Q1: The stars are only made visible a few at time, yet I like my classes to get involved in the lesson as soon as they come in. What is your favorite way to start a class? How do you get all the learners involved in it? #scitlap
A1: I love starting with something interesting. A quick video, a demo, even a joke or meme on the projector. Something to capture their attention. #scitlap
I started having a joke of the day up while they come in. If someone can guess it before the bell rings they get XP. If not, I don’t tell them the answer. [insert evil laugh] #SCITLAP
A hook is powerful. I went back and created a list of ones from TLAP. I keep them by my computer when I am planning. I was surprised by how many I forgot. #scitlap
I went to #Googlepalooza and learned about Google Explore ( I think). Anyway, it had a search question of the day. That could be a cool starter. #scitlap
A1 : I like to vary how class starts.... different class days call for diff beginnings. A story, a joke, or "let's get down to business". Today they wanted to hear why I had a hardhat on. Lol #Scitlap
I also like to get them moving, but sometimes find I am just moving them to move them without a purpose (like to go to a station to read a webpage on their iPad). Still trying to decide how I feel about that. #scitlap
A2: Ss get up when they need to... for whatever. This year's "yes, go to the bathroom" policy has been a hit. Also like moving and forming diff groups throughout class as needed #Scitlap
Q3: Different types of sparkle make the night sky dance. Dual coding enriches and increases learning - how do you have the students create visuals and other learning modalities to enhance their learning? #scitlap
A2: I do not have scheduled movement breaks, but I allow my students a lot of freedom inside my classroom, especially because we are constantly building stuff. The mantra is "go wherever you need to be to learn". #scitlap
Oh so glad I found you all! I am a retired science teacher in Medford, Oregon but still Mentor 1 & 2 years science teachers in our district. Love new ideas to pass on #scitlap
I just took a pic in front of the greenscreen yesterday to put at the start of my Slides (they looked at as we walked). I tried QR codes at 1St, but it was too annoying waiting forbids tonscan, as we were going tour guide style, not centers style. #scitlap
Behavior issues are the worst because you know they would be better if they were able to move more, but you can’t let them because if the did….AHHH #scitlap
A3 Love Sketchnotes. I also tried to create memes, but the process seemed difficult. I used Adobe Sprk Post, but maybe I'll try Canva next time. #scitlap
A3: I, again, give lots of choices. Often the only restriction is "don't be boring when you are showing me what you can do/have learned". You want to create a cartoon, infographic, video, drawing, song? Sure! #scitlap
Q4: The stars are just too far away to bring into the class, but we can bring in models. What are some of your favorite ways to use models in your classroom? How do you involve your learners in creating to models? #scitlap
That is very unfortunate. I know that I am very lucky. Then again I have the same kids for four years so our relatonship is unique in many ways. #scitlap
A4 Models! I think this is a great way to learn science, and it doesn't have to be expensive or crazy detailed. I really think it is just anything kids can do with their hands. Molecules, DNA, rollercoaster simulations. #scitlap
Q5: Not all stars or all students are alike. What have you put in place differentiate learning for your learners without diluting the curriculum? #scitlap
A4: Science calls for so much modeling! Atoms/bonding, sun/earth/moon system both fun to model with Ss as "pieces". We modeled distances on football field for solar sys. Earth's layers today in hall. #scitlap
A5: as I become more comfortable w/myself as a teacher (year 10) I feel more comfortable having kids show what they know in diff ways. Not sure what took me so long!! #scitlap
Starting to plan these. Next yr? Integrate hydraulics (veins), surface Area, proportions of the arm, copper tape circuits (nervous system). My son wants to do it this yr so who knows. This is my last but to teach him so... #scitlap

A5 First of all, thank goodness, right? Varying your instruction helps all types of learners. Repeat things visually, auditory directions, and on paper/digital. Give choices and empower kids. When you walk in the class you shouldn't be able to tell low/high Ls. #scitlap
Q6: Beautiful night skies are best when viewed with others. How do you give your learners an authentic audience so their glitter can shine the brightest? #scitlap
I have a couple new ESL kiddos this year. It amazes me what they can do, but sometimes I worry that I am leaving them behind too. They are always on my mind. #scitlap
Absolutely, but there are so many different types of models and ways to model, I am always looking for new ways to incorporate this powerful tool. #scitlap
One of the biggest reasons I jumped on board. So many opportunities to differentiate and give choice when you are creating quests and side quests. #scitlap
I have Ss on autism spectrum. I like to build models using Scratch. The construction process reinforces vocabulary.. Is try the model and explain. They finish. I think they can change the language #scitlap
It is a path I am getting better at but too much of my stuff is still a project at the end rather than a project to get us to the learning, but I am getting better. #scitlap
Q7: Sparkles are intensified when they are reflected. What do you have in place to reflect on your efforts, how do you keep track of changes/improvements you want to make so they improve your learning going forward? #scitlap
I try to focus students on what the model needs to do more than what the model is. The type we use often depends on what Ss are trying to figure out? #scitlap

I think we all get to that point with many things. You find something, it works and you keep using it. Kind of like my own kids complaining about "make your own pizza, again?" :) #scitlap

I see what you did there @PerkyScience :)
A6 Reflection is so powerful. I have a little notebook that I right notes to myself. I also try to update assignments and links as soon as I finish a unit.
#scitlap
I started keeping a spreadsheet of my lessons and add just a short reflection on the end of a week of what went well. Stopping to pause has made a difference already. #scitlap
@padlet has came out with so many ways to post. It really is powerful. I am going to use it to have my kids reflect on the semester in preparation for the final. #scitlap

It definitely is, but driving while typing can be dangerous. I wish I could make voice notes on my lesson plans.or add student feedback directly without copying and pasting. #scitlap
