Q:1 How does Universal Design for Learning automatically create Culturally Responsive Classrooms.
Humor and laughter are a huge part of our social/learning experience. I also had several fun and funny Ts https://t.co/wc9Sa0c135
My favorite T had a a great sense of humor and laughed with us a lot.
Don't let fool you, he's a Twitter ninja.
So glad is in the house and I agree with that Davis is a Twitter Ninja.
A1: UDL is about recognizing our uniqueness and individuality. What could be more culturally responsive?
Relationships, Relationships, Relationships!
A1: it provides ALL students with the tools they need to become successful.
UDL is inclusive for all students not just the select groups.
UDL creates relationships. Being culturally responsive is starting with relationships. Openness for all. Access for all!
A:1 UDL is inclusive for all students not just the select groups.
A1: By expecting learner variability and planning for learners upfront by considering their needs
A1. Great Question! What does culturally responsive mean, or look like?
A1: When we front load the design of the learning exp to include all learners, to value their indv. and backgrnd it approaches auto
For me its about being intentional with the engagement principle
UDL does not teach to a normed-group of students. UDL makes sure the first teach is always the best.
A1: Learners feel accepted for who they are when needs are considered and used in planning.
A1: Student choice originates from student perspective and experience. It's not so much "responsive", it's culturally-BASED.
Glad you liked the first question
Good question: whose culture are we responding to? Need to be questioning hidden assumptions.
A1) because is grounded in recognition of diversity it not only accepts Ss previous culture but builds new ones.
Planning the environment is planning for all. Culturally responsive!
A1: respect for an individual that comes with choosing content process and product
There is at least one article published about cultural issues and UDL. I will send to Mindy to post.
That's a very helpful distinction for me - Thanks! https://t.co/H5vdAt28wS
A1: Student choice originates from student perspective and experience. It's not so much "responsive", it's culturally-BASED.
UDL does not label students.
It also recognizes that culture is fluid, dynamic. A classroom is a culture (hopefully of learning).
UDL reinforces reciprocal teaching and assessment capable learner practices, in place of ability grouping, tracking, and labeling.
learning a lot more about culture and responsive/nonresponsive in the Central California Valley https://t.co/JsGtnLo3Tm
Good question: whose culture are we responding to? Need to be questioning hidden assumptions.
Agreed and that ebb and flow is organic so the design of instruction and environment must mirror that
I like the way you stated that
Always comes down to respect, valuing - need to move past just tolerance/acceptance.
Denise are you ready to throw out number Q;2
allows students to showcase how they can learn & what they know = culturally responsive classrooms
So true and including being able to take risks! https://t.co/TuwjlMqrEr
It also recognizes that culture is fluid, dynamic. A classroom is a culture (hopefully of learning).
Too many curriculum options start with content & have to be adapted/modified for "fringe" students. UDL emphasizes start w/ Ss.
Need to get me some "improvement science" Where might I find this? https://t.co/qBuoAiLzJl
Have you all heard of "improvement science?" - it is new replacement for fidelity from Carnegie. but much more responsive to diversity
A1: As Ts become more intentional & self-reflective they can discover their own biases ...allows them to design great environments
Have you all heard of 'improvement science?" New from Carnegie - replaces "fidelity of implementation" with real responsiveness.
Would love to learn more about that. Just from the term, I like it already.
is contextual to both the designer and environment. Culture is contextual. Ss have an established culture we must see
Q2: Why is it so important to build the capacity of all teachers?
Add this to the list of because of tonight's . Love having my thinking pushed. https://t.co/4A7YqeEYsA
Have you all heard of 'improvement science?" New from Carnegie - replaces "fidelity of implementation" with real responsiveness.
Variability is an "afterthought" in the margins of the teacher manual...so disheartening! https://t.co/3HlEPGoOKm
Too many curriculum options start with content & have to be adapted/modified for "fringe" students. UDL emphasizes start w/ Ss.
Ongoing reflection needs to be part of a teachers practice: for whom and on who's behalf am I working?
one year with a poor teacher increases the gap
There is a lot of learning going on tonight and we are all so lucky to have on with us tonight for the
YES! Variability is an opportunity, not a barrier! https://t.co/FyL3dSlWBE

Too many curriculum options start with content & have to be adapted/modified for "fringe" students. UDL emphasizes start w/ Ss.
Because they should be modeling learning - be the lead learner! I'm learning so much tonight!
A great resource for UDL cultural responsiveness is she has done some great PD for BCSC
Like the distinction between valuing and tolerance. Valuing implies you have adjusted your own perspective
A2) capacity builds collegial culture and frames conversations. Helps build a tribe of learning
Thank you for making it tonight
Any articles or resources to share? https://t.co/uhzwWlj4MS
Have you all heard of 'improvement science?" New from Carnegie - replaces "fidelity of implementation" with real responsiveness.
A:2 To really "do" UDL in a school environment, the culture needs to live and breath UDL. Teachers need to benefit as learners too!
A2: We need to empower all of our teachers to provide the best tier 1 instruction and embrace learner variability
A2: Pockets of mean Ss go from thrive to dive. We need all Ts Pro-actively honoring the diverse learners in our classrooms.
Claps loudly! https://t.co/085OvzceSX
A:2 To really "do" UDL in a school environment, the culture needs to live and breath UDL. Teachers need to benefit as learners too!
Is a terrific resource. I use her as a resource with pre service teachers https://t.co/fwCTcoRFxm
A great resource for UDL cultural responsiveness is she has done some great PD for BCSC
I love the way you stated that "building a tribe of teachers"
A:2 True collaboration builds knowledge and understanding.
Are we making teacher learning UDL and culturally based/responsive? is making sure it is!
It also makes both sides better. A true partnership.
We are so fortunate has entered the tonight with us. Hi Grace!!!
To really build teacher capacity, Ts need to support each other, have difficult conversations, check their egos at the door..
A2: 2 heads are better than 1! Collaboration is important.
did just drop in from the shadows of ? Knowledge bombs dropping’ everywhere. Twitter may shut down
Here comes question number 3.
We need to not only build ,but sustain our learning and build that culture that supports UDL
Yes! Collaboration builds momentum and stamina for the good work of https://t.co/wKraPNK3Ji
A2: 2 heads are better than 1! Collaboration is important.
School districts and administration should provide professional development in a UDL way.
A2: Ts need to see strengths & experiences Ss bring to a lrng environment - not a fixed expectation of what Ss should have.
Q:3 How does UDL support Co-Planning to Co-Serve all students?
Thanks! I’m a huge believer in Ts as shamans that help care for the health of their tribes/clsses.
A2: Teachers can have great impact on student achievement when they are seen to be "lead learners", modeling learning new things.
has a poll for you guys on ! Please answer and retweet :) https://t.co/0kKoiMZiuK
Let's try this: Do you know about the ''. From where? RT liberally.
that's how we develop and deliver our PD in our region. UDL is the only way togo
teachers can have huge impact on students when students are seen as co-planners
A3: is predicated on intentionality and forethought rather than reactivity. Unfair to always retrofit lessons to reach all.
A3: the tenants of UDL force a collaborative discussion, based on data, in the planning phase
Where oh where is our for this question?
A:3 Co-Planning can and should look different for participants. Variety is the spice of UDL
A3: UDL encourages asking "How do you approach this?" rather than mandating & homogenizing strategies.
A3: if you are co-planning using UDL, then you are teaching the margins and reaching all learners and providing options for all
A:3 What better way to learn from each other, pull from each other’s tool box and have a in house.
I think Elizabeth Stein's book on collaborative UDL is almost out!!!!
A3: UDL helps Ss with T variability when co-teaching happens. Ownership of learning is shared by all!
Hi, ! Perfect timing--just skidding in with now! :)
A2:We've sent the message for too long that only certain Ts can reach some Ss. Lots of work to change mindset
which then builds a culturally responsive class https://t.co/iEBu5zKOAo
teachers can have huge impact on students when students are seen as co-planners
YEAH has arrived just in time for this one
Oops...I meant co-planning
Boom! https://t.co/mJVzZzNo3r
A2:We've sent the message for too long that only certain Ts can reach some Ss. Lots of work to change mindset
Thanks for reminding me of the student in the co-planning process https://t.co/ptx00X7hka
teachers can have huge impact on students when students are seen as co-planners
A3) is so fundamentally grounded in Design Thinking and prototyping loops that co planning must remain dynamic
A:3 with co-planning you get direct insight into someone else's variability, which means knowing more about Ss variability
Hey Ron, I'm lurking at tonight. Still finishing my HW and my bedtime is coming up soon. Lots of new tweets to follow!
A3: Co-planning is what facilitates capacity building on teacher teams...shared collective expertise to meet ALL learners!
A3: perfect for tapping into expertise of BOTH teachers while keeping instruction Ss centered--it's a win-win-win!
no worries. I’ll archive and make sure you get a finished copy of the Thanks so much for lurking.
A3:co-planning brings two perspectives on how to solve the same problem. Better chances of the solution/ideas being centered on Ss
Looks like 1 minute left for the
Great way to help build capacity of other https://t.co/8gssKFdCpr
A3:co-planning brings two perspectives on how to solve the same problem. Better chances of the solution/ideas being centered on Ss
Love it! is really at the heart of a healthy learning relationship for all involved. https://t.co/kLf3bYrepO
A3: perfect for tapping into expertise of BOTH teachers while keeping instruction Ss centered--it's a win-win-win!
Love the Equity Audit! Great resources from Time spent with and crew at Harvard transformed my teaching.
and swoops in for the finisher! NICE!
A3: co-planning+collaboration=student success!!
A:3 Don't forget to harness the power of digital tools for co-planning
co-planning allows for choice and voice which reaches the UDL principle and culturally responsive class
A3: Learning is 3 dimensional. Co-planning helps Ts see all angles of Ss lrng. Builds a richer environment for Ss
I would like to thank my wonderful co-moderator tonight. Denise you did a wonderful job and thank you.
