  • socialeducator Dec 5 @ 9:06 PM EST
Hi everyone. I’m Katrina also known as a 1st grade teacher out of Washington, DC. #BmoreEdchat
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:08 PM EST
Interactions is such a simple yet powerful way to define SEL. I also would say we interact with ourselves internally. Sometimes we have two minds! #BmoreEdchat
    • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1. I define social emotional learning as education around self and others in terms of social interactions... #BMoreEdChat
      In reply to @bmoreedchat
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:09 PM EST
I really like this definition.. it was what I was trying to say but a lot better. :) #BMoreEdChat
    • Owl_b_TorresEdu Dec 5 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1: SEL to me means how we deal with ourselves (coping skills) in order to deal with the world around us. #BmoreEdchat
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:09 PM EST
I teach courses for staff about Ethnic Groups in American Society. Its one of the courses for new educators entering the district who haven't done multicultural coursework. #BmoreEdchat

    Only two minds? Sometimes I feel like I have 3 - 4 ... hehehe #BMoreEdChat

  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:13 PM EST
Using the wheel that @justincholbrook just posted (I need to read more about it), the most important is the responsible decision-making. I can't make great decisions, unless the other four buckets are full #BmoreEdchat

  • Owl_b_TorresEdu Dec 5 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2: To me, self-awareness is huge...if we aren't aware we don't know how to fix it or have the right mindset to seek help. #BmoreEdchat

  • DanKos3 Dec 5 @ 9:15 PM EST
Self awareness - I feel it can lead to responsible decision making and social awareness. Just had a conversation about why it was necessary to clap at someone dropping a tray. How does that impact the student who dropped the tray? #BmoreEdChat
  • MsTuckerRocksPE Dec 5 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2: I feel that they all have value. I will say that in Physical Education self-awareness and self-management are key as Ss engage in physical activity that requires them to move independently and in relations to others. #BmoreEdChat
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:16 PM EST
Yup. Many exist, oftentimes its not called #SEL tho.... This work takes place in different types of mentoring programs, after school activities, and for some, right in the classroom (where it should be) #BMoreEdChat
    In reply to @EducatedAce, @MsTuckerRocksPE, @justincholbrook
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:16 PM EST
Self-awareness is huge I think apart of self-awareness is the idea of others-awareness of self. The idea that our percieved self-awareness may not be what other's perceive and there are things we can do to improve. if that makes sense... #BmoreEdChat
    In reply to @Owl_b_TorresEdu
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: Starts with self awareness and self management. One cannot interact unless one is confident in one's own social emotional skills. #BmoreEdchat
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:17 PM EST
I honestly cant choose, all are necessary and critical elements for healthy and productive living. #BMoreEdChat
  • MsTuckerRocksPE Dec 5 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: In Health Education, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision making are key because Ss learn about the relationships they have with others (peers, friends, family) and decision making is a skill that they practice in class. #BmoreEdChat
  • Owl_b_TorresEdu Dec 5 @ 9:17 PM EST
Yes!! Totally get what you are saying...even as an adult I wasn't aware that my tone of voice often conveyed a different message than I intended...had to become "aware" then I could shift it. #BmoreEdchat

A2:Empathy..Creating an environment that does not require my Ss w/ Emotional disabilities to EXPLAIN their actions ALL the time. Your setbacks on not on trial. You don’t have to RElive your Pain. Let’s move forward for your growth. #BmoreEdChat
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:18 PM EST
Hey Katrina, positive interactions are key! #BMoreEdChat
    In reply to @socialeducator
  • Samuel_Karns Dec 5 @ 9:19 PM EST
A1 SEL to me is teaching kids and adults the skills to manage emotions, build positive relationships, & being able to make good choices, it puts a focus on the #WholeChild & takes everyone in the village to support the SEL environment #BmoreEdChat
  • raleshevich Dec 5 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: I would heighten self awareness and believe mindfulness is a great tool - learning to be in the moment increases your awareness, improves focus and decision making. #BmoreEdchat
  • bmoreedchat - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:20 PM EST
Q3. What are reasons why SEL is not a colorblind practice? #BmoreEdchat
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:20 PM EST
Learning to be in a moment.. and not feel the need to create one is so essential. We often overlook the meaning our students place in just being, especially when they are on task. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @raleshevich
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:21 PM EST
The importance of the #SEL competency varies on the student and the developmental stage that they may be in. This work looks vastly different at the primary vs. secondary levels. #bmoreedchat
  • Owl_b_TorresEdu Dec 5 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: Great question! Society sees color, reacts to color, judges color...if we don't acknowledge color as part of #SEL we aren't preparing our Ss for the real world, the world where skin color does affect us. #BmoreEdchat
  • Samuel_Karns Dec 5 @ 9:22 PM EST

Putting my students hearts first. I have a new resolve to make sure I am making eye contact with each of my students everyday to make sure they know I am seeing them.

  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:22 PM EST
Good point, Randy. Start with the self and work outwards. #BmoreEdChat
    In reply to @raleshevich
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3: THIS is a great question. Social emotional learning changes based upon every individual student because we all have different ways we interact with the world. We must see all our students. #BmoreEdchat
  • MsGuerrero2014 Dec 5 @ 9:22 PM EST
A1: SEL to looks different based on age and situation. In the classroom it begins with building relationships. I would always start the period with a handshake at the door. #BmoreEdChat
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3. Thinking about the history People of color have faced and access to services, it is clear that students who need the most support around SEL, may not have it. I am curious to hear others thoughts on this one. #BmoreEdChat.
    In reply to @bmoreedchat
  • socialeducator Dec 5 @ 9:23 PM EST
A2. They are all important, but I’m going to go with self awareness. Having a better understanding of self would impact the other areas. #BmoreEdchat
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:23 PM EST
what would be the biggest differences? Working in an elementary middle I have to flip my mindset every few minutes. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @darylhowardphd
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:24 PM EST
Thanks @Samuel_Karns! You hit the nail on the head! "Teaching kids and ADULTS". We should never think we are done learning about ourselves. #BMoreEdChat
    • Samuel_Karns Dec 5 @ 9:19 PM EST

hey Sofia! Thanks for joining #BmoreEdchat tonight!
    In reply to @MsGuerrero2014
  • MsGuerrero2014 Dec 5 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2: I believe relationship skills is the most important because it’s the one that helps you learn the others. You need to know how to empathize and communicate to truly understand others and word with others #BmoreEdChat
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:24 PM EST
We all have different frames of reference. We can’t assume our students understand norms around responsibility, relationships, or awareness like we do. #BMoreEdChat
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:25 PM EST
I love this question. Keep this in your mind for a few days and just keep unpacking the layers. #BmoreEdchat
  • missreed Dec 5 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: SEL is all about the intersectionality of what makes us whole! If we do not bring our full self to the process we lack the opportunity to heal and thrive in the spaces we find ourselves #BmoreEdChat
  • MsTuckerRocksPE Dec 5 @ 9:25 PM EST
Advocating for my content here while talking SEL at the same ..#physed & #healthed are the only contents I know that have personal/social responsibility/decision making built into their standards. Health & Phys Ed Ts have been doing SEL for yrs #BmoreEdchat

    FACTS!! #BMoreEdChat
    In reply to @Owl_b_TorresEdu
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:27 PM EST
Part of the inherent challenge with this idea is that we have the innate ability to bring our full selves. I think that is where our students are challenged. I can't bring my full self. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @missreed
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:27 PM EST
I agree. A lot to explore here. #BMoreEdChat
    In reply to @justincholbrook
  • Samuel_Karns Dec 5 @ 9:27 PM EST
It’s important to utilize the whole school whole community whole child framework through @ASCD & @CDC_DASH because it breaks everyone out of silos to bring this focus, we need everyone focusing on #SEL #BmoreEdChat

  • MsGuerrero2014 Dec 5 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3: SEL cant be a colorblind practice b/c every single Student that walks into our schools comes w/ diff. Experiences & from diff. Paths. We can’t use the same strategies to connect w/ each student & we must be able to teach them the same #BmoreEdChat
  • bmoreedchat - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:28 PM EST
Q4. How might educators analyze SEL competencies from a culturally responsive lens? #BmoreEdchat
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:28 PM EST
There are too many layers to this. Whew.... we may need to sit face to face for this.. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @justincholbrook
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:29 PM EST
Many human development models try to exclude race but shouldn’t. How one learns themselves and the world is influenced by many variables that make for pleasant and unpleasant experiences. #BMoreEdChat
    In reply to @bmoreedchat
  • missreed Dec 5 @ 9:29 PM EST
Truth! It is also an area that brings light to self perception. Why are students neglecting to change for gym? Many times there are issues behind this behavior that are beyond just being unwilling to change. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @MsTuckerRocksPE, @darylhowardphd, @EducatedAce, @justincholbrook
  • socialeducator Dec 5 @ 9:29 PM EST
A3. Just as we want our students to self aware, we must seek to understand them for who they are. It’s a disservice to not acknowledge all aspects of them. #BmoreEdchat
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:30 PM EST
I think race is just one piece of the models we refuse to believe in. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @darylhowardphd, @bmoreedchat
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:31 PM EST
They recognize the stories and experiences of the students, validate them, and help them move forward from that context. #BMoreEdChat
  • Owl_b_TorresEdu Dec 5 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4: We have to be aware of a multitude of perspectives and be respectful to the differences we'll see from families...if Ss feel that we are judging the way their mama does something we lose them quick...our job isn't to "fix" kids #BmoreEdchat
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:31 PM EST
This is an area where I struggle. But I know I struggle so that is the first step. And that is the first step. Before we can engage in teaching and modeling the practices of SEL with our Ss and Ts, we have to practice them on ourselves. We got to get intune with self #BmoreEdChat
    In reply to @bmoreedchat
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:32 PM EST
A4: Check your assumptions. When students and adults react and interact step back from your judgement. #BmoreEdchat
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:33 PM EST
Its because race isn't real, but the consequences associated with it are. #BMoreEdChat
    • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:30 PM EST

A3 ACE (adverse childhood experiences) impact #EveryChild & so we must be cognizant of our students & work on providing support systems to try and help our students & families @brewerhm is spot on when he said “we don’t just enroll kids we enroll families” #BmoreEdChat
  • raleshevich Dec 5 @ 9:34 PM EST
A3: most SEL models are focused on the students, but not the adults who interact with them. Educators own SEL competencies strongly influence students. Start with self 🙏 #BmoreEdchat
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:34 PM EST
I try teaching this to my students. To get them to have the self-awareness that everything is not always about them or their particular behavior. Adults are entitled to have not so good days just as much as you are but what we can all do is control our responses. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @justincholbrook

Q5. In what ways does SEL help to reduce the Achievement Gap? #BmoreEdchat
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:35 PM EST
I do the same thing. Being transparent and honest with your students should be encouraged in terms of your energy level or type of day. This creates a topic to build community because there is definitely one kid that feels the same way as you. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @EducatedAce
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:36 PM EST
... Thats a whole nother topic.. for a WHOLE nother day. We both now how race originated, its purpose, and its mission. We see how it has destroyed communities all across this country. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @darylhowardphd
  • Samuel_Karns Dec 5 @ 9:36 PM EST
A3 cont.. schools are not equipped to handle the caseload of students who are struggling & that has been a big challenge we are taking head on to help support the #SEL of our kids because their success depends on it! #BmoreEdChat
  • MsGuerrero2014 Dec 5 @ 9:37 PM EST
A4: I truly feel as though this can be the toughest thing to do b/c of the time & dedication that’s needed. Educators must 1st take the time to learn the diff. cultures Ss are a part of to then learn about how the SEL competencies combine w/ the classroom & culture #BmoreEdChat
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:37 PM EST
Culture drives so much of one’s identity. Educators must do some reflection of their own #SEL and address blind spots that could impact kids. #BMoreEdChat
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:37 PM EST
Absolutely! If I don't know where I am on the spectrum or continuum, how can I help someone else? #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @raleshevich
  • MsTuckerRocksPE Dec 5 @ 9:37 PM EST
Hey Rian! You're on it! Students are reluctant to change for Phys Ed (not gym:-) for a variety of reasons!! You're right about that point. Insecurity with self, not identifying with the gender options given for locker rooms. etc #BmoreEdChat

  • raleshevich Dec 5 @ 9:38 PM EST
A4: start with self, understand you are not them, share yourself, get to know them by inviting them to share with you, find connections, move forward, repeat. #BmoreEdchat
  • justincholbrook - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:38 PM EST
A5: Part of the achievement gap is student efficacy. So many students of color are constantly blasted with implicit messages that they struggle to find confidence and belief. SEL is the base to start building this efficacy for both students and staff. #BmoreEdchat
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:40 PM EST
Learning who you are helps one realize why its important to be a life long learner. Students at bottom of Achievement Gap often have less experience in positive reflection. It could change their entire trajectory. #BMoreEdChat
  • MsTuckerRocksPE Dec 5 @ 9:40 PM EST
Absolutely! Should be a focus for all. I think when we have to focus in on reading/ math, #SEL can get lost. I try to remember that if I/student can't self regulate trying to teach me academics or anything else for that matter will be a struggle. #BmoreEdChat

Another great question from @darylhowardphd tonight on #BmoreEdchat
  • Owl_b_TorresEdu Dec 5 @ 9:40 PM EST
"SEL has the ability to give at-risk students the tools they need to overcome obstacles and plug into their education for long-term achievement." This has such a lasting impact for life. #BmoreEdchat
    In reply to @justincholbrook
  • MsGuerrero2014 Dec 5 @ 9:41 PM EST
A5: Helping Ss w/ SEL leads to teaching real life positive characteristic skills which leads to Ss gaining ownership of their learning b/c they are more aware. This ownership can lead to having strong problem solving skills which then decreases their achievement gap #BmoreEdChat
  • EducatedAce Dec 5 @ 9:41 PM EST
... We have to make the curricula and instructional shifts that prioritize good SEL practices that can help students make progress. But with DENSE curriculum that don't allow for trips, or presentations, or celebrations... We are just talking a good game. #BmoreEdChat

  • bmoreedchat - Moderator Dec 5 @ 9:44 PM EST
Q6. How can/do you incorporate SEL in your role? #BmoreEdchat
  • MsTuckerRocksPE Dec 5 @ 9:44 PM EST
I think we need to focus PD's for admins/teachers on SEL as naturally part of curriculum, not something Ts see as one more thing to add to their full plate. SEL is already in #physed/#healthed curriculum so we teach it just like anything else #BmoreEDChat
    In reply to @justincholbrook, @darylhowardphd, @EducatedAce
  • darylhowardphd Dec 5 @ 9:44 PM EST
Agreed. Being a culturally responsive practitioner is hard work. So much to learn, think about, and be aware of (on top of curricular demands). The good thing is you don't have to master it, one just has to continually be in motion towards it. #BmoreEdchat

#BmoreEdChat A5 In ESOL world, learning flourishes when the affective filter is lowered. SEL is right there helping students understand how they are contributing to the community and how their emotional readiness allows them to grow academically.

Let me be clear...there should NEVER be a punishment for not changing. We assess students on skills not dress code. We can't assess/grade on anything not tied to a national #physed standard. This is #physed best practice. https://t.co/M7uksIc7NM #BmoreEdchat
    • missreed Dec 5 @ 9:40 PM EST
At the High School level, I find that the punishment for not changing are more severe when a conversation with the guidance counselor maybe more beneficial. Let’s get to the root of this.

As a counselor, this is my work all day, with every interaction. I want my students to know I care about who they are as students and where they are going as future citizens. #BMoreEdChat

A5. SEL develops communication skills - oral and written. Skills students need for academic success and life in general: on the job, building relationships, to advocate for themselves and others. This closes gaps #BmoreEdchat
  • MsTuckerRocksPE Dec 5 @ 9:52 PM EST
Then we need to make it so it exists in a core class because self-management, goal setting, empathy toward others are life skills not core content skills. These skills apply to everything we do in life, period. #BmoreEdChat

A6: As a specialist I don’t have my own classroom. My 1st step is making sure I memorize any Ss name that I work w/ & am sure I acknowledge them in the hall by name. Something as small as remembering a name gets me in the door to start building relationships #BmoreEdchat

A7. If we aren't reflecting on our own SEL, then how can we measure our own success? We have to be doers. #BmoreEdchat

In this work, we are continually growing and learning. We must accept students for their authentic selves. This requires us to be in a constant state of reflection. #BMoreEdChat

A6 As an administrator I am working after school once a week w/some of our boys who are not making responsible choices & self managing & am taking a team building approach through ropes, the hope is that this will begin to transpire in the classroom & at home #BmoreEDChat

A7: “You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself” reflecting on our own SEL is necessary for our own well being. We can’t help others unless we are in the right mindset which why it’s more than beneficial to reflect consistently #BmoreEdchat
