Often, our toughest students tend to act out, frustrate, and hurt us the most. Yet, they needs need us the most and the power and influence we have as teachers is significant. Never give up on a student. Ever. They need us more than we know. https://t.co/4EOrZbyyrg#leadupchat
Hey y’all! Latoya, ed leader in chilly SC checking in this morning. Finalized the cover for my new book which will be out soon. I’m so excited! ☕️☕️☕️ #leadupchat

Good morning, #leadupchat! Long time no see!
I’m Aaron Hogan, author of Shattering the Perfect #TeacherMyth, and I’m happy to jump into the conversation while I can this morning. I hope you are al doing well!
A1: Three currents: 1. Trying to redefine my role in this position (essentially creating from scratch), 2. team trust and balance, 3. time to do the important work #LeadUpChat
A1: The human tendency for stagnation, the cultural emphasis on achievement over learning, my own human physical limits (sleep, rest, etc.) #Leadupchat
A1 1. Trying to change ways of thinking about traditional school.
2. Developing a clear vision of where I want to go i my classroom
3. Getting my team onboard to make some significant changes next year
#leadupchat
A1 My main “upstream current” right now is supporting a change in practice in sped, when Ts struggle to have time. Many are treading water and focusing on compliance instead of being able to focus on excellence. #leadupchat
A1 ~ Working with teachers to improve core instruction, building next year’s master schedule, & determine ways to support our ELLs and Special Ed students as they prepare for Regents exams in June! #leadupchat
The pressure of turning around our school in one year, maintaining our staff focused and doing our best so our community can keep our school open! #leadupchat
A1 1.testing season has started-2.evaluations & 3.monitoring Student Learning Objectives that teachers are working on-ALL stuff that has value but it is a perfect storm right now #leadupchat
A1: Adults being adults, 24 hours in a day, & an overrun calendar of tasks! These currents are overwhelming as the dual role of HS Principal/ Super #leadupchat
Today's chat is sequential, so please use this as a reference! Please RT for those who might jump in late! There are 6 questions, but the first 5 are the most connected. #leadupchat
Today's chat is sequential, so please use this as a reference! Please RT for those who might jump in late! There are 6 questions, but the first 5 are the most connected. #leadupchat
A1: building atmosphere, how best to deal with kiddos that face many challenges, trying to step outside of the box and get back to creating excitement with kids #leadupchat
A1: (1) How to get into Clsrms more - my heart’s song (2) Balance in my day - less time behind my desk mire time with Ss (3) Giving Ss more voice #leadupchat
Wowie wow! These are BIG - and so exciting! These feel similar to my upstream challenges at the moment. That vision of school is a tough one to change! #LeadUpChat
A1: 1)the debate between old school grading and standards-based grading 2)how to free up more time in the schedule for teacher collaboration #leadupchat
A1. Here are three things I’m in constant thought about: 1. How do we restore the profession? 2. How do we elevate the profession? 3. How do we lead the narrative surrounding public education? Time for educators to use courage! #leadupchat
A1 1.testing season has started-2.evaluations & 3.monitoring Student Learning Objectives that teachers are working on-ALL stuff that has value but it is a perfect storm right now #leadupchat
Deadlines for substantial change...that's UPSTREAM! To me, it's a voyage and year one is just getting enough wind behind the sail to MOVE! Good luck! #leadupchat
The pressure of turning around our school in one year, maintaining our staff focused and doing our best so our community can keep our school open! #leadupchat
Love this - creating with tech instead of simply consuming. That is such an important one - and the essential shift for teacher is to stop using tech as a replacement tool. #LeadUpChat
A1 I feel cross currents from winds of innovative change and tides of stricter accountability. Confused seas -- which led me to this analogy-packed thread: https://t.co/YmQYQtMOwc#leadupchat
A1: not sure if it’s an upstream current, but it’s a current focus...1) Growing ALL Ss (2)meeting individual needs & (3) supporting ALL staff (including me) in becoming better tomorrow than we were today. #leadupchat
A1: The human tendency for stagnation, the cultural emphasis on achievement over learning, my own human physical limits (sleep, rest, etc.) #Leadupchat
Same here, Jonathan. Have been reflecting on next steps to increase capacity in our team members through delegation to build their leadership toolkit #leadupchat
Latoya---thank you for writing this book that needs to be written. I look forward to news about the release date. I will get it day one. Congratulations! #leadupchat
Love this! These are such great thoughts - I'd love to be a think partner on these ideas! That would stretch me and help me grow, I know it! #LeadUpChat
A1 For those saying assessment and grading, we have assembled an outstanding team to lead PL courses on healthy assessment/grading. Stay up to date here: https://t.co/cZgKj0DsRq#leadupchat

A1: I’m serving in a new position, and I put a lot of pressure on myself to quickly develop expertise in all areas of my work. I love to learn, but it’s hard to have a lot of areas of focus at once. #leadupchat
A1) Time limitations; mid-year benchmarks (assessing takes so much time-all assessing & little authentic contact time w/my Ss); figuring out exactly what will work for/1 particular kiddo in mind. #leadupchat
A1 Challenges causing currents are formal teacher observations, maintaining positive culture in tough times, and day to day management. We must focus on the important things though even in difficult times. #leadupchat
Constant changes to graduation requirements and options at the state level, staying ahead of drug abuse, and conducting effective meetings. #leadupchat
A1: My heart, mind and hands are constantly engaged in work around 1: equity and access 2:Keeping the arts a valued part of the educational experience of all 3: managing the high stakes testing beast #leadupchat
We have been discussing urgency among our team all year, Michael. Essential that we have team members who understand this and are willing to meet the demands of purposefully moving forward to support S success #leadupchat
Approach I take each year on professional learning: Chose an area of focus, research it & systematically connect with experts based on their results in the focus area. From those connected conversations, discover ways to improve your plans and practice. #4OCF#leadupchat
Constant changes to graduation requirements and options at the state level, staying ahead of drug abuse, and conducting effective meetings. #leadupchat
When children in our schools come from generations of poverty, abuse, addiction, etc., I want to help them see a future that breaks free from those things. #leadupchat
A2 Definitely rethinking traditional school. It is so hard to get out of that box in grading, scheduling, grouping...really in all ways. Pushing for change without being seen as a bully; that's what is hard right now. #leadupchat
A1) Time limitations; mid-year benchmarks (assessing takes so much time-all assessing & little authentic contact time w/my Ss); figuring out exactly what will work for/1 particular kiddo in mind. #leadupchat
A1. I am also thinking about how educators have a tendency to be allegiant to the policies and practices that have been pushed upon us, but did not include our input in development. Why do we so easily adopt what “others” tell us to adopt in public education? #leadupchat
Definitely keeping our staff focused and motivated under the turnaround pressure. Ultimately, they are the ones who impact our students daily. It is our job as leaders to protect them from outside distractions & stress! #leadupchat
A2: finding teacher collaboration time within the school day...small school with many subjects being taught by all middle school teachers so there is no common time to meet #leadupchat
Working hard to stay hungry, working hard to always be the model, the expectation! To be who I say I am! Relentless! My kids & staff deserve nothing less! #LeadUpChat
A1-
Budgetary cuts from the State that are beyond sensible
Emphasis of standardized testing as a means of measuring success
Cultural Apathy/ Lack of empathy
These are the big 3 working against student success right now.
#leadupchat
a2 Distractions. It is so easy to let the Urgent crowd out the important. Have to be vigilant about the important. Prioritize daily and learn to say "No" #leadupchat
A2: Most challenging for me right now, because it flows into each and everything we do, is the climate in the building and how we get Ts to stop focusing on the negative and come each day with a passion and heart that helps all of us succeed! #leadupchat
A2: I think in high school's that strong dynamic of achievement first and learning second is not just an individual school issue but a societal issue. How do we uphold passionate and invigorated learning first. #Leadupchat
A1: Staying the course (this year with the hurricane and ice days in Houston...we have missed 12 instructional days. Playing catch up and not overwhelming teachers or kids is our goal! #leadupchat
A2: Improving dialogue with my talented colleagues is crucial for my development. Improving questioning/coaching and controlling the "advice-monster."
#leadupchat
Thank you, I do feel the a lot of uncertainty for my own next steps, but the overall uncertainty makes it difficult to plot a path for supporting continued movement #leadupchat
Probably buy in. Teachers get in comfort zones or in a large district may not get trained in new initiatives. Some want to stay and some are ready to jump in to new ways of teaching. #leadupchat
agreed-there is so much coming at us & sometimes we want to take it all on but that challenge is when to know you've stretched yourself too far-only person who knows that is you #Leadupchat
A2-Being better than we were yesterday. At times, change is involved. Change is necessary yet many don't like it. Even I don't like it at times, but I understand change will happen #leadupchat
A2: innovating classrooms is the toughest: those who wanted to have, what remains are those stuck in old teaching ways and not looking to change—they are the challenge to move forward #leadupchat
I feel you, Mike! Individual appraisals of teacher performance.....we've had 25 years of PLC and we are still evaluating effectiveness one teacher at a time! LIVE IN THE NOW, people!!! It's the TEAM that matters! #leadupchat
A1 Challenges causing currents are formal teacher observations, maintaining positive culture in tough times, and day to day management. We must focus on the important things though even in difficult times. #leadupchat
It's easy to have high expectations and to beat up ourselves when we fall a little short. Sometimes easier to show patience and love for others. We need to be kind to ourselves and enjoy the journey more. #LeadUpChat
A2-
Budget cuts. We're facing some significant slashing at the State level. To the point where 40 educators are running for state office. I cannot remember it being this bad, and this boldly anti education in my career. Frustrating.
#leadupchat
Anyone that asks me as a consultant or just in passing will hear the same message. SMARTBoards will only perpetuate a teacher centered classroom. Find new ways to make it student centered. #leadupchat
A2: My most challenging is defining my role. It's new to me and to the district - so I get to make it what I want it to be - but that's difficult at the moment. #LeadUpChat
A2) Trying 2 figure out how 2 reach this 1 particular S. There r sum learning difficulties identified, but his frustration level is now effecting behavior (he's a flight risk now). I want 2 give him what he needs for him, but also for all of my class. #leadupchat
A1: 1. Closing the reading acheivement gap 2. Creating a sense of urgency 3. Helping myself and staff learn to better serve students of trauma #leadupchat
A2: Most challenging for me right now, because it flows into each and everything we do, is the climate in the building and how we get Ts to stop focusing on the negative and come each day with a passion and heart that helps all of us succeed! #leadupchat
A1: 1-student poverty/food insecurity; 2-unwillingness for people to change their practices to what’s proven to be best for students; 3-education apathy #leadupchat
A2: Resistance to change. From kids, from coworkers and from myself. Being comfortable is easy. I saw this quote from my #g2great chat and made a canva with it. My kids wrote on it the other day. All with the same thoughts but action is needed #leadupchat
A2: finding teacher collaboration time within the school day...small school with many subjects being taught by all middle school teachers so there is no common time to meet #leadupchat
Like the measurable progress piece here, Ann. Connects to our teams having a specific reference for the impact we have made to reach our goals #leadupchat
A2: Society’s view of bullying. It definitely exists! We place so much emphasis on it that sometimes children are made victims before anything happens to them. Little children will push, hit, etc. but it doesn’t make them bullies. Society is quick to label.
#LeadUpChat
A1. I am also thinking about how educators have a tendency to be allegiant to the policies and practices that have been pushed upon us, but did not include our input in development. Why do we so easily adopt what “others” tell us to adopt in public education? #leadupchat

A1 Challenges causing currents are formal teacher observations, maintaining positive culture in tough times, and day to day management. We must focus on the important things though even in difficult times. #leadupchat
A2 See evaluations as more than a check box compliance-its a time for authentic coaching conversations that help build growth-finding time for these conversations & long sit downs observing teaching/learning is the daily struggle #leadupchat
A3-
We have to decide whether or not as a state we value education, or value lining the pockets of those would seek to see education as a business. My state right now is having great difficulty answering this question.
#Leadupchat#kyga18
Today's chat is sequential, so please use this as a reference! Please RT for those who might jump in late! There are 6 questions, but the first 5 are the most connected. #leadupchat
Yes, and creating three courses that have modules with videos from teachers and grading scholars on a comprehensive set of topics. Many of our favorite examples will be included. #leadupchat#sblchat#tg2chat
Which came first- changes in grading or changes on the report card? That's a battle that I see as there are more discussions about needed changes. #leadupchat
No, I didn’t know about this. In the State’s quest for options, it creates a nightmare for districts to manage all of them! I’m hoping our State is learning from others! #leadupchat
A2: Adults being adults. It’s most difficult to see professionals or parent adults who allow their biases or issues to get in the way of good for kids #leadupchat
A2. I am perplexed by why it is after all these years educators are being led by and adopting demands of non-practitioners. I have to ask myself, would a doctor accept direction from a non-medical professional? It’s really that simple. 🤓 #leadupchat
Balancing the weight of rigor and fun. Balancing the pressure of testing and classroom practices. THE TEST shouldn't be the most important thing BUT . . . It's how our school success is measured by the state #Leadupchat
That's so true! I keep trying different things, & I'm not giving up. But, so far, I haven't quite discovered how to reach him. Every day is a new opportunity. #leadupchat
#leadupchat
I am with you. Not only is there fear of losing contentment, but there is also the unwillingness to invest the work sometimes. That can be tough for a leader! #leadupchat
A2: Resistance to change. From kids, from coworkers and from myself. Being comfortable is easy. I saw this quote from my #g2great chat and made a canva with it. My kids wrote on it the other day. All with the same thoughts but action is needed #leadupchat
I've been chirping about this for two years. We read endlessly about collective efficacy, but observe and judge teachers one-by-one. Such a hypocrisy! #leadupchat
A2: the balance of it all comes with keeping the expectations high and fostering growth in all stakeholders without making anyone feel as if the work they have invested is “not enough”. #coaching#feedback#Accountability#culture#leadupchat
A1/A2: Time, money, facilities - facilities being number one. We are outgrowing our physical campus, so class sizes have to be bigger. We also have to have some K Ts sharing a classroom. #leadupchat
A1 I’m learning so much in this 1st year of my new role. Not knowing all the answers & being ok with that while, at the same time, busting it to lead a successful program, create & implement innovative initiatives, & build relationships and trust has me treading it! #leadupchat
Good point. When ever we are discussing rolling out something new, I always ask about our plan to sustain the initiative year after year. If there is not a plan to sustain an initiative from the get go - result will be short lived. #LeadUpChat
After working on that for 12 years, I can tell you the culture and classroom assessment practices have to come before the report card changes. Or at least along with it. Otherwise, crash and burn. #leadupchat
Which came first- changes in grading or changes on the report card? That's a battle that I see as there are more discussions about needed changes. #leadupchat
A2: the balance of it all comes with keeping the expectations high and fostering growth in all stakeholders without making anyone feel as if the work they have invested is “not enough”. #coaching#feedback#Accountability#culture#leadupchat
A2: Inquiry Based Learning is toughest, because I'm not in a position to put this in place 'officially', but it's a vital piece to making tech use more effective. #leadupchat
A2 communication- we are all paddling as fast as we can. Finding time to talk is a challenge. The bigger challenge though is listening w/o judgement. Everyone wants what is best for kids and understanding that is the first step. #leadupchat
A1- 1. Locating all mental health needs in our school. 2. Providing the right amount of whole group, small group, and individual counseling services. 3. Meeting the needs of EVERY child socially, personally, and academically. #leadupchat
A2 Getting all staff to be helping students move toward creating with tech rather than just consuming or not at all. Difficult concept for some. #leadupchat
Collective efficacy is proven in countless meta-analysis studies to have a high Impact on student achievement. I’ve yet to read the same about T observations. #leadupchat
People change when they care enough that they want to. When they know enough that they are able to or when they hurt enough that they have to. #LeadUpChat@JohnCMaxwell
I think it comes from a shift in school culture. It needs to be shocking that any professional would choose not to innovate. Otherwise, we will continue with how it's always been done. Our kids deserve better. #leadupchat
A1: 1. Pushing against outdated curriculum 2. outdated pedagogy 3. Being able to have real and raw conversations about change for students A2: The most challenging out of these is the last one! Creating action around the needed changes. #leadupchat
A2 Varying perspectives about about how we move forward is a barrier. In response to this, as leaders, we are charged to receive these perspectives, plot the course for progress, and support our team along the way #leadupchat
#leadupchat
A2. Practitioners are the best people to inform what works and what won’t. No other profession in the world is guided by out of field folks except public education. Tech giants aren’t looking to culinary arts professionals for expertise. We must OWN our profession. #leadupchat
A2: The challenge for me right now is in finding balance.
Taking in as much as I can learn...
Taking on as much as I can handle...
While still taking care of my most important roles as husband and dad.
#leadupchat
That's what I think too. :) Little changes in classroom culture/assessment over time drive conversations and changes in mindsets. Much better than throwing a "have to do or else" and fighting a bigger battle. #leadupchat
Ask the Ts - what would you be willing to do or sacrifice to make this conversation happen? If they see value, they'll help you find that time. #leadupchat
A2. I’ve had to extend myself plenty of grace in the “not knowing all the answers" department. I’ve been reminded how it feels to have that disequilibrium as a learner… it’s been a valuable lesson. #leadupchat
A2: maximizing instructional time and still focusing on relationships and having a little fun is the key! We practiced fun on Friday morning before 1st period! #worthit#leadupchat
#leadupchat
A2 ~ Supporting ELL and special education Ss as they prepare for graduation exams is challenging. We have 5 months and an 8 period day with a completely scheduled teaching staff. Also, many Ss are frustrated as they have taken exams many times! #Leadupchat
A2: Poverty is such a massive hurdle. Frankly I don’t blame students one bit. If I was constantly worried about being evicted or where my next meal was coming from, I would find it hard to focus on school too. It breaks my heart to see kids struggle like that. #leadupchat
A3: Are we asking students to do high end clerical work for the audience of one teacher or making a real difference in a world that needs it? @DKriedeman#leadupchat
Agree, wholeheartedly with this, Paula. For those who are comfortable with complacency, we have to have conversations about if they are in the right seat or if they belong on the bus at all #leadupchat
A2: The challenge is communication during change leadership. Communicate clearly. Share The Why. Monitor the Desired Outcomes. Celebrate Small Wins. #LeadUpChat
For clarity … I don’t mean new computers and better software assessments. I am referring to authentic audience, PBL, and other forms of assessment. #leadupchat
A2. Expertise in public education isn’t widespread, contrary to popular belief. Just because you attended school doesn’t mean you know how to run one. Thanks. #leadupchat
Collective efficacy is proven in countless meta-analysis studies to have a high Impact on student achievement. I’ve yet to read the same about T observations. #leadupchat
A3) What is my S feeling? What are his challenges? What does he need from me? From the school? From all the adults in his life here to help & support him? How else can I make this content accessible? #leadupchat
That's what I think too. :) Little changes in classroom culture/assessment over time drive conversations and changes in mindsets. Much better than throwing a "have to do or else" and fighting a bigger battle. #leadupchat
I find beauty in your words, Chrys! Building capacity intentionally is essential yet not explicitly defined/planned for by many districts, often due to unfamiliarity & mandates. Building capacity is not linear. When championed, valued from the top, it can transform #leadupchat
Same here, Jonathan. Have been reflecting on next steps to increase capacity in our team members through delegation to build their leadership toolkit #leadupchat
A2: The challenge of serving students of trauma and poverty to learn to high levels; making sure their social/emotional needs are met, while receiving world class core instruction and interventions for academic and social/emotional/ mental health! #leadupchat
I am, and I have a few that have joined the party, but to be honest - it just isn't moving forward fast enough. I want to help more of the Ss in front of us now - not wait for the class of 2025. #leadupchat
A2. Expertise in public education isn’t widespread, contrary to popular belief. Just because you attended school doesn’t mean you know how to run one. Thanks. #leadupchat
Let them know they don't have to ask for permission. Celebrate mistakes- "Well, we now know one more thing that doesn't work, keep trying." #leadupchat
A3 Essential question: What are the most important things we need to teach our students, how will we know they know, and how will we tell them what they know? How much of what we are asking of them is related to those "most important things"? #leadupchat
A3: Not really any questions needed, but All the hard conversations are happening & moving the current. The parent piece is hardest however, exposing them to their bias when they believe they’re doing their best is heart hard #leadupchat
But school is a place where some of those basic needs can be met. And I want school to be a window on the world, where kids can see a different future possibly. #leadupchat
same here-I find my answers to questions I'm asked being more "I don't know but lets find out together" than any definitive answer #dailylearner#leadupchat
A2: The challenge is communication during change leadership. Communicate clearly. Share The Why. Monitor the Desired Outcomes. Celebrate Small Wins. #LeadUpChat
The key is to develop resiliency so that people feel strong enough to work, continue learning, and balance life. You obviously have that quality. How do we develop it in others? Students need us to be resilient. That is what leads to change and impact. #leadupchat
A3: I think the essential question for me is "What is the work that kids most need me to do and about which I am most passionate to accomplish?" #leadupchat
A3: Continue to show off ways where a learning first/achievement second approach benefits students and communities. Thinking also about doing more to tie learning first and the development of soft skills. #LeadUpChat
A3: We need to ask the question "What and Who are we here for?" If it is the students then we need to do everything we can, if it is for ourselves then we need to reflect on if this is the right place for us. #LeadUpChat
A3: what are we actually losing in not creating time for teacher collaboration and observation of one another? How can we get more buy in on a creative schedule to help this small school? #leadupchat
If we do not innovate in our schools, we will cease to be relevant. Ex. Blockbuster, refused to innovate - had the opportunity w/ Netflix and turned it down. As a result, they no longer exist. #LeadUpChat
A2b: Lack of compassion from adults who don’t see, don’t consider, or don’t care about the hurdles our students have to climb outside our school walls is not okay. We need to be compassionate educators first and foremost. #leadupchat#KidsDeserveIt
A3: Lead With Questions. Ask Where are we? Where are we going? How will we get there? Who will support the change process? What needs to be communicated? What will happen if the change process is delayed or implemented incorrectly? #LeadUpChat
Couldn’t have worded it better. Same here...and establishing community culture of tolerance and empathy from families. These kids are labeled by some as “bad” or “bullies” because of their struggles. Advocation for them is vital in order to break the cycle. #leadupchat
A2: The challenge of serving students of trauma and poverty to learn to high levels; making sure their social/emotional needs are met, while receiving world class core instruction and interventions for academic and social/emotional/ mental health! #leadupchat
A3: Are my classroom practices and the excitement that my students leave and talk about enough to encourage others to want to know more? Will it make others ask is this what's best for student learning? #leadupchat
This right here! It’s one of the most important q’s we have to continually ask ourself as educators committed to making a difference! #leadupchat#WGEDD#kidsdeserveit
A2-Finding a balance between counseling services. I love being in the classroom and running small groups, but know that there are days I need to be accessible and holding individual sessions. My goal is to be in my office less and out with kids more! #leadupchat
The key is to develop resiliency so that people feel strong enough to work, continue learning, and balance life. You obviously have that quality. How do we develop it in others? Students need us to be resilient. That is what leads to change and impact. #leadupchat
A3: when the currents get rough, the question we must always return to is #why. Why are we here? Why are we doing ______? Why is it or isn’t ______ effective? #leadupchat
A3: How can Inquiry Based Learning help our students understand content at a deeper level, and help them apply that knowledge to solve real world problems? #leadupchat
Q3: Do you want to be here? Do your students and co-workers sense and feel your enthusiasm? Did you leave your baggage at the door? Are you ready to find the positive that is there just begging to be unwrapped and shared? #leadupchat
A3: How does this shift the paradigm from adult comfort to student driven/centered/owned learning? What indicators will parents, families, community point to in order to say that our school is providing #futureready learning? #leadupchat
Love these crucial conversations on the side about different currents. @bethhill2829 and @asbellprincipal are having a FANTASTIC one on bullying. Check it out!! #leadupchat
This is a key component for the majority of us, Aaron. Since we are passionate about our work, we are constantly engaged in activities that help our teams reach goals. However, it's essential that we take time to rejuvenate #leadupchat
Aye, there's a rub! What about admin covering to free up observing T or budgeting subs for such a purpose? Perhaps poor substitute, but video clips of lesson could time-shift observation opportunities. I feel current pushing against us & we're still paddling :) #leadupchat
A3: Lead With Questions. Ask Where are we? Where are we going? How will we get there? Who will support the change process? What needs to be communicated? What will happen if the change process is delayed or implemented incorrectly? #LeadUpChat
A3: Lead With Questions. Ask Where are we? Where are we going? How will we get there? Who will support the change process? What needs to be communicated? What will happen if the change process is delayed or implemented incorrectly? #LeadUpChat
A3: Are we as educators fulfilling our professional responsibility to be lifelong learners in order to offer our students the best possible educational experience?
#leadupchat
This chat is fun and energizing to be sure - but as I watch all of these upstream currents being listed, I find myself saying "me too!" and my top three is like: 1a, b, c. 2 a, b, c. Yikes! #LeadUpChat
A3: In what ways can I educate families and community about advocation for all kids, helping children and their families learn acceptance, tolerance, and empathy toward kids with mental health/behavioral disorders and trauma effects? #leadupchat
Model the need for rest, and take time to talk about it. Some folks are great at resting, but others don’t see that part of their practice (and then can’t learn from it). #leadupchat
Apologize for the spam that's infiltrating the chat. It's an upstream current when you're LIGHTING the twitterverse ON FIRE as professionally hungry tribespeople! #leadupchat

A3. My essential questions: 1. What are the probable consequences if we don’t restore our profession? 2. How can we be more courageous as practitioners to advocate for our profession? 3. What will become of our children & public education if we don’t speak up now? #leadupchat
If we do not innovate in our schools, we will cease to be relevant. Ex. Blockbuster, refused to innovate - had the opportunity w/ Netflix and turned it down. As a result, they no longer exist. #LeadUpChat
A3: We have to rework instructional calendars to make it all fit due to lost time from bad weather days. It can and will be done...just takes planning and follow through. #leadupchat
A3: Where are we going? How do we get there? What do we already have to help? What do we need? How will we know when we’ve arrived? All questions that must be asked on our journey! #leadupchat
Naomi Austin!! Thank you for this good morning gif. 😊😊 I can’t wait to hang out again. I so appreciate your enthusiasm, your vision, & your voice/insights. Aaaaand we laugh together!! #leadupchat
Yes - this is something I am thinking about right now as a director of curriculum. I want to have teachers thinking about this globally across the district! #leadupchat
A3: Knowing this - you will be remembered by all of those students. You will make a difference in their lives. The question - what kind of memories or impact do you want to have? #leadupchat
I've subbed as the parent for kids who don't have anyone else to support them in a meeting about their behavior with staff/other parents. "I love _____ and that's why I'm here today." #leadupchat
A3 Focus EQ for innovation: How can we do this better? Other EQs: What is our purpose? How do we structure our focus to meet this purpose? How do we build up our team to help us achieve our purpose? How do we ignore distractions from our purpose? #leadupchat
A3. How can I play a critical role in making the profession healthy again? How do I support my fellow colleagues in their work as educators? What will my legacy be and how will I be remembered as an educator? #leadupchat
Stumbled across #leadupchat this AM and wondering why I’m just now seeing this community?!? Excellent conversation from educators willing to push the envelope. #ineededtheinspiration
A3 start with "is this something that I need to do NOW?' focus on the small humans & what they need first-learning opportunities-safety-relationships-basic needs then worry about compliance stuff later #leadupchat
Stumbled across #leadupchat this AM and wondering why I’m just now seeing this community?!? Excellent conversation from educators willing to push the envelope. #ineededtheinspiration
A4: The high stakes testing culture. Thankful that some colleges are starting to rely on this less for acceptance and more on a variety of well-rounded measurements. #Leadupchat
To borrow from our Superintendent @DrBradBuck "We must deliver on the promise for every learner to be #FutureReady." We form a compact, a commitment with the parents and families who entrust their kids to us. That requires bold leadership and a relentless drive. #leadupchat
All very good questions that require action steps. Too important to leave to chance. We need to be focused and intentional about what we are trying to accomplish. #LeadUpChat
So true! What good is proficiency on a set of content-based knowledge if students can’t use that to be creative, collaborate, think, and problem solve. We need change quickly! #leadupchat
A4: I don’t want compliance. We are striving for contribution and reflection from each teacher. Compliance is teaching from a script. Contribution is taking the recipe, adding your own ingredients, and improving the guaranteed curriculum. #LeadUpChat
A4: Time, listening skills for both parties & the investments vision. The vision to do amazing & Change our fate for kids is critical to change the current! #leadupchat
A4: It's really time - I need to take time to engage in more reading and in white space thinking. But the emails and daily management items are getting in the way - but that is because I am letting them. Working on that. #LeadUpChat
Sorry to pop in late. ❤️this. Also bringing curiosity about what drives teacher resistance. Often it's not obstinacy. It's fear. Kegan and Lahey's Immunity to Change process is 🏆to surface the hidden commitments that can keep Ts frozen. #LeadUpChathttps://t.co/YTl1igDDhf
A4: Assumptions made by families about their child’s classmates who have mental health/behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, trauma effects, Autism, etc.
They are often quickly assumed to be mean kids or bullies, but they aren’t. #leadupchat
A4 Time, Upstream feed beyond local control. Its time to look at schedule, staff alignment, content connections, class length, etc.. in different ways. #leadupchat
A4: Finding Ts willing to take risks w/ Inquiry is tough. It's a dramatic shift & they need more time to train & plan. New for Ss too, so it takes time for them to adapt. Unfortunately, it's not going to happen overnight. #leadupchat
A4: w/ New dyslexia law I am concerned w/ the amount of time spent that will be spent on compliance next year. I’m hoping to add a teacher but will see if it happens . #leadupchat
😊Keri!! I love this! My PLN has been a huge support & asset to me in the past 7 months! This is one of the major reasons why being connected is so critical as an educator! #leadupchat#myplnismysuperpower
A4 Stagnancy and time. The all-consuming power of testing makes it so difficult to push beyond what works well enough. Time is dedicated to test scores, not testing what might work better for our students. #leadupchat
Q4: how to address issues with co-workers and call them on their behavior while still having a positive working relationship, support, an action plan and time to make some changes #leadupchat
I absolutely love this! I don't want compliance either, but I have found that many teachers want to operate from compliance - "just tell what to do and how to do it." I want buy in and authenticity, people! #leadupchat
A4: I don’t want compliance. We are striving for contribution and reflection from each teacher. Compliance is teaching from a script. Contribution is taking the recipe, adding your own ingredients, and improving the guaranteed curriculum. #LeadUpChat
Agreed! The the vast majority are giving all they got. As leaders we must ensure time we are investing is the best use and focuses on the most impactful practices. If we aren’t moving the needle, we have to refocus while celebrating where the needle is moving! #leadupchat
A1: Sorry!! Arriving on the scene late!!
1. Being reassigned to a different building (Not just me. All PreK)
2. Getting all PreK assessments done before conferences.
3. Unanswered questions about how next school year will look at our new location. #leadupchat
A4: Finding Ts willing to take risks w/ Inquiry is tough. It's a dramatic shift & they need more time to train & plan. New for Ss too, so it takes time for them to adapt. Unfortunately, it's not going to happen overnight. #leadupchat
A4: I think it is just message really, the How of getting a shift in uncertainty is where I think the hold up is. #leadupchat My kids struggle with freedom to choose way more than I anticipated.
A4: Collaboration and Infusing new ideas into our current system. Our contracts do not foster time for Ts to work together and design experiences for students. Ts will never "go into my room and close the door again.” We must be connected for Ss! #leadupchat
Though isn't that research often contrary? Not saying that's reason *not* to act, just that action may involve frequent tacking -- course adjustments as we read shifting currents & winds & check direction against our personal or institutional compass. #leadupchat
A3- "Where am I needed most today? Each day is a new day. Did a child experience trauma the night before and need my attention today? Is a grade level losing focus on school work due to disrespect or bullying? Where am I needed and how can I help? #leadupchat
A4.There seems to be an unwillingnessto talk about the REAL reasons teachers are leaving the profession&student enrollment in ed prep programs is drastically ⬇️ Folks quick to blame it on poor leadership & say compensation isn’t the issue. Who’s asking the teachers? #leadupchat
That one is so tricky because I know so many teachers believe there is a better way but fear of the impact on test scores keeps them from trying new things. #leadupchat
Alright #leadupchat—It’s time for me to practice some of that balance I was talking about.
@PrincipalPaul thanks for the push this morning.
Y’all have a great week!
A4-
High stakes testing
Compliant driven policy
Spending more time on inspirational quotes than policy change
Fear of being scolded for advocating for sound policy
Lax response to abusive behavior by students, parents, staff
More mental health to address the above
#leadupchat
A3: How can I help to support the building of self efficacy in both educators and students so that we can answer the question What is best for our kids? #kidsneedsfirst#leadupchat
a2 Distractions. It is so easy to let the Urgent crowd out the important. Have to be vigilant about the important. Prioritize daily and learn to say "No" #leadupchat
They also need the freedom to fail. They need to know that admin is okay with it not going well and not being perfect. They have to be confident that what they are attempting is good for kids and when it doesn't work they haven't harmed kids. #leadupchat
A4 ~ Time in the school day ~ both in the Ss & Ts’ schedules. Also, providing all Ss with the appropriate supports needed for learning, especially when most Ts have 150 Ss in their caseload! #leadupchat
A4 Helping people to find the balance of doing the right work while taking care of their personal life. When overwhelmed people shutdown which leads to nowhere fast. #LeadUpChat
I miss the heck out of you Keri Skeeters!! I’m crossing my fingers, closing my eyes & asking....will you be at #metc18? Yes?! Im thinking we can still get together —in your hometown STL!! 🙏🙏#leadupchat#moedchat
Modeling that risk taking as leaders can show the way. And that means making mistakes public - not only modeling those things that are sure fire wins. #LeadUpChat

we are in a similar boat here in NV but I'm finding the screener my Ts are doing is providing some great insights-but yes there is a bit of paper work involved #unintendedconcequences#Leadupchat

Agree. As we challenge &set parameters for growth we have to recognize that all our learners (Ss&Ts) sit on a continuum. What do they need to move forward? #leadupchat

So important to remember. I think one of the big mistakes we make in education and leadership is not giving ourselves enough time to let a new idea work. #leadupchat
I've changed my teaching this year. No math HW sheets. I am thinking of getting rid of HW completely- encourage reading and journaling.
No grades on papers, even though it does go in gradebook. Kids just see highlighted mistakes. #leadupchat
A3: Not only are we moving all PreK to a different building, we are also going to a full-day program! Concern for how that's going to look and how we will get our plan time, among other logistics. #leadupchat
That mindset of "freedom to fail" is so important. I feel bad for those that don't have the privilege in working in an environment like that. #LeadUpChat
I think the answers are all in your brilliant brain and your lovely heart. It's about focusing on what you think will most benefit students and start moving that direction. I'm going to start some new conversations about this on Monday - excited! #leadupchat
A4-Time, prioritization, and management. As a counselor, days usually don't go as expected. I'm a planner, so not having my plan go the way I imagined it to gives me a sense of anxiety at times. It's something I'm working through this year. #leadupchat
A5: I have come to terms with this is how it's going to be. I'm just really going to miss the people in my current building. They are so dynamic and caring! I don't want to lose that momentum in a new building. #leadupchat
A5: I probably sound like a broken record (do people understand what that is anymore?) but the societal pressure and culture of achievement first is a significant challenge. #Leadupchat
I believe we have that freedom from some people but not part of the whole culture. So even if admin says 'go for it', there's not much other support. #leadupchat
A5: During the 2nd Semester, You Will Hear One Or More Educators Say, “The Morale Is Lower Than Ever.” Challenge That Statement https://t.co/MBdtmvkyqN#LeadUpChat
Wow. This might be most concise summary of challenges in ed I've seen. Other than the mental health issue, they are all technical and can be fixed w some leadership courage. #leadupchat
A5: People complaining about lack of time. Time is the same for everyone. How we use that time is critical. There is always time for what we value as most important.
#leadupchat
A5 FEAR... Ts are afraid of evals, afraid of assessments, afraid of walk-ins, etc... We have made Ts the evil of all ed convos. Ts have families, hopes, carers. Time to honor the license and the ed. allow a active and structural voice. Make The positives So loud #leadupchat
Learn from my mistake when I made this change- communicate, communicate, communicate with the parents! I got beat up a bit because parents wanted to see worksheets, packets, etc. that they'd seen in the past. Educate parents too with ed changes. #LeadUpChat
#leadupchat A5 - Don’t be afraid to lead. Put your face into the wind and chart your path. Never criticize without a plan. It’s always about getting better. How can we all improve.
A5. I’ve decided to divorce the mindset that we-the practitioners must accept what is done to us. I reject that. I’m on this new 💡 idea of practitioners leading the way and I believe it will result in better results for students because the educators OWN the work! #leadupchat
A5: The ability to be open minded & non- self centered. The world is bigger than we are in tiny little Stockton, KS. We must open our mindset to fail so that we can succeed & act accordingly as adults raising the future & the bar. #leadupchat
#leadupchat A5 - Don’t be afraid to lead. Put your face into the wind and chart your path. Never criticize without a plan. It’s always about getting better. How can we all improve.
Yep - me too! But it's everywhere. It's also perception. So often the almighty "THEY" do not let us get good things done for kids because we have it in our minds that "THEY" won't let us. I hear this so often and wonder who that big meanie "THEY" is. #LeadUpChat
The need to control people and curriculum at the expense of students. Why are we still controlling curriculum that students do not connect with? (To say the least) These are real and raw currents I’m swimming against everyday. #leadupchat
A3: How can we change perceptions Ts have of the need for accountability which means admin responsibilities over and above their teaching? And how can we ease their workload to free them up to spend time planning which is perceived as the fun part? #leadupchat
Plus be careful about initiative overload/ burnout. Before adopting any new initiative #StartWithWhy. If you can't explain why It's needed, you'll have a hard time getting buy-in. #leadupchat
A5: During the 2nd Semester, You Will Hear One Or More Educators Say, “The Morale Is Lower Than Ever.” Challenge That Statement https://t.co/MBdtmvkyqN#LeadUpChat
We can’t save time and we certainly can’t create more time. The only thing we can do is use time. How are use that time is up to us. We always make time for the things we want to do. #LeadupChat
It's interesting that we often assume Ts resistance is about obstinacy or laziness but then are surprised and rebuking when Ts mirror that same response to Ss behavior. Empathy is for everyone. #LeadUpChat

This is difficult, but talking about a failure with students/parents and SHOWING them how this was necessary to lead to something better might be important. Don't just tell -- help folks see. #LeadUpChat
And it's current that we've been battling forever. What's holding us down in terms of engaging students with curriculum? I know I struggled as a teacher, too. #leadupchat

Thanks for sharing this. The dreaded 3rd quarter is not only amongst us - we are smack in the middle of it. This is actually the BEST time to try new things to shake it up a little - #tlap ideas, @breakoutEDU etc.. #leadupchat
A5) I have to be willing to lead, and take those risks. Just yesterday, i did something that might ruffles feathers. Do I care, yes but it is worth the risk, yes. Lead or get out of the way! #LeadUpChat
A2: Poverty is such a massive hurdle. Frankly I don’t blame students one bit. If I was constantly worried about being evicted or where my next meal was coming from, I would find it hard to focus on school too. It breaks my heart to see kids struggle like that. #leadupchat

A5: Unleashing people who are afraid too invest in change. Education has fostered a “I’ll wait out this program until the pendulum sings again.” Leaders must listen and help Ts build lasting change to prepare Ss for an uncertain world. #leadupchat
So many times it's a previous perception of admin. New admin don't have same mindset, but gossip & negative culture perpetuates something that's long gone. #leadupchat
And we can always "change" time by/for what we value in our buildings. We have 8hrs (alomst) every day, 5 days a week, 180 or more a year. Why must it always look the same? #leadupchat
A5: Fixed mindset is a huge problem. If educators don't believe the research, can't get behind alternative teaching practices, and refuse to budge, students will suffer. Our country will suffer. #leadupchat
Agreed! And it's important to help folks understand that trying something new doesn't necessarily mean it's an "initiative." Connect new practices to current initiatives. #LeadUpChat

a5 Fear. To confront people, to honestly evaluate my own practices, to stand up against educational malpractice we are all being asked to participate in. It's scary. #leadupchat
A5: Cohesion - we are a new campus. Still trying to find strengths and passions on the team and put people in the the right seat on the bus. #LeadUpChat
A5: Stagnation, the “we’ve always done it this way” mentality, or fear of change. I was told other day that I shouldn’t use computers/google classroom with my students because I would work myself out of a job. If that’s the case, then so be it. I won’t hold Ss back. #leadupchat
We continue to struggle against this since we have state and federal accountability measures that include standardized test. It's tough to shift thinking about curriculum/instruction if you feel confident that current (and old) practices bring success on those tests. #leadupchat
Completely agree. Glad I am not only one dealing with this, sad that I am not only one seeing this. Assumptions happen too quick, growth is blocked by dredging up past. #leadupchat
There are shifts and there are fads. To understand the diff I skim ed news headlines every day & read a few. I don't see "top-down" initiatives, I see an amazing district that knows what's coming & in position to roll with it. #leadupchat
A5. Educators are perfectly capable of leading our profession. What we need help with is reducing poverty, quality housing & healthcare for our children & their families, reducing trauma-violence, alcoholism, and drug abuse, & mental health support for our students 🤓 #leadupchat
I think there is also simply the natural human pull to become stagnant and comfortable. That is why it is important to find things like the #LeadUpChat to fight against it. Also, the community can lift us up.
I couldn't agree with this more! I think engaging admin, teachers, and parents in activities where failure could occur is so helpful! WE can truly see the value then. #leadupchat
There is so much negative swirling in schools (which reflect society). I think the biggest changes happen when we become a positive supporter of people. Not just words. Be there. Talk about the issues honestly. CARE #LeadUpChat
A6: Stay the course and understand slow change is change. Site led changes stick especially if they are lead by Ts. Visionaries like @lorrah_hogue, @tom_voris and @KristinaVsqz are literally changing the school they love! #leadupchat
Yes, which leads me to the question, Whi has defined success in education? Have we boiled down the worth of our work and profession to one question: Did the kids pass the test? Shameful. #leadupchat
A5c: The shifts in education cannot just be believed and supported by the educators, they have to be believed and supported by the people who contril the flow of resouces so that recources can be used in new ways. #leadupchat
Our work-life balance is critical. Resiliency. That’s it. And we build it & fortify it by taking care of ourselves mind, body, spirit. It is imperative that our T’s know learn this as well. #leadupchat
A5) Support from our Support Services department; working closely w/the parents & therapist; keep learning more about what I can do to help & support my S. #leadupchat
I forget which book I read about a "failure board" in a classroom to highlight successes that came from failures. Maybe we need that as educators as well. #LeadUpChat
I think there is also simply the natural human pull to become stagnant and comfortable. That is why it is important to find things like the #LeadUpChat to fight against it. Also, the community can lift us up.
Now here’s something for us to think about. What’s your definition of success in this field? Whose definition have you adopted? Is it your own or have you pledged allegiance to someone else’s idea? This brain of mine....🤓 #leadupchat
A6: I'm so blessed to be surrounded by INCREDIBLE educators that make me better and inspire me daily! But our students are my greatest driver. They help keep me grounded, focused and persistent when I feel like an outlier in this work. #leadupchat
This reminds me: we need to teach negative numbers and place value at lower grades: 21-18=(20-10)+(1-8)=10-7=3
233-77=200+(30-70)+(3-7)=
200-40-4=160-4=156
#math#mathchat#leadupchat
Not the "way we have always done it," but a mental way that does always work.
This is important. As a parent I appreciate the learning experience from failure, but we’d benefit from a common definition of what we mean by “fail.” We may be talking about different things. #leadupchat
This is difficult, but talking about a failure with students/parents and SHOWING them how this was necessary to lead to something better might be important. Don't just tell -- help folks see. #LeadUpChat
A6 The communities I have found online through Facebook and Twitter are a huge help. My 1st big step was going #gradeless. Next step will be pushing my team to do the same. #leadupchat
That is why it has to be about unleashing people by meeting them where they are. If it is about how each person can improve, and not about a program, there is no need to wait for the pendulum! One size fits all will not work for Ts any better than it does for our Ss #leadupchat
Q6: Blessed to have a core team that amazingly serves as a problem solving team and sounding board for the campus, but at the end of the day its takes a village so I would include ALL my @PollyRyonMS RUNNERS...that are making@it happen in the trenches! #leadupchat
This question right here is one we continue to ask and struggle to address. I'm VERY interested in pursuing this - let's start breaking down those barriers of time to do something awesome! #leadupchat
It's time to be different and to take risks to do things differently. This is my fifth year in education and sometimes I feel like I have to fall in line with what others want to do or making their visions come alive. I have to stay true to my own vision. #leadupchat
In the past, many leaders viewed Programs as change and quick solutions. ("I can buy this thing then teachers will use it and Ss will succeed,”) We need to know our why and understand culture is not a program. Listen to the humans and solve meaningful problems. #leadupchat
Same old story, educators wanting kids to learn but unwilling themselves. Leaders here and those that we nurture will change education for the better! #leadupchat
A5: Fixed mindset is a huge problem. If educators don't believe the research, can't get behind alternative teaching practices, and refuse to budge, students will suffer. Our country will suffer. #leadupchat
