Q1) What is the most pressing issue for you as an educator? Budget, T Shortage, RIF, class size, Standards, pay, or something else?
Drew price - instructional coach: Putnam city schools
Kenny Stringer, Principal Clinton High
Teacher Shortage. Without teacher not much else matters
Shanna Mellott, Senior English, Cache, 9 weeks until my son's graduation, 5 weeks until senior speeches start, & 4 weeks until EOI.
Looking forward to tonight's chat! Need that weekly motivation that provides. :)
Mindy Dennison, Carl Albert HS
A1: The dominant attitude by a few key legislative leaders. The rest are symptoms. https://t.co/le5cBUwgS9
Q1) What is the most pressing issue for you as an educator? Budget, T Shortage, RIF, class size, Standards, pay, or something else?
GoGuardian here! Just some folks trying to change the world. Excited to learn with everyone tonight at https://t.co/908bqPUMrS
Kristin Atchley, Student Advocacy Coordinator Norman High
A1 My son is upset this was only Spring break and not summer break.I need to find time to fit everything in yet this year.
A1: As an ed, I am concerned w/ equity in mastery of standards. How do we make sure ALL Ss are learning in depth and at high rigor.
A1 -- T Shortage for . For this Granny, it's -- 3rd gr. Grand.
Andrea Gaines, Union HS Science
Julie Bloss, Principal- Grove ECC
A1. And then there are that need to be passed so I can work on next year.
Not that your are counting down or anything…
Crystal Szymanski, Chisholm MS Principal
A1) #1 issue is budget! Can't resolve t shortage (which is #1 instructional problem), operations, class size, etc. Budget is bad
A1 I think the teacher shortage and teacher pay are the issues that affect me the most.
My personal most pressing issue as an 3rd grade teacher is the HST my 8 & 9 year olds will take in 22 days. https://t.co/jNB74UOeTS
Q1) What is the most pressing issue for you as an educator? Budget, T Shortage, RIF, class size, Standards, pay, or something else?
A1: T shortage is #1 concern for me. Lack of budget will increase class size. W/out enuf T's prob is worse https://t.co/k7e4k36mAo
Q1) What is the most pressing issue for you as an educator? Budget, T Shortage, RIF, class size, Standards, pay, or something else?
A1- my coworkers losing their jobs and my students losing the support they need (teachers and counselor)
A1: The $$, the standards, the statutes - all negotiable. The attitude of legi leadership is toxic.
Clay McDonald. Asst Prin Piedmont HS.
A1) there is way too much uncertainty!
A1. Budget is the #1 issue. Without proper funding, we can't pay Ts, teach standards, etc.
by far, pay. I am seriously thinking I may have to leave OK bc I just can't get by
A1: as a T, the budget; as a parent, the teacher shortage. https://t.co/RsKvXW12oU
Q1) What is the most pressing issue for you as an educator? Budget, T Shortage, RIF, class size, Standards, pay, or something else?
A1 most immediate is funding concerns, most important is a lack of respect for the profession--other issues tie to lack of respect
Lori Wathen, parent (Robin Hill School) and engaged supporter of pubic education
Anne Beck, Ed tech. Looking forward to joining when I can tonight!
A1: My student's learning. Which could be hindered by larger class sizes, and the delay with the standards. Learning is top w/me.
A1 I'm most concerned about the uncertainty of the future of public ed. Will we fight this again and again?
A1) Encouraging my students - future Ts - that is a great place for them. Roughly half plan on leaving for other states...
Never knew the solution to teacher shortage was cut us so much we could not hire the teacher is $$ was Available
Exactly! https://t.co/0bg7Yns1sr
A1: My student's learning. Which could be hindered by larger class sizes, and the delay with the standards. Learning is top w/me.
Jennifer Williams, HS ELA
A1: BUDGET! followed closely by RESPECT.
A1) Budget! Fund our schools. I'd love a raise, but I prefer we take care of our patrons first.
A1: teacher pay will be a chief issue until it’s addressed - that and funding are the biggest issues to me
Teacher shortage. Very few applicants and students not choosing to go into education.
A1: Budget - it affects everything else. More $ could hire more Ts and get updated texts and such.
A1: Budget! As a choir teacher, my students are having to carry the load with fundraising so we can have all the things we need.
A1 personally for me it's class size. Hurts my Ss & will determine what my team will look like next year.
teacher respect a by product of fixing teacher shortabe
A1 nothing happens with the budget crisis. That must change before anything else can!
A1: personally T pay (as I have to live and eat) but collectively T shortage... We need ppl good ppl https://t.co/mhPCsavY27
Q1) What is the most pressing issue for you as an educator? Budget, T Shortage, RIF, class size, Standards, pay, or something else?
A1: Raise is last priority. Teachers have the tendency of putting their students needs b4 their own. Contrary to what some think.
A1) calming the fears of teachers on temporary contracts and elective teachers https://t.co/YloU2jKpAC
Q1) What is the most pressing issue for you as an educator? Budget, T Shortage, RIF, class size, Standards, pay, or something else?
A1 The budget. Suddenly, everything else - including the T shortage - is a distant second.
A1- as a parent, funding, T shortage and standards.
This is it! So early in the chat - a top 5 finisher for tweet of the night! https://t.co/pgaiCNhFPD
A1: My student's learning. Which could be hindered by larger class sizes, and the delay with the standards. Learning is top w/me.
a1) Leaders that see us and public ed as unimportant. All the rest would be solved if we had the right leadership.
A1) The budget (shortfall) affects in many ways
A1) My biggest concern is a combo of the budget and the teacher shortage.
A1) Funding/class size. We haven't had an art T in 5 years so my Humanities classes went from avg. 8 to about 25.
A1: Most of me says T pay because we can’t pay the good ones enough to stick around. we have too many blah T who make Ed look sad.
a1) overall attitude towards teachers and earning a living wage. all things stem from that.
A1 budget & teacher shortage = large class sizes :(
Tardy to the party: Vanessa Perez, Tech Integration Specialist, Clinton
A1) With everything else going on, pay has found its way down on my list. Funding, T shortage, standards, SB 1187 all weigh on me
Tony Sappington, BA... A1- The overall climate of education in our state. Many changes needed to change the climate.
https://t.co/YH3XYSZAjK
a1) overall attitude towards teachers and earning a living wage. all things stem from that.
I think it will be amazing the difference between our issues as a person and our issues as a profession
A1: BUDGET but teacher shortage is a close second. paying the bills to keep school running and not short changing students
A1: Every issue is related. Budget cuts=low pay=teacher shortage=4 day school week=what standards will be used. Nothing resolved.
A1: my personal biggest concern is the ideology & platform agendas that regularly take our professional time & influence our psyche
So much could be improved if politicians would stop the teacher bashing.
A1) Budget, , and teacher shortage are all priority issues. Number 1 issue is the lack of support by some in OKC.
A1: I'm worried most about 's ability to lessen the impact of budget shortfall on Ts and Ss. Ss only get to attend school once.
A2 The feeling that is in a state of chaos.
A2 The feeling that is in a state of chaos.
A2 The feeling that is in a state of chaos.

I'm going with "All of the above." 🙄 https://t.co/6Oy3ZNzOxs
Q1) What is the most pressing issue for you as an educator? Budget, T Shortage, RIF, class size, Standards, pay, or something else?
Nancy Copeland,principal@Idabel Central
Teacher shortage, PD and pay.
A1: the budget: investing in could fix a lot of the other problems.
A1- teacher morale/teacher shortage
It’s my desire to see teachers viewed more positively - almost more so than pay right now.
How true. I'm lucky to have reasonable class sizes, but the budget could change that. https://t.co/PR7kIlCeL6
I think it will be amazing the difference between our issues as a person and our issues as a profession
Really if respect was addressed in general, it would change how people view - its teachers, students, and true needs.
A1 Public perception of teaching profession - it informs pay, budget, shortage, legislation
A1) Teacher pay. Wages stay same while prices of everything else rises.
in order to correct the teacher shortage problem we must address all other issues
I don't think they were used them fighting back.. bullies don't generally choose those that do.
Tasha Jefferson, first grade, Clinton
Please tell your legislator to vote NO on HJR 1070, HJR 1071, SJR 75,SB1187. Standards written by Oklahomans.
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
If the attitude changed, everything else needed would follow. https://t.co/V7yKMXgRZ8
Really if respect was addressed in general, it would change how people view - its teachers, students, and true needs.
A2: How do we keep quality Ts in classrooms? How do we lift the burdens our Ts feel, so they can focus on S mastery of standards.
every decision from the capitol w/ a negative impact on adds to the T shortage https://t.co/xvS4oG1Opw
in order to correct the teacher shortage problem we must address all other issues
Or fighting for our kids...They are our charge.
Really poignant discussion tonight about the state of .
A1) as a parent I am worried about the standards delay and funding. 35 in a class won't work for me.
A2: The Elections this year. Ts are notoriously under-involved, and it stifles our influence. https://t.co/DyWCtJEqc1
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
A2 I was going to say budget, but you all are right. It's the general lack of respect for Ts that's at the core of the problem!
A#1 testing requirements don't allow enough time for creative problem solving, such as STEM. I teach math; need creative teaching
Jayden Mills, Chickasha Junior, future educator, boat-rocker, and lover of ice cream 😃 How is everyone tonight?
A1 I just can't wrap my head around why our profession is so degraded by certain officials...makes no sense to me?
A1 The reality as the leader I will have 2 sit face 2 face with someone that I care about n tell them they don't have a job nxt year
Exactly! all problems associated with current climate of https://t.co/oBmFJMu1bu
A2: How do we keep quality Ts in classrooms? How do we lift the burdens our Ts feel, so they can focus on S mastery of standards.
Broke record . To fix we have to address theother issues like budget testing teacher pay morale respect etc
A2-Respect. I went to college, I worked hard to hone my craft. I'm a professional and I deserve to be treated as such.
A2: Keeping it real - making sure Ts use our new standards in a rigorous fashion so our Ss succeed after graduation.
A2: Public Ed needs to become a priority again. I feel like we are getting scraps thrown at us. I treat my dog better.
A2 teacher shortage! Our kids need rock star teachers!
A2: If we make an impact in June, August, November, other issues will move right direction. If not... https://t.co/DyWCtJEqc1
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
The most pressing issue for is the budget crisis. https://t.co/9qirV4nwhp
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
What Blue said - Teachers - GET INVOLVED! SPREAD THE WORD TO THOSE NOT ON - WE NEED THEM ALL! https://t.co/7LJpxC1KEu
A2: The Elections this year. Ts are notoriously under-involved, and it stifles our influence. https://t.co/DyWCtJEqc1
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
Everything is woven together...we can begin unravelling threads & address... https://t.co/e4FrTt0v0O
in order to correct the teacher shortage problem we must address all other issues
Former educator/public school parent and advocate. Sorry I'm late.
A1) Teacher Shortage. Special Education teachers very hard to find. Shortage is becoming critical.
and stop thinking they know more than us
A2 Public Perception and Teacher moral. Over-stressed Ts do not create positive learning environments. https://t.co/5I0IsijZG5
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
A1)budget which she ultimately affects everything and at the top of that list - class size
call me paranoid, but it's easier to manipulate an uneducated population...
It all circles back to the students. Can't wait to see them doing awesome things tomorrow! https://t.co/YbXrAQ8nWQ
A1: I'm worried most about 's ability to lessen the impact of budget shortfall on Ts and Ss. Ss only get to attend school once.
A2: Encouraging Ts in classrooms & encouraging potential Ts to go into https://t.co/cyRm7yu0xU
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
A2) Have to continue to Press On! a few legislators think we will tire. We must keep being loud and bringing quality solutions
A2- respect for our profession. If the leaders of our state do not respect us and our business of school, we will get nowhere
A2 I've said for years that it's a toss up between money and respect. Not enough of either coming to https://t.co/bYPUIU9TXq
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
35,000 kids with a untrained teacher each and every day is an emergency
A2) The lack of concern for public education.
A2) Consistent, dependable revenue sources and consistent, dependable support for public ed
A2: Every one on this chat tonight should ask to talk at next facutly meeting to encourage involvement. Ask tomorrow.
A2) Being an election year- getting the right people in office may be our only way out of this mess. https://t.co/iwF5RyPZqW
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
Everything we must do to make the classroom better takes money we won't get.
A2) our biggest issue is that special interest groups are driving education legislation. Not the kids, parents and experts.
yes!!! All of the issues we have stem from the fact that our profession is not respected.
A2: It seems like the most pressing issue is our standards just read the feed from the past few days...
A2 changing public perception of and Ts. I'm worried this is only the beginning, unless we can convince ppl we're the good guys!
IMO, your respect comes with the value other people place on you - society doesn't value Ts very much https://t.co/eTLl5GPUfu
A2 I've said for years that it's a toss up between money and respect. Not enough of either coming to https://t.co/bYPUIU9TXq
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
A2 properly funding public education is the most pressing issue. It affects everything. That and pro public ed legislation.
A2 -- we must continue to find the energy to advocate for our students...even when we're fatigued. Keep the focus on kids.
A2: The budget is the most pressing issue. Cut the budget=closing schools. The last five years has been about tearing down schools.
an emergency and tragedy. ’tWriteThis
A2) Funding. Without it, T's aren't hired or they're let go, schools shorten weeks or they close completely.
And if you're not a teacher at an school? Then what? What can people on the outside looking in do?
A2: I'll take a big picture view here. Lack of student engagement, esp in upper grades must be addressed. Effects of poverty too.
A2: If on twitter, they're already engaged. We NEED those who aren't, and who aren't registered to vote, and who don't like poltics.
but it's worse here than anywhere else. Why is OK govt so careless about importance of education?
A2: most pressing issue is budget & electing legs that will make a priority. Phrase "How low can we go?" hits home.
A2: most pressing issue is budget & electing legs that will make a priority. Phrase "How low can we go?" hits home.
- Hi all! Hope everyone had a good spring break. 😀Jumping into tonight's chat a little late.
So much of this. Yes! https://t.co/mzfzMrrt9h
A1: my personal biggest concern is the ideology & platform agendas that regularly take our professional time & influence our psyche
A2: the state of education is always in turmoil in OK. It's exhausting
A2: helping change the conversation about education by changing some of the people having the conversation at the capitol.
And educate our students & their families to advocate for themselves! https://t.co/vAmao4CSHE
A2 -- we must continue to find the energy to advocate for our students...even when we're fatigued. Keep the focus on kids.
A2) Frankly, or elected officials need to quit bashing, listen to Ts and come up with a solution instead of being puppets for ALEC
A2- funding and legislative support for public schools
Always happy to see you here, Joy!
A2) ESAs. I'm scared families will start supporting ESAs because Common Ed is funded so poorly.
If you're in state, talk to neighbors. Go door-to-door for pro-ed candidates. Volunteer for them. https://t.co/YlEgKwSPex
And if you're not a teacher at an school? Then what? What can people on the outside looking in do?
A2 We need to change the focus that public schools are the answers to our problems and not the causes of problems.
I agree. I grad in2017. I love where I'm at but do I stay. Is grass greener on other side?
A2) moral. Starts at the top. I hear more teachers say "I'm just tired" more than ever.
you may be paranoid, but that doesn't mean you're wrong. :(
Q2: we are a state divided by ideology & resources. Sensing others r controlling our profession we retreat. New T must stay strong
A2 Hard to separate the issues. All are woven into the fabric of . Pull one thread & it all unravels.
And we need to make sure we're talking to those OUTSIDE , explaining the situation. Using our teacher voice
Some things that our local & national politicians say make the hair stand up on the back of my neck!
I'm in late too, but glad to be here.
A2b: If we don't hurry up, our biggest issue will be funding our newest "adult" citizens who can't keep a job or get a degree!
A2: The most pressing issue moving forward is that educators continue to advocate and place a voice in every process.
for me personally, it is the budget - for it has to be about the Tshortage
makes me sad 2 think of the things we could do in ed if more of our gov official would collaborate & listen https://t.co/GP6hiKBrhH
So much could be improved if politicians would stop the teacher bashing.
bring a friend to vote day!
Chad Austin from Idabel Schools joining the discussion.
A2: Most Okies are decent people who want the right thing. We just need to woo them, b/c the evil people are louder and slicker.
This was our question. Not in OK, just in bc we <3 teachers, and education.
Welcome back, Jayden. You might find us a bit ruffled tonight! https://t.co/r4JTJIJ7R1
Jayden Mills, Chickasha Junior, future educator, boat-rocker, and lover of ice cream 😃 How is everyone tonight?
A2 -- another issue is encouraging/shaming teachers into voting...and voting .
Do things differently here? Outside the box thinking? Set up school like its not the 1880’s?
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
So we need a better marketing campaign?
Okies wrote them, Okies want them! Vote NO on HJR 1070 & 1071, SJR 75, and SB1187
Bring a friend to ! Let them see their voice matters!
A2: One pressing issue is our state's over-reliance on standardized tests. I hope we move to the ACT.
A little late, but here. Bartlesville, 6th English :).
A2: finding ways to make it obvious to public and leggies that investing in schools is beneficial to EVERYONE!
Honestly? Yes. How do you get others outside of to hear this, see this, and fight for this?
A2 - state budget and teacher shortage.
https://t.co/EXZYWiedvC
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
Standards are what I use to guide instruction all year long. Assessment is 1 day a year. https://t.co/WXcDAthLkQ
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
Sorry - you hit a current hot spot of mine!
glad to have you! you never stop advocating! It's inspiring!!
We have to get the involve message outside of the tribe - we have all seen it.
A3: Standards! If I teach to the standards, I'm not concerned about the assessments because my Ss are prepared!
get voter registration forms!
A2 Putting Legislators in office that support Public Education. has to vote as 1.
April Aston Clinton, 4th Grade T
A3: Standards are more important. Assessments come after standards are in place. https://t.co/260bIXZUbE
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
Involvement of voters/respect of T's; how do we get people to vote edu. & create pro- environment in ? https://t.co/r6DpD3T6hl
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
A3a: I use assessments every single day. If it sounds bad, my kids don't get it. So I go back and fix.
A2) Control. It doesn't matter if we have a gazillion dollars as long as the wrong people are deciding how it is spent.
A3: are most important to me.
A3. for me it the Assessment piece -Standards are learning goals defined by grade- test determine whether those goals are met!
Who has a better response for this? I choked - which isn't my normal suave.
Yes! This. https://t.co/cqD957gR7o
A3: Standards! If I teach to the standards, I'm not concerned about the assessments because my Ss are prepared!
A3: How can you get to the assessment if you never had a map to begin your journey? Standards are my road map. I decide the path.
I see T's always teaching to test cause overwhelmed. How do we fix that part of teaching
Q3: Separate the two. There is simply no effective method to assess a years' worth of stnds with one MC test. Teach kids to think!
Chad Austin from Idabel Schools joining chat.
A3 - Standards are much more important to me. They are our foundation.
A3: Standards. It is about Ss mastery of standards. If Ss master standards they will do well on assessments. https://t.co/7Qp1nh9d4R
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
A3: That's a loaded Q when so many differ on defining those lately
BTW - Amy Presley w/ Broken Arrow joining https://t.co/trJT4CKI9Q
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
A3: Standards are needed as a teaching guide however assessments are needed to show progress/growth
you are so right - its hard to focus during the springtime…you never know what may suddenly appear.
A2 Create positively, community, find ways to work together for the good of all children...starting 2 doubt it can happen
A2)Funding it is the point from which all else flows for our schools
to me, teaching to the test is not a bad thing, it means we are teaching toward our objectives & measuring our success
A3) Standards. Teachers already do a great job of assessing our students.
I cannot understand the disrespect, blatant disrespect. Need to see what I see in our schools. Amazing work! https://t.co/5DKsA3Efv9
A3) I don't think I can pick one over the other. Assessments should drive standards based instruction
Q3: great question, but from my vantage point the assessment will trump the standards: especially if there are high stakes involved
A3b: Personally Standards. Assessment is just smoke and mirrors without standards
and I definitely don't see things changing at the national level.
A3 Assessments are currently highest, though it may only impact future grads. Standards will eventually pass.
Standards! Teach from them with creativity to hook your Ss. assessments are once a year... Show me "A-ha!" https://t.co/SdhiLiKuHc
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
I hate the word assess, because it makes me think of test, which makes me think of bubble sheets. Which makes me ill.
https://t.co/zK7Zc3wrj9
A3: How can you get to the assessment if you never had a map to begin your journey? Standards are my road map. I decide the path.
Consider our audience... The American public has an incredible short attention span... Myself included!
well said.. https://t.co/lGan2hwKVN
A3: How can you get to the assessment if you never had a map to begin your journey? Standards are my road map. I decide the path.
This is a the struggle for right here—>>> https://t.co/2p8PVInvnn
I agree. I grad in2017. I love where I'm at but do I stay. Is grass greener on other side?
A3: standards and FORMATIVEassessments go hand-in-hand. Need to know where your going and if you got there.
We teach the standards @ mastery level, then proficiency of assessments will come.
A3 Build a foundation with the standards. Then assess for T edification. Get rid of HST.
Placing education where it belongs in priority list... Because until we are seen as necessary ppl won't care https://t.co/oK23HBQWNs
Q2) What is the most pressing issue for as we move forward? Why is this a problem for education?
Invitation and shout out to to join the chat right now!
A3- standards!! Tell me what you want me to teach and I will do it! I can assess my Ss so many ways to see that they are learning it
A3: Standards, I guess. Good for Ts to have a guide to follow, especially new Ts. As long as the standards don't stifle creativity.
A3b: I love the standards for Music Education. They are a great starting point. And the Kodaly scope is great!
Assessment for learning, standards for the target https://t.co/YW6MixRvCh
Q3: Separate the two. There is simply no effective method to assess a years' worth of stnds with one MC test. Teach kids to think!
A1: halting privatization (vouchers and charters) no question
A3 Standards - assessments can come in many forms, measuring the same standard https://t.co/753iFhybUR
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
A3 What you teach and how you teach is always the most important thing. Those that evaluate can often only look at the assessment.
A3: Standards and assessments both have their place in the classroom. You need blueprints & a building inspector.
Welcome to the chat! #rockstar#swelemT
A3) Standards. The assessments should address the standards.
A3: They're there, like bread for a sandwich, but neither are the meat, mayo, or fixin's. https://t.co/SZGMvKjQCR
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
Ts must present themselves as professionals. I don't see many lawyers in shirts and jeans on a work day.
A3) I think it's a balance. I have to have quality formative assessments to determine if I'm teaching standards appropriately
A3: Assessment can take many shapes and forms. I love being able to be creative with them.
A3 -- Standards are the roadmap...assessment is did you end up where you thought you'd be...both impt.
A3: Standards are the most important because the needs of the students come first. Assessments are all about a test score.
A3: Assessment, but only when it is meaningful and used to promote growth
It's far too easy to assess the wrong thing. Standards help define the learning path & keep us on the right journey.
A3 Two edges of the same sword.. Assessment of the assessments makes the most sense to me! Not looking forward to testing season!
A3b: Mastery of a subject CANNOT be measured with a standard MC test. It's only one piece, and not the most important.
The standards are assessed in so both are equal in importance. My favorite to teach are life lessons. https://t.co/bdO2nmjh2J
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
A3: I "assess" every single day I teach. Standards are nice for the unifying aspect. I aim beyond them though. Always have.
A3) We need consistent standards. Assessing is part of teaching and learning, but we need guidelines in order to create curriculum.
This!! https://t.co/pvOp2vW7zV
Q3: Separate the two. There is simply no effective method to assess a years' worth of stnds with one MC test. Teach kids to think!
A3) as a parent, the Teacher's assessment is the most important to me not a test!
I've been watching your FB group rapidly growing this week. Impressive of engaged parents, educators, stakeholders!
like I told my teachers, if we don't let the public & Legis know about ,who will? What will they say?
A3 Standards are our guide, they are vital to classroom goals and direction.
A3: I'd rather not be TOO honest about how deeply I care about either most days...
a3: Both seem connected... T-created formative assessments > HS testing. Standards help provide direction for Assess. process
Okay, put shouldn't the assessment measure the instructional objectives?
A3 without standards per grade level Ts would not be on the same page per grade level
Standards. They are part of an effective toolbox. Trust effective T's w/ tools & success will occur. https://t.co/WqAYA3OMsB
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
That would depend on the type of practice and whether clients are coming in. :)
Standards are like I-beams in a building-provide structure. But the aesthetics and shape are up to the T https://t.co/bF7NZAxgN6
A3: Standards, I guess. Good for Ts to have a guide to follow, especially new Ts. As long as the standards don't stifle creativity.
A3) Assessments. I can work with any set of standards given to me (like them or not), I have the last 15 yrs.
Glad you are joining tonight
Standards vs Assessments questions are a lot like the "Chicken vs the Egg" debate
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
and you won't see me dressed that way unless it's a game day--then it's a Jaguars Tshirt.
I’m close to stepping to the podium. But I’ll begin with a cliche, heart-warming story, pull on the heart strings.
I'm really liking all the metaphors is using to describe Standards & Assessment. Y'all are so smart!
They're more like the "Nickelback or Rhianna" debate... https://t.co/kRDuRrhdHK
Standards vs Assessments questions are a lot like the "Chicken vs the Egg" debate
seriously love that analogy. Planned one writing a blogpost around that same idea.
does it matter if we don't have qualified tchrs who apply the standards and use assessment to improve their teaching
A4: Legis ask me to do more w/less the past 8 years; I expect the same of them.
Great athletic teams repeat the same stuff for their test - game day. Lots of practice here.
Are you listening? Standards lead the way. https://t.co/AIERCQL8BQ
A3: Standards! If I teach to the standards, I'm not concerned about the assessments because my Ss are prepared!
I love OK. Born and raised here. But I also have a family to consider as well. Weighing options.
As an S, Knowing the stndrds(goal) is key- I feel a certain degree of assessment w/i classroom (observation) https://t.co/Ki8qUHHCMs
Q3) Standards or Assessments: Which is more important to you as an T? Why?
A4: Rescind tax credits and tax corporations fairly. Get the maj of taxes off the middle class. https://t.co/vHyf4OghEr
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
A4: Well...for starters do we really need a reflection pool at the capital?
Only their money is greener. Our students and our teachers can't be beat! https://t.co/gRoLFvTQNq
I agree. I grad in2017. I love where I'm at but do I stay. Is grass greener on other side?
A4: 87% of my district's budget is personnel. Only way to survive cuts is with fewer people, larger class sizes, fewer electives.
shoot. just needs consistency in general.
A4: Find legis who consistently vote the same and fire all but one. Give remaining legi their voting power. https://t.co/hnLYi5Zkqk
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
...like a broken record I repeat: Stop tax cut and tax credits. Will help SOME.
...like a broken record I repeat: Stop tax cut and tax credits. Will help SOME.
A4: Definitely kick 110,000 Oklahomans off Medicaid. https://t.co/iVLAxSzo2V
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
A4: I don't have a solution for the budget crisis, and apparently neither does anyone else.
Awesome, I'd love to read it! I think Standards are necessary, but Assessments are too-a final walk through for the bldg
That decision does not need to be made right away.. but staying aware and engaged is important now.
Thx it's amazing to see so many people this passionate about public Ed. Strong leaders inspire this https://t.co/3OebPuqLT9
I've been watching your FB group rapidly growing this week. Impressive of engaged parents, educators, stakeholders!
A3- From a parents perspective, probably assessments bc that's where we see the anxiety, frustration
That would be awesome but I don't see much of that at all I bounce btwn 3 schoose
A4 Redefine the term "flat budget" in the Oklahoma Academic Standards https://t.co/dCZTuFCLqh
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
A3)standards they are essential to what T's use to guide instruction and align vertically and horizontally
Formative assessments = lifeblood of teaching.
A4 Follow the influence of other states, reverse tax cuts. The cut taxes to increase revenue idea isn't working very well.
a4) Anyone think that our overpaid legislature needs a 18% pay cut?
That depends. Can we dedicate the revenue from the pennies thrown in to ? https://t.co/BDwUloLyyW
A4: Well...for starters do we really need a reflection pool at the capital?
A4: Identify 3 best fiscal years of past decade. Average the tax rates of those 3 years. Lock that in.
Yes! I've gotten educational whiplash the last 5-6 years.
but if the team doesn't win does it mean that they didn't practice hard & build character?
statistics like that make me worried about my position in my district... sigh!
Interesting Flashpoint this morning on -Wind Energy gets $242M a yr in tax $ - Gross Production tax cut to 2% doesn't help
A4) at some point we are going to have to put politics and Rs and Ds to bed be adults and come up with a solution for the problem
how can they look us in the eye if they aren't making person sacrifices/cuts too?
A4; I have suggestions though... Why not find a state that is doing it right, or another country, and copy their ideas.
A4: An unpopular 1 - increase class sizes, add a T asst, & keep R amazing Ts leading quality learning. https://t.co/51UqT0Qy6X
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
This! This one! https://t.co/5Gfvotracr
A4) at some point we are going to have to put politics and Rs and Ds to bed be adults and come up with a solution for the problem
Yes; but a reflection pool that allows lawmakers to reflect on their poor decision-making in regards to 🙄🤔 https://t.co/WPIZFRM2Qu
A4: Well...for starters do we really need a reflection pool at the capital?
A4: I'd like to see where our tax dollars actually go. As in a state-wide audit. And up the % of the lotto $$
Goog point - but there is lots of practice on the way.
YES, yes it is. I left MA for OK. It's a privileged to get an interview there
Amen...are there any adults up at 23rd&Lincoln...don't answer. I know there are. What a concept. https://t.co/q1pj2BEJtm
A4) at some point we are going to have to put politics and Rs and Ds to bed be adults and come up with a solution for the problem
We need sensible tax reform - all tax rates, credits, breaks, etc should be looked at for their value on Oklahoma core services
A4) Eliminate the tax credits and reorganize our tax structure to help fund not only public Ed but DHS and other organizations.
But it's so much easier to fight and blame the other person. https://t.co/JY3qlyCx3D
A4) at some point we are going to have to put politics and Rs and Ds to bed be adults and come up with a solution for the problem
A4 I'm Pollyanna: prioritize budget the right way, find industries/businesses outside not o&g, restructure taxes
Reality is that areas with more $ will get creative. The Ss in high FRL areas will suffer most because they have no net
A4 no budget expert here, but tax cuts didn't help. Long term, we also have to diversify OK econ so we aren't reliant on oil/gas ind
A4) not sure how much it would help but start taxing for online purchases. I mean, I love Amazon too but...
solid asses that can show a gain or loss is better for the Ss than standards. Child will learn. Will show on ass.
I agree with https://t.co/KtDo9BIlla
A4: An unpopular 1 - increase class sizes, add a T asst, & keep R amazing Ts leading quality learning. https://t.co/51UqT0Qy6X
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
A4) tax credits given to so many businesses must be re-evaluated. These should be given for a limited time only not indefinitely
A4) Quit cutting as a start.
A shift of 5 or 6 key seats would change momentum in the entire legislature. We don't have to take over - we just have to matter.
As a fairly new member of OK I was SHOCKED that all the eggs were put in one basket! Econ 101 says bad juju https://t.co/ape6nUUPxg
A4 no budget expert here, but tax cuts didn't help. Long term, we also have to diversify OK econ so we aren't reliant on oil/gas ind
Yes...this!!! https://t.co/zdzxyKsSyc
A4) at some point we are going to have to put politics and Rs and Ds to bed be adults and come up with a solution for the problem
Agreed. It would’t hurt to stop giving tax breaks to companies who make millions/billions… https://t.co/SBT9M5TsCB
A4) not sure how much it would help but start taxing for online purchases. I mean, I love Amazon too but...
I'm with you there. Amazon would still be cheaper if they charged taxes...
A4 It just seems like extremism has taken over both national and local politics. Compromise doesn't exist in their vocabulary...
A4: fully fund and run until we are out of $$$. Then close up shop & show real effects of budget priorities https://t.co/4RkaWtKMAW
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
I was JK by the way. That's a terrible thing to do. And naturally the House passed it.
A4 If our state survives these next few years, someone needs to look at our neighboring states and see how they manage.
No worries... I like your passion for
there's not enough time in the day for that. 😉
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
Yes, starting today please! Our Ss should come first. https://t.co/r0bAN5VEqh
A4) at some point we are going to have to put politics and Rs and Ds to bed be adults and come up with a solution for the problem
I’m not familiar with all of this - Have we not learned 2 depend so much on ? Do something different? https://t.co/SuuhQDvzr4
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
A4:The budget issue should have been the first problem to fix when the legislature began. Cutting programs shouldn't be a solution.
Not good? Kids need more classroom time not less IMO. ELL and poverty kids especially
I worry about our kids with poor home lives. 3 day weekends are already hard on them. https://t.co/RVfFCq7Fpi
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
yes, and so does OK history...I'll volunteer to go teach a few days at the Capitol!
A4) do Legis every look at other states or ask out of state Legis how they do things?
A5: While it can work for some districts, it is not a viable answer for all districts. https://t.co/aDpKG3abKU
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
A4: Merit pay for state legislative leadership. We'll do a VAM based on the economy when they came into office, and compare...
A5: It is one less day with my Ss and one less day to do really cool stuff. I don't like. Says the girl that loves three weekends.
Agree - my first thought was of hungry kids. https://t.co/5wc8XndIVY
Not good? Kids need more classroom time not less IMO. ELL and poverty kids especially
Wrote to my leggies...begged them 2 solve budget w no distractions...look how well I convinced them. https://t.co/0zeB7Bacgi
A4:The budget issue should have been the first problem to fix when the legislature began. Cutting programs shouldn't be a solution.
5: I’m not in favor of it. Our Ss will b home, possibly unsupervised,& spending less time n classes lrning. https://t.co/WtyiNhDbsm
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
A4: I have no idea how to fix the budget, but informed people have failed year after year to make education a priority. :(
A5- it will be nice as a T for the day "off" but I don't truly think it's best for my Ss who have very rough homes school is escape
A5 In districts with small Ss population and large geography it makes sense. In most cases it isn't realistic.
A3) I need to go back and add the importance of portfolio "assessments." Great way to see how students are applying
A5: Sorry, I really dislike the 4-day week. Hurts our neediest kids more than the affluent. For some kids, school is a refuge.
A5) not ideal for working parents.
A5 I'm not in favor of the 4 day week. Some kids go w/o meals on weekends, why add a day to that?
A5: Ask yourself, is a 4 day week best for our students? My answer is NO
A5) I don't like it. Not good for students. Would teachers expect/demand raises if and when schools returned to 5 day weeks?
Q5 Short term: let parents know ASAP so arrangements can be made. Long term: if that is the solution lets get behind it and succeed
A5 -- What about parents who can't afford/arrange ONE day of daycare? What about hungry kids? Hourly school workers?
A5 Wouldn't save us much money. Certified salaries are the same. CNO is self-funded. https://t.co/uvaRzPZzDJ
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
A5: Sure, the answer must be LESS class time with MORE Ss per class. Poor kids get less food and all get more unsupervised time
THAT is the question we should ask about every decision we make in education. https://t.co/a0NF4pi7b8
A5: Ask yourself, is a 4 day week best for our students? My answer is NO
A5) Very concerned about 4-day wk option for our students facing food security/hunger issues
A5) Not good for Ss or their families. Especially younger kids. I'd love that work week, but it is a bad idea.
Sometimes the worst thing we do to a kid is send them home.
saddest and truest tweet ever.
a5) I worry about the childcare burden to families. and choices some will make.. I think it will put kids in unsafe situations.
A5: No like. https://t.co/xHUSifbTX8
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
Q5A) Would you leave a district who has a 5 day week for a district moving to a 4 day week?
A5 w/ 70% free/reduced lunch, the 4-day week would really hurt our kids
YES. School is the only security for so many of them. A three day weekend could do serious harm. https://t.co/vsxakaSqLN
A5: Sorry, I really dislike the 4-day week. Hurts our neediest kids more than the affluent. For some kids, school is a refuge.
A5: it doesn't seem like it is good for the students
needs the resources required to offer students more time not less.
A5: we can make it work but I don't like kids not getting all the resources we offer https://t.co/KYiyEmhaVg
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
A5: my long-term concern is the burden 4-day weeks put on working parents to find daycare for Friday's.
A5: I vote 0-days. If we can't afford public ed, let's just shut it down. Entirely. See how that plays out. https://t.co/69QmHPvUC9
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
"A politician is just like a pickpocket; it's almost impossible to get one to reform." Will Rogers
A5 4 day would hurt those Ss needing consistency and regular assistance
My apologies. Thanks for the heads up.
A5a) Nope. My daughter is 5 and I want her in a more stable environment.
A5: Riddle me this, would sports' practices only end up being 4x a week. I highly doubt that.
Nope! committed to our Ss. https://t.co/iBkDz1P6u2
Q5A) Would you leave a district who has a 5 day week for a district moving to a 4 day week?
A5) It depends on the community. Not good in high poverty areas.
a5) Truth is a 6 day week would be best for many.
A5a: No. I know the Ss in my dist need me everyday. https://t.co/vYug4KBJGk
Q5A) Would you leave a district who has a 5 day week for a district moving to a 4 day week?
No 4-day week. Ss need instructional time and adding minutes to each day won't replace lessons. Am I to teach 1.25 lessons per day?
A5: It's called 'love and logic'. Let natural consequences shape behavioral change.
Some Legis look at what ALEC is doing in other states and do exactly the same regardless of success
A5: isn’t that really tough on parents?
A5) IMO, It would be tough for our younger students and our community, parents especially.
A5) I'm not a fan and I would not go to a district moving to a 4 day week.
A5) The 4 day school week is not good for our Ss. However, many of the decisions we have to make because of the budget are bad
A5: Worst case, we all have to get better paying jobs.
Exactly. Then we fund the prisons instead.
Horrible short term, horrible long term. https://t.co/3cvTuFjyqk
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
Scary thing is some districts convince communities to accept 4 day week as teacher recruitment. Guess we will go to 3
A5 bad idea more kids not getting enough to eat. Some getting into more trouble. School is a place some kids get their only love
haha. Legis would say that would NEVER work. It isn't fair to be "judged" off of things you cant control. Oh wait...
This is ironic considering Will Roger's works are what one leg. wanted S to read...
A5 hate hate hate hate hate hate double hate loathe entirely. AP exams in May and we need EVERY DADGUM DAY.
Not good for S attention spans, 3-Day weekend leads to unproductive/lazy days for most https://t.co/MDOECCMqUx
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
A5: N to the O to the NO NO NO. (I would leave for a 4 day district).
That is already happening to thousands of Ss a year who drop out for one reason or another
A5a) for that alone? Nope.
Too many OK leggies are beholden to ALEC...and suffers. https://t.co/sXOgrQoGKZ
Some Legis look at what ALEC is doing in other states and do exactly the same regardless of success
A5) Against 4 day week! Research in Co. shows little savings. No way it's good for young people Teachers will work dark 2 dark.
I think it will be our students who will pay the ultimate price 🙁
A5A Their Ts are welcome to sub for us on Fridays! https://t.co/HRbIeubXoI
Q5A) Would you leave a district who has a 5 day week for a district moving to a 4 day week?
A5) Districts are doing what they feel is needed, but I know what some of my S's go home to, & they need to be w/me as long as poss.
People in my house work 5 days a week…I think this should be a community decision, not a forced one.
https://t.co/6sqy1s398G
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
I say we turn the state a bit bluer in November and then elect in Nov. '18. Shake things up a bit. https://t.co/9yK93Wufi5
Q4) With OMES saying February’s collections being down a total of 18%, what is your solution to budget crisis?
A5: Do any states have a 4-day school week? Not something I want Oklahoma to be known for.
A5) a 4 day week needs supporting data. Show me. Then let's look and decide together.
I worry it will encourage predatory people to enter into childcare. Likely educators will still work.
Insert sarcasm - I guess a 4-day week would allow more time for that second job I'll need.
A5: I feel 4 day week hurts the students,BUT could save jobs! They put all the pressure on the schools to make the hard choices.
Not only disconnects S from real-world circumstances, but what is the S doing while parents are at work?
As in - forced to go four days so that the district can stay solvent.
A5 My own little people would struggle with 4 day routine
A4a: You'll have to drag me away from Adair. I'll probably die of old age in room number 2. https://t.co/LyZoUH5Qz0
Q5A) Would you leave a district who has a 5 day week for a district moving to a 4 day week?
A5). It's irresponsible if the community does not circle the wagon to add needs of kids. late & lurking NPS T
A5A- my district is 4 day next year. We thought it would be attracting to other Ts, but can't afford to hire them
Many of our families rely on the two meals schools provide, as well, as a safe place for their Ss to be during the day while Ps work
BOOM!
https://t.co/4h24JFO08j
A5A- my district is 4 day next year. We thought it would be attracting to other Ts, but can't afford to hire them
A5a No. I wouldn't want my children to go to a school with 4 days why would I want to teach there....
It needs to be across the board. Every T, A, S, etc. Just hand it over and say "show us your wisdom".
Agreed. Why are we working together to break the cycle of poverty by providing resources to ALL kids? https://t.co/N7BqG1ClBm
Sometimes I think this is all just a bad dream. I will wake up and poor kids will be just as valued as rich kids.
Unless you lock doors, you save money on fuel for buses and lunches. Longer days and shorter year is better https://t.co/yzsEbGUJWs
Q5) Thinking both long term & short term for , what are your thoughts on the 4 days per week calendar solution?
I have a 100+ student case of ELLs grades 3-6. .05 for them and the other 50 percent for GT. Does not work
As someone with friends who have high needs Ss, childcare isn't as easy as some think for our most needy kids
Have talked to admins from districts in and other states that have seen success with 4day week. Wouldn't work in my community.
We can and we WILL create change!! I won't stop until it happens!! https://t.co/1qlN6oAFOS
The pattern is full. Also, thank you for everything you've done. I think about our mess and get depressed. You give me hope.
Q6) With regards to teacher shortage, what immediate action can we take to reverse the recent trend for ?
A5 I worry about my firsties retention of info...they need so much practice and hands on instruction
A5) Not a good option for students. Does nothing to improve effective teaching and learning. Hurts high poverty areas.
or for the ones we already have. Sigh
I had a student tell me Monday is my favorite day, Friday is the worst. We just sent him home an extra day every week next year.
Follow up to 5a: I also wouldn't hire a teacher who wanted to transfer only because of the 3 day weekend.
IMO, 1 Contact day w/ a T is worth more than extra 5 minutes per day spread out over 147 days.
A5b 3 day weekends are long for Ss who depend on school breakfast and lunch
A5: This is where I land. Just can't get the savings to balance the effect on those who need that 5th day. https://t.co/U6cHAocp3z
A5 -- What about parents who can't afford/arrange ONE day of daycare? What about hungry kids? Hourly school workers?
Worried that Fridays then become a free-for-all; Increased Fights? Over-Sleeping? Drug use? S's w/o food on wknds?
Not for that reason alone, nope. https://t.co/LxDtUsTvgd
Q5A) Would you leave a district who has a 5 day week for a district moving to a 4 day week?
If our Leggies vote against our OAS after reading this, we know who will never support and our kids. https://t.co/aWxN9RkZGu
A6 Raise cap for retired Ts to continue working could bring some back in immediately. Others will take a few years to impact
A6: Teacher shortage cannot be immediately fixed. We need a more supportive climate for education in our state. No quick fix.
If we value Ts then we should demand more contact days and not less! Ts make the difference in lives of children
Other districts have done it successfully. I think it depends on district. Lots of Ss home alone on 5th day though.
A6: Make it appealing, advocate and share the great things happening in schools, make people want to work for/with you.
A6: RESPECT. All of our issues truly come from a lack of respect towards our profession. Fix the root of the problem first.
I contacted my legislators this week about it
And for our students who depend on food…three days without regular meals.
{1/2} I talked to one mom whose district is going to 4-day; she is making the most of it.
A6: find ways to retain those already doing great things in the classroom
A6: some sort of incentive or scholarship for higher Ed Ss to take Ed courses or pursue teaching profession.
Not sure how 4 day weeks can be successful. Some districts it may not effect 95% but is the other 5 that concern me
A6) We have to increase teacher pay and encourage the best and brightest to pursue education.
A5a)Nope. I love my district. It would take more than that to make me leave-like my husband changing jobs. But, since I am single...
I already have students asking me on Friday if they can go home with me.
Define "successfully." According to bottom line, test scores, low-performing Ss?
A6 Not sure there is a short term solution to the teacher shortage...other than be sure to keep the Ts we already have!
A6: Ts need 2feel loved, appreciated, & respected. Let As use things like brag boards 2boast abt awesome Ts. https://t.co/KGsmzitu8w
A6-I see long term ideas...recruiting, respect, teacher prep, salaries. Short term? Baffled.
A6: Rep needs changing. Buddies from out of state KNOW our state's rep for Edu...& it isn't flattering.
Should be a community decision - different places work different ways.
Damn straight! https://t.co/0OVc9lmKcR
A6: RESPECT. All of our issues truly come from a lack of respect towards our profession. Fix the root of the problem first.
A6: IMO the salary of educators must be addressed before we will see a change in teacher shortage
Scary thing about teacher recruitment is taking my teacher may help you but does not help
A6: $$, respect, help with S loans, some kind of recognition for a great job in the classroom
A6-I DO know I'd not come out of retirement for $18000 and all the mandates. Nu-huh.
A5a) No. Any teacher that would, is in the wrong profession
A6: Teaching is a career choice, a profession. Until people see it that way again, the shortage will go on in our state.
A6) Pay has a lot to do with it. We need better incentives that help our T candidates pay off S loans
A5) I am not for a 4 day week just my opinion
Spot on. Sum it up to say, it is impossible to predict how many problems it would cause and what they are. https://t.co/V1xZxpROZU
Worried that Fridays then become a free-for-all; Increased Fights? Over-Sleeping? Drug use? S's w/o food on wknds?
A6: Establish true T efficacy
{2/2} She's using it for "Arts/Outdoor Act." Piano lesns, park trips, etc. but what about P's who can't afford that?
A6) T's need to see their parents advocating for them. They need to know there is light @ the end of the tunnel (that's not a train)
Q6: if a tax break for aerospace engineers has been effective & since we love tax incentives-give new T's a 5 yr tax incentive
they have implemented it and FORCED it to work. Not necessarily what is best for Ss.
A6) Our Supt. recognizes how crucial this is to . He helps us as Ts find positive in . As a T, it's GR8.

A6-and I very much want to be part of the long-term fix. Let's get started!
No way! ROCK!!! Love my district!😀 https://t.co/2kqubSFsMd
Q5A) Would you leave a district who has a 5 day week for a district moving to a 4 day week?
I agree! A positive PR campaign!
A6: VOTE for our supporters, and against the scrap throwing leggis. I don't know about you but I am tired already of this!
T shortage needs a 2 prong solution - short term keeping the Ts we have -long term need to increase #'s in T prep programs
Hey friends. Just checking in. Following along a bit but w my Goddaughters tonight. Will check Storify too.
A7: there is no such thing as a long term and successful simple or quick fix to this. It will only take time https://t.co/R4kSLfcKVG
Q6) With regards to teacher shortage, what immediate action can we take to reverse the recent trend for ?
I wish we had a better public transportation system, it's not totally related but still important
A6: I believe there was legislation to keep treating Ts horribly, but print some pamphlets about how rewarding it is to teach...
A6: Support, grow Ts that we have. Encourage youth wanting to go into . https://t.co/qFyu4qwc8p
Q6) With regards to teacher shortage, what immediate action can we take to reverse the recent trend for ?
It's time to let the education professionals educate. https://t.co/0Wbzcuz9Ls
A6: RESPECT. All of our issues truly come from a lack of respect towards our profession. Fix the root of the problem first.
I am very thankful for the T's that ❤️/educate my boys each day. It's the most important job there is IMO
A6: teachers need to be put in situations where they can be successful...not 35 in classroom, loads of hoops to jump through, &hope
Exactly-afraid loosening requirements for Ts in classroom will hurt more than help. https://t.co/C6CRhY7oOB
T shortage needs a 2 prong solution - short term keeping the Ts we have -long term need to increase #'s in T prep programs
A6 support from our communities--vocal support with legis., at ballot boxes, in our schools volunteering
With our income we'd feel very little, but community services would suffer due to our large . https://t.co/gaiIJkGBRb
Q6: if a tax break for aerospace engineers has been effective & since we love tax incentives-give new T's a 5 yr tax incentive
A5a)No I definitely would not leave for a 4 days work week
A6) starting $40k salary. Less "busy work" for busy people. Smaller classes. Consistency. Respect.
A6 With all the publicity on TV and in the papers, not many will want enter here in OK. No matter how much we talk it up!
A6: T's jobs more doable. More time for valuable PD/coaching, $, smaller Class Sizes, more support with behavioral issues,
A6: Let's drop the pretense of tough evaluations and strict standards - THANK YOU WARM BODY HERE'S YOUR CLASS PLEASE DON'T QUIT!
let education students teach and get paid while they go to school at night?
I like your thinking! https://t.co/Bo2t1HuXET
A6) starting $40k salary. Less "busy work" for busy people. Smaller classes. Consistency. Respect.
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
T shortage could be fixed if we were able to recruit Ts from surrounding states instead of losing Ts to surrounding states
That sounds a lot like HB 1017 from 1991! https://t.co/wfOmojC82R
A6) starting $40k salary. Less "busy work" for busy people. Smaller classes. Consistency. Respect.
A6) . Just thinking the same...Tax incentives for new T. Long term this would not help the budget. https://t.co/LFZ8RKWP7P
Q6: if a tax break for aerospace engineers has been effective & since we love tax incentives-give new T's a 5 yr tax incentive
you are pretty amazing yourself! Very glad to know you!!
For me, it's a/b telling me that I'm valued & the work I do is valued. Words of affirmation matter https://t.co/YDjjVmKqFH
How can we keep the ones we have? Some schools can afford and too many other Ts are just leaving. I know several who are out
2 nts A spring theme 8pm

A7: I'm very nice to 3 of them and trying to get 12 new ones elected. Does that count? https://t.co/WnFFjpkIUw
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
May 3rd, not to be confused with
we have to do something. Majority of us are dedicated educators. But something HAS to give.
I think if it's aggressively contracted, it can turn around.
A7) Get out of the box. Everything including certification has to be on the table to fix
A7-I warned my new leggies that I lived 20 m closer to the Capitol and I WOULD be seeing them. We are BFFs
Ooof. Sad reality to look forward too...
A7 Blogging. They love it when I do that. https://t.co/AWTz3FrgRP
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
A7: I send lots of emails. I plead my case to the not so good ones and I thank the good ones.
A7: advocate and create atmosphere where education is respected and valued also calling out the haters... https://t.co/9gP787CUHY
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
. Tell your legislators to raise the cigarette tax. Ours is way below the national average. It keeps us unhealthy and broke.
A7 letters...both advocating and relaying what happens in my classroom. Since they don't come to me, I send my class to them!
A7: Contacting the elec off that vote to support issues & thanking them! Let them know we care & vote! https://t.co/0OkXr8qvP7
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
A7: Don't just contact Legislatures when your upset... They will begin to tune you out... Pick the correct battles
Do away with teacher certification testing. A test will not tell you if if you can teach. Wasted expense to future T’s.
the legislature and governor needs to measure ever bill in terms of how it will effect tecaher recruitment and retention
We must not make enemies out of POLs who support us-I know it is hard, but we should not treat every issue like its our only issue
Imagine if every school district in had an .. Imagine having so many involved parents being advocates for us.
A7: I have emailed legislators. I even tweeted & she wrote back! :)
Where do you live??? I want to live there too - expertise sought out before legislation passed…inspiring. https://t.co/3uBUEXkoJZ
Would love to be seen as a professional. My voice heard. My expertise sought by elected leaders.
https://t.co/SRqZmLx8Lg
Once again, this poses the question- How do we make non-voters see value in going to the polls & voting pro- https://t.co/ycqrvGRRPr
Q6) With regards to teacher shortage, what immediate action can we take to reverse the recent trend for ?
A7-Worked to create a positive relationship with Legs & assistants. Listen. Ask open-ended questions. Kinda like teaching.
A7- email, email, email... And inviting leg to school events/field trips
A7 Honestly, nothing beats face-to-face, one-on-one. Our best legislators will call or text for my thoughts now.
A7) I personally contact my legislators and encourage my teachers to contact theirs.
A7: I communicate often w/my legislators. My Rep follows & Likes school fb posts-he sees the great things our school/Ss do everyday.
Learned from you! Taking time to email, call, and meet legislatures face to face.
A7: keeping parents and grandparents informed so it is not just coming from peeps...
A7: keeping parents and grandparents informed so it is not just coming from peeps...
A7) daily emails. Inviting them to award assemblies, school functions, sporting events, etc. Waiting to give a tour
A6) Showing appreciation & respect will help keep current T's. Pay increase is needed, but teaching is in my blood.
Choose fewer ditches in which to die. AND calls/emails mean little if they don't translate to votes in June+ https://t.co/JG8kTKrDZu
We must not make enemies out of POLs who support us-I know it is hard, but we should not treat every issue like its our only issue
A7: Trying to target my vitriol towards those who are truly deserving and my admiration and respect to everyone else.
Honestly, I believe that we teach people how to treat us so perhaps we need to reflect on what message we're sending to others
Also, taking the time to thank legislators who support public education with their votes
A7: Thanking the good ones, emails, and once again inviting them to my classroom to watch me teach. and having a presence at the Cap.
Q6: Make our schools a vibrant place that draws a crowd of new T's. Turn on the engagement switch! All IN. https://t.co/CmBEoE8hFw
Q6) With regards to teacher shortage, what immediate action can we take to reverse the recent trend for ?
AGREE! I am actually getting phone calls from POLs asking me my thoughts on legislation https://t.co/5b9AojuIGF
A7 Honestly, nothing beats face-to-face, one-on-one. Our best legislators will call or text for my thoughts now.
A5: I could make it work, but it's not about me. It's about how many of our Ss would suffer. Food? Safety? Love?
A7: I'm growing weary of trying to build relationships with those who don't listen. Time to begin electing new legislators.
It's time to call on our Communities to make our T's feel appreciated and valued for changing the world https://t.co/ycqrvGRRPr
Q6) With regards to teacher shortage, what immediate action can we take to reverse the recent trend for ?
A7) Most important question of the night. Flood Twitter and Facebook is awesome but you must spend time with YOUR legislator
A7 Communicating with reps in a positive manner, sending well thought out correspondence. https://t.co/WB8g5PzfJN
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
In some places/countries all teachers have masters degrees. Jobs are difficult to come by. Can we do what they do?
Interesting. I know alot of older individuals who would love to teach. Student teaching holds them back.
A7-Say 'thank you' whenever I possibly can. Even for little things. Visit & leave cool postcards with personal notes.
When was the last time you asked your legislator to come speak to your class? They will see the impact you have on your students
Q7: I will be handwriting 3 thank you cards tomorrow. The e mail traffic seems to get lost in the weeds. Sounds old school , but
Great to read that many people are actively engaging with legislators to address teacher shortages! https://t.co/LuI594atsn
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
Been working 2 years to build our Facebook page to inform T's and P's how to contact legislators. https://t.co/0c5wmWLCAk
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
As a T that is 90 minutes from the capitol, face to face can be hard.
I believe this is a moment for https://t.co/ZYC0EC8JDz
Q6: if a tax break for aerospace engineers has been effective & since we love tax incentives-give new T's a 5 yr tax incentive
A6: needs to stay strong like this. Don't be intimidated and refuse to back down. Together we are strong. https://t.co/xzgoMSDCxA
Amen. Sen. Schultz came and spoke 2 my Ss in Clinton. Best time, great supporter of . https://t.co/1f48YGxFwr
When was the last time you asked your legislator to come speak to your class? They will see the impact you have on your students
One of our biggest issues is "preaching to the choir" get of of your comfort zone and sell
Sometimes old school works best! Who doesn't like getting "real" mail that someone actually wrote!? https://t.co/FVeudlOwf3
Q7: I will be handwriting 3 thank you cards tomorrow. The e mail traffic seems to get lost in the weeds. Sounds old school , but
Not to make excuses, but for those of us on this side of the state w/ day jobs, it's difficult... https://t.co/zyKksQJfA8
A7) Most important question of the night. Flood Twitter and Facebook is awesome but you must spend time with YOUR legislator
recruit in areas where there are 2 many teachers. Professor in college told us if we wanted a ft job, we needed to look outside RI
and thank goodness for it!
its "ok" to respectfully disagree.
Agreed! We can't burn them at the stake for one vote! That's the quickest way to lose support! https://t.co/SyrvxJenPM
We must not make enemies out of POLs who support us-I know it is hard, but we should not treat every issue like its our only issue
Every teacher should want to do this!

A7 Blogging. They love it when I do that. https://t.co/AWTz3FrgRP
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
A7: It's becoming more apparent that for many legislators, the only way to get their true attention is to remove their power.
is FULL of talented, passionate T's but how often do we/I show them they're appreciated? Not enough!
EXACTLY! Again, like in the classroom...respect our Ss, and earn theirs. So many parallels.
A7) I email legislators and post info on FB for colleagues, P's, GP's to read & encourage them to contact leg's as well.
They have to give up a job, teach for a semester for free, and may not have replacement income.
Q8) Where do you see in 1 year? 5 years? What role do you see yourself playing for the positive outcome of our future?
Would you want your own kids to become teachers in right now? I fear our shortage is going to get much worse.
I try emailing mine to get their views. I don’t get much in response. As in zero…
A7 I have emailed, texted and called my state rep and senator as well as those on the national level. Thank you's also.
I wish I could do this more. But with my part-time job, it's difficult to find the time!
A6 Not sure, read recently I could be a NFL water boy & earn $51,000.
A5a: of course not, but that's no judgement & all support for Ts who choose to.
I agree. Eventhough we are 2 hours from Capitol, my rep is active in district so I get 2 catch up w/him @ local events.
I'm fortunate. My office is 15 minutes from Capitol. I know our legislators are glad I can make it so frequently.
My first time hear hello all.
A8: I have said this a lot tonight...Respect. I want this profession and community to be treated with the respect that it deserves.
do you email them in June, August, or February? That is when we need to https://t.co/YPN46oet1I
I try emailing mine to get their views. I don’t get much in response. As in zero…
Q8) That's a tough one! I will be teaching because I love it, but I won't encourage my kids to do it. Can't support a family.
A7-My former Senator, , reminds me politics is a marathon, not a sprint. Bldin relationship will pay off in long run.
exactly...it's tough, and alt cert has its issues, too.
I wonder how many OK legislators are active on Twitter or take part in - study idea? https://t.co/LuI594atsn
Q7) What are you doing personally to develop a positive relationship w/ policy makers to ensure a better tomorrow for Ss, Ts, & Ps?
Not often enough there - I can do better
Yes. Still yes. If that's their passion, I get it. Just go in with eyes wide open. https://t.co/S86RCSBmhG
Would you want your own kids to become teachers in right now? I fear our shortage is going to get much worse.
A8: 1 year-hurting, 5 years-recovering. I plan to stick around and continue CPR on the system.
A7: When education seems out of my control, I focus my efforts inside the 4 walls of my classroom. That's where I make a difference.
Really depends on how this next election goes. https://t.co/mLxuV5dSD1
Q8) Where do you see in 1 year? 5 years? What role do you see yourself playing for the positive outcome of our future?

A8 My hope is that the pile of applicants will be 40:1 not 1:5 want the best opportunity for quality Ts
A8: With demise of NCLB/RttT, there is some light at the Fed level. Legs no longer can blame Feds for destr policies. We can control
Q8: we begin to embrace blended Learning & virtual platforms with such aplomb that we ask ourselves about 200 school day calendars
A8: Still kicking on whatever social platform that is popular & hopefully still here but $ is a real concern https://t.co/82FCTdmtGl
Q8) Where do you see in 1 year? 5 years? What role do you see yourself playing for the positive outcome of our future?

A8) 1year- fighting like hell to keep our heads above water
5 years- hopefully still public
A8 1 yr? 5 yrs? Honestly I don't know. If things don't change, I'm not sure I can stay in - I know that won't be popular but...
A8 next year will be ugly, but I'll be in room 133 just like always. 5 years, depends a lot on leg and econ
A8) 1yr = recovering, 5yrs = improving - I'm a pollyanna. My role is as voter and a positive mentor teacher. https://t.co/X0TSdQ4Zra

I refuse to lose! is a noble profession & our Ss deserve a bright future- I will work hard everyday to make their dreams come true
A8: I will still be teaching and loving my Ss. Everything else is just background noise. They will need me even more I'm afraid.
So, blogging. I don't because I don't often have something to say publicly. But if we had one where we could occasionally write...
A8) it will be better if we can work as hard electing the right people as we do battling legislation
🤔 we will talk about in our next class :)
A8) In 1 yr I see struggling making cuts to programs that hurt Ss & Ts. In 5yr will have recovered from current budget cuts.

A8 (x2): next 5 years oklaed will be celebrating governor & cabinet that support public education & send robo calls accordingly
It'll get better whether that happens or not. Stakeholders will always find a way. https://t.co/QQRH6dy0D4

A8) I'm not sure but hoping for a better tomorrow for our Ss and future Ts.
A8b I see myself in the classroom as T, involved in PTA, and community making connection being a voice for Ss and Ed
Agreed. Living paycheck to paycheck is only fun when you're young...
A8: There's no reason to think none of us could 'love our jobs' at +50% pay in a neighboring state. Those kids matter, too.
A8) Still fighting in 1 yr, rebuilding next 5 yrs. I will cont. to adv & fight for oklaed, & encourage all T's to do the same.
I was thinking the same thing today...I love this idea! https://t.co/ifn32OnWgc

So, blogging. I don't because I don't often have something to say publicly. But if we had one where we could occasionally write...
maybe.but as long as we can retain the good ones like you it'll be worth it. 😊
A8: Since education has become so politicized, issues will never be solved, and we will always have to be able to stand up to it.
A8: There's a point at which staying = enabling and approving, like an abusive relationship.
we have to continue to build relationships https://t.co/ONd5kAqHZD
I have asked the two larger districts Supers their thoughts on the new education standards - very helpful

Ouch! And yet there's a hint of truth there... hmmm...
I write when I'm passionate and after reading&learning,&reading more, I've been inspired to write more!
Thanks for the inspiration tonight! Ready to teach some awesome Ss tomorrow!
Great ques ! Thanks for keeping us on track for the Ss!
I refuse to believe that point will be reached. Pollyanna again.
We should have a collective blog! Educators could take turns writing posts!
The interval will shrink, but you have to start somewhere! 😃
our votes at the polls matter just as much as theirs during session
