I think, even though its risky, that there needs to be a validation of white privilege. But classroom climate is everything.
Some tips. Engage the troll, drop the @'s and hashtag. Draw them into conversation.

To be clear, that's advice I only offer to straight white men; we have a different experience from most
jump into this poll with your use of Twitter https://t.co/dSixNB22cv
How would you best describe your current use of Twitter?
nothing happened, being proactive :)
It's that time of day, ! Let's chat! What metaphors do you like to use when explaining education?
These conversations will fit well w/new ESSA requirements as well.
What did you learn today? https://t.co/TaH8ZQIUy5
"Through learning we re-create ourselves.Through learning we become able to do something we were never able to do" Senge
Teacher and principal quality effect school quality. How so?
The convo in schools always begins w/ perceptions of what already is. You must find out what people perceive before taking action.
Driving into work (PDT ftw!) but hoping to join today for topic of "conversations of race in education". Hope others will join!
I think it's important for schools to look at their K-12 approach to race--what happens at what grades
I love this "Our mission is to help you find yours" from
We need to talk about home environment and previous education in order to understand our students.
Important that T's and P's are up to date w/what's happening, working on shared goals for betterment.
How can teachers who don't teach social studies bring in topics about inequalities among the races?
Topic for discussion: What are the conversations of race that schools should be having in regard to the education system?
yes to better understanding. at same time, we can't judge or place our own values on what we hear. empathy is key.
Looking forward to this. We should never have children going anywhere. What are our priorities? https://t.co/MMVIVYUNaA
Why are children in America going hungry? Please join us Tues 1PM ET for . Let's talk about solutions. https://t.co/8pPt0qtBIq
Talk w/families guided by questions such as "What can we do to help your child?" "How can we support you."
Apps That Every Teacher Needs to Usehttp://ow.ly/mQSI302iT5Q
This is very important and we need to seek ways to do this w/Ss at every level.
Leaders must be willing to work, prepare effective lessons, and have adequate training to build a school.
Acknowledge race as an identify, culture, part of society. It's as diverse as any other grouping.

The conversation on race that is supposed to be happening right now seems slow to take off...
Should we ask Ss to deconstruct others' false narratives or try to justify our own? Or both?
I agree. All judgements must not enter the classroom in order to build an effective and safe environment.
I think it's impt to invite others into the convo from community. I bring white male perspective into classroom. Need others.
I thought the topic with the most votes was supposed to be later tonight. What overtook race? https://t.co/mFviva9PsO
The conversation on race that is supposed to be happening right now seems slow to take off...
"Don't follow the crowd, let the crowd follow U." --Margaret Thatcher Give the crowd something worth follow/g QUALITY
EVERYONE loses when an injustice is ignored.
Happening this morning and tonight because it got so many votes!
supposedly that's the topic but I think there's just low participation + lots of ppl posting into the hashtag w/other stuff
Agree--I reach for this too. Sometimes I have to go to the web and find perspectives, people to share--powerful impact.
That's great! I wanted to participate but was worried I couldn't tonight https://t.co/QwI2Cotonh
we are doing it at both times, wanted as large an group to be able to participate as possible.
with that many votes it seems like a demand that we discuss it both times
I think this depends on topic, focus.
I agree! We need to keep the age of students in mind when we are approaching the conversations of race.
I think a regular diet of current events leads to purposeful, meaningful conversations related to race in school.
also recognizing that bias & racism start young - so intervene early
I've seen that--wonderful. It's amazing when you teach the science of skin to Ss, changes a classroom, outlook.
In an ideal world, we would be open to having students call us out. Many teachers lack that confidence.
Impt not to ignore signif race plays in reporting news and recording history. https://t.co/3PJ1tj8xrY
I think a regular diet of current events leads to purposeful, meaningful conversations related to race in school.
It is also important to make home & community aware that bias/racism is learned...not innate. https://t.co/N055gM9ZDH
also recognizing that bias & racism start young - so intervene early
I'll keep checking in. In the meantime, going back to doing housework.
. We felt that with such an overwhelming response we would address the Topic on both chats
In my experience, it gets down to a teacher's willingness to learn, and to learn publicly
I think it's not a great setup to say "let's talk about race" but then not offer any guided questions/touchpoints/structure
Schools should be having conversations that acknowledge the inequality first. It's hard bc teachers feel attacked by the honesty.
Fear. Discomfort. Or, as Dr. Hollie says, "offensitive".
makes sense... where to start?
This is critical, and should be done in a purposeful way that includes acting it out, discussion.
We need a community where ppl can share misconceptions and not be judged or ostracized. Put it out there. https://t.co/o0jat9RooO
intimidating for some Te to approach. "Don't want to say the wrong thing."
Assuming that people are on Twitter, why aren't the votes matching the participation? Maybe people on vacation?
I've seen it, "That presenter called us racist." No she didn't, but she also didn't sugar coat the message. Get Ts over that hump
Yes, except one of these gets WAY more of a pass than the other. And one centers whiteness.
It's great when companies donate to ALL inclusive education, wish that were the same in the job market. NO RACE LEFT BEHIND
well then-
How do we create exposure & awareness of race in less diverse schools
We need to start with the adults- we all need to educate ourselves first and help others.
Our school hosted an equity summit which focused on race as well as other equity issues. High School Level
Right. If we want our Ss to think critically & question the status quo, we are asking them to question us.
What's primetime during the year for ? Maybe stack the deck again then. https://t.co/TeOz9oWgHn
over the summer this time has had very low participation. I am hoping/expecting it to be much bigger tonight
agreed. my point is discussions on race need to be done carefully and with a purpose. Easy to get sidetracked
I teach in HS and I think we teach kids that race is a construct. That whiteness is a construct and has a history.
yes - and we need to e vulnerable enough to be questioned & embrace it
My inroad to race discussions in class begin w/using map to tell what we know about human migration--opens door.
Can we address that intimidation before the tonight on the same topic? https://t.co/v8cXvnasI4
intimidating for some Te to approach. "Don't want to say the wrong thing."
They need to change the hashtag. is a spam garbage dump.
our sch does Holocaust educ, social justice projects, civil rights study, etc.
good luck with that, I'm not the only one that is empathy challenged.
Certainly! The younger we start the conversation the greater the impact can be made.
Terrific--how was the day structured?
If you're after an activity to get your students in the mood for French, download your Resource here https://t.co/E5jjctb7kI
Yes, and we can learn w/Ss too--let them teach us too.
it is intimidating. Also hard to have this conversation on Twitter. However ignoring the subject isn't helping.
Absolutely. And when that happens, our response will speak volumes - both words and affect //
True but it would get even less participation then. I wonder how many people skip bc of the spam. https://t.co/N6bBCLJ5Ew
They need to change the hashtag. is a spam garbage dump.
Recognizing your own implicit and explicit bias is key to becoming a truly reflective teacher.
gotta go back to work but I'll just leave this here 1 more time for good measure: resource guide: https://t.co/sCACgTtjKJ
This is where networking comes in--My son's friend is looking for job, few contacts, we need to help him network.
I hate to say this, but I'm getting ready to skip because of the spam. https://t.co/vCq69bQXP3
True but it would get even less participation then. I wonder how many people skip bc of the spam. https://t.co/N6bBCLJ5Ew
They need to change the hashtag. is a spam garbage dump.
in many places the teachers have never been exposed to it. It's easy to look away when it's "not your problem"
Here's an article I might use in class (history or government) to start a conversation about racism. https://t.co/1ozAwQZFVX
Literature studies. Need wider ethnic representation across spectrum of classic and contemporary lit. https://t.co/BRXJDcHA0Q
How can teachers who don't teach social studies bring in topics about inequalities among the races?
Hard bc you can't pussyfoot around the topic of race in schools. So resistance is strong. Takes a good staff/admin
That's why a K-12 conversation and thread is important--how can we support talk well at all levels.
Start by asking if students see windows AND mirrors or just mirrors.
How was that received? How did that discussion change your instruction?
Yes, we need to talk about differences early, and our discussions have to be well informed.
They held small and large group talks on specific topics with instructors just facilitating and working hard to promote safe enviros
Was race an intentional discussion topic outcome of that human migration lesson?
it is definitely intimidating, but to grow we have to accept that we will make mistakes&we must own them
We often watch week-in-review--Ss love to talk about what's happening in world, we all learn lots.
Teachers should be reflecting on perceptions & beliefs so we're ready for those ?s. Be READY for convos!
Since so many current events topics are tied to race, this is one way to open up dialogue.
I can often provide the history, answer ?s, make sure all get a voice.
I agree. As educators we must also be able to learn from our students and share this new knowledge.
I haven't participated in in a while but does this seem like the ordinary noon turnout? https://t.co/Bgh9fM9hg4
the reason for the noon chat was to get perspective from outside the US. The evening chat has always been better attended though
I haven't participated in in a while but does this seem like the ordinary noon turnout? https://t.co/Bgh9fM9hg4
the reason for the noon chat was to get perspective from outside the US. The evening chat has always been better attended though
I tell Ss to call me out, teach me--I acknowledge I don't know it all, we're all learning together.
What time does the conversation on race begin? what are the questions/topic
I'm w a group of Ts planning, have to go, but will try to join at 7pm.
too often the conversations is yes, but because we want to ignore the problems and jump straight to any solution
I would say start finding ways to connect your kids to real kids that are different, make them real people
As a primary teacher, I always use books that feature different cultures and ethnicities.
Hi It´s Fabiana ESL HS T from Argentina: Very sad bc of US race issue: not a prob here bc we´ve major econ prob: my advice Enjoy!
Can I assume that when question says 'conversations of race' that we are talking racism, not just socially constructed idea of race
Yes, and in our school, we STOP what's happening and address issues of prejudice right away--powerful!
Bill Daggett uses "culture trumps strategy". uses Why before How. Can our Ss articulate school mission?
I think teaching acceptance for everyone is where we start.
Excellent resource. Thanks for sharing!
And that's when teaching really becomes fun, meaningful, awesome!
There's also a lot to be said for initiating the conversation, esp early in the year. Set's the tone.
If you're a white, female educator lurking on , unsure what to say, some thoughts on that first step: https://t.co/Gt18xxJ1uK
it is tonight 7ET 4PT. It is just to be clear.
it is too easy for your average white American to turn off the tv, drive past the problems and ignore them
think it's telling when we're scared to even say the word racism when talking about education, even tho all evidence pts its there
Important to acknowledge what Ss see and not say, "That doesn't happen here."
That's what I'm taking it as.
I know I'm ready to discuss issues with my students. We need to promote how to treat other humans.
Ss were required to focus on solutions not just problems
Another reason that kids living in neighborhoods with concentrated are especially disadvantaged. https://t.co/r1ufoM6RMR
of Malcolm X. That needs to be an expectation, not left to kids who are curious like I was.
The more you allow that, the more you build community--really terrific.
there was only one non white student in my class from k-12. My perspective shaped by Cosby Show...
And maybe what we really need to talk about is white supremacy in every level of education. it's both indiv actions &systems.
but also from books I read like Black Like Me by Griffin. Of course I thought things had changed...
Yes. Acknowledge what is, yet model what should be. "Talking" isn't going to do it. Need to ACT to make a diff!
Gotta bounce. Too much spam. Too important of a convo to be all over the place.
That's super interesting. Have you thought about how that has affected your interactions w/ black ppl?
those kids may have great exposure to oral storytelling tho, oral Lang skills - imp to see assets they bring
Very important--our school has made a strong effort over the years in this regard.
Read my kids One Crazy Summer by last year. GREAT conversation starter and a fantastic book https://t.co/izp6SvcqsY
That's a well put together guide, but if you want to address current realities Ta-Nehisi Coates is required reading
we can read books and share history, but until we make it something we can't ignore- many people will
Agree--and acknowledging the great gifts and beauty each child brings to school.
It also frees everyone up to talk about what's important. I agree.
just popping in to say I appreciate how u always pt out y the youngest of our Ss can handle these imp convos ❤️
Read Between The World and Me a few months ago. If I were a hi-liter the whole book would be yellow now.
but my hometown where I teach was extremely segregated until about 15 years ago.
Critical. My dad always said to me, "Don't complain unless you have a solution in mind."
I think that is the attitude we should all have!
My hunch is we have to explicit in who those "many" people are. It's not teachers of color.
. what about Latinx and AAPI students? Any early exposure to that before your classroom?
I haven't read yet, but I know it will be good. I've heard Emdin speak--really like what he has to say.
Strong effort so important Curious, did you meet w/ resistance? Where did support come from?
I don't think that's always a reasonable request. I actually think it's often a way to silence.
you lose the student. I can't understand every students' experiences, but I can acknowledge they are not mine
I don't have to have a solution to know that something is wrong.
Any examples of ways convos on racism / white supremacy have been done well in their school? anyone use implicit bias test?
When we're having convos about identity this comes up often. Must create language to describe our lives
how were students prepared for these convos? Solution w/out deep understanding often worse
Thanks Jamie--young Ss bring brilliance, heart, and innovation to all of these conversations.
Hire. Teachers. Of. Color.
I look around every staff I've worked w/ (except in HI) and it's central casting https://t.co/mJkJzFdq6F
My hunch is we have to explicit in who those "many" people are. It's not teachers of color.
we've gotten feedback that our asmnt bias rubric provided an entry point but doesn't overwhelm. Happy to share.
Jumping in/out of while I prep new Sociology class - a topic I want Ss to research re: race & edu
Agree. I use that attitude, those words in class too. Interesting to see when Ss follow through and when they don't
I agree, that was referring specifically to white people from a previous tweet.
When they really care, they follow through.
Oh, yes! LOVE this book, too. Met a couple of years ago and his stances really resonated w/ me.
A few hashtags I am following:
The step before that? Make schools a place that children of color want to return to as adults.
my co-T and I asked our Ss to give us examples of when they have felt singled out bc of their race to start convo
. yepppp we're forced to start those convos daily regardless of emotional burden
I had little exposure growing up. My family didn't accept being "racist", but I grew up unaware of so much
yes pls!! Know that many of the crew willing to educate self on many topics, hope they will have same drive w/r/t racism
We are part of the METCO - Ss from city come out to suburban schools, inspires learning.
Topics to include: school to prison pipeline, discipline, lack of representation in faculty/curriculum/books https://t.co/4Htuhq6RBL
Now in progress Topic: What are the conversations of race that schools should be having in regard to the education system?
There's interest in teaching all well throughout the region. We are quite diverse as well.
Agreed,my original tweet was that whtppl typically have had the privilege to ignore it
I'm sure that was a deep convo. How did kids react?
Good point, Jaison--I think in trusting context, it works. If I say, how can we solve this, how can I help
We have to be sensitive as we don't want to silence.
That's too long of a timeline. Both should happen simultaneously. And they'll strengthen each other
This https://t.co/tGzbGyay2N
The step before that? Make schools a place that children of color want to return to as adults.
Good point. When Dad would say that he helped me to be a critical thinker, yet w/listening, help-better.
wondering if that's most productive way to have convo. &what exp was for SOC in that space /history of the place
Thanks Erin... how have you handled these issues?
How can we help sounds better than solution. Much more manageable for such a big issue
yes! Co-T & I were SO HONEST with our 4th gr Ss abt school to prison pipeline. Ts & Es MUST discuss
Anti-bias learning materials-->

Thank you for all your thoughts I share what I can but I will be reading&learning so much more from all of your perspectives
We do a Revolutionary War section. I tell the kids to compare all the main characters. No one sees is all White.
Figuring out a way to identify subtle lowered expectations
Thanks! I'll do my best to jump in.
How can we help? Please explain... https://t.co/uve4BZNiiK
How can we help sounds better than solution. Much more manageable for such a big issue
About 90% of our students are Caucasian. And about 50% of our students are free/reduced lunch.
16 more minutes. And another one on the same topic tonight at 6pm CT. You should unlock though
So then we do Find Rev War heroes who are of color and/or women. Go! Was a great assignment.
As an urban educator I would like to know how teachers in predominatly white schools handle/not handle issue of race
Thinking of Ss who noticed racism at school--was able to help through good conversation, problem solving.
I teach in a majority minority Title 1 school. Primarily Latinx. Kids were GRATEFUL to share their own experiences
that's awesome you talk abt in 4th grade. I teach senior Criminal Law, many have never heard the term
good approach! Not totally silent, but listening more than talking. That's always hardest for me to decenter myself 😐
And sometimes you'll have to do the heavy lifting. Especially for students. And you *should.*
On the way to with Super excited for the innovative practices to be learned this week
Reminds me that there's all kinds of diversity, need--that's why context matters so much.
I process by asking questions / restating & that can center me as a white woman in these convos. Always learning!
It should be about meeeeeeeee! So hard to get away from sometimes
it's important to realize that while I have learned much, there is still so much more to learn
no one had asked them those types of Qs before
Important when school lacks cultural diversity, very imp. to find ways to diversity.
easy to weave into my curriculum as history/law T - discussions on policing, community policing, school culture, SROs
May be better to explore in place of discussion to begin. Sharing & studying resources good start https://t.co/L5VwMCxUkG
I think online Global share efforts are great ways for Ss to learn about diverse Ss/people.
love that! Esp in your context in PNW. Lotsa racism in that history but west coast loves to ignore 🙄
participants who do you follow who is speaking to authentic experiences of identity exploration?
THANK YOU for participating in discussion about schools, education system, and race. Shoutout to co-mods
how can we promote better understand and tolerance instead of pointing fingers
yes, absolutely. Teacher bias & willingness to examine that is key
who is discussing race and amplifying the voices of those usually marginalized in our premiere education spaces?
wanted to help our kids understand how important it is for them to take their edu seriously now
One way is for folks in less diverse (read: white) communities analyzing their own identity and whiteness.
Agree Jaison. In my case, I think "heavy lifting" begins w/inviting greater family-educator teaming.
def! Found same when I taught in DC. Only open enrollment HS in city w/white Ss but ppl afraid to talk race??? Wuuuuut
- How the system itself perpetuates inequity is one many of us need to confront & reflect upon.
Who do you trust to provide insightful, nuanced commentary on how to discuss Orlando, Baton Rouge, Dallas, etc?
So much to talk about--thanks to participants who were willing to engage in this honest discussion.
Asking questions like, "Why is it so white here?" It's not like it accidentally happened.
What say you? https://t.co/eJRmTMgjRP
how can we promote better understand and tolerance instead of pointing fingers
Yeah, the west coast was the summer of love, maaaaan. We're enlightened and stuff
just the fact that our kids can go to schl never meeting someone who doesn't look like them = huge need for convo!!
Thanks to mods . Join us at 7 PM EDT for a continuation of this same Topic
and then hold ourselves accountable for the answers. Because we all have a stake.
Right on Kris... system only works well for a small percentage of students (and teachers).
Abigail Adams for example is great, but kids expect heroes to kill people and win battles...
Something that - almost without exception - does not occur to groups of white women w/ promtping.
That's part of the convo when they hit a research wall. Who was allowed in? Who wrote the histories?
im right outside DC in MoCo! Talking race w Ss is not about us. It's about supporting them.
I'm much less worried about pointing fingers. If people are bothered they should get over it.
I missed this? Man, an afternoon twitter chat?
Skype is a tool my students use to talk with students in the country and around the world.
After 8 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit at 14. Who's discussing Davontae Sanford ? https://t.co/ikgSQm2vEN

participants who do you follow who is speaking to authentic experiences of identity exploration?
what do you suggest as a means of getting them over it?
We really need to complicate our notions of "diversity." Not just a couple women *or* black ppl
Hi! There will be a redux at 7pm EST/4 pm PST.
Not so much my job. I try to be nice, but also honest abt why I'm speaking frankly when I do.
We need to find you some other folks to follow...
I agree because Ss experience it and can relate to it.
And if it feels like it is then you can examine that for yourself. Not my problem. https://t.co/de4zoe9wqD
Pointing fingers at who? A critique of white supremacy is not exactly pointing fingers.
Bigger conversation on race, hopefully it'll overwhelm the spam, at 4pst on the hashtag.
oh ok. Just got home from split shift and was surprised by both slow activity/theres a chat in midday. Tho activity rose
It was sooooo blindingly white. Like uncomfortably so for the eyes. https://t.co/Wpt5h7UaDU
Exactly. That pic of the RNC intern class? I'm fairly confident no one in the room saw it but would claim group is diverse.
It is difficult to think of 'helping' or 'solutions' when no discourse is taking place.
But we all have a part to play. Why exclude yourself 😊. Speak up, speak out
LOL. Right. On both counts.
... speak to the obvious.
I've been retweeting some people that others have shared.
We are proud to announce a brand new chapter for the LearnCloud platform with a brand new design! https://t.co/wlpqE0qET9
Learning, listening on topics of race, racism, privilege, white supremacy... better prepare me to see/address this
I don't want to sound like an ass, but the hour would be a good time to bring up actual questions that we should be asking...
Hoping for bigger turnout at the 4pm pacific . Such a rare topic of convo in this space.
one person who is a great amplifier is
Intentional leadership is the difference. What are you intentionally doing to impact student achievement?
