Welcome to #sstlap chat! @PeterPaccone and I are guest hosting this evening discussing alternatives to writing in history. We're so happy you can join us.
A1. My name is Peter Paccone and I am a San Marino High School social studies teacher. I’m also the @KQEDedspace In the Classroom Coordinating Editor.
#sstlap
Hi #sstlap, this is Bill Chapman, a retired secondary social studies teacher, checking in from Berkeley, CA. Summer, winter, spring or fall, my days are pretty much the same - read, think, tweet.

Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana Univ. Hoping to keep an eye on both #sstlap and #INeLearn tonight. :)
Welcome Chuck. My friend @scottmpetri speaks very highly of you. #sstlap. BTW. Your first place Brewers, how are they doing against the rapidly up and coming Dodgers.
A2: Until we entered the age of technology, I also assigned the same kind of writing that lots of social studies teachers assigned - the kind that can appear on the classroom wall and be showcased at back-to-school night. #sstlap
Hey Chris. I've been to Bloomington. Home of the school and the quarries and the famous bike movie. That's why I went. To ride through Bloomington. #sstlap
Very cool! I've actually never sat and watched either "Breaking Away" or "Hoosiers" all the way through in one setting. Hope they don't take my Hoosier card away. LOL #sstlap
A3. In my recent @KQEDedspace article Not the Usual Suspects: Alternative Writing Assignments for US History, I described four alternative writings that I have put before my students: https://t.co/SVvPeck3ar#sstlap
A3. The Historical Fiction Letter called upon students to write a letter to the class describing an important day in American history as told from the perspective of someone who experience it, with the letter-writer to assume he/she was between the age of 18-25 writing. #sstlap
A3: The Mini-BRIA called upon students to write a two-page document (modeled after the @CRF’s four-page BRIA’s). Essentially a report that thoroughly explains some topic related to U.S. History. https://t.co/GWtqbLrSfS#sstlap
A3 Anders Henriksson has been collecting and publishing student hist bloopers for quite some time. I liked to pick a sentence or two, give them to a student, then ask them to identify and correct any mistakes in them. Lots of fun and laughter. See https://t.co/pkmKYM62nl#sstlap
A3: I’ve also tried the Local History Blog Post. This writing assignment call upon students to create a 700-1000 word blog post that reveales something about local history. #sstlap
A3) The final capstone project in my world history 2 course involves Ss identifying a current global issue, exploring its historical basis, and advocating a solution or prediction based on what they've learned. #sstlap
A3: I did a blogging project where students blogged from the perspective of a king, noble, knight or peasant as we experienced events from the Middle Ages. #sstlap

I read your article about how your use discussion board and visual dbq's at the middle school level. Curious about how both of those would work at the high school level. So no reason why they wouldn't. #sstlap

My Ss also completed the Hamilton project. Take a primary source or 2. Read & analyze. Create a song, poem, scene based of off & integrating PS. #sstlap
A5. Next year, I will try to find someone in the community, ideally a retired English teacher, writer and/or editor, who would be willing to help me grade the writing. #sstlap
A5. Next year I will search for a local college student willing to provide the needed support. Ideally I would like to find someone enrolled in a teacher credentially program wanting to intern #sstlap
That can take it to a new level. Found my APWH students back in the day got a lot out of creating a DBQ about 2/3 of the way through the year. Really had to think about it a different way than just answering one. #sstlap
I'm curious if any of you get criticized by admins, peers, and/or parents when you assign works other than the DBQ, LEQ, and SAQ, especially if the work calls for kids to write fiction and/or "more creatively." #sstlap
A4: Ss love anything that focuses on the 4 Cs. When students can collaborate and create, they are more empowered to use critical thinking and enjoy the process. #sstlap
A5. I’m going to spend the summer reworking (aka streamlining) my rubrics. I’m also determined to explore the world of peer grading and Automated Writing Feedback Programs Help Teachers Coach Students How to Write https://t.co/k6On1Xi0VA#sstlap

A4: my Ss love writing assignments that they can choose and develop on their own. The blogging projects had them create their own character, backstory, life and apply historical knowledge to develop a blog. #sstlap
Have you had them blog about their writing process for essay writing? I wonder if exploring that and seeing what other students do might be useful? #sstlap
A4 Ss have more fun with the creative... althouit some some more getting used to initially, esp AP who want more spoon feeding. It's all about creating & TCELL I tell them. Spit back facts is for Google! #sstlap

A5. By far, the biggest challenge I face with any writing assighment is finding the time to grade it all. The truth is, I really struggle in this regard. #sstlap
A5: The forever challenge of every teacher. I started focusing on skills and practicing them in small bites versus full blown essays. Assessing these smaller assessments was quicker and I was able to give more timely and frequent feedback. #sstlap
A5: I meet with students 1 on 1 and provide feedback (grade it with them). I have students grade their own writing. These have lessened the amount of grading I take h me to almost nothing. . #sstlap
Here are 3 quick alternatives to a typical DBQ essay that I wrote about on my blog and how I broke down the skills into smaller assignments - https://t.co/BSN7MRySBS#sstlap
A5 That is the perpetual beast!!! I try to keep up, but with 3 World classes and 4 AP Gov classes I fall behind... especially during AcaDeca season. #sstlap
A5) Huge struggle for me as I have to provide feedback on everything as that's the main instructional opportunity I have with Ss individually (online, self-paced setting). Hoping to add more formative pieces that could be machine graded. #sstlap

#sstlap A5 same as all - time to be give timely feedback, and allow Ss to improve - only way to see growth is to offer more writing, which is more time ...
It works the best when you have a visuals-heavy document set like political cartoons. Can definitely see it used more in HS. Not as many political cartoons at MS level/content. Kids loved it! #sstlap
A6: Ever since going 1:1 Chromebooks, my students are writing every day. I focus on meaningful writing and providing options and a variety of types of writing to make it relevant to students. #sstlap
A6. I show students what other students have done; I also stress the importance of making time to reflect and revise; I also encourage students to submit their work to me in the form of a Google Doc, if only to give me a chance to make some comments before they hand it in #sstlap
A6 #sstlap - a great question - we can't expect them just to know how to write - but we want to go beyond a formula. Trying to develop an easy reflection for Ss to check writing - but if they don;t know how to write, self assessment doesn't really matter (because it looks ok!)
A6 To be honest, I'm more explicit about in with my sophomores in prep World. Sentence frames, caps, structured writing, main idea drills. Chunk and scaffold research and writing. #sstlap
A6 That is also a benefit of using Anders Henriksson's student generated historical bloopers as the basis for student assignments. I have them correct those writing errors. To do so, they must learn why they are mistakes. https://t.co/pkmKYM62nl#sstlap
Im lucky to have great AP World and APUSH teachers. I focus on discussing types (explain, describe, etc), word choice and making connections/using evidence in AP Gov. #sstlap
A6) Part of my intro lessons is giving me a chance to see where Ss are in their writing so I can have an idea of how to help them get better (teach writing) as they also explore the content. #sstlap
A6 cont) In past, have had Ss say that I was harder on their writing than their English teachers. How many lessons have I done on it's/its, to/too/two, etc. :) #sstlap
A5: I have a pre-made list of comments I tend to give and check off both glows and grows that apply to their writing (and have space to customize). mass customized feedback! #sstlap
Yes! Love Auto Text Expander to help with this but it doesn't work on GDocs comments. Have heard different things about whether Permanent Clipboard does this. Anyone have something for that? #sstlap

A7: My favorite tools to practice these skills are using @flipgrid, socratic seminars, fishbowl discussions, #booksnaps, discussion boards, and visual document analysis. Here is my #cuerockstar presentation when I presented on this topic #sstlaphttps://t.co/dO7dOfc7I2
A6. ELA teachers and SocialStudies teachers only agree to some extent how to teach students to argue. MUCH disagreement. No wonder CB has different rubrics for the AP social studies and ELA classes. This must change, I think All should be on same page. #sstlap
A7: Here is a @Flipgrid topic I shared on group document analysis. I love this because I can assess a whole class in about 10 minutes of video versus reading 36 paragraphs. #sstlaphttps://t.co/Fq9OwSMRuY
A4 #sstlap depends on the kid/their mood/their understanding of the topic/their zodiac sign/the moon phase... I haven't found anything predictable to make all the juniors happy to write...yet #growthmindset
