its attempted trip to Mexico.
It's running late.
#satchat
A1: Ss that are engaged can access the content through different classroom opportunities, indifferent to where they are at. Ts are intentional because they know exactly why they are doing something and how to best make it accessible. #satchat
A1 - "Engagement is what the brain attends to."
If the Ss aren't thinking about and/or with the material to learned, being physically active or having a 'fun' activity doesn't really matter.
I've written more about this here:
https://t.co/qRipGe0M6D#satchat
A1. A learning environment that shouts out your school goal of "readers are leaders." Shifting environments doesn't have to end in a classroom, it can be in all of the spaces around a school. #satchat
Q1: I think students are active participants in discovering the knowledge. Teacher facilitator. Al students are able to engage in learning the material. #satchat
We must always remember that each student learns differently and we have to find the best way to facilitate their learning. Our Learning Pages https://t.co/wvlnS21TrS#satchat
A1: Engaged students are positively connecting with the teacher. There are smiles and laughter. They are responding to encouragement or redirection. #satchat
A1 - creating a relatable environment for students in regards to curriculum and content, I create my real-world design challenges to be based on current trends and topics that students can relate to #satchat
A1- student centered, student driven that has authentic voice and choice for the students is what I see when I think engagement and intentionality! My favorite days were when my room was like organized chaos and other Ts asked me to close my door. #satchat
A1. Authentic learning experiences that solve real problems in the school or community. This is a Design Challenge for our library. Kids feel like they can make change that impacts them. #satchat
A1. Classroom doors and what is posted on them affect the learning environment of each hallway. Speaks to what the educator and students inside value. #satchat
A1 With the engagement component, the Teacher sets the tone with that with bringing a high level of excitement & enthusiasm from the start; with the intentionality piece, purposeful planning that has those kids "doing" & "creating" that ties in with those standards #satchat
A1) What comes to mind is purposeful & data driven. If our aim engagement & we hope to be intentional, we have to know where our focus is going 🎯 #SatChat
A1: Engaging = emotionally stimulating and relevant.
Relevance comes from within when we believe what we are doing matters. It's not something told to us by others. It definitely doesn't come from arbitrary numbers like grades. #Satchat
A1 I think of an environment that is designed for students, with students, by students and is all about their learning. #satchat@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
The thing about #satchat that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
A1: Intentional learning environments are arranged with student learners at the heart. Flexible seating. Different learning paths. Student choice and voice. #satchat
1) Intentional learning environments are usually characterized by the thing you don’t see right away - the plan. So often, what happens behind the scenes is the thing that makes the difference. #satchat
A1: any environment that is engaging and intentional has been planfully constructed to be flexible in its layout and resources in order to meet the changing needs of its residents and visitors; lots of wheels, bins, moving storage, peripherals at everyone's disposal #satchat
he just needs a friend to talk to right now....he worked so hard on the miderms and he is still working to keep his son out of jail. they are just going to walk and hold hands....so calm TF down Geesh #MAGA 😄#satchat#SaturdayMorning
A1: My first thought when thinking of engaging and intentional learning environment is, “the Ss best interest will be at the focal point of planning.” #satchat
A1 engaging and intentional environments are active collab spaces supportive of learning and learners using a variety of tools alongside teachers #satchat
A1: An engaging and intentional learning environment is designed around what the students need, not what the standards and curricula dictate. Srandards and curricula should guide and support teaching and learning, not the other way around. #satchat
A1. Learning environments could also involve the engagement of educators and other school leaders. I adore the statement, "what did we learn from this that we can use next time?" #satchat
A1: Students being given the opportunity to have/take control AND ownership of THEIR learning. That elevates and fosters an intention to learn which is sustainable and scalable.
#satchat
A1. LOTS of collaboration. Small group activities. Opportunities to learn from one another asynchronously and through multiple modalities. Hands-on, #studentcentered learning where students find joy and take ownership of their own education. #satchat
A1 engaging and intentional environments are active collab spaces supportive of learning and learners using a variety of tools alongside teachers #satchat

A1 Engaged Ss feel in control of their learning. They have voice & choice, self-assess objectively, know where they are and what they need to do to reach their goals. #SatChat
A1 All plans, preparations and implementation of instructional activities support students' progression towards learning goals. Differentiated learning needs are considered and variations of instructional methods are used to address these needs #satchat

I love how you are giving kids an opportunity to redesign you library. At my school our library is an old classroom and we are very short on space. I would be interested to follow the results of this challenge in your school and try something like this with my students. #satchat
A1 Engaging and intentional environments are designed with myriad users in mind; input from all stakeholders has been sought and included; designed with empathy #satchat
A.1 An engaging & intentional learning environment must include Ss voice & choice, differentiation, tasks that are scaffolded for Ss, and include technology when appropriate. #satchat
#satchat read this. https://t.co/hOWzWRZIdT
...and notice how much of it can't be done because standards, structures, notions of power and control especially, will get in the way.
A1 All plans, preparations and implementation of instructional activities support students' progression towards learning goals. Differentiated learning needs are considered and variations of instructional methods are used to address these needs #satchat
A1. Learning environments could also involve the engagement of educators and other school leaders. I adore the statement, "what did we learn from this that we can use next time?" #satchat
Underlining 'autonomy': When all the residents of a learning space -- teachers & students alike -- can exert some measure of their intentions through agency, that motivates engagement. #satchat
A2: Ts must have high expectations for students and be able to provide a learning environment that supports their access to learning. I believe in strong relationships with students and “knowing” their story. And I tell them I love them every day. This is the foundation. #satchat
A2: Careful planning, thoughtful consideration of how kids learn and how to meet those needs through active engagement and explorative learning 😊#satchat
If school is about stuff we tell kids to learn, it will never be truly relevant or meaningful for them.
School must be about children using learning to actually impact and change their world.
Otherwise, it's just a shell game organized by adults.
#Satchat
A1) Engaging and intentional learning must be responsive and relevant @k_shelton Things like STEM, STEAM, inquiry, choice menus and research come to mind. #satchat
A1 - design your classrooms with a collaborative environment environment, flexible seating, resources located throughout in various compartments, student work and success showcased, it will put learning in a different mindset #satchat
Love the piece on planfully constructed, Jacquelyn. Engaging students with purposeful learning requires intention. Without it, learning becomes haphazard and students don't have a clear path towards learning goals @MsJWhiting#satchat
A1 an intentional and active learning environment supports learners to modify and change it to accommodate their needs for privacy, collab work, and learning by design #satchat
A1 I’m loving that so many of us included the importance of student voice as a key piece of an intentional learning environment!! @RickJetter@RebeccaCoda#Satchat

Yes! I was watching spiderweb discussion last week. The T so wanted to guide the discussion, but she bit her tongue & let Ss lead. She was amazed to see her them go even deeper than she imagined. It was magical. #satchat
A2: Relationship, belonging, inclusion and active participation helpnto create engaging learning environments. Do students feel and act connected? #SatChat
A2. Without trust we simply coordinate or cooperate with each other as learners. In order to collaborate the element of trust must be firmly in place. #Satchat
A:1 #satchat Engaging & intentional learning environs are developed w/ students' interests in the learning plan, helping Ss to focus on the objective thru their interests & then arranges the learning process w/ deliberate actions i.e. brain-based & research-based strategies.
A2 Engaging and intentional learning communities are created through relationships, research and reflection. Learn alongside of the students and listen to them. #satchat
A2 - education environments are student-centered and designed for learning by all, get students involved when developing your goals, projects, or missions #satchat
A2: Engaging and intentional learning environments are created when a teacher is pedagogically creative but more importantly, knows her students’ interests and overall needs, well. #satchat
High expectations are critical and so is taking ownership of the responsibility. So often I hear struggling students say “those kids” rather than “my students” #satchat
A2: Ts must have high expectations for students and be able to provide a learning environment that supports their access to learning. I believe in strong relationships with students and “knowing” their story. And I tell them I love them every day. This is the foundation. #satchat
World’s top #teacher shares a lesson in compassion 🌻
“That’s the value of what a teacher brings to the classroom”
Powerful! Let’s scale the lesson! Intentional learning environments start here.
Pls share with your PLN! ❤️
#satchathttps://t.co/NUV8IrjeFZ
A2: Engaging and intentional learning environments are created around the demographics of the Ss within the classrooms. Educators need to know their Ss and their Ss needs. #satchat
A2) Created first by establishing safe, positive, and nurturing environments for learning. Teachers have build this first before the other things can occur. #satchat
A2: It starts by flattening the hierarchy. Ss, Ts, Admin, Parents all need to be partners in learning rather than coercive. There needs to be shared autonomy. Learners need to drive the learning. It needs to be relevant. It needs to matter for more than passing a test. #satchat
So true Kelley but it’s amazing to walk thru the exhibit hall at #edspaces and see the shift in furniture from rigid desks and chairs as the mainstay to flexible, multilevel, comfortable choices for kids - good for physical and emotional health #satchat
This photo exemplifies what the intentional environment 'looks likes.' We can only imagine what it 'sounds like' and 'feels like' for young children. Thanks for sharing. #satchat A:1
A1 an intentional and active learning environment supports learners to modify and change it to accommodate their needs for privacy, collab work, and learning by design #satchat
A2: Engaging and intentional learning environments are created with a risk-taking mindset. Students take risks when teachers take risks. Teachers take risks when school leaders take risks. School leaders take risks when district leaders take risks. It’s contagious! #satchat
A2 Engaging learning environments are created by paying attention to what the Ss need to learn. Through observing Ss and adjusting things when needed. Constantly ask yourself, “is this working for the Ss?” #satchat
A2. Student Centered instruction will remain our focus so teachers develop skills to be the “guide on the side” and incorporate PBL and Design Thinking into our schools. Admin must model it with PD- give teachers resources and time to implement and provide feedback. #satchat
I am old school and maybe it is a product of my upbringing. I just don't know any "other" way to think. I love them all and I will meet them where they are at. That is our gift as Ts. IMO. #satchat
A2- engaging and intentional environments begin and end with the belief that all students are capable of great things everyday, no matter what! . #Satchat
A2. At the @SeriousPlayConf this summer, @elonuniversity’s @acrider said that today’s teachers must evolve...
BEYOND “sage on the stage”
BEYOND “guide on the side”
to become the
“Impresario with the scenario.”
We set the scene & we watch what our learners can do!
#SatChat
A2: To build off the "students can" belief, T's develop opportunity for autonomy, support risk taking, give chances to rework mistakes, and make connections w/ each student. #satchat
A2 It starts on Day 1 with an INTENTIONAL PLAN to learn everything you can about each individual learner. Then you must revamp those lesson plans you used last year on last year's kids! The current year's kids need fresh ideas integrated into those plans! #satchat
A2 That's the restraint of the classroom--having to create the environment. While on a photo shoot with my daughter last week, we came across a snake. How much learning took place with a camera, cell phone and the internet!#Satchat
A2 Student engagement is created by developing authentic relationships and caring about the wellbeing of students. This creates the foundation for learning #Satchat
A1 - design your classrooms with a collaborative environment environment, flexible seating, resources located throughout in various compartments, student work and success showcased, it will put learning in a different mindset #satchat
A2: Created by those using the space. Which means...it’s ok if the room isn’t perfect at the beginning of the year. When students have a role in what the space looks like and how they interact with that space they will use more effectively #satchat
A2: It starts by flattening the hierarchy. Ss, Ts, Admin, Parents all need to be partners in learning rather than coercive. There needs to be shared autonomy. Learners need to drive the learning. It needs to be relevant. It needs to matter for more than passing a test. #satchat
No, but the high-quality, standards-aligned program can be a powerful tool to help the intentional educator to organise instruction as long as there is no requirement or expectation to simply cover the materials. #satchat
A2 Engaging & intentional learning environments start to be created when teachers speak up strategically to help create conducive conditions, yet depend on us biting our tongues to make room for students' voices. #satchat See Exhibit A below...
Yes! I was watching spiderweb discussion last week. The T so wanted to guide the discussion, but she bit her tongue & let Ss lead. She was amazed to see her them go even deeper than she imagined. It was magical. #satchat
Right?! I remember sitting in desks that were attached to each other...in one long row! Our job at the end of the day was to push the broom under and all the way up the aisle! Almost "Little House on the Prairie" but NOT! Ha! #satchat
Are engaging and intentional learning environments created by having a forward thinking, innovative mindset or a go-with-the-flow archaic mindset? 🧐 #satchat
A2 Our district has a new HS that involves on the job training, shadowing and projects in the community 2 days a week. It has dual learning and many students will graduate with an associates. It’s opening in 2019. #satchat
By giving students a chance to help create the expectations do environment students will be more engaged. Displaying student work and making sure student’s voices are heard in the school. #satchat
I have done a prescribed program before, and there is always a way to make adjustments for the students to they are engaged and actively learning. #satchat
A2 begins w why change curriculum, assessment, pedagogy, tools, space design? What’s the end in mind? Getting kids to pass state tests or to create learning experiences so that it sticks and makes sense? #satchat
A2: Firstly and more importantly, you must have a vision of what an engaging environment looks like. Then, it requires a willingness to abandon the old ways of doing things and spend the time and effort to make it happen.
#satchat
A1: Engaging and intentional learning environments welcome student voice and student choice, not ‘cluttered‘ with ‘decor’ that is teacher purchased, provide provocations that evoke and inspire student thinking, inquiry and collaboration, with respect as the foundation. #satchat
A2: Engaging and intentional learning environments are created with a risk-taking mindset. Students take risks when teachers take risks. Teachers take risks when school leaders take risks. School leaders take risks when district leaders take risks. It’s contagious! #satchat
A2 I'm finding that change in language truly helps create an intentional learning environment. Language that is learning focused instead of grade focused helps Ss change their mindset & care about learning rather than jumping through hoops to get a grade. #SatChat
Me too. A few years back as a teacher I tried to go completely online with everything I did. It was a little too much, too fast and I learned I needed a better balance. #satchat
A2: By being unintentional! Start by getting to know your Ss--how do they work together, what engages them? Keep top of mind though what works for you--Ss will feel your energy--if you aren't into it, either will they! #satchat
We gave a focus group of students a blank map of our library and a list of all the furniture & resources, and no budget. They re-planned the layout of the space to meet their needs and we implemented their plan. #satchat
A2 A key component of constructing and fostering engaging learning environments is students' opportunities to dialogue, question, debate, and reflect on learning topics. This allows our Ss to increase their academic and social learning capacity. #satchat
This is based from @MathDenisNJ book Instant Relevance. Anything you see in real life that you can build a problem off of. Recently we compared Coca-Cola costs using unit rate to find the best deal. #satchat
A2: It starts by flattening the hierarchy. Ss, Ts, Admin, Parents all need to be partners in learning rather than coercive. There needs to be shared autonomy. Learners need to drive the learning. It needs to be relevant. It needs to matter for more than passing a test. #satchat
To create a culture of Innovation, leaders must first MODEL IT. As the leader, you must demonstrate a forward-thinking mindset and model what you are expecting from your staff. #SatChat
A2: Organically through plenty of conversation, thought, and focus on student needs/opportunities/interests! And the environment created is flexible and easily adjusted to respond to current student needs. #satchat
If your words, decisions, and actions reflect where you want the school to go, not where it is today, you can create a mindset that expands through the entire school community. #satchat
A3. I turned my entire syllabus into a welcome back game. Now it’s a team challenge through 10 stations with action-oriented work products at each so we never have to read the class rules again. @alicekeeler liked it! Please steal it 😎 https://t.co/o5tM6t5IXF#SatChat
A2: Engaging and intentional learning environments are created with a risk-taking mindset. Students take risks when teachers take risks. Teachers take risks when school leaders take risks. School leaders take risks when district leaders take risks. It’s contagious! #satchat
A1: students are talking, furniture is arranged so kids can be in different configurations, teacher is focused on the learning objectives while facilitating #satchat
A2:Starts early, a culture is established day one, then modeled, and nurtured throughout the year. Ss get used to particular styles and take the lead (when we step aside). They LOVE learning from each other. #satchat
A2) Technically speaking, intentional learning environments are best created when adults pick their heads up, look around, borrow ideas, share, identify places and people that are doing what they want to do, and then design/plan accordingly. #satchat
If admin truly understand the nature of learning through effective relationships, strong instructional planning, and ongoing assessment to show mastery, they wouldn’t have to worry about test scores #satchat
A3: Choice is super important when achieving engaging lessons. Clear objectives must be communicated and Ss should know the “why” of what they are doing. But offering them “choice” that will still develop higher order thinking is key. #satchat
A2. Every year, my kids are a new group...Day 1 Creating Relationships with them is key. I need to keep looking for ways to reach each student...What's important to them? #satchat
Sure. Not all Ts feel this way either. But, too many do. We haven't hit a tipping point yet. I'm a believer in experiential learning. It's why I help admins & Ts experience what real, relevant learning looks & feels like in workshops. You can't do it if you don't know it #satchat
I think it's all about the program. There has been a sea change in the curriculum space, and today's programs are NOTHING like the basals and textbooks of yore.
I just wrote about this for @openupresources. The proof is in the teacher tweets!

A3: Engaging learning environments put kids in the center of everything, planning, activities, group collaboration & play, everything is done with the purpose of stimulating learning 😊 #satchat
1) Intentional learning environments are usually characterized by the thing you don’t see right away - the plan. So often, what happens behind the scenes is the thing that makes the difference. #satchat
A2: When a school/district fosters a “culture” of inclusion among all stakeholders. That takes/requires “intentional” leadership, commitment and role modeling of all staff, admins, T’s, and support.
#satchat
A3: I am a firm believer in the #tcrwp workshop model. I believe it builds a culture or reading and writing (in #sschat as well). It honors voice and encourages choice. #satchat
Engagement can occur in both. It's all about the Ss cognition.
Now, can one environment potentially be better or worse at promoting engagement? I think so. Environments can be too 'busy' & split Ss attention, which can lead to engagement in the wrong material.
#satchat
A2: Careful planning and strategy. There needs to be a clear goal that students are trying to accomplish or a question they are trying to answer. It may look like chaos but the level of work and planning that goes into it is often much greater then traditional lecture. #satchat
Rich, again to Blake Boles. He called it consensual learning. Great concept. @blakeboles And you can read this morning how much I took away from his talk! #satchat
A:2 #satchat Engaging environments take time to create. There is a #relationshipbuilding component between students and teachers. Ss need to know their Ts care & want to get to know their interests. Ss should want to be in your classroom. Set the stage for learning.
Absolutely, Carla. Learning-focused language is evident when our students are engaged in questioning each other and using what they learn from their peers to foster richer dialogue with other learners @carlameyrink#satchat
A2: Engaging & intentional environments MUST begin with authentic convos. Yes, obviously $ comes into effect. But if thoughtful convos w/ students, parents, teachers, & community members discuss the goals and outcomes of the space, that $ can be used more effectively. #satchat
I agree that we can get some great ideas from looking at other environments that are working. I think another Important step is involving our students to see what they need and expect from our learning environment.#satchat
Yes! It’s not about a test - that is a measure - it’s about growing students develop the skills, dispositions and competencies to grab life and be successful! #satchat
A2 begins w why change curriculum, assessment, pedagogy, tools, space design? What’s the end in mind? Getting kids to pass state tests or to create learning experiences so that it sticks and makes sense? #satchat
A3. Decades ago switched out computer labs with Apple iie's for carts of laptops and six computers in each room. Also switched out desks for tables in two schools. #SatChat
A3 - As k-12 technology, engineering, and design educator and k-12 STEAM coordinator, all of my learning environment projects revolve around real-world problem solving through hands on learning in specialized makerspaces or through cross-collaborative integration #satchat
Agreed! Ss also need to see themselves reflected in the plans and instruction. Even if something worked well with other Ss, it can be simple tweaks using the knowledge about individual kids to work with their interests and passions. #satchat#voice#agency#allin4NB
A2 It starts on Day 1 with an INTENTIONAL PLAN to learn everything you can about each individual learner. Then you must revamp those lesson plans you used last year on last year's kids! The current year's kids need fresh ideas integrated into those plans! #satchat
@MsJWhiting , I love this idea because students are empowered to be decision makers and experts in what they need and how they learn best! #studentvoice#satchat
A:2 #satchat Engaging environments take time to create. There is a #relationshipbuilding component between students and teachers. Ss need to know their Ts care & want to get to know their interests. Ss should want to be in your classroom. Set the stage for learning.
A2: Creating engaging intentional learning environments needs to start with our students...their needs, interests and passions should help to shape these environments. I’ve ‘let go of the reigns’ more over the years to better honour student voice! #satchat
A.3 From my experience Maker Spaces and Genius Hours are two excellent examples of ways to provide engaging learning environments for students. #satchat
A3: Our Professional Growth Model (Passion Projects for Adults) has allowed our staff to own learning which has lead to students owning theirs. It’s been amazing...our people are crushing it. #satchat
A2 It starts on Day 1 with an INTENTIONAL PLAN to learn everything you can about each individual learner. Then you must revamp those lesson plans you used last year on last year's kids! The current year's kids need fresh ideas integrated into those plans! #satchat
A3: As a math teacher, lessons that move away from asking students to regurgitate procedures and steps, but instead requires them to discuss and demonstrate a deep conceptual understanding of math concepts and how they apply to the real world.
#satchat
I like to chat with the kids who are normally left out of the “focus group” because they are the behavior/academic issues ... in theory they are they individuals that need to be included #satchat
Never tell people HOW to do things. Tell them WHAT to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity. Give your staff the freedom to create, design, and ideate and they will in turn provide the same space to all of your students. The classroom is where magic happens. #satchat
No. Canned programs can't be engaging. Teachers can be engaging, and good teachers can make amazing experiences for kids out of lousy materials like canned programs. But the programs aren't engaging. The environment is b/c of the teacher. #satchat
A3) The High Tech High network of schools talks about developing learning experiences that have an “authentic audience.” Writing poetry? Find a cafe for a reading. Building boats? Take them to the bay for testing. Students are engaged when purpose is clear and real. #satchat
A3 Genius Hr, 20% Time, Restorative and Classroom Circles, Student Lead Conferencing, Student Unions, Pineapple Charts for staff, Edcamp style PD.... shall I continue? #satchat
A3: Teachers who created meaningful learning experiences, utilizing their physical set-up, hands-on activities, small group instruction, and technology (i.e. Chromebooks) all while ensuring ALL students are actively participating in the lesson. #satchat
We gave a focus group of students a blank map of our library and a list of all the furniture & resources, and no budget. They re-planned the layout of the space to meet their needs and we implemented their plan. #satchat
A3. We have gone from traditional to a much more student centered classroom. Proud of our staff for bringing in speakers (Professionals) and using authentic audiences. #satchat
The older I get, the more detailed and intentional I am in my lesson plans. Many would think the opposite. "You know what you're doing so you don't have to write it down." Could not be further from the truth! #satchat
A3 I was the king of "borrowing" from other educators. When became connected, I gained new ideas weekly from Twitter. Anything dealing with tech & being student centered, I found a way to integrate at least 1 of those new ideas into next weeks. Then my teaching took off! #satchat
I know that prescribed programs are not always the best, but being negative about it doesn't help. Find a positive and go with it. Ss see when you don't think something works and will follow your lead. Keep a positive attitude and build that learning environment. #satchat
In reply to
@NA_Dellsey, @sstorm01, @effortfuleduktr
Relationship building should take place during the first few weeks of school. It should be created in the LESSON PLAN. If you plan it, it will happen! #OneWordReview PLAN #satchat

A3: As a math teacher, lessons that move away from asking students to regurgitate procedures and steps, but instead requires them to discuss and demonstrate a deep conceptual understanding of math concepts and how they apply to the real world.

A3 Students like relevant learning. While teaching a journalism class, I created a breaking news story. I had myself kidnapped by a grad student. Then he came back as a police officer to run a news conference. We had both worked for ABC News. It was as real as possible. #Satchat
A3. Whether this AMAZING bulletin board is within the classroom or out in the hallways where many can learn from it #ClassroomBookADay is a magnificent idea that extends learning. #satchat
You can be compassionate, empathetic, etc. within a canned program.
Again, I'm not saying canned programs are the answer, but saying there's nothing good about them is incorrect.
#satchat
Also, it'd be good if we accepted all learning is consensual learning. All learning is self-directed. That kid who's memorized all of Leo Messi's goals, but can't pass your test, directed their own learning. #satchat
We did our @openupresources math drink recipe lesson today. My favorite part was when one of the taste testers put her mix A and B together and someone asked if it was stronger or weaker than C?!?! #MTBoS#iteachmath

Agreed. But this is a novel idea that has to be sustained! At first a good story is a unique way to get their interest. Can Ts sustain that. Some can. But it is a gift...harder to develop. It really is like "acting" or "performing" in a way. But can be developed too! #satchat
A3 Student centered learning activities, technology incorporated into the lessons, students as the lead learners in the lesson, Genius Hour and passion projects, student choice for projects, coding! #satchat
A3) Wow, from lecture to dissections - I have been fortunate to observe some of the best. The one key factor linking them all - always student centered/student focused. Allowing students to take ownership in their learning. #satchat
A3: I intentionally used circles to start class (7th grade) every day during my last year in the classroom before becoming a coach. It created a connected group of S's who out-performed their peers. #satchat
We have to get better at naming the things that matter in schools. Everything can’t be the highest priority. The load on the classroom is too great. #satchat
A3: My classroom consists of a carpet, high/low/medium tables, pillows, ottomans and stools. I don't have a desk, nor do my students. We shift the classroom based on need and tidy at the end of the day. #satchat
A3: The most engaging and intentional classrooms I have seen, regardless of age, content, or location, have always incorporated a mixture of creative performance, critical inquiry, productive collaboration, and effective communication among teachers and students. #satchat
A1: Students having productive conversations, collaboration, maybe moving around the room, meeting students where they are at & helping them achieve the learning outcomes! #satchat
A3 I’ve seen engaging and intentional learning environments in schools w great resources, limited resources, urban, suburban, rural, w varying demographics. In common? Ts who observe needs of kids, take risks to change practice, value lifelong learning #satchat
A4: Using Google Classroom, to effectively put the Ss in charge of their own access to information is AMAZING! Understood that they have been taught digital citizenship and “norms” of working with technology, technology takes them where other tools simply cannot. #satchat
A3: When you observe “and feel or sense” student movement of mind, body, and spirit. It can take many forms, however, it’s unmistakable when it’s present. And it’s HIGHLY contagious! 💡
#satchat
A3. Focus on the skills, dispositions and competencies you want students to develop. Be deliberate and intentional about infusing appropriate techniques to help students develop understanding and innovation. #STEAM#Coding can belong in any classroom. #satchat
Not necessarily, but a teacher that puts student needs at the center of her plan can make a lesson engaging, differentiated, fun, interesting, etc. Harder to do with *bad* canned programs, for sure. #satchat
Democrats who choose not to understand basic issues because of their agendas is one of our biggest threats. Trump tweeted there is gross mismangement in California forest, causing #CaliforniaFires. What part of this do liberals not understand? #satchat#SemperFi#Woolseyfires

A3. When teachers provide choices to students, I’ve observed an increase in Ss intrinsic motivation. Ss choice in @GandTTeam has led 2 increase in student effort, task performance, and subsequent learning. #SatChat
A4. One of the most engaging and intentional learning environment I observed was one aided by program @classcraftgame in a 4th grade classroom. LOVED how families could log in at home & also participate easily. Students were self motivated to reach goals they developed #satchat
A4: Technology can't support anything. Teachers can use technology to support whatever they want, but it comes down to the skill of the T at creating learning environments and experiences for students. Tech is a catalyst. Used well, it helps. Used poorly, it's a disaster #satchat
As a former news researcher, I LOVE finding answers to questions with technology. Hand research in a library is valuable; but having a phone, or a computer is awesome! #Satchat
And I never stop. I think about it all the time. Mostly in the early hours of the day, while still drinking coffee. It's a creative process supported by researched, best practices. #satchat
A3 I have created an environment where the students know that their feedback is sought after, valued and implemented. They are the center of the classroom, and they look at it as a responsibility. They are a part of the creation process---their learning's a team process. #satchat
A4 Love the use of Google Classroom, one stop shop- lessons, review materials, students scan take the lead/ownership of their learning. Of course digital citizenship lessons are shared at the start of the year!! #satchat
A4: Tech needs to be used intentionally and in actual connection to the content, not just tech for tech sake. Have Ss do reflection on a video site like @Flipgrid on various steps in a project. #satchat
A4: Technoloy is anything that makes a task more efficient by easing the process of accomplishing that task. So any tools in the classroom become effective technology when used to improve student learning and not just to be another shiny objects to distract young minds. #satchat
Never tell people HOW to do things. Tell them WHAT to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity. Give your staff the freedom to create, design, and ideate and they will in turn provide the same space to all of your students. The classroom is where magic happens. #satchat
A4: How can #Edtech support engaging and intentional learning environments? Check out the Visible Learning in the Digital World matrix I created recently https://t.co/PDMsmO1f6W#satchat
A4 Tech means the learning environment is not confined within the actual space and the learners and teachers include people beyond the confines of the space. Ultimate flexibility! It is a means of planning, inquiry, communication, prototyping, creation, sharing, etc. #satchat
A3: As a math teacher, lessons that move away from asking students to regurgitate procedures and steps, but instead requires them to discuss and demonstrate a deep conceptual understanding of math concepts and how they apply to the real world.

Our school district is a Responsive Classroom district. All elementary classrooms begin their day with a morning meeting. It helps us become empathetic to one another and prepares everyone for the day's learning. #satchat
A3: I intentionally used circles to start class (7th grade) every day during my last year in the classroom before becoming a coach. It created a connected group of S's who out-performed their peers. #satchat
A4- technology, a tool or resource that makes completing a task easier, comes in many forms. Do not invest lots of money in the new thing for your school or classroom, instead keep your projects up to date with the current and keep it flexible = engaging #satchat
A4: Technology must also be flexible and mobile. It is another tool for learning. For some students it is necessary, for all it is an option. It can provide a variety of choices to demonstrate understanding. Not just one size fits all. #satchat
A3: I did a room transformation, love doing readers theater, implementing blended learning experiences, having students create & do STEM activities. #satchat
A3: When Ts take something that Is used in the traditional sense then add to it. For ex: @EVERFIK12 Venture- Entrepreneurship program- Ss creates an online food truck then made it come to life w/ FCS & #Stem classes #satchat
Yes. Give a great teacher a box of sticks in a forest and they will create experiences and learning opportunities for kids. Put a lousy teacher in the most resourced classroom and kids will struggle. That being said, we want great teachers with great resources. #satchat
A4 Technology can help enhance an engaging and intentional learning environment, by allowing students to take charge of their own learning and have easier access. #Satchat
This statement right here deserves to be retweeted. There are teachers our here that feel handcuffed by these curriculums, but I'm a firm believer that fidelity will still exist in addition to a "teacher's fire and passion for kids" spin on it! #satchat
No. Canned programs can't be engaging. Teachers can be engaging, and good teachers can make amazing experiences for kids out of lousy materials like canned programs. But the programs aren't engaging. The environment is b/c of the teacher. #satchat
A4 Using tech is the world our Ss live in. Using it to engage them in the classroom should be the norm. Find out what tech they’re into and capitalize on it! Right now they’re loving @Flipgrid so much! #satchat
A4. I think many apps are now differentiated, so all are able to join in at their comfort level.
Also, the kids can teach me...I like that and they like leading #satchat
A4. I LOVE blending tech w/ non-tech stations using QR codes! Some stations like @YouTube or @edpuzzle ask students to watch video, while @Flipgrid has them create one of their own. @quizizz, @sporcle & @gimkit turn Q&A into a game & @hpreveal injects augmented reality! #SatChat
I totally agree with you that a lot of programs are all about the $$$, with little effectiveness.
I guess it comes down to my definition of engagement...for me, it's only about cognition. If the students are thinking about the material, it's engagement.

A4) Technology is always the support & never replaces best practices & teacher input. The technology has to enhance the lesson & allow students to expand on their learning. #satchat
Technology is a tool. It should support engagement and relationships. But it will never be able to replace teachers. The best use of technology I’ve seen is using it as a way to further engage students by exposing them to more content & developing future-ready skills. #satchat
Fair enough.
Are books engaging?
The reason I ask is that a student silently reading can be super engaging, and no teacher has created anything to make it engaging.

A5: Create a culture of safety in which Ts can take risks to create intentional learning environments-support them, encourage, make it happen, facilitate the change! Kids win! #satchat
Questioning comes to mind for me when I think of intentionality. If a student can google an answer to a question, it’s not a good question.
Being more intentional with our questioning can drive better engagement. #SatChat
Sure. The student engaged in reading finds it relevant. Good teachers give kids autonomy to choose the books they want to read, etc. The disengaging teachers demands kids read exactly what they tell them to, etc. #satchat
A4: technology is just the tool. Tech should not be the main event in the lesson. Your tech should be a way to help Ss achieve the learning outcomes. I do love using tools like @nearpod & @Flipgrid to allow students to create & engage with the material in a new way! #satchat

A6: #BOLDSchool has many great ways to blend technology with old-school strategies to raise student engagement level! Check out this Thinglink! #satchat Rigor Relevance Framework - BOLD School Style https://t.co/Uk8fZryzF4
A6) I recommend @hightechhigh for their resources on project-based learning, @RelayGSE for their approach to adult learning through practice, and I suggest asking every kid we know, “what is the best learning experience you’ve had in school?” #satchat
Instructional coaches are certainly beneficial, but the vision for their role must be clear to all stakeholders to make their work systemic and purposeful. #satchat
A5: Every school and district must have instructional coaches to support educators as they look to create and maintain engaging and intentional learning environments #satchat
A6 As a parent in Ky, the study The Missing Link gave the stats and showed the value and impact of involvement from home on students. We can’t give up on that part of the equation. #satchat
Oh my goodness. If a teacher is using a book that marginalizes anyone, then that is the central issue. Are you thinking of a book in particular? As an ELA teacher, this is upsetting to think about. #satchat
A5: #Teachers who create engaging, challenging, motivational learning environments for #students need #Administrators who create engaging, challenging, motivational learning environments. The rest is just logistics and 💵. 😎 #satchat
A5. To support educators as they try to create engaging and intentional learning environments, we must do the same. Our PDs is a good place to start #SatChat
A6 - for those in NJ - the New Jersey technology and engineering educators association @NJTEEA holds training conferences 3 times a year and site visits in well developed programs hosted by the teachers from each program monthly, amazing for all STEM educators #satchat
Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of SMC, #TBHF Humanitarian Envoy, inaugurates a 100-bed facility in Bangladesh to boost medical aid for 140,000 Rohingya Refugees. The generous AED 3 million contribution by SMC helped MSF build the hospital in collaboration with TBHF
A6: resources include connecting/learning from @dailystem and making learning REAL for students - @Sports2STEM has done remarkable work to make #stem accessible for all learners! #satchat
We need to be paying teachers a comfortable, living wage. No teacher should ever have to work two jobs to survive or worry about their students having the supplies they need to succeed. Teachers shape the character, caliber, and future of our children #SatChat
A6: #EduProtocols are highly engaging. Basically, create class time that has flow, more than one activity, and add variety somewhere daily, so that your learning environment doesn’t become stagnant. #satchat
Problem with education system is unequal funding of public schools based off property tax zip codes, promoting inequality. Republican philosophy punishing poor performing schools funding rather than reorganizing and investing in technology & teachers dooms our system #satchat

A6. Do you have this ASCD book "Bold Moves" on your shelf? How can educators transform old schools into remarkable learning environments? https://t.co/6NyYIoxs9N…

A6 I would say that any book published by Dave Burgess has resources for intentionally engaging students. Teach Like a Pirate is a wonderful example. #satchat
When you're a minority student in a class reading about slavery, for example, it can be uncomfortable. Reading books where the "n" word is used freely is uncomfortable. Teachers can love a book to the point of not understanding its potential negative impact on students. #satchat
A6: I think a center-based lesson, like a Daily Five, utilizing iPads/Chromebooks, with an interactive type of exit ticket, like @plickers, hits the mark on many areas. #satchat
Q6: What are some frameworks, models, research, or resources related to engaging and intentional learning environments that you can recommend? #Satchat
Our Ss seem to enjoy discussions around shared reading books. After reading independently for several weeks, they'll ask "so what's our next shared reading book? When do we start?'" They seem to enjoy both ind reading & shared reading.
#satchat
Sometimes it isn't 1 book, it is the accumulation of books. Sometimes marginalization happens through exclusion not through targeting. Sometimes through the discomfort of the teacher to address certain issues. Sometimes from the devaluing of a genre or insistence on one #satchat

Absolutely! Please check out that blog.
One of the pieces noted is Sue Pimentel’s phenomenal article making just this point on the importance of content knowledge to reading comprehension.
Read it, share it, share it again!

A6. TY, we have more opportunities to learn together in teams + then turn-key that learning within the building. I really like seeing my colleagues from other buildings, sharing ideas...what's working in your room? I also value what I learn from colleagues in my school #satchat
A6: Twitter--a global #PLN, @EVERFIK12 no-cost blended learning resources that are linked to incredibly like-minded partners, community members like local business owners, @caselorg#SEL is at the root of growth. #satchat

A6. Global connections are great for any classroom environment. Sends quite the powerful message to students. Graphic shares chat times so you can connect easily! #satchat
“It was a remarkable assault on the nation’s institutions, even by a president who has gleefully taken a hammer to the press, to judges and prosecutors he does not like, and to an electoral process he’s denounced as fraudulent since the day he took office” https://t.co/av7lKo5rEN

I love connecting with all of you! If I don't chat during the week, it is because I am busy "thinking" and "planning" for intentional and engaging lessons. I am also sleeping. My favorite! Love and peace to all. Have a great week! #satchat
I am in Paris getting ready to celebrate the end of World War One. Is there anything better to celebrate than the end of a war, in particular that one, which was one of the bloodiest and worst of all time?
For frameworks, I like #TPACK b/c it helps teachers to be intentional abt their integration of tech. It is similar to Ts defining S's learning goals & working backwards to find ways to create those learning outcomes. #intentional#thoughtful#meaningful#satchat
A6) Also....go to an #edcamp. The methods, processes, styles, frameworks that engage us as adults are frequently the same ones that engage kids. We are all humans that crave authentic interactions that meet our specific needs. #satchat

There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!
Intriguing comment in context of this morning's #satchat & social-media exchanges, in general: Whose voices are represented? Whose voices aren't? How might we contribute to & construct environments that invite diverse voices in service of wider learning lenses?

A6: 💡Collaboration, both formal and informal among teaching peers/colleagues is a powerful and underutilized and under appreciated professional development resource. Low cost/high value. Visiting classrooms of other T’s can be extremely enlightening!

All schools have goals. Don’t forget to have meaningful and authentic conversations with students, staff and parents. The face to face conversations build greatest connections and is foundation for all work.

I'd love to see how you organize groupings. We organize at the beginning of the year with students. The groups of two/three are posted on the wall. Then we say "right now you are working with partner #2", etc... #satchat We see better collaboration and less stress.

A6 of course I think @TimelessLrng coauthored narrative of contemporary progressive educators and learners (by @irasocol@csratliff and me)- documents work and boots on the ground stories that offer insight into purposely inventive learning by design #satchat
A5: Catch them when they fall and then help them up, Pat them on the back and use a coaching model to help them discover their own better way. #satchat
Thank you @marcorubio for helping to expose the potential corruption going on with respect to Election Theft in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The WORLD is now watching closely!
This is shockingly callous given the loss of life & homes, the people living with fear & uncertainty right now. We no longer have a President who cares for all of us. Trump is only for his base & it’s unlikely anyone in the GOP has the courage to do anything real about it.
