We are not going to be using the Q and A form tonight. Tonight, let’s just chat about integrating specials. #isedchat

I think for integration to occur planning times must be arranged for teacher to teacher conversations. #isedchat

I would 100% agree. Our struggle is that we our specials teacher teach across divisions. So how do we plan to have those conversations? #isedchat

I have tried at pre and post planning times and at faculty meetings to do team ups. #isedchat

Another part is buy in. I have some specials teachers who want to collaborate and those who are more like boulders than rivers. #isedchat

I have done everything from finding common time to coming in early, taking a different lunch duty, staying late, etc. to try to find those common times. #isedchat

Sometimes admins need to do a bit of encouragement & maybe facilitate with an idea. #isedchat

What are some ways you have integrated with your specials teachers? #isedchat
    In reply to @swladis
  • swladis Jan 3 @ 9:15 PM EST
Art teachers are often on board to integrating. One art teacher asked for updates on curriculum & would coordinate art lessons with the curriculum. Shape exploration with geometry, looking at art work with fractions in mind. #isedchat

Our Middle School Art teacher does these things as well. Does the math teacher integrate art into their lessons too? #isedchat

Could you expand a bit more? #isedchat
    In reply to @swladis
  • swladis Jan 3 @ 9:20 PM EST
Having kids use fitbits to record steps and heart rate and then the math teacher has the kids use as data in graphing lessons. #isedchat

100%!! I have kids that struggle with transference of skills from one subject to the next. Doing more integration is helpful for them. #isedchat

My struggle is getting the core teachers to buy into integration. Many of them don’t see the value I think. #isedchat

In 5th grade, they used to do something called Innovation Alley where they traced an invention throughout time that had a positive impact on man kind. This year, I think I am going to have them invite something to solve one of the UN Challenges. #isedchat

Hope you don’t mind if I take the invention idea and suggest it to some of the schools I consult with. That one resonated with me. #isedchat
