Good morning, learners! Sylvia, Writing coach & reading teacher @BrandonHSEagles ... & moderator of the #HackLearning slow chat ... I’m ready to learn all week!
Hi #hacklearning! Aubrey, ed tech specialist in CO, fresh out of #edcamplongmont with a lot of energy and ideas! Might be lurking more today, but looking forward to the learning!
Matt J digital learning director greater Boston area -if we are talking library education and leadership in the field - a must follow us @andrewtwallace#HackLearning
Yup, I just adore reading books! Meredith joining from beautiful SW Florida. One year ago we returned home from Hurricane Irma only to wait another three weeks for the power to return. #HackLearning
I'm looking forward to this morning's next opportunity to #hacklearning; I'm also alarmed by how quickly weeks seem to be flying by. By way of introduction, I'm Brian, & I teach middle-school students English in Colorado.
Please join #BookCampPD this evening at 7:30 EST and grab some leading literacy ideas that will take reading to the next level at your school.
Hope to see you then! #sunchat
A1- We have moved from the Industrial Age to the Informational Age.
Industrial Age- preparing ss for jobs where they had to remember things and follow directions.
Now- ss need different skills like thinking critically, being creative, and communicating well.

A1: The library is about literacy, collaborations, connections, technology, student empowerment, and so much more. It's not your grandma's library anymore! #HackLearning#HackYourLibrary
Thank you, Sylvia! This books is FILLED with ideas literacy leaders would want to implement in their schools. Definitely, worth checking out. #HackLearning
A1 School libraries can be a resource for makerspaces, research support, collaborative workspace.
School librarians & media specialists are experts able to help find resources for teachers to differentiate & meet the needs of all students. #HackLearning
There ya go! I bet there are others in this chat who would also appreciate being tagged in case their schedule allows them time to respond? #HackLearning
A1: The library has become more of a technology hub now. Librarians are technology facilitators. For instance, my high school connects with the public library instead of having a physical library. I hope that with increased funding this will change. #HackLearning
A1 I’m excited that my librarian @MrsNicoleHuff has created new learning spaces — maker spaces, laptop bar, and discussion areas ... she has made our MC more like a Coffee house without the Java 😍 #HackLearning
A1: When I look the Table of Contents from Hacking School Libraries, it's obvious that today's libraries are much different than when most of us were in school. #HackLearning
#HackYourLibrary A1: When I went back to school to become a school librarian my friends laughed, and my family thought I was wasting my time. They had a preconceived notion what a librarian and school libraries were all about. #hacklearning
A1- morphing(rapidly) into digital media specialists become the walls tonthe library extend beyond the school and possibilities to enhance learning and imaginations are endless #HackLearning
This is a conversation I wish I could have with my grandmas. That said, I'm hazarding a guess that today's library is (still largely) hers -- though the media technology & how we access it has multiplied, morphed, & proliferated. #hacklearning
A1: The library is about literacy, collaborations, connections, technology, student empowerment, and so much more. It's not your grandma's library anymore! #HackLearning#HackYourLibrary

A1 School library’s are no longer the place for books only. Many libraries also house computer labs and other technologies. Some schools have even lost the privilege of having a librarian 😒 #hacklearning
A1: I would love to hear libs' thoughts on this (because I'm not sure I know). When I think about libraries being places people go to learn, I think about how views on knowledge have changed - less about learning from experts & more about constructing knowledge. #hacklearning
A1. Flash back in time = I remember sitting in our library in the early 60's and staring at a book, "Clara Barton" and dreaming of the day I would be in a grade high enough so the librarian would let me check it out. #HackLearning
Libraries and the role of the librarian is evolving. Library media specialists to me serve as great collaborators. They help Ts& Ss understand & learn the 21st c.research process. Helping with ethical access to information #hacklearning
A1) Our media specialist is proactive in sharing books, technology tools, makerspace carts, and professional development resources. She's eager to share and help others. #HackLearning
When I first started teaching, a library was a quiet place where students went to check out books. Now it’s the social, technology-hub of the school where students still check out books — but also do things like play chess, do research, & help one another. #hackLearning
A1: School libraries aren’t just card catalogs and books...they are a learning & exploration hub! Multimedia experiences, digital leaning centers, makerspaces, STEAM activities...places for quiet & places for collaborative creation. And books, too! 😊📚👏🏼 #hacklearning
A1 - I was very fortunate last year that in my first year in the role as teacher librarian, I also got trained on how to use tools & get to invite students into a section of our Learning Commons called the Design Lab to create with scroll saws, drill presses, etc. #HackLearning
A1 media centers more than libraries. Technology has created so much change in this area. A library is becoming more of a learning space for all people not just a rigid one size fits all location to do research #hacklearning
A1: When I look the Table of Contents from Hacking School Libraries, it's obvious that today's libraries are much different than when most of us were in school. #HackLearning
A1 Because our classrooms have libraries in them, our "library" has become a research, maker, media, collaboration space. Our librarian is our guide on the side who makes it all possible #hacklearning
You'll love Hacking School Libraries, Stephanie. I wish I had it when I was a classroom teacher. Too many teachers just don't realize what they're missing at the library.

For teachers who feel like they are stretched and don't have time to do it all - partner with your librarian for ways to create student leaders. (Got that idea from Hack 4 in @stony12270 and @lieberrian book, Hacking School LIbraries.) #HackLearning
A1- our media center is an amazing space that supports literacy, digital citizenship and gives our ss opportunities to create with coding and technology. All this is led by the amazing @carsonteach. #HackLearning
A1 - My goal is to have the Library/Learning Commons as an inviting, busy space. Last year it was also a "safe place" for students who needed down time due to a variety of issues. #HackLearning
A1: I think that one of the things I like most about the changes in library is that they have become really the center of collaboration. They are meeting place for work to be done within a community. #hacklearning
School libraries are not just spaces for story time & book check out; instead they could the learning & literacy hub of the school where research, collaboration, critical thinking & creation are the guiding principles! Libraries are critical to our schools! #hacklearning
School libraries are evolving. they seem to be less about reading and more about technology and making. not necessarily a bad thing, but I am seeing less students seeing the library as a "book/reading" space and more a tech space, reading taking a back seat to tech #hacklearning
This is awesome. @SylviaEllison has put so much work into organizing and moderating the #HackLearning slow chat. She drops new prompts on Monday's and Thursdays.

A1 - My goal is to have the Library/Learning Commons as an inviting, busy space. Last year it was also a "safe place" for students who needed down time due to a variety of issues. #HackLearning
A1: Libraries have become learning hubs where Ss can collaborate and create. It isn’t a quiet zone where individuals work In isolation. It is the heart of the school where there is excitement, passion, and a constant buzz! #HackLearning
A2 My librarian/media specialist and I share an Amazon wishlist. I add books that are appropriate for students in my classes with reading differences. #HackLearning
yes, but we don't give up one for the sake of another ... there needs to be a balance ... you can have a story place and a maker place share the same area. #hacklearning
They have always contained the building blocks of knowledge. Data. It used to only be in printed form. Now that data is digital. But a librarian has always been more than giving us a block we want. It’s about how they get put together with the blocks we have #hacklearning
This is where I'd love to hear more from librarians in #hacklearning community or beyond, to test this presumption: Have best school libraries ever, in your estimation, just been card catalogs & books?
A1: School libraries aren’t just card catalogs and books...they are a learning & exploration hub! Multimedia experiences, digital leaning centers, makerspaces, STEAM activities...places for quiet & places for collaborative creation. And books, too! 😊📚👏🏼 #hacklearning
I see this too - libraries, specials (music/art/PE), etc are often where cuts happen. What needs to happen to raise the value of libraries in the eyes of whoever makes the budget decisions? #hacklearning
A2:tech has helped me help my ELLs. LMS can help with access to tech/apps that allow ALL Ss access to the learning w/o marginalizing then. #equity#hacklearning
Libraries are a pathway to empowerment, knowledge & inclusivity! Libraries, and specifically ones featuring diverse & robust book collections, give our kids access to the windows & mirrors they need to see others, themselves; to be empathetic, informed & life ready! #hacklearning
A2 Our libraries can support ELL’s and special needs students by having books in multiple languages, and curriculum content books at different reading levels. They can also offer digital content with recommended apps #hacklearning
This week, my new sts asked me why I read? I said “to live vicariously through others’ words” The library is a path to a journey that my fear may keep from walking or living. 💕 #HackLearning
I like the name "Learning Commons" I agree - in our school Ss favourite places to hang out are the library, the science lab/makerspace & classroom reading nooks. #hacklearning
A2- Maker Space! Adding time for students to be creative and dig in. This will motivate a lot of students who do not like to read or struggle with reading because there is a purpose to the reading!
#HackLearning
#HackLearning A1 If I were to run a school library today, I'd want my function to be integrated with lesson plans. Keeping info ready so Ss can dive in quickly as per their demand.
A2: Libraries are places for students to stretch and explore areas that they find personally interesting. ELL and special ed learners can explore without worrying about pace. They are able to try new things without someone else's opinions holding them back. #hacklearning
Irony ... teachers complain about their kids not reading enough while we rebrand the library as a media center and focus on tech/making and not reading. Do you think there is a correlation? #hacklearning
A1. Libraries now are innovative media spaces where students can not only checkout books but explore Ipads, research, makerspace, etc... more lit. circles and blended learning also occur #HackLearning
A1 #hacklearning#HackYourLibrary We need to be more proactive and advocate...showing the strengths of great library programs and how our students can benefit from them...show data if you have to and reading scores.
I think this is what I am trying to puzzle out - obviously the tools have changed, but has there been a large change in the role of a great, dynamic librarian? How so? #hacklearning
I love the sections about "Collaborating for Professional Learning" = libraries are terrific places for PLCs to meet and "Cultivates Community Partnerships" = YES! Let's open the doors and begin using the space more often!! #HackLearning
Wow! Our live #hacklearning chat is filled with @times10books authors this #SundayMorning, joining our amazing Ambassadors. What a wonderful start to my day. Thanks all for your contributions.
Q2: Sp Ed & ELL students are really just non-traditional learners, right? So learning in a library lets them be free from classroom constraints like sitting in desks, listening to lecture, or even just the exposure of being part of a group. #HackLearning
A2 making sure to have a ready supply of resources available for them to explore. Ask Ts to provide suggestions of what could be helpful for their students #hacklearning
Libraries are a pathway to empowerment, knowledge & inclusivity! Libraries, and specifically ones featuring diverse & robust book collections, give our kids access to the windows & mirrors they need to see others, themselves; to be empathetic, informed & life ready! #hacklearning
I agree ... our MC is closed indefinitely because of a radon leak ... @MrsNicoleHuff is creating a mobile library in a local classroom so sts still have access! Her creative spirit and passion for learning is helping sts! #HackLearning
In reply to
@DennisDill, @TonySinanis, @MrsNicoleHuff
But it is happening and that is a problem ... there are no longer classes coming to the library to read ... if we don't model it how will the kids know how important it is?#hacklearning
I’m not a librarian, but to me the best libraries have always been about relationships. I remember as a kid the librarian telling me she got a book in about my favorite football player (Roger Staubach). That was EVERYTHING to me as a second grader. #hacklearning
A1: IMO, school libraries have a duty to be all things to all people. We have to maintain our strong readers advisory advocacy and incorporate making, coding, STEM and other innovative programming #HackLearning
Our Librarian has always had partner time to work together with classroom teachers to teach kids new skills, programs etc., but sadly we don’t have that this year. #hacklearning
A2 This Q invites design-thinking lenses, which encourage deep conversations in which members of those populations (& staff who serve them) get to think & talk about what they need w/library leaders. From that foundation of empathy come new ideas to try. #hacklearning
Seems that way Dennis. And so a few of our teachers started class libraries in their rooms to fill downtime with reading Mags & books only. NO phones allowed:)
#hacklearning

I’m a high school ELA teacher and still take my kiddos to the library every few weeks to check out independent reading novels (100% their choice). Today’s libraries can be used in both new and old school ways. 📚 💻 #hackLearning
A2: We are in an unfortunate position where our library class was cut. We are workin on innovative ways to use the library clerk we have 1 day a week and also build classroom libraries. It’s a challenge but we are working on it so all students can benefit. #HackLearning
A2: The beauty of a library is that all kids can see themselves represented there. In books, in their interests, in ways they can learn/express themselves...the variety of backgrounds/perspectives represented can make it a safe space. #HackLearning
Can I be honest? What needs to happen is a radical transformation of our current educational paradigm. We are like the music/movie industry resisting the future. Who is more powerful; Columbia Records or Apple? Sony or Amazon? We need to apply this in education #hacklearning
A2:Libraries can help support the special populations in our schools by making sure that the books are representative of different types of learning needs and diverse in characters and struggles. Also, time needs to be allocated for media specialists to share tips #hacklearning
Q2: Sp Ed & ELL students are really just non-traditional learners, right? So learning in a library lets them be free from classroom constraints like sitting in desks, listening to lecture, or even just the exposure of being part of a group. #HackLearning
That hasn’t been my experience. The school libraries I’ve had the privilege to work with & in are always bustling with kids & activity. They are an integral part of all learning. From storytime to MakerSpace to research center to book check out. All there. #HackLearning
Very true. What a wonderful thing when a librarian can set the stage for us to build the knowledge we seek and even more the knowledge that can help others! #hacklearning
A2 - Our media center has become a safe, quiet place for students overwhelmed with the amount of students in the cafeteria and the noise during lunches. They see it as a safe haven to escape, a place they can go and reduce anxiety. #hacklearning
#HackLearning A2 To me 90% of issues are about bridging the gap between abstract concepts & concrete examples. Special ed & ELL can breakthrough if libraries integrate with lesson plans.
I am seeing that independent "reading" during class time is not seen as constructive learning ... middle school kids are not on a regular library rotation ... expected to find time on their own to go to the school library. #hacklearning
A1 in #acps w fab commitment to libraries and librarians we’ve moved from “shush” print read write research spaces to commons where kids and staff search connect communicate make - literacy thru multiple paths #HackLearning
A3: There are many! Many of our students love Playaway Audio Books. I just ordered some for one of our special ed Ts to use this year. #HackLearning#HackYourLibrary
A2: Teacher Librarians need to help classroom teachers find digital material that supports special populations eg ELL so material can be accessed through listening or translation (as a short term approach) at a variety of reading levels. #HackLearning
A2. Open those library doors to family members of those students. A library is a terrific place for schools to hold beginning English sessions with families or SpEd advocacy meetings with parents. It can be a magical place!! #HackLearning
True Confession: Card catalogs may be gone, and that’s a lil’ 😔 for me, but my favorite thing about school library is STILL rows & rows of books and quiet niches in which to enjoy them. Card catalogs & choosing books are a beloved memory of elem school. 📚❤️#HackLearning
I’m feeling some great questions to extend our conversation this week ... would you like to join the #HackLearning slow chat? Let me know &/or join in! Open invitation 🤩
This question intrigues me, too. Also, from my vantage, applies to & has ramifications for classroom teachers. Looking forward to reading others' thoughts in response. #hacklearning
I think this is what I am trying to puzzle out - obviously the tools have changed, but has there been a large change in the role of a great, dynamic librarian? How so? #hacklearning
A3: I am starting to love audiobooks more ad more. Not really an app, but huge for allowing all kinds of learners to access different books (and for me to listen to on my commute)! #HackLearning
That’s disheartening to hear. Reading is thinking; reading is learning; reading is critical to our growth & evolution! Hope that changes in your space! #HackLearning
A2) Our School has some strong diversity and inclusion goals. I created a student choice award to reflect this goal. Our 12 nominees more carefully represent our student population. Still have some work to do. #HackLearning
Yes! I think libraries continue to evolve. Ours serves students by helping them to develop a joy for reading, exposes them to new lit. & integrates best practices. Learners are supported w/ how to do research, & create their own book reviews using green screens. #hacklearning
A2 - Our media center has become a safe, quiet place for students overwhelmed with the amount of students in the cafeteria and the noise during lunches. They see it as a safe haven to escape, a place they can go and reduce anxiety. #hacklearning
17 years ... never seen teachers on a regular schedule to go to the library ... lots of teachers complaining about kids not having books though. #hacklearning
A3 Many teachers buy or use apps in their classrooms. Sharing these with the school library would facilitate access for all students. If it works for your students - it will help others as well. #HackLearning
I am seeing that independent "reading" during class time is not seen as constructive learning ... middle school kids are not on a regular library rotation ... expected to find time on their own to go to the school library. #hacklearning
Good point. We need spaces that encourage and support all types of learning. I don’t think of those areas as cells but valuable learning spaces! #hacklearning
A3:20 yes of teaching, many ideas come to mind. Although early in the year. I see @Flipgrid having great potential to increase& improve Student voice outside the classroom everntually infiltrating inside the classroom. #hacklearning
We work to have balance- last year we had our first book tasting and many Ts had us “cater”! Several are asking us to do it again this year. It’s all about making literacy a priority. https://t.co/80axSZj21p#hacklearning#HackYourLibrary
A3 My top three apps I use daily are @Buncee@Flipgrid and @Seesaw. through these 3 I’m able to differentiate, offer creative expression and have a place to store their learning to share with their families #hacklearning
A3) Adding ipads has made all the difference this year for my youngest and differently-able learners. Logins are a real issue for this set. Tablets allow my learners to jump right in. It’s has been a god send. #HackLearning
Yes! Just like the ramp helps someone in a wheelchair AND someone pushing a stroller.....an audio version of a book helps students with a learning difference AND those with a preference to listen. #HackLearning#UniversalDesign
School libraries are the biggest bang for the buck, with a certified librarian and access to resources the sky is the limit! #hacklearning#hackyourlibrary
Libraries are a pathway to empowerment, knowledge & inclusivity! Libraries, and specifically ones featuring diverse & robust book collections, give our kids access to the windows & mirrors they need to see others, themselves; to be empathetic, informed & life ready! #hacklearning
I don’t think the role has changed. If anything we’ve blocked the role from achieving its full potential. We have amazing tools at our disposal, we seem afraid to let the librarians lead. We have muzzled the librarian to a large extent. #hacklearning
A3 tools of all kinds - but putting an assistive tech suite of apps on all 1:1 student supported devices offers every child the opportunity to choose from multiple TTS SST apps for reading writing even talking calculators and periodic charts - creativity suites etc #hacklearning
I’ve noticed more and more of my students accessing audio books in recent years... it’s to the point where I now immediately suggest them to my overwhelmed students. Kiddos are just as busy as adults these days — audio books free up more time to consume books. #hackLearning
A3 I’ve heard about a plugin called “natural reader”? Some of our students with learning disabilitiescant read, but a reader (audio text) could help them because they can learn! #HackLearning
I'm creating a new educational / social platform where we get paid to learn and collect facts. Explained in detail with an example here: https://t.co/RZp4W6yQhK#hacklearning
A2: Resources and tools to meet students where they are at. Empower and engage by celebrating and valuing, honouring the contributions of all. We are all capable and needed for learning! #hacklearning#partnerships
School #libraries are the hub of a school. We need to make them welcoming places of learning. #HackLearning (Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island popped in late). https://t.co/mHR0C8NwUs

We made sure that all our classrooms have extensive libraries and cozy places to read. We surround Ss with books of all kinds & Ts are great at suggesting books their Ss will enjoy. When creating a culture of reading is a priority, kids will read. #HackLearning
A3. GREAT resource!!
When reading @mandyeellis 's new book I discovered this for students to use - "What should I read next .."
https://t.co/Cbt6m5BnSX
I bet many students would love checking it out! #HackLearning
While Ss are interacting with tech reading is happening. Just because we have one, or may be doing more tech, reading is not being lost. WE need to embrace reading in what ever shape it is happening. #hacklearning

The librarian who is included in conversations about curriculum, units of inquiry and projects that are going on in the classroom can facilitate both Ss and Ts learning! #hacklearning
A3 Using @epic has allowed learners to have endless books at their fingertips. They can listen to stories and even watch and then follow how-to videos. There is so much that they can access from anywhere, not one location. #hacklearning

Just this past week, I decided that I want to start a collection & little office library of art & music books available for teachers to check out. Reading is valuable in ALL content areas! #HackLearning
I met one librarian in Linden, MI. Some books have a waiting list. The minute it's returned, so hand delivers it to the student waiting for it - in class, in the hall, wherever - she finds them. The excitement of receiving the book is now a public event! GENIUS! #HackLearning
Me too Kathy! I am trying to make my classroom feel more like a library. I think it is the varied learning spaces that make me so comfortable. I can’t wait to see how the kids like it. #HackLearning
That makes me sad. Kiddos can’t be expected to WANT to read if they are never given books that they want to read. Complaining won’t get teachers anywhere in that quest. #hackLearning
A1: the libraries are increasingly becoming workplaces for groups. They are also digitized and adapted to the changing learning conditions #HackLearning
A1 Libraries are no longer just a place to check out books or do research. Our Media Centers are the heart of our 21-century schools with computer science lessons, makerspaces, coding clubs, pixel art and more! @blesmediacenter@amybedenbaugh#HackLearning

Something this morning’s #hacklearning is making me think about; Teachers are the guides to internal knowledge processes, Librarians are the guides to external knowledge processes. Ts use what the district tells them to. Librarians are free (for the most part). Explains the cuts?
I love this idea Aubrey! Reading should be everywhere. Our Science & SS classes also have classroom libraries. I post pics of the books I'm reading on my office door & Ss know they can come to me for recommendations. #hacklearning
