I am not sure if it is a right? I think if we give so freely, it is taking for granted.
Now — Topic: As advocate for student voice what do you tell colleagues to get them to allow more student voice in their classrooms?
I would have to agree! We have a buddy bench at our school district and our student love it!
Good evening Jon... welcome to
Allow students to express their ideas and opinions without feeling that there is a right or wrong answer.
Always impt to remember we teach students, not textbooks. When Ss connect to content by having choice & voice, they see purpose.
Hi Everyone! Kathy from ct grade 3
I try to give them resources & examples of those providing S voice. Will be sharing by with my Ts.
This is my first time in the . Excited to learn more!
Showing students that their voice means something in their classroom!
Good Evening from North Jersey!
What a great way for students to meet new people. This is a great solutions to one of the major problems in our schools.
Stdnt voice is so far afield of the control & compliance of 20th century education it needs strong advocates if it is to be accepted
Being an advocate for teaching and learning
Advocating for and teaching students to advocate for themselves - great resources!
Hey everyone..excited to be a part of tonight
Right on Heather... and BTW, welcome to
To have a circle time for students to have a heart to heart conversation. Really makes me listen to them.
Hello! Dean from Central Nebraska! First time on Looking to learn!
TED_ED: Thanks to kathleenharsy for co-hosting! Check this TED_Ed Lesson using this week's talk: https://t.co/JEQ7PhIXAd
I give them an example of what S voice would look like. Every T I've done this with has been excited at trying it.
There you go Amanda, nailed it!
Sarah, 8th grade math and English, first time participating. Excited to be here!
and how might you help hat to happen, example please?
I would have to agree with you, Diana! This allows the students time to express themselves freely!
Ask students to evaluate their own learning. "What did you do? How? Why did you do it this way"
First time on ! Joining from Houston, Texas!
A1 If you want to see your students grow, encourage discussion, quiet time to reflect, don't be afraid to challenge your ss
I'm sorry! I missed the question.
In my classroom, students often vote on big changes. For example, each time we change seating arrangement they vote on the design
I think sharing examples of how you use student choice successfully is the most motivating!
Thanks Kay... Student Voice, how so?
I give them an example of what S voice would look like. Every T I've done this with has been excited to try it.

Hello from Lincoln, Neb. First time here!
Being an advocate for student voice should be easy for teachers who have strived to get their voice heard in their own profession.
1st grade teacher from central Nebraska!
Sped teacher here to join the chat!
I would provide a lot of more peer based classroom disucssions let them learn from one another and get ideas

Joining from central Nebraska 1st timer. I think giving students choices within a perimeter is key.

As a SPED teacher I try getting my students to self-advocate for themselves! I wish I could help them forever!
Happy Tuesday! Allyson, elem print from MI
4th grade teacher from Beatrice, NE
Allow different ways for students to communicate!
How often do you change seating arrangements?
It's sad that the idea of S voice has to be encouraged and isn't expected or there already https://t.co/T0TuKQ3BK8
I give them an example of what S voice would look like. Every T I've done this with has been excited to try it.
Hi kay! Hello from Lincoln, Neb. First time here!
We also use "respect circles" to discuss projects or issues in the classroom. Each student has the chance to be heard.
Hi Chadlee --- welcome to
Giving students an opportunity to participate is so important. The more opportunities the better.
Get to know students outside of class so they feel more comfortable opening up and sharing.
yes! Yes! Yes! Casandra is here... Welcome to

Industrial Tech Teacher Nebraska
looking forward to in our student empowerment initiative. Providing guidance and opportunity
The more students have a voice, the more engaged they are, the more they learn
I teach 1st grade and don't change seating very often. Once a quarter.
Listen to Mark... Mark is on the Mark...
Guiding them in the right direction and helping them understand the importance of being self-advocators!
I think most Ts want to have S voice in their classrooms, but may need help doing it or need examples.
I like that name, we just say classroom meeting.
I like to change my seating arrangement quite often. Gets them out of their"comfort zone" which we all need!
New ideas like student voice in education have more enemies than friends. Advocacy by teachers is necessary for success.
Thanks Justin ---please tell folks about 'respect' circles
A1 Let students pick their project topics. They get excited about a class when they get to choose the details of what they learn
Welcome Amy ... tanks for joining
As says, "The ones doing the talking are the ones doing the learning." Ts must encourage Ss voices so they learn!
Ask students, "How would you like to learn ___? What will make you curious and make learning fun?"
so... is free flowing... jump in...
A1 I'm at point where they can start choosing some activities now.
LOOKING FORWARD TO CONNECTING with PLN peeps at in Atlanta this weekend. Any meet ups?
With our 6 week changeovers, we move frequently. Yet, even daily we create new groups
Agree. And we need to explain/model student voice for those students trapped mid-cycle https://t.co/e0NNETXowa
Stdnt voice is so far afield of the control & compliance of 20th century education it needs strong advocates if it is to be accepted
I agree with The more you see your students outside of school the better. It shows that you care.
so true... how'd we get so messed up...
Have to LISTEN to students in order for them to have a voice. Give them an audience. https://t.co/CFjoo2fKuS

NOW — Topic: As advocate for student voice what do you tell colleagues to get them to allow more student voice in their classrooms?
Give a student 7 minutes to talk about anything can help student/teacher relationships.
is my favorite way to give voice to Ss and I NEVER have discipline problems then.
. Right. Enemies like Pearson, because they haven't created a workbook or a test for student voice yet.
I also like to switch up my seating arrangements quite often.
Ss are the ones learning, let them speak. We know YOU know it, but let's see what the STUDENTS know (need to talk!)
What about kids that are shy and don't like to speak up in class?
Traditional schooling is not typically condusive to student voice. You have to be willing to change how you do things.
Welding Instructor, Gretna Nebraska.
Agreed. I think Ts want it they just don't know how to go about implementing & they don't know what they don't know
Encouraging S voice comes with a responsibility 2 listen 2 what Ss are saying = action to support learning & growth
In our respect circles TSW get a chance to express what is going well, what needs to change, or fresh ideas they may have
paraphrasing quote: When you talk, you show what you know - when you listen, you learn something new -- let Ss TALK to SHOW...
I like to switch it up every month as well.
education student at the University of Wyoming
Bob, MS Prin from southern Maine
Reminds me of "Hacking Assessment" Interview students to see how they feel about learning
When we complete the sponge I use a talking ball! I always pick someone new giving everyone a chance to talk in my class.
This is a great idea! How do you fit that into your schedule?
Start with empowering students to ask a very simple question:
"I wonder..."
I love it! Try it again. It is really magical

Welcome to Y'all met each other?
A2 Are you teaching to a test or to a S? You're teaching to a s. They're full of curiosity, encourage it. They'll help guide you
I feel like I have to have it more structured, but also feel that took away from what it was supposed to be.
Does anyone have good websites that they use in their classrooms?
I just try to fit in as much as I can. It makes a difference.
I love using clockpartners to bring in new groups daily! https://t.co/ZeIAhw3RLZ
With our 6 week changeovers, we move frequently. Yet, even daily we create new groups
A good way to introduce student voice is through opening up your class expectations/rules for debate and discussion.
Trying to keep up. I see A1s and A2s. Where are questions?
Do they need to 'speak up' 2 have a voice? they can share with one other, or write, record audio, draw....
I try to find some recess time when I don't have duty.
Encourage teacher to offer more opportunities to share out and build executive skills.
TOO often in too many classrooms 'student voice' is near death, on life support...bring it back, nurture
Stdnt voice requires that teachers respect the ideas of kids & relinquishing some control. That is a difficult concept for some.

Thanks I'll give that a try!
Tell colleagues that S voice comes when students are empowered. When S are empowered there are less behavior issues...Win-Win!

TOO often in too many classrooms 'student voice' is near death, on life support...bring it back, nurture
Do you have a voice in your school building? If not, then it is not surprising if you can't figure out how to implement student voice
What are some ways that your classroom rules/expectations change after classroom discussions and debates?
Do you think all the testing has taken away the student's voice?

Student voice is important & offers opportunities to explore perspective/audience.
A voice goes a long way...being proactive and empowered https://t.co/gcEtDfFDF9
I think the best way to give students a voice is to allow them to have some control over their education.
Ts must plan for S voices to be present more than T voice Those doing the speaking, reading writing are doing the learning
Student voice is a cultural indicator of of seeing students as valuable members.
Brilliant idea! It was just hard to implement. There was no motivation.
Hit me up if you have questions!
Thanks. I have two devices going!!
Yes, this is the point when it becomes about the 'learning' & not the 'teaching' hence about S not T
brilliant! but sad you have to go to such lengths to find a 'moment'
Ss teach each other, here is our second podcast, character lessons in 2 min. Super easy and they LoVE it! https://t.co/Lr7PUIFZji
I agree. I think kids learn better when their opinions are valued & they have power in their own learning.
so, must a student speak in order to have voice?
a good way to get students to speak up is make the classroom environment comfortable, encourage all the answers students give.
Katie Mason, 3rd grade teacher in Nebraska
English/language arts Ts, ever taught the book Rules by Cythia Lord? About to plan a 10-day unit for 6th graders!
they prefer to focus more on what they can or should do than on negatives.
Wonder if this applies to teachers too? Letting students sink doesn’t teach them to swim. https://t.co/tIXxTrmwEG ...
What about other areas for encouraging Ss voice? Not just in their learning choices or spatial or rules?
ELA T 's Ss are doing Curiosity Studies. Ss to explore ideas they are curious to know more abt. Research & writing skills!
I started this year! One of the best things I have ever done, next to and
A fine example of PLN Power in action happening here -
Who will be those advocates? And what will be the consequences? Integrity can be expensive.
I don't think so just have to receive their input in some way.
I believe it is very hard to have a voice at my school. Sad.
Just saw this picture earlier today. Maybe it encourages kids to include those on the bench?
I agree it is sad we have to find the "small moments" to talk!
How old are the kids you have? We use
In 1st grade I hear their voices during unstructured time more so than a structured lesson.
Letting students "idea dump" is not giving them a voice. Teachers have to run with those ideas and help them come alive.
What about hearing Ss voice in th ear work? In their writing, in their presentations?
It's always important to remind S there's no such thing as a stupid question or a stupid answer. Just try
Great question. Love to see how people answer
Sometimes it can be as easy as "What do you think about...? Turn and talk with a neighbor."
IMO S need vehicle 2 a able to express thought, ideas & possibilities -differentiated modes
Create meaningful learning is by instilling students with a guide by the side learning
Sounds like a great way to hear your students' voices!
Agreed. I think a classroom has to be welcoming. Teachers have to show they care and the students will succeed.
That is sad, but one person CAN make a huge difference and be a model https://t.co/EgAcozROdk
I believe it is very hard to have a voice at my school. Sad.
Her students are fortunate ->
I believe it puts more pressure on T which can have an affect on S if allowed to. We must adapt to the change
I have no answers to those questions. I would like to think some folks will stand up.
Giving students a voice in determining the class culture (read: rules) can also be very effective if done right.
It's so exciting that there are blogging opportunities & platforms out there for younger Ss.
I feel like students can learn as much from their peers as they can from us as teachers!
& time, with peers & adult who will listen, discuss & support start small - it is worth it
I agree. Ts are having to do a lot of adjusting. And that's GREAT!!! https://t.co/Y4RbF1mxwI
I believe it puts more pressure on T which can have an affect on S if allowed to. We must adapt to the change
Right now blogging within the class. Over 700 comments though
What if we ask students what makes them feel like they have a voice in learning?
presentations offer a great variety of ways for students to personalize their learning!
I pitched a TEDx talk about "Inspiring Teenage Poetic Voice" Want to get the visceral experiences from students?
making their feelings and opinions feel valued is important in building relationships with kids
I do that when I ask a question and only a few people know. I allow students to talk & learn from each other.
More eyes than just yours! Gives them the feeling of authentic audience! Important to share.
Think about this, sometimes VOICE isn't really voice...
It is also important to teach that sometimes student voice has to take a back seat to community needs.
Is anyone here familiar with Carol Dweck, and "The Power of Yet". It encourages kids not to give up if they haven't reached a goal.
They don't have to always talk in class. We will be making iMovies in class and they will share their voice through their creativity
Love her! https://t.co/DumZJhP6IO

Honestly, what great prep for the volume of typing on the SBAC test too!
A2 there are many ways to have a voice. Collaboration, projects, any way to express themselves
I hope not, or our introverted, shy, & ELL kids wouldn't be heard. :(
interested to find out how intelligently students can voice their wants i.e. how they'd prefer to demo
Whether or not a student speaks their presence in the classroom is a voice.
This is a great idea! https://t.co/pqej5CNqA1
They don't have to always talk in class. We will be making iMovies in class and they will share their voice through their creativity
That's the EMPATHY phase of ! My Ss love it
Our principal has given us a few tips from her. It is quite powerful!
One thing my students enjoy is being the "teacher." I allow them to help their peers and "teach" them when they struggle!
In the old days,it was the union. Ss & tchrs gave up their voices as an EXCHANGE for prosperity. Social Contract is dead
In everyone of my classes, they choose platform and how to meet the goals (also set goals in most instances).
It also allows students to really "show they know" the content! They feel do proud!
Like anything it is important for Ts to model how to have a voice.
My first graders love helping their peers!
Great way to see how well they really understand!
agreed. That is why my classroom always seems to be buzzing.
THANKS Important insight...
So awesome to have Ss show what they know. https://t.co/WAJIZLU9uT
They don't have to always talk in class. We will be making iMovies in class and they will share their voice through their creativity
B) Relationships need 2b built so Ss feel confident their voice will be heard.
I have learned it first hand. Lost contracts.
My student love working with partners as they work on their lab work
I'd like to think that is what we do every day we give Ss voice & choice in their learning.
Yes! Love this, and use it with my Ss and own children all the time!
I agree and it helps boost their confidence. I've also learned some kids learn better from their peers.
It's important to get Ss involved in making their rubrics. There's voice in that, too
YET another excellent example of PLN Power in action happening here ->
The room is smarter than any one of us. It takes a village to make sure the village is learning.
That is so true. When Ss help create the rubrics, they have more buy in.

I like how you give S a voice by letting choose the welds they want to work on
wow...you're rocking it tonight! Keep going!
If school is about the learning & the Ss have common language 2 express it - the Ts have 2 understand there is a shift happening
. That's great! I often do it b4 "opening the floor." Then ask Ss to share what they heard instead of what they said.
I agree that if we can get Ss to be involved in how they will be assessed they will be more invested.
When you give Ss a voice, it may seem hard, but it makes T's job easier, I think
iMovies, voice threads, etc. such great ways for Ss to express themselves.
GOLD STARS for the entire team!
Choice= a new concept.Tchr has to move from soliloquizing authority to resource & guide. .
I hate to beat a dead horse but how many more 's w/o actual student participants? How else to collect/showcase feedback...

Many paths to the mountaintop...
Standardized tests are only a tool to use in reflection in your teaching...connect to the real world
I use journals/idea books to help my students get their ideas/thoughts in order
Could not agree more! Often a frustration!
yes think about discussions are they S led or T driven? is there a difference?
Probably longer than that.
I love giving my Ss the opportunity to choose their path on how they want to portray the concept taught.
I'm listening, watching, feeling, etc...words that empower voice ->
A student can have a voice through their projects. So they would not need to speak.
My S get to bring in their own projects to work on and they really do well because of the ownership.
Even my first graders love to journal to express their thoughts.
I love doing Socratic seminars for this reason. All S led! https://t.co/cCwMxFHclS

a mountain top that moves at every bend in the path can provide motivation
Most times when S's have more control they far exceed any expectations I would have set for them!
When Ss gain voice, they gain intrinsic motivation. Intrinsically motivated Ss make our jobs much easier https://t.co/lVcIAnrMYW
When you give Ss a voice, it may seem hard, but it makes T's job easier, I think
Teachers who see themselves as learner understand the imprtnce & need for stu voice better than those who see themselves as expert.

The 'rhetomatic' = teaching rhetorical analysis through structured inquiry. Very cool stuff.
I also think it's hard to talk about S voice w/o talking choice. Allowing choice tells Ss that T hears & appreciates their voice.
I took the writing center away this year, definitely putting it back next year-bad mistake!
Completely agree! Why wouldn't we want our jobs to be easier?!
I allow Ss to have post-its @ the desks in case they have a question in the middle of a lesson 2 write it down & ask later.
again S voice in different modes Ss at all ages have voice -do Ts listen? how is it connected 2 learning?
"Be the change you wish to see in the world." 😊
And that is learning. Engaged Ss, owning their learning, choice creation, and exceeding expectations.
work at a Title I, ELL school...diversity enhances learning for all Ss
I have one S who is on twitter & actively participates through liking & retweeting posts about ed. Its cool.
Working daily in small groups will help them to their for resolving conflict, defending a point of view.

Voice is just so important. Ss who feel they are valued work harder
That's an excellent habit to encourage. Many people sit and ignore everything else until their question is answered
When I taught HS I had kids join chats ... offered keen insight. most of My MS kids arent using Twitter
we do a lot of small group activities. Being a co-teacher it makes it easy to split the groups up into smaller halves.
Heading out! Thanks for a great topic ! Student centered classrooms MUST have Student Voice! Focus on Learning
agreed! Too often we expect kids can be vulnerable in learning but haven't changed culture/supported them enough to
Is there You and ME in VOICE? I think not...
Ss expectations of themselves change when they have freedom 2 choose & Ts learn who they R as learners
That is true, but integrity is not as expensive as an undereducated, unprepared generation of Ss.
A6 I use the redcat pod speakers and have trained the kids to know the difference between academic/chit-chat talk. The Ts asst. also
I think that this is an important skill for students to have. Small groups would be most effective
Thanks for Rocking it Jonathon...
Yes & T voice typically isn't modeled in PD, which should make it more obvious to Ts it needs to happen w/ Ss.
My son had to create a fierce wondering journal in 3rd grade. He still writes in it and is now 16.
true, the thought of a new procedure this time of year, but they are almost a year older.
I have a 'Parking Lot' that students stick there questions on!
I need to start doing this every Tuesday!
Love watching others teach! https://t.co/b2p37Ra5bQ
When was the last time you asked a colleague to visit their classroom & observe them while they were teaching?
https://t.co/h6bMowZ09g is a great website for state testing prep or for intervention. My district uses it & we love it.
Spread the word; 2 plus 2 = 5
Use quick strategies like a 1 min checkin at a table where Ss ask peers ?s or add comments thru lessons, encourages engagement
Let's be honest, why would kids want to join in the conversation ... do they feel it matters to them? Does it make a difference?
I also use Math groups. It's great to see students work together and problem solve together. https://t.co/y8jYOAcCy3

Good point. I have my students come up with their own questions before the Socratic seminar. https://t.co/5yOtFzHqj3
Definitely a great way to connect, learn, and be pushed in your thinking!
Is this an area in the classroom? Does this interrupt your lesson @ all, as this would be a worry for my Ss.
Prime example of students voice in the classroom.
Need to know, want to know, desire to understand...motivate students to desire
Talking student voice ... do your students feel like YOU have their back? Do they trust you? ... really trust you?
Our seating arrangement is just to take role after that we are out working in lab
By getting students to ask questions we are really encouraging them to think on their own.
It depends on the
qs,S are in groups, if a teammate can answer I will allows S to S explanation.
Student voice requires: safe space to be vulnerable, a culture that values the individual, and a community willing to listen.
It is powerful for Ts to observe peers teaching. We have so much to learn from one another.
Sneed time 2 write, talk&share ideas, thinking, understanding, build ashared language of learning,S with personal focus make progress
Thanks Chadalee... How's that working for you?
I like to believe mine do. Our class is and they chose it.
prof. used this in a grad class. Worked really well to address S voice in class & easy! https://t.co/ZwwontHbw5

Student voice requires: safe space to be vulnerable, a culture that values the individual, and a community willing to listen.
is it even possible? Or do structures inherently put us in a position of mistrust?
I take time after the lesson to answer. If I can't, I start off the next day with them.
so Dennis... on a scale of 1-10 (10 being high) what's the overall rating of VOICE in most schools?
discuss it with them- do they see value & purpose, let them drive the 'procedure' =voice & ownership
Really great! The Ss love that they have people to fall back on. I also use it for when they have ?s
When was the last time you fought for something the students wanted, but other teachers/admin were against?
I have a poster sized post-it note and it is just stuck on my bulletin board, I haven't had any problems.
We usually do the same. I researched different arrangements online to have a variety of pod designs https://t.co/GXrGxWlsyO
I have kept my seating arrangements the same this semester to promote collaboration. They are in pods.
I just sent out an email a month ago asking to observe for my own learning.
In the 3 schls I'm in we do none of that It has been 1 of my focuses for change this yr. Failing forward so far :/
Immigration rules in force next month mean non-EU teachers must earn £35,000 to remain in the UK https://t.co/ZeHirITNVe
Creating opportunities for Ss to investigate helps them ask questions and want to discover answers.
Daily https://t.co/TehsKx82uG
When was the last time you fought for something the students wanted, but other teachers/admin were against?
try having 2 minutes at the end of a lesson or mid lesson to see if Ss can answer, empowers &gives voice
Voice is more than asking them what kind of project they would like to do ... it is advocating with them
The voice (and tone) we use can be the difference between a good day and a bad day for some students.
Might have to give that a try too. Always open to new ideas/strategies as a 2nd year teacher!
Students need that safe space! They can't find their voice without it.
How many arrangements were there? I have them in 4 desk groups.
Absolutely. Honestly, sometimes I need to heck myself!
I really love it, it gives shy students a voice too!
Real Voice ... 3 ... We "listen" and pretend action 6
I would have to agree with this! Using a certain tone with a student can make or break a day.

I never knew how much I could gain from twitter! I used to use it just for Nebraska athletic updates!
Not to be a naysayer, but if you have assigned seats for your kids ... are you listening to student voice?
Ts will also include their reflections on their GH in written docs & at EOY conferences.
gah!! I love it!! Middle schoolers would think that is hilarious!!
What a question? Is it possible to get away from standardized tests in the context of ind. learning?
I usually try without it. If they lose the privilege I assign the seats!

Students are always more interested when it is something realworld, or something they are interested in.
so when do we teach them responsibility for their actions?
Do you say the Ss name or just read the question then answer it? Because some Ss are shy/embarrassed.

Let us know how it goes - brave risktaking for Ts as well

We have ZERO recess or breaks ... 25 minute lunch inside ...
S voice is more than talking & asking ?s - it's about having a say in what/how they learn & how their learning community operates
Yes. Another quick option is a turn and talk let them discuss about a topic of their choice maybe document/maybe not
you are kidding me. Can you use
Thanks for a great first ! Might have to do another :)
Not only learning but making mistakes 2. I tell my Ss its ok to be wrong as long as you try & learn from it.
