#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

Steve from Melbourne. What about the old Tamagotchi? How good were they! Or Snake or Snake 2 on a 5110 phone?
Hi everyone. I remember when a 386SX computer arrived at my house. It had a turbo button and I still don't know what it did.
Oh no! I'd have been devastated too. Thankfully I've still got mine... somewhere!
We had a Commodore 64 too - it used to take sooooo long to load a game.
I remember having to plug my Gameboy into a friend's so we could evolve special Pokemon. It was the best!
Many small people, who in many small places, do many small things, that can alter the world https://t.co/VUsN86LvoL

My friend had an Artari, we played many hours on Pitfall and Asteroids.
1: The digital classroom is more connected world wide. Knowledge is at our fingertips. The list is endless https://t.co/OaBVIHYYUU
Hi Nina, gameboy as a child and now PokemonGo?
A1 digital classroom allows Ss to find info when they need it & at the level it is needed provides different ways to collaborate
A1. The digital classroom is more easily shared, able to connect further afield, & filled with access to a wider range of ideas
yes, I had to coerce my brother (he had the blue game)!
A1 In trad classroom, if a student asks a Q & you don't know the answer, that's the end. In digital class, that's the beginning.
Hi from the Gold Coast. I did programming on cards - sent them away and waited weeks to see if my program worked
A1: It should be more connected, more opportunities to branch out of the confines of four walls, desks and books.
Terje from Estonia. Grew up in Soviet Union, not much tech, no phone in my family, TV was B&W
I'm waiting for the Haka 😃
A1, it allows Ss greater levels of participation and collaboration within the lesson and outside the lesson
A1: Access: to knowledge, people and tools which allow new ways to invent, create and learn
A2 The digital classroom offers global connections as a way to deepen learning.
A1) In the DC the starting point is further along. You are not expecting Ss to do what devices do so they can explore further
or maybe the tech was the new pop up toaster we got. Chrome and so shiny and lasted for years.
A1: I think the digital classroom is set up for learning as opposed to teaching. Infrastructure matters more now than in the past.
Hi there. Jack from Melbourne. Fav tech was the Nintendo64
A1: Global connectedness is today's reality...the world is a smaller place...consider our Twitter chat today! 😊
My friends would come over and after 5hours get to watch their name repeat on screen, good times! 😂😂
A1. No longer teach content, teach how to find content needed to solve the problems of individual learning.
Hey there Terry. Congrats again on your award this week :)
Avocado green! So stylish 😊
. A1.Ss are more independent, engaged motivated & set own goals of what they can achieve& where to next ( with guidance if young)
so true - try explaining Eurovision without an iPad!
GameBoy yes, but I’ve been trying very hard to NOT install PokemonGo. Still successful 😁
Black and White is the epitome of digital
A1 - the greatest diff. that comes to mind is digital c/room not restricted/bounded by four walls for immediate learning/sharing
An Atari what I can remember being in my grandmother's basement.
digital classroom allows teachers to change from guru to facilitator of learning
A1: It should mean content is no longer the pinnacle, application of content, and sharing of knowledge instead
A1: More potential to go beyond classroom walls w/ digital. Increased need for T planning and "withitness"
I wasted hours of my youth doing this.
On or off. Toasters are digital
A1 Technology rich classrooms should be as different from the traditional classrooms, as those that use play-based approaches.
I had one of them as my first computer with 80mb HDD
we learnt how to program using Pascal - also learnt how to touch type at the same time
A1. the digital classroom opens its Windows to the world and makes connections outside the classroom.
A1 more possibilities, connections and flexibility.
Love this!! That Ss are know the experts in some areas https://t.co/NjJQY0Kwxl
digital classroom allows teachers to change from guru to facilitator of learning
Hi Jackie in Brisbane... introduction of colour TV!!
And collaboration begins 😊
A1 endless possibilities and opportunities. Preparing our students for their future
Not wasted. That manual dexterity is a legitimate life skill (can you tell I'm self-justifying here)
A1: Enormous possibilities for learning engagement locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Technology has an important place in schools, no doubt, but face to face learning is also vital. Can technology be overused?
A1 .2. nbAlaso Ss can make more connections esp globally & through many different ways eg Skype twitter google etc
A1 breaks down barriers between walls and communities close by and far away
Show me what you’ve learned, don’t just tell me!
I just had to google it to make sure i wasn't making it up. apparently turbo slowed it down! https://t.co/l35c4HL3Pu
A1: another workflow, more collaboration, connected to the world
A1 - A digital classroom allows for Ss to learn at their own pace and also learn what they want with Ts to support and encourage
A1 Simply put: more options, easier access to information, chance for better learning
A1 digital classroom allows for dynamic and efficient explanations and demonstrations of concepts
A1 The digital classroom can offer a myriad of possibilities for creativity, access, self-expression and creativity.
A1 It goes beyond the walls and the teacher's knowledge
A1 It should be clearly evident that technology rich classrooms offer completely different developmental opportunities 4 students.
A1. Less limitations. No longer hindered by access to resources within the school. Greater opportunities to collaborate.
. Agree allows for more personalised learning. https://t.co/JWoRjwUiEg
. A1.Ss are more independent, engaged motivated & set own goals of what they can achieve& where to next ( with guidance if young)
my first was a commodore 64 programming pick a path adventures
A1: Traditional classroom is teacher centered. A digital classroom is student centered.
Hi My fav piece of digital tech when I was a young 'un was 'snake' on Mum's brick of a mobile phone. Not much tech in Maffra!
A1: always available information lead to a transformation of how and what we learn.
A1 The role of the teacher should be very different in technology rich classrooms.
A1 there very few rules. There is zero lecture. We discuss as we build. We are always building
A2 School and real world are getting closer 😉
A1 more personalised, accessible and instant... and exciting!
A2. Real power is the level of individualizations of learning pathways!
sorry I'm late but Caitriona from Melbourne here!
A2
Benefits: access to knowledge, access to skills
Impact: reliability on technology
Tech makes my life much easier - I have access to students' work all the time, can track progress etc. https://t.co/3Wt0iNkllc
agree that it is important to balance tech with F2F - some feedback & conversations are best without technology
A2 more opportunities to access to a variety of resources quickly, making it easier to differentiate
A2 allows 24/7 learning and also greater transparency
This convo is kind of like carbon dating. We're all finding out each other's ages with remarkable accuracy.
A2: The benefits are there are many choices for learning. The impact is if it is not implemented well, then tech is pointless.
Connections, connections and more connections. Allowing the students to make those positives connections w teachers & community
Disagree; I think traditional can still be student-centred & I've seen digi. classrms be teacher-centred https://t.co/IiYDHSZLSv
A1: Traditional classroom is teacher centered. A digital classroom is student centered.
Clearly this was my favourite technology when I was young mine was called Greenhouse. Hi everyone :) https://t.co/Dy9QNxW4su
we can accurately track student data. We can publish and create easily. We are also more connected to the world
A2: Benefits are that learning is more authentic. Ss pull information if and when they need it to solve a problem.
A2: Anytime learning. When I need to know, I can. Benefits the whole school community. Access to information. Impact is unknown!?
By Ts and Ss wherever they are. https://t.co/EvNM9INksx
A1 digital classroom allows for dynamic and efficient explanations and demonstrations of concepts
A1) Tech in the classroom prepares Ss for their future & sets them up for this increasing digital economy
A1 Rural or isolated doesn't mean a phone call or wait for letters from pals. It's collaborating on projects and face to face.
A1 The digital classroom gives you ease to differentiate, collaborate, and engage students in the learning.
Tech allows, to some extent, a reduced work load - everything can be online. Much faster for the tech savy
A2 Connections, connections and more connections. Allowing the students to make those positives connections w teachers & community
A2 Just as you can't learn to swim without water, there are many developmental possibilities that require technology.
So long as we don't go into what pop music we used to like, I think I'm okay with that.
I remember the mystique surrounding the DX. I knew my life would be amazing if only I had a DX.
. A2. Connections, more involvement from others bringing community in to get involved in sch eg blogs wikis facebook pages Sharing
For students the benefit for their future is massive as opposed to Ss who aren't exposed to tech. Touch typing / coding all useful
A1: the digital classroom is a portal, without traditional barriers the learning never stops
A2: for me, it means I can teach from home online & my Sts can attend from their homes live, or listen to recordings - flexibility
A2: digital classrooms are much more student driven - and more easy to differentiate depending on students' needs
A2 differentiation, different assessment modes for task, more efficiency in some areas, collection of data, ease of communication
A1: A digital classroom should maximise resources for improved formative assessment, teacher as coach, sustained learning
A2 student independence , teacher transparency & deeper connection with parents
Hi , in Toowoomba QLD- A1: the traditional classroom has teacher at centre. Digital classroom has everyone connected and sharing
A2 can also become a "big brother" kind of environment in which adults are constantly checking on what students do
A2 drew first really means create and sharing. So students are using tools to expand past the walls of the classroom
Tech for me with a school improvement plan is all about SPA and data. Looking at trends, what works, what doesn't
A2 benefits should be learning can be 24/7 no waiting to be taught. Impact- self directed learning if allowed.
Q2 Digital Classrooms bring the classroom, schools and the community together thats the biggest benefit.
A2 - Endless opportunities, ability to create new ideas, technology allows new connections to be build for all
A2 A digital classroom can offer transparency of learning and outcomes to parents and wider community. So many avenues to share.
A2 Global learning and connecting. The opportunity to learn with Ss and peers
anytime anywhere learning agree
A2 the main benefit is that it reduces progress hurdles as it allows for differentiation & learning to continue outside the lesson
A2 digital classroom can help broaden T & S perspectives
A1: paperless...multiple types of devices being used to research information, perhaps even more student driven...
A2 clearer communication, varied evidence and visible history of learning
. A2.I post upcoming events & photos of events eg Sch Olympics on sch F/book page as most Ps have F/Bk. Connects, shares, informs
A2. Students- a wider audience. So powerful for writing.
A3 also important is to realize that we need balance the physical and the digital
A2. Digital tech amplifies human attributes. Collaboration, communication & curiosity all get magnified https://t.co/QZwD8cZgYZ
the problem with data collection most teachers don't have stats background, & don't use data properly.
A1: Very little difference really....simply the addition of connected technical tools which allows for different learning options
A2 Clearly developing as a global, cross disciplinary learners is not possible without technology as a mediating development.
A1. The difference is that a digital classroom prepares Ss for their future whereas a traditional classroom lies in the past
A2 When my Ss needed to Skype an apiarist last week, the biggest problem was who's computer to use.
A2 Up to date knowledge, local and global connections and inclusion for Ts Ps and Ss
I thought these were demythtified already...
Q2 When Ss can't access the knowledge about the world, digital classrooms bring the world to Ss. Why I learnt to use technology.
A2 as responsible user of the Internet, students should post as much as they take from there
My favourite everything in my classroom was the dancing teacher. Very blessed to have had the best! https://t.co/rksE8KPmUK
defiantly a necessary life skill
Imagine being able to Skype with an expert in the topic that they are studying, or go on a virtual field trip from rural Aust.
Skype allows Ss to connect with anyone around the world to help work towards their goals
A2. Teachers - being challenged, growing with others, enhancing our skills. Learning about new ideas 'NOW'.
4 years ago I could not use any type of technology, after 1 PD to learn to build a blog I now create magic in my classroom.
A2: tech allows many ways to communicate, collaborate, connect, learn. If done well, the impact can be improved learning
A2. The digital classroom has new risks & dangers too. We have a duty of care related to what our sts are exposed to. Must discuss
A3 we make big assumptions that ss know how to use digital tech
A2. Connecting with Ss, the community, Australia and the world
The free exEX course helps navigate the murky waters that is data. Amazing resource
A2)Tech enables Ss to learn at own pace, allows for individualized instruction, Ss can learn according own abilities & needs
A3 we spend more time teaching tech than focusing on content. team up with you tech teacher on projects
A2: Ss are better prepared for the thinking and means by which information gathering and application are going to be post-HS.
A3: Digital footprint, digital citizenship and monitoring. Need a trusting relationship between S/T/P and sound pedagogy first.
A3 Use of tech for sake of tech/appearing innovative worries me.High order thinking & effective questioning needed more than ever!
A3: Access for all, at a price we can afford. Where your school lives should not define how much you pay for access to internet.
A3 enough working devices
Not just Ss digital technology enables Ts to mentor each other too https://t.co/VdBNA8vyRQ
Skype allows Ss to connect with anyone around the world to help work towards their goals
A2 Technology enables learners to participate and influence the goal of learning, without technology, the curriculum dictates.
That is on par with Cadbury vegemite chocolate. I am not sure which one would be worse tbh!
A3 School policy. Lack of understanding from leadership, lack of trust in students (sometimes justified), infrastructure, cost
A3 challenges can be distraction - but keeping students on track is easy if they see purpose in their learning
agree we are remaining consumers of tech not creators
A3 sometime a digital tool isn't the right took to explain how something works
A3 A main challenge is the need for a change in mind-set in order to take full advantage of the opportunities
A3 distractions, lack of privacy, overwhelming amount of information available leading to being "frozen" rather than motivated
A3. Sts often forget the extent or impact of their digital tattoo. They must be educated on the risks https://t.co/MeGgoe3y2C
A3 Fairness and equity should not be a barrier. Good point https://t.co/Nw7E2u6aiC
A3: Access for all, at a price we can afford. Where your school lives should not define how much you pay for access to internet.
And that they all have access https://t.co/4JDrCoj8Sy
A3 we make big assumptions that ss know how to use digital tech
A3 Keeping Ss on task, can be easily distracted. Good cyber safety in place. Know your Ss
A3 In our low decile area its Ps no devices except phone/ LTD internet. Small sch, funds to keep ipads updated fixed & enough etc
A2. School community - teachers bring new concepts into their classrooms. Ideas filter through school.
A3b: NBN? For everyone? Even those in Perth..and not just the ‘sandy’ suburbs!
A3. Network availability, Ss skill level, ability of Ss not to be distracted...
Can you give me an example of this? I've heard it said a lot but I can't imagine teachers doing this.
or shared ones that are left behind uncharged... 😑
A3 Using tech for tech's sake....as if it is a $600 pencil.
A3 the challenge is making good choices, finding balance, not being overwhelmed
A3 need to be using digital tech to accelerate learning not drive it needs to be underpinned by strong pedagogy
Digital citizenship for Ss - how can we portray how crucial it is that nothing ever disappears!
"My laptop ran out of battery, I've been using it all morning!" (policy of no charging in school) https://t.co/0ohbornIwY
A2.1: school community benefits by being part of the learning & doing that allows for more innovative practices, risk taking, etc.
Q3 Biggest challenge is teacher fear, Ss knowing more than the teacher and the changing world. Keep up or you will be left behind
A2 benefits of DC greater opportunities for Ss to make connections globally, learning is deeper, faster, no limits
A3 what do you do about those students who don't have access from home?
couldn't agree more - students need PD too . Sometimes we assume they are more capable with tech than they are
A3 getting people out of their comfort zone and wanting use tech
A3 Technology forces us to rethink curriculum, actually it forces us to consider education approaches without a curriculum.
Joanna from WA - Sega Megadrive! Huuuuge part of my childhood, still remember every cheat code! https://t.co/1KSgvBkkPt
A3 In Germany it’s often about the preconditions: money, data protection, internet access.
A3 some adults still fear and dislike using tech
a lot of schools don't have a tech teacher. I think it's time we bring back specialists https://t.co/u1BtBa2PiY
A3 we spend more time teaching tech than focusing on content. team up with you tech teacher on projects
Q3 the need for digital citizenship of all involved in the learning process
Its about the fear of Ts with parents being engaged and involved in the online learning of their child https://t.co/umNu66RRsY
, when we give them shiny toys and new apps each week can you blame them?
Also, "I forgot my laptop today" You WHAT?!?!? "Well, we rarely use it" WE USE IT EVERY LESSON!!! https://t.co/0ohbornIwY
the challenge is saturation especially with iPad popularity in ASD comm. Stops being a tool becomes calming device
A3: the digital divide. The have's and the have-nots is evident. Access to, speed, ability, confidence
A3 Enough support for Ts who need help implementing the tech in the classroom. Digital Citizenship for students.
Cannot see Qs pls RT 😊 Thank you kindly
A3 Cybersafety is a big concern at my school. Ps and Ts either over anxious or no concern. Trying to meet in middle
To eliminate this students need roles to make digital equitable
Hello all. Manuel from St. Louis, Missouri. Jumping in late. Nintendo & calculator wrist watch. Fav childhood tech.
A3 - challenges may present as gaining access to digital tech - my school limited tech availability. Other issue digital footprint
A3 Having spent the last 7 weeks w Ss in 1:1 I have to say being self driven to stay on task is a barrier. Relearning to learn
A3. Staying emotionally and socially connected within the classroom! Take time to really model connectedness with students !
do they? they may know the lastest game but do they understand the tech?
A3 Enabling SEN students to be digital savvy-upskill teachers & parents & service providers
And that they will look in the right place for things
Hi Viv here lurking and learning ...
A3: The past…and how we used to do stuff. Interestingly, I’ve never seen a teacher throw out a pencil with a broken lead...
A3: Data Security and privacy, tech support and service, PD for Ts
We ask Ts to speak the lang. of data, the data folks must learn the lang of learning, Hattie
Extending the curriculum not just replacing https://t.co/M1jIR313Km
A3: Digital footprint, digital citizenship and monitoring. Need a trusting relationship between S/T/P and sound pedagogy first.
A3 with access to infinite information, Ss need to learn how to be discerning editorial processes different or non-existent online
A3: Challenges of tech include digital citizenship - Ts and Ss; tech for the sake of it; some Ts lack confidence; time to learn
I'm using a MacBook Air (what our Ss use) and I'm dead by lunch. We let them charge because our workspace allows it
A2: Digital classroom benefits: supports interconnectedness, amplification of voice, provides greater choice/learning options.
A3 - Access to the latest technology, as well as Ts providing the opportunity for Ss to understand the pro's and con's
Extending, enhancing, all of the above.
even Hattie got his stats wrong too :) he is speaking from experience.
It's the disparity in society, what different families can afford effects chns level of understanding in schl.
Known fact Ss living in Aust. poverty have big screen TVS, iPads, computers use this to your advantage instead of fighting it.
why though? Do they have valid concerns?
A3 Keeping students on task
Soln: be an active teacher. And tell kids off
has highlighted this for us, we've lost the art of experiential learning to swipe screens https://t.co/GDHnVLo6U0
A3 also important is to realize that we need balance the physical and the digital
A3 using the tools safely and correctly. Convincing the wider it is safe. It's all about educating
The tech should be used to support the pedagogy
A3) Lack of PD, equipping Ts with an understanding of how to enhance lesson/unit w/ tech
students lok@more innovative using cardboard thanwith tech
A3 the technology gets old fast, sustainability of maintaining the devices and systems is a challenge
A3 For Ts it’s also about being open to new ideas, giving students responsibility + authority. Ts need to be learners sometimes!
A3 I believe teachers and schools are being challenged to be experts in learning design, rather than content experts.
Within a given timeframe 😉
should tech be a specialist subject or integrated into all subjects?
Agree - Ss can be easily overwhelmed by plethora of info
Some Ts also choose not to embrace change and new tech
A3 Creating an environment of trust where teachers & parents encourage students to share their knowledge and ideas with the world
A3: We are challenged to teach problem solving skills and critical thinkers not just use of cool tech tools. Pedagogy then tech
So true https://t.co/JTwiXvDaXa
A2: Digital classroom benefits: supports interconnectedness, amplification of voice, provides greater choice/learning options.
The pros of a digital classroom: https://t.co/zUTwuLcjWz
A2: Digital classroom benefits: supports interconnectedness, amplification of voice, provides greater choice/learning options.
Great question, equity is a big concern. Is it time to invite the wider community to support schools? https://t.co/1jxnx5mNbM
A3 what do you do about those students who don't have access from home?
A3: ability levels when it comes to using new tech, in some places, equitable access to dig tech. Start with explicit instruction!
never do anything with tech that you could do with paper and pen
1st time joining in.. childhood 4 me - spaceinvaders & Pacman. Trad classroom = 4 walls, Digital classroom intro the world 2 Ss
yeah I have the same laptop as the students and mine doesn't last all day either
You particularly notice this with pre-schoolers, who try and swipe laptops and desktop screens - conditioning.
I do sometime so I know how easy it can be to feel that way. Trying to "catch it all" is hard!
Well said https://t.co/7gXZ3nh2Zs
A3: the digital divide. The have's and the have-nots is evident. Access to, speed, ability, confidence
A3: A digital classroom being labeled a digital classroom can be the challenge. Knowing when to turn on/off & remembering balance.
A3. Negativity towards new ideas. Ignore it :) Using tech as a filler. There needs to be a purpose.
We do something similar with HW clubs but then you get Ss who can't say behind due to travelling ect
A4 Know your Ss, know your content and play to learn with tech to transform learning beyond 4 walls & paper!
A3: there are still equity issues with using tech, we can't have students missing out because of connectivity or cost
...and using the IWB as another display space for paper posters
I follow rules at all times ;)
Q3 Pro Ss lead learning, my kids are in global projects, Skype, blogging toughest kids I have ever taught but still can be done
So true. This is why the NBN is so important https://t.co/whQ6t4qe5o
A3: Access for all, at a price we can afford. Where your school lives should not define how much you pay for access to internet.
Biggest problem I think https://t.co/qiHUSnUyFr
A3) Lack of PD, equipping Ts with an understanding of how to enhance lesson/unit w/ tech
A3: Challenges...honestly, the feeling of needing to 'keep up' as T, but recognizing that we can all co-learn/collaborate together.
integrated def but not at the expense of teaching our content
A3.1: accessibility needs to be a district priority. My school is going 1:1,but after all others have. We've had to be creative!
Dead straight! Our current favourite 'brain break' is good ol' fashioned Celebrity Head
True - change is really challenging for many people, esp. if they can't envision improvement
A3: poorly maintained & resourced infrastructure, unworthy/fragile devices, inflexible software/apps, untrained/resistant T's.....
Sad but true.Students "on the computer" does not necessarily = engaged in learning. https://t.co/Pn3kDqK6YV
the challenge is saturation especially with iPad popularity in ASD comm. Stops being a tool becomes calming device
I have to admit our technology and infrastructure is pretty good.
The chalenge is ensuring it is used correctly
A4 'You're good with tech' is not by chance - Tchrs connect, collaborate & create with others, esp. alongside your students
I disagree here free PD is everywhere with the internet you just have to look for it
The pressure can be terrible. It can also cause resentment towards one another. I'm sure we've both seen this.
health and safety concerns primarily I think... and students not coming in prepared (charged)
we need to be learners ALL the time indeed! ;)
I've seen some schs supported by big companies like Microsoft to provide Ss with tech
A3. Teachers not using technology authentically. Pedagogy needs to change first
A4: The best digital professional learning I've had is from my students. Their ideas are more bold and exciting than my own.
Q3 Pro having the opportunity to have paperless classroom days.Drafting on kidblog, researching, reading, Maths all from our blog
my IWB was broken until last week. And now it's set up wonky. Annoying. :)
A3 I think teachers and schools often mistake problems of development, as technology problems that can be solved with rules.
I find the opposite in my school PLT and PLC is focused on delivering content. We are on an improvement plan
It's not a question of either or. Blended learning should be the solution. Choose the appropriate way. https://t.co/RqEYuoY0BS
A3: A digital classroom being labeled a digital classroom can be the challenge. Knowing when to turn on/off & remembering balance.
A3.2: accessibility at home is important too. Not all Ss will have same...must consider.Solution is to be flexible with Ss.
A4 twitter also NZ has the course which assists greatly
A4 PD / Professional Learning? - Ts need to teach themselves. Time is more important. Youtube / Udemy for learning.
Jumping in for the last half of Hi all, what have I missed?
What are your thoughts on this? tweeps. I value PL rships like https://t.co/um4GomAyYv
I've seen some schs supported by big companies like Microsoft to provide Ss with tech
I agree. Unless we mean "a lack of compulsory PD". Which is pretty useless anyway.
Many projects are tech driven, instead focus should always be on learning 21st century skills using tech https://t.co/cGr0oFL6Ax
A4 A range of professional learning opportunities are necessary so you are meeting people where they are at.
A4. I started out on my own making quite a few mistakes. Teacher challenge/student challenge.
Such a big challenge indeed , so much wasted resources around :(
A4 that you need to free students to select the best tool for the task. They need to be the evaluators
A4. I don't think any specific PL is necessary. The key skill is a willingness to experiment & take risks https://t.co/wBNN8DC4jI
A4 Be open and interested in tech, often it’s trial and error. and "the internet" offer so many tips & tricks!
A4: How to implement - so that it is a seamless addition to the learning and the time to tinker with tech.
YES! If it wasn't for them, I would still have no idea about Counts as PD right?
could be but labelling ourselves and others as a certain type of learner can be limiting, don't you think?
A4: My Ss prefer to learn tech by exploring and playing. Perhaps Ts need the confidence and time to be able to do the same.
A4 allow your staff to be leaders and run the PDs. Lead the staff in the right direction to give them the confidence
Q4 Best PD I had was how to build a blog and from that check out the benefits https://t.co/wfDBOBT6MY the rest I taught myself.
Q4 Best PD I had was how to build a blog and from that check out the benefits https://t.co/YDUlSiZTN2 the rest I taught myself.
A3 accessibility, reliability of network (it isn't!) and tired old computer labs- very frustrating!
Yes. Learning experience are built first. Tools are then found/used/identified later.
. A4.All Ts need PLD to begin with & continual to keep up to date. Many self initiated eg conferences (uLearn) . Ss PLD 2
Has technology resulted in new learning designs and new developmental goals, that weren't previously possible?
Exactly! Some/too many Ts feel afraid when they switch roles with their students.
whoops, I've totally lost Q4.. What was it.
True however, districts should involve Ts in role out of tech chosen, difficult to learn iPad but end up w/chrome book
A4: Not as much as people want to think. Play with some stuff. Tinker. More willingness than learning. Its not rocket surgery.
need PD on digital tech check out DM me for discount registration code learning, fun
A4. Fell on my face! Embarrassed myself! Handed my class over to my kids! Learnt hard & fast! Now collaboratively learn with kids!
always integrated w project based learning, I feed left to generalist tchrs, tech skills are vague
A4 Finding good PD online, MOOCs and social media like Twitter... and PLN like this 😀👏🏼
A4: Promote and support personalized & collaborative learning for Ts/Admin via platforms like Twitter.
A4 I run weekly techie breakky's- T's decide on what tech aspects they want 2know. I bring the food and knowledge!!
A4 - same requirements for all PD - needs to be relevant, w/ mentorship and shared classroom practice - ideally observation too
sometimes I worry that leads to learning in one way
Content knowledge is important - but the learning/instructional/assessment design is paramount. https://t.co/Fvvyf5TFsJ
A3 I believe teachers and schools are being challenged to be experts in learning design, rather than content experts.
A4 what we need most is good examples on how to use technology purposefully, the rest will follow
how about borrowing out devices like you would books?
PD 4 me = studying EDFD459 Learning Spaces. Bach. of Ed 4th Yr upgrade. Great online learning with
everyone makes mistakes. Long as we learn from them😂. Hattie' and Marzano's work has value
A4 Teachers need to be active learners. If they wait for their school or system to "teach" them, they'll be left behind.
That's because they are used to being given tech asa game to shut the up... builds poor habits
A4.2 Get over the 1 size fits all Ts! How many Ts love to sit in all staff tech PD? it either goes at a glacial pace or too fast.
A4 Create a culture where trialling, experimenting is encouraged.
A4 most productive PL was 'play time' with tech linked it to curriculum & 'real' classroom mini hack sessions great too
A4 most productive PL was 'play time' with tech linked it to curriculum & 'real' classroom mini hack sessions great too
A3 Of course, the biggest challenge is not to be distracted by the shiny, and instead seek to understand what is really happening.
Q4 T's need to want to have PD, want to change. You can go to PD's but come back & implement nothing. Technology takes practice.
A4: Engage teachers who are not confident in using tech with an opportunity to 'have- a- go' and show ways to teach effectively
A4: Being ready to learn from colleagues, students, online resources - there's so many opportunities without formal PL
PD have to be there showing its stress free failing is an opportunity for learning Thats what we tell Ss https://t.co/RqZIrkTGeh
A4: perhaps the most important challenge, PD for Ts is necessary but often of poor quality. Found the best PD here an Twitter.
is now trending in USA, ranking 24
A4. Play try things out the best learning tho. Many Ss very fast at that more risk takers than Ts. Ss Not scared if goes wrong IMO
A4) Relevent PD that Ts can use or transfer into their classroom
A4: meeting Ts where they are at, understanding their concerns/perceptions of tech., multiple means by which to learn (see,do).
A4 best to learn through practice with the help of a knowledgeable friend
We've had 3 die this year. Trying to pre plan for next year so replacements can happen quick.
A good idea in theory but very costly if you have a limited budget
focus on deep learning with tech as supporting tool. Teacher guides the learning
oh yes, internet goes out all the time for us!
Q4 Learn from experts in your school. Best PD costs a lot but attend a global conference amazing. Free PD TWITTER best thing ever
now if it is like that was developed by we are all in
The best PD is the one you need to fit a purpose and professional learning goal
sadly that may become most teachers in NZ with recent government changes allowing school not to be a place
A4 Put in place various models and empower others to do great work.
When I was eLearning Co-ord I would run some big PDs but most of time it was buddies and small teams to keep things relevant
mine was working as a projector but no other functionality. Strange
A4 For me, I find I want PD beyond the 'cool app.' Want to help Ss dvlp their own AR or code their own app, so limiting in primary
yes with tech support where needed gone is the time when we all have learn one edtech all together at the same time
Classroom also teaches common culture and values. Traditional teaching has also its place in the present.
A4: It helps to begin by being curious. What are we doing w/ Ts to build curiosity. We focus a lot on Ss. I'd like to shift to Ts.
A4 I learn through collaborating with others, letting Ss show me what they know, Twitter chats, blogs, presenting at conferences
A5 People are our best resource and finding appropriate PLN. Attended workshop on Neopixels today https://t.co/vKIrOMDSSq
A1 Teacher can't be a static up the front presence
A4 I attack PD at school through "Tech Tip Tuesday" A weekly email with a 3min vid showing new tech, or new approach with tech
This. A4 https://t.co/MDjaZRMrUJ
A4: My Ss prefer to learn tech by exploring and playing. Perhaps Ts need the confidence and time to be able to do the same.
exactly Leonie, my Ss love trying things out.
A4. I am now in a place where processes of how you use tech is as critical or more critical than the tech itself!
A4 I believe, we need teachers who are learning designers, who are able to discover what works in their unique environment.
A4 Give them a framework to inquire deeply about their own practices.
A4: give Ts opportunities to have the tech first. Create times such as "Appy Hour" where they can share apps & how they use them
A4 This is my role this yr. Twitter has been big resource. Modelling helps overcome reluctance
A4) I'm a cyber educator, learned to enhance curric w/ tech this year, SAMR, thanks to
I'm not a big lover of the traditional worksheet
I think every school needs champions like you to role model the use of tech in their pedagogy.
Digital natives vs Digital knowledge and digital divide
Lots of opportunities to embed tech learning into other areas of T PL increase risk taking & confidence https://t.co/CIjzg7TQS0
A4: Engage teachers who are not confident in using tech with an opportunity to 'have- a- go' and show ways to teach effectively
Exactly why we use assessment as a formative tool. Does our instruction provide clarity or confusion? https://t.co/wUl4Zf5FCn
everyone makes mistakes. Long as we learn from them😂. Hattie' and Marzano's work has value
A4: Starting to see that PL can take place outside of the PL class/session/conf. Should turn to industry pros that can teach us.
A4: if you read the statements here on , you recognise how important and great this educational chats are - best PD ever.
One of ours was a different colour each day one week 😊
Lovely statement 😊 https://t.co/4b1TdftupQ
A3. Teachers not using technology authentically. Pedagogy needs to change first
A2 Takes learning deeper and outside the room across classes, schools, countries etc.
Great idea! https://t.co/PZDUFxDnXC
A4 I attack PD at school through "Tech Tip Tuesday" A weekly email with a 3min vid showing new tech, or new approach with tech
I did, there's an age limit on it. Recommended for 'secondary.' Being under 13 is hard!
Thanks mate. Your school is lucky to have you too!
This is such a great idea! I've been inspired by you to get going with some quick tech tip videos! Thanks Joel
A3. Pedagogy is everything, all the bells and whistles don't personalise learning for individual learners.
Join great PD online and opportunities to learn from teachers all over the world. and her team No1
A4. Ts need to step up and take ownership over their PD. For me I have gained a lot from twitter, teachmeets and trying new ideas
sometimes a worksheet is need to record data as students are doing a project
of course. We now live in a society where data is king.Reason technology. Tech and data put spotlight on teaching.
Yep! ! 👍🏻 https://t.co/saPakm4SQ5
A4: if you read the statements here on , you recognise how important and great this educational chats are - best PD ever.
Heading to bed for an early night!! Thanks for a great chat all - such a crucial topic atm.
A4 - PD for me is not trying every new gadget or tool, but focus on one and master it. Currently working on all things
do you have a site that shares these?
Agreed. We also need relevant exples in our own subjects +/or see how tools can b used in our own teaching https://t.co/g5zZ58rS6f
I think every school needs champions like you to role model the use of tech in their pedagogy.
haha thankfully not in my job description! :)
Feel free. Make sure you put the "testimonials" from other teachers in there. Otherwise it's just one weirdos opinion.
A4 Easier to know what we don't need... programs, silver bullets, computers apps as textbooks, instructional videos...
the Victorian government has taken that out of our hands all get PC because they now have to pay for our computers
I'd love to add design/digital tech & Digicit to this role working WITH tchrs across all KLAs
we will ha e a game of charades in the corner for those folks
Agree about TeachMeets https://t.co/8WlH7ois1H
A4. Ts need to step up and take ownership over their PD. For me I have gained a lot from twitter, teachmeets and trying new ideas
Spot on Zee, the S in SAMR ... substitution... established concept... Ts need to move beyond this?
Truth. I recommend to staff "Become proficient at it enough where you become dangerous" - Ss will help https://t.co/36jeYMsh87

A4 Ts with curiosity & passion will find PD with or without help, PLN Twitter Online free conf's plus great opp's if budget allows
A4) I've learned more from my Twitter peeps about tech tools than any other source. . Maintaining iPad cart helps too
I love the sound they make as they go by... :)
Yes! "Experts" help T figure out how to use digital tool to accomplish goal. Not just "here is a tool-go use it"
We're going with touch screens now 😊
Its the best way Ss are not judgemental with tech they love to help https://t.co/goxQS0SZtR
A4. Fell on my face! Embarrassed myself! Handed my class over to my kids! Learnt hard & fast! Now collaboratively learn with kids!

A5 Just one word: MOTIVATION! 🎉
Our principal is really good at encouraging us to try.
and Evolving Educators website has 3min Google tips, Learned a lot from them
I'm wondering, , do people see a 'digital classroom' as better than a 'traditional classroom'? 1/2
Just in time learning ... Spot on way forward... https://t.co/XhSdgfXLVs
A4 I run weekly techie breakky's- T's decide on what tech aspects they want 2know. I bring the food and knowledge!!

Right on! Both of you have helped me greatly! 😊
Tech & twitter have collided for me so I have learnt so much from amazing twitter peeps
A5 Students asked me a question about Antartica that I could not answer. Hooked them up with a scientist there on Skype
Students are amazed at how much I know about their learning because I can see every step of progress! https://t.co/p5YTzaXYP3
Surely we design spaces, resources, tools & pedagogy to align with learning, rather than begin with a focus on the digital? 2/2
Made anything cool? My Ss are using appy pie ATM
A5 more sharing outside of the school. Walls do not contain the learning
BAMM Learning design built in unique context of school/student culture, done in colab = rock star learning https://t.co/orsTDbIAFt
A4 I believe, we need teachers who are learning designers, who are able to discover what works in their unique environment.
one that has had a great effect is . Communication with parents makes a huge difference
I don't think there is a question of better rooms ... It is about impact on student learning!
also, I am never sarcastic! Just ask my husband... :)
A5: The use of ‘Instagram’ has raised the bar on student detail and food plating. They care now they have an audience!
A5 - It has been the increased opportunity for Ss to collaborate which allows me to focus more on building engagement with Ss
A5. Pulled down the walls and open learning up to true collaboration in a safe digital environment. authentic audience.
A5 allowed me bring experts to the classroom

Dont we tell our student to stop me if you loose me no one to be left behind say stop and go back https://t.co/SKHtj0Avvh
A4.2 Get over the 1 size fits all Ts! How many Ts love to sit in all staff tech PD? it either goes at a glacial pace or too fast.

A5 going digital has improved results across the board from NAPLAN to Yr 12 and everything in between
not sure what we have. Pretty good though!
Growth mindset:) Well said.
Join me in 40mins for as we explore ways to transform learning in the digital classroom! MORE >> https://t.co/r7qzyiZ828
a3. Not really a challenge to learning environment, but so much power use has gotta be a power strain on the actual environment
A4 don't wait for the PL to come to you- follow your curiosity and play/dabble with it-see where it takes you
A5: I use tech to flip S learning so class time can be spent practicing and deepening knowledge and on cognitively complex tasks.
no we can't. The classroom data is good. The bigger picture? Generating the data helps us improve and find out
I agree that sometimes it's needed just not constantly
A5: I'm not the expert anymore! Sometimes daunting to step back but I love when students teach me something.
A5 Tech has made my class unlimited. Students have multiple teachers and I have unlimited students
A5 collaborating with other people around the world, in our city and among themselves in a different way
A5 We use a lot less paper, my students hand their work in a lot more consistently and formative assessment is heaps easier.
Great opportunities for learning. https://t.co/0Gyn7EWX3h
A5 digital classroom has increased student independence and creativity, also global awareness
It's all in learning context, rather than 'rooms' per se. If it enhances the learning experience, then go for it.
Yes a tech teacher amazing https://t.co/NrqR3oAmoP
a lot of schools don't have a tech teacher. I think it's time we bring back specialists https://t.co/u1BtBa2PiY
A3 we spend more time teaching tech than focusing on content. team up with you tech teacher on projects
For those showing interest in "tech tip tuesday". I talk briefly about it in this week's blog post. https://t.co/dYU6Iq4xMW
Align with learning, or align with learning/development goals?
We have to differentiate because everyone lrns differently! When was the last time Pre/post testing happened in a PD?
My school has PCs too, less expensive, but will cost more in long run, I use my personal MacBook
A5 easy sharing or resources and ideas with so many others

A5 Ss recording maths problem solving responses in real time reflect on processes, language & thinking - see change over time
Love this! Get Ss engaged with tech and they will uncover new learning opportunities.

absolutely! It's no longer just 'the teacher's opinion' 😉
A5. open learning up to true collaboration in a safe digital environment. authentic audience.
A5 VERY prompt and personalised feedback to students. and theirs to me too
absolutely consider those needs, but as part of a whole in terms of teaching & learning needs.
If we can't trust the suitability of the data, wouldn't we seek to use other approahces appraising learning design?
replying from Bali: will never forget the first time I taught teachers using synchronous docs. The look of wonder!
A5: Ss collaborating outside classroom and contributing internet resources to help each other- teacher isn't all-knowing expert
an assumption that tech is best is flawed one do what leads to learning
A5 varied tools for creativity - CuteCutpro for creating digital family stories, augmented reality for innovation
I so agree. The connections I've made with educators at ISTE are the best part of the conference for me.
Q5 Allows amazing edu's like to help me engage my challenging Ss from another state via google hangouts. So thankful

YES :)
Do you use youtube or other platform for them internally ?
It allows learning to continue outside the class, flipped learning especially using youtube
A5 - been shared by most, but it's too true not to say again, Dig. learning gives students real interactions with real experts
A5 I love hearing from Ss & Ts that the skills they are learning in the Microsoft IT Academy is helping in their other classes.
A5 I have realised that 'teaching the textbook' is the biggest disservice we can do to our S's... there is so much more to learn!
working! Hate that word, they are learning smarter not harder
300 Hours of vid are uploaded to youtube EVERY MINUTE. That many people can't be wrong. It's what I use.
Spot on brother! It is all impact on students and their learning. What works for them in given situations1 https://t.co/SZf3CbIxAX
an assumption that tech is best is flawed one do what leads to learning
I guess I don't see traditional & digital as different classrooms, but part of an array of toolboxes.
My students discovered the chat feature of classnotes on 365 this week too. Once they've stopped the silly messages we'll use it!
So true! Plus, you can grade their texts while they working on it and give tips 👍🏻
Thanks for the chat everyone. Finishing up now - big week approaching.
A5) Ss feel empowered, motivated, familar & experienced w/ tech, more comfortable, Ss able assist others, share their expertise
A6 use of for collaboration, ss hated at first but now exams are up...
that's my thinking. Start with learning & desired results. Then backwards design.
I am finding the data attached to tests like SWST, F&P, essential assessment and PAT helpful at the moment
We now Skype with our friends in Uganda because I started tweeting. Wouldn't have found our friends otherwise.
Q6 Kids trying to sneak on games when I am not looking. First class ever to do it to me.
A5: the biggest things I've seen are increased S engagement and the feedback Ts can provide right away...there is a connection!😊

+ As a Visual Arts & Design teacher using technology is one of many methods that allow my students creativity and expression.
me too thanks & always a learning platform of passionate educators!
tech allows great classroom, teaching & learning possibilities, but I don't START with tech/digital.
old technology. Computers well past there use by date slowing or stopping lessons
+ As a Visual Arts & Design teacher using technology is one of many methods that allows my students creativity and expression.
No problem. If you end up tech tip tuesdaying please let me know. Maybe I'll start posting mine somewhere online too.
A6: has disrupted me…sent notifications in the middle of a lesson, straight to big screen. Oh. That’s not what you mean.
A6. Laser Printer- Should have taken more time to learn processes before opening up to students to work on it!
Profound, succinct, & eminently retweetable
A6: Looking forward to classroom disruption via Twitter, Skype and Seesaw as we begin just after Labour Day. 😊
I'm dreaming of trying to get myself to Australia and New Zealand in 2018. Keep me posted.
A6: Chromebook (at times) Yikes! After talking w/ several Ts we noticed that rooms were quieter. No dialog b/w Ss. Making progress
You are so lucky I would love your job https://t.co/Q6AAjy8RoJ
A4) I'm a cyber educator, learned to enhance curric w/ tech this year, SAMR, thanks to
A6 MinecraftEDU - MSoft crippled it now though. Social Collaboration, planning, group work.... would use it more if I could.
A3: Big challenge is that students & teachers can easily be distracted by technology. Can lose focus on learning goals
start with the desired learning outcomes then see if tech can enhance that
For any teachers of Religion, will be happening this Wednesday. 6pm AEST. Topic: Out of the classroom!
A6 big learning curve following & lots of 'play' & disc before introducing coding, robotics,

Have to say good bye! Thanks for the amazing input! Inspiring hour as always!
Too funny! I'm still searching for Question 6.
I’m talking infrastructure. Built with tech in mind. Originally to go paperless. I start with what I want my Ss to learn!
Whoops sorry got distracted for a minute and bang -missed the whole thing! I'll try harder nest time. have a great week everyone!
A6 I think the disruption that teachers and schools need is not what technology is capable of, it is what students are capable of.
As focus is on digital classrooms, I have a question for What is the easiest, most useful augmented reality app for Ss? Thanks 😀
Yep time to prepare for tomorrow thanks for the chat as always
ask how we met IRL for the first time with THAT pic profile?! 🙆🏻☺️
A6b However most disruptions were awesome ie. students vlogging their drama reflections journals instead of writing them.
A huge thanks to the wonderful for tonight’s discussion. Happy week, y’all!
A6. YouTube sounds boring, but just stop for a moment and think about what it does. Like, really think about it. Transformative.
I'm excited to read this! So good to see you my friend.
nicely said. "Let's find out together." That happened so often.
A6 - good - skype, google drive for collaboration. bad - PC's not working
A6 we rolled out whole school. S's babbling by repeated word/letter frustrated T's but exciting as S's have a voice!
