#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.

#ALedchat excited to chat about data notebooks tonight. Flo middle has been on the journey for 3 years now..living and learning daily with our Falcon Playbooks
A1. We started with the end in mind wanting ss to monitor their progress with global scholars and keep their interest with charting data.. born was the Falcon Playbook #ALedchat
A1. I haven't used notebooks as a system....so I am guessing. A place to reflect on data. I am hoping they aren't a place to just hold data. I also hope they are digital and not a BIG binder! #Aledchat
What comes to mind is student ownership, knowledge about "where they are," student goals & improvement. What also comes to mind is how to get HS teachers to embrace this. #ALedchat
A1: Data notebooks can be used k/12 to give students concrete examples of where they are in the learning process as well as indicate mastery/nonmastery YET of standards. #aledchat
A1: When I hear that data notebooks are being used, my mind immediately goes to accountability and then to ownership. Our Ss use data notebooks to keep track of their progress on assessments, chart growth, set goals, etc. #ALedchat
A1) Student goal setting is a great way to use data notebooks but don’t stop there - make sure they make a specific plan to achieve that goal and then monitor their progress of their action steps. #ALedchat

Q2. John Hattie’s states “visible learning is when ts see learning through the eyes of their ss and ss see themselves as their own ts.” How does data notebooks give students a voice in their learning? How has the use of data notebooks fostered student ownership? #ALedchat
A1: Unfamiliar with this topic, but I think of a list of comprehensive data that shows progress over time, and where the strengths and weaknesses are. The word dat notebook makes me think of a huge binder of student data. #aledchat
Students understanding their data....to own the data they must understand it first! What they know and what they are stilling learning! I used them in my classroom, but as the instructional coach at my school we are using data sheets (bar graphs along with goals)! #ALedchat

Yes and after charting what happens or what do they do with the information? I am thinking a student sees I improved, stayed the same or regressed..now what? #Aledchat

I haven't seen data notebooks used in the classroom. What comes to my mind is a student's ability to monitor his or her progress toward goals. #aledchat
Q2. John Hattie’s states “visible learning is when ts see learning through the eyes of their ss and ss see themselves as their own ts.” How does data notebooks give students a voice in their learning? How has the use of data notebooks fostered student ownership? #ALedchat
A2: I don’t think that Ss look at the data enough. If Ss were to look at the data, they would take pride in strengths and want to improve weaknesses. We need to see more students involved in the process of analyzing data: They are a huge part of the equation. #aledchat
A2 Ss are able to see a concrete representation of their learning & progress.Their vested interest is greater than expressing an abstract number or letter https://t.co/Fi8lur25gh can explain what the graphs, charts, numbers mean in relation to growth. #ALedchat
A2. DNs allow ss to view their progress, set goals, and- with guidance from the T-devise plans for reaching those goals. By viewing their data frequently, ss are able to have discussions about their data with their T and with their Parents. #ALedchat
A1: Unfamiliar with this topic, but I think of a list of comprehensive data that shows progress over time, and where the strengths and weaknesses are. The word dat notebook makes me think of a huge binder of student data. #aledchat
A2) data notebooks help students track progress and own their learning. Having them lead a parent conference is powerful for both student and parent! #ALedchat
A2 Data notebooks allow for the students to have a visual representation. This is powerful when students can manipulate and add to the notebook, it puts part of the accountability on the students for their learning. #ALedchat
Q2. John Hattie’s states “visible learning is when ts see learning through the eyes of their ss and ss see themselves as their own ts.” How does data notebooks give students a voice in their learning? How has the use of data notebooks fostered student ownership? #ALedchat
A2: Students OWN the data. They are going to self reflect their progress and set goals to achieve more. It's no longer a grade a teacher "gave" them but insured one the EARNED #ALedchat
Here is a sample. They get assessed several times per standard and can do retakes. So they might have a lot of data. They graph it (by hand so they remember how to do it). @Jennifer_Hogan#ALedchat

Q3. Students can use data notebooks to communicate their learning strengths and areas of improvement to parents and teachers. Has anyone participated in or facilitated a student led conference? Thoughts? Experiences? Tips? #ALedchat
A2: With limited experience, I would conjecture that the data provided would give students a "real-time" glimpse into what they know, need to know, and what they need to work towards #ALedchat
#aledchat
A2: Ownership comes from Ss being aware of where they are in their learning progression. "I've mastered that now my goal is this." The real power comes from the internal motivation in Ss fostered by mastery experiences. #aledchat
A2: Data notebooks allow my Ss to see exactly what standards they haven't mastered yet. With the use of data notebooks, some of my Ss now ASK for homework that is specifically geared toward practice of their individual goal! They know what they need.
#ALedchat
My dream is a k-12 portfolio for each student! We plan to have our 7 graders continue with their current playbook as 8th graders rather than starting over. #ALedchat

A3: 🙋♀️Over here! I often fill in when students may not have a parent who can attend. Kids love telling their stories! I love asking them questions, bragging on them, encouraging them. Great practice of presentation & Professional skills. #ALedchat
Q3. Students can use data notebooks to communicate their learning strengths and areas of improvement to parents and teachers. Has anyone participated in or facilitated a student led conference? Thoughts? Experiences? Tips? #ALedchat
A3. @city_oxford has student led conferences 3x a year.(k-12) Ss communicate their progress and their goals to Ps. Even as young as K, Ss are taking ownership of their learning and are having powerful conversations with their Ps. It's been amazing! #ALedchat
I have participated in them at the elementary level however not at the high school level. Everything is amplified and spread out. Not sure how any teacher could hold 160+ conferences with sts and parents. Would love to know how other HS do this and set goals #Aledchat

A4. At P-T conferences, my Ss who came with parents used the tracking sheets to talk about what they knew/needed work on. That’s as close as I have come. #ALedchat

https://t.co/WdP0tTv1ZZ notebooks are the bees knees.Students take pride is showing what they have accomplished and the ownership of how they have progressed toward their own goal.Give Ss a clear understanding of where they are going.A must in turnaround school culture. #aledchat

A3: Years ago I was able to sit-in on student-led conferences at the middle school level; some were better than others of course, but that had a great deal to do with what preparation the teachers gave them prior to the meetings. #ALedchat
Q3. Students can use data notebooks to communicate their learning strengths and areas of improvement to parents and teachers. Has anyone participated in or facilitated a student led conference? Thoughts? Experiences? Tips? #ALedchat
A3: In Hoover, our students led their IEP meetings which held much of the same type of data. I have not seen a data notebook presentation before, but I would love to! #aledchat
Exactly! It is free, transferable, and easy to use. It could be shared with teachers each year so they had access to the previous years' information...... #ALedchat

A3: YES! Love the engagement of student led conference. This can be done much like peer mediated learning in groups or with https://t.co/mhRH1UAncZ will hold each other accountable AND work cooperative to help peers reach mastery. #ALedchat
Do they have the opportunity to request to be reassessed over the standards they haven't mastered? Do you create custom assessments for standards or give a different version of the original assessment with multiple standards? Can they retest as many times as they want? #Aledchat
A3. Watched my 3rd grader present her data last year, complete with standard mastery discussion and personal goals for annual growth. Amazing stuff! #ALedchat
Q3. Students can use data notebooks to communicate their learning strengths and areas of improvement to parents and teachers. Has anyone participated in or facilitated a student led conference? Thoughts? Experiences? Tips? #ALedchat
A4: We are in the early stages of going District wide with data notebooks. We currently are paper but are in transition to digital so that the DN can follow a student and become a portfolio after graduation #ALedchat
A4. Officially no. I use the sheets and have them do any graphing by hand. Since I teach science, it’s practice for lab data. Tech makes things more efficient but at the cost of looking and it and interacting with the data. #ALedchat
A4: It’s much easier to store and keep track of a digital document. Student data can be accessed across grade levels and across schools. Binders would need to be physically passed on. That’s a lot of storage room with a lot of paper. Cluncky and inefficient. #aledchat
#ALedchat A4. One issue with digital- students making multiple copies of data notebooks! We had to teach them how to organize and use their Google drives correctly!
They can reassess..yes. I usually require two forms of mastery "evidence". This may mean IXL medals, homework sheets done independently, class assignments, formative assessments(@quizziz_dot_com, etc). They have multiple choices to gain mastery of the standard. #ALedchat
I have the same vision. I like binders and paper for DNs, but I think digital portfolios are the answer in order to carry them from grade to grade. Think...seniors would be able to go back and listen to themselves learning to read when they were in 1st grade. #aledchat
A3 There are so many levels in which this works. Student led peer to peer. Student to teacher, student to parent. With access to free EdTech apps, the possibilities of implementation are endless. #ALedchat
A4: digital is great for the ease of data sharing.Personally, I like to use a combination of digital and actual notebooks bc in this digital age, the tangible graphs, charts, handwritten goals are very personal and affective. #ALedchat
A5: Personal goal setting, academic goals, attendance and discipline. Our students report of this data to their parents during their student led conferences. The upper grades (2nd-4th) dues google sites to document and record and k-1 use another format. #ALedchat
A5: Have seen student summative academics more than formative. Form. had to be the focus though. It's the journey and not the destination that matters in day to day operations. Attendance is also in DNs. It awakens Ss to how grades & attendence correlate. #ALedchat

This is my fourth year using data notebooks. I tweak it each year. It does get easier to manage! It's a process that's for sure! It's really amazing what my Ss are able to do. They are able to set their own goals and provide evidence, which makes my job much easier. #ALedchat
Q6. Data notebooks guide students in monitoring their own progress...What supports are needed for parents so they understand the importance of students’ data notebooks? #ALedchat
A5:Gen ed-class/individual SMART goals with baseline & BM data including BM goals. In indivual data notebooks IEP goals are treated like other SMART goals with PM data for both academic & transitions goals.Attendance is part of data and tracked in notebook. 1/2 #ALedchat
#ALedchat During the reflection piece ts can have conversations with students to reinforce academic language the answer "study more" isn't a reflection
A5: Very important for students to see the whole picture. Grades, behavior, attendance, reading level, test data. That data jumps off the page and shows students a clear picture of where to improve. Students aren’t always aware of these things, and need a reminder. #aledchat
A6. Communication. Parents need to be aware of who that notebooks function and what the information means. Make a video to email home explaining how things work and follow up on any questions. #ALedchat
Q6. Data notebooks guide students in monitoring their own progress...What supports are needed for parents so they understand the importance of students’ data notebooks? #ALedchat
Do you use a universal screener or district benchmark? Is the data easily shared and manipulated? One problem we have is that assessment data and growth ONLY comes through in pdf form and sts can't see it. Teachers have to share it. #Aledchat
A6: I would think that parents would need to be a part of the process. See the notebooks at beginning to see what data was included and then have a student led conference at some point for students to share data. #aledchat
A6: Parents need to know what DNs are all about. Parent nights, podcasts, etc. could be utilized to introduce them. DNs could be a focus for conference night. And ideally it seems like a good idea to showcase DNs at least once each semester #ALedchat
A6-we have to recognize that that a lot of parents will do what is asked....but they have to be asked. We sometimes assume the worst instead of expecting the best. #ALedchat
#ALedchat During the reflection piece ts can have conversations with students to reinforce academic language the answer "study more" isn't a reflection
A5: SMART Goal-where you are going, Baseline-where you started. BM goals-checkpoint goals (refuel to reteach if needed) and PM data- actual mileage. Charts/graphs, etc make excellent visual "roadmaps" and don't forget BM reward activities! 2/2 #ALedchat
A6: I would think that parents would need to be a part of the process. See the notebooks at beginning to see what data was included and then have a student led conference at some point for students to share data. #aledchat
A6: Parents need to feel welcome in the school. Once there, a clear mission statement shows them what’s valued by the school. That mission needs to be constantly communicated with parents. Parents won’t buy in to the data if they don’t understand its significance. #aledchat
#ALedchat we started with monitoring grades and global scholars data so we could all speak the same language. Today students checked their growth targets to have a goal in mind for the upcoming tests.
A6: It's important for parents to understand the measures and data from the assessments, so it is up to the school to provide explanations and training. We've had these type sessions where we explain what the measures mean. If they don't know, they can't help!! #ALedchat
Q6. Data notebooks guide students in monitoring their own progress...What supports are needed for parents so they understand the importance of students’ data notebooks? #ALedchat
Data notebooks are a great tool for students to progress monitor their learning. Putting the data into a short presentation would provide evidence of their learning. #ALedchat
A6: I would think that parents would need to be a part of the process. See the notebooks at beginning to see what data was included and then have a student led conference at some point for students to share data. #aledchat
No, we don't. As a Universal Screener we use Ren 360. Reports download as pdf. There is the ability to do a big download into excel but not individual reports. And students can not access their own scores. I think we need to push for both! #ALEdChat
A6: Parents need to understand what is being measured so they can be a valuable stakeholder in what is being monitored.Especially with standards-based mastery data, parents will need Ts to clearly explain the expectations & process. #aledchat
Q6. Data notebooks guide students in monitoring their own progress...What supports are needed for parents so they understand the importance of students’ data notebooks? #ALedchat
#ALedchat we started with monitoring grades and global scholars data so we could all speak the same language. Today students checked their growth targets to have a goal in mind for the upcoming tests.
Parents don’t know educational lingo. We need to explain the data sources & their purposes in real, relatable ways. We need a simple common language. #ALedchat
Q6. Data notebooks guide students in monitoring their own progress...What supports are needed for parents so they understand the importance of students’ data notebooks? #ALedchat
A7: I think the notebooks have to be organized and Ts need to feel comfortable and confifent with the process. They must value the process or it can become “one more thing to do”. #aledchat
A7: Use the data instead of letting it sit on a shelf. We must start looking at where the data says we need to improve. If we don’t use the data to direct our classroom, what’s the point? We would have just wasted all that time and resources analyzing it. #aledchat
A7: I think the key is student ownership. When students own the process, teachers can just facilitate and they will reap the benefits of the Data being meaningful. The more they use Data with students, the better it will be. #ALedchat
A7Start w/meaningful PD w/lots of examples of how highly effective instruction is data-driven&student-owned.These are THE tools that turn around failing schools.Daily data tracking should be as ubiquitous Do Nows(which, btw, should be a formative assessment of prior day) #aledchat
I think it would be essential for these to be accessible by all teachers of the students. In isolation, I can see where these would be hard to use effectively. #ALedchat
#Aledchat
A:7 I think it is a process. Baby steps. You start with simple goal setting and data tracking. Then, move a little deeper. It can be overwhelming if you try to do it all at once.
Thank you @DrJimmyShaw & @mzbowlin11 for your leadership tonight and the awesome topic! I will definitely be going back over the feed tomorrow! #ALedchat
FA: Looking at ways to make students more involved in analyzing data. Also, learning more about student-led conferences and how to incorporate those into the school. #aledchat
@mzbowlin11#studentdatanitebooks are just one piece of the data puzzle. I love knowing that this practice is being done here. So many things to analyzed for building a better future by investing our talent in our students' success. #aledchat
