Happy weekend #engagechat from Barbara, school counselor and author of What's Under Your Cape? in Friendswood, TX. We had our Superhero Family Day today in PE; what a blast to celebrate their #character badges together.
A1: Student engagement is when students are contributors to the goals of the learning, invested in the outcomes, and genuinely interested in what is taking place. #engagechat
A1: Student engagement means students are genuinely interested in what they are doing and are enjoying it as well. It is focused attention and learning #engagechat
#engagechat True commitment /ownership of learning. Empowerment to see things differently, tackle problems in new ways. To embrace not only the concept but the process. When students engage-the break is off, gas pedal down and the race begins. The checkered flag is envisioned.
A1 Student Engagement means reaching every student with meaningful/purposeful work that makes a difference. It is about knowing students, valuing them, caring for them and seeing them excited about learning. #engagechat
A1: Engaged Ss are curious, connected & motivated; they know what they’re doing, why & how their learning tasks fit in with their overarching learning goals. They persist, even thrive, in the face of challenges. Engaged Ss are imbued with purpose - #engagechat
A1 Students actively navigating learning experiences - their thinking, dialogue, questions, pondering, and debating are visible throughout the classroom. In high-engagement learning students are leading their peers through rigorous problem solving #engagechat
A1: Student engagement means that they are ALL in ... with you and passionate about what you've got going. Use a hook like a puppet and you'll experience engagement, for sure! https://t.co/YPzTUgYKwJ#engagechat
Student engagement is when students are active participants/investigators in their own learning, rather than passively receiving information from an outside source. #engagechat
A1: Student engagement is when students are contributors to the goals of the learning, invested in the outcomes, and genuinely interested in what is taking place. #engagechat
A1 Student engagement is full of attention and interest. There is a genuine desire to want to know more from teachers, fellow students and materials. The classroom is alive. #EngageChat
Love the challenged piece here. Students should be exposed to appropriately difficult learning experiences that provide the opportunity for academic and social learning growth #engagechat
A1: Ss being active in their learning. They are listening, asking questions, participating in discussions because they WANT to NOT because they HAVE to. #EngageChat#LoveLiteracyLearn
A1 #engagechat When we engage-we feel a sense of urgency, excitement and focus. We open ourselves up to risk take and tinker. We bend the problem to our will and conquer it with innovation and determination

Do you use picture books as mentor texts in your classroom? If so, jump into this flipgrid and share your favorites! Looking for a great mentor text? Check out this flipgrid! #satchat#sschat#engagechathttps://t.co/GQoWJLl7h8
A1: Every S is involved and excited to be learning and creating in some way. They are challenged and sharing what they’re learning with their peers. #EngageChat
A1 #engagechat Engagement brings with it- a little bit of caution thrown to the wind- we care less about a grade or recognition and more about solutions and growth. Confidence blossoms when we visualize our route and drop the map cause we have memorized the path
A2: Be where the students are! Come visit classrooms! Talk with them at lunch! In the hallways in the morning! Know their names, know what they're into! #engagechat
A2: Be where the students are! Come visit classrooms! Talk with them at lunch! In the hallways in the morning! Know their names, know what they're into! #engagechat
A2 I use stations and move around the room, take time to have conversations, create diff activ for Ss to collab and learn with peers, as T, I love sitting in and learning from them #engagechat
Absolutely, it can be a bit of a risk, but the rewards are WELL worth it! When students push themselves to learn more, without any support from me, I've done my job! #engagechat
A2: Get to know your students. Ss are more likely to engage if they trust their leaders and feel their personal interests are valued and respected. #engagechat
A2: I think it is great when leaders spend a lot of time around students (classrooms/playground) in ways that students see it as an ordinary part of their school's culture.
#engagechat
A2 I use stations and move around the room, take time to have conversations, create diff activ for Ss to collab and learn with peers, as T, I love sitting in and learning from them #engagechat
A2: Ts have to KNOW their Ss passions, interests, what motivates, what frustrates, what they’re curious about, and what they need in order engage with students. Then think outside of the box, dress in costume, #tlap, give them the unexpected! #EngageChat#LoveLiteracyLearn
A2: I talk to the students in my building all the time! Ask about music lessons, sports they play, etc. get to know them. I also include them in school decisions, newsletters, and they help around the building #engagechat
A2: see the Ss who are overlooked and notice what they are reading, what is on their t-shirt, ask them what they did over the weekend...etc. Basically, #BeReal#EngageChat
A2 it starts with those relationships and spending time getting to know the Ss and for them to learn about each other, showing our excitement for learning #engagechat
A2 Leaders must be aware of students interests, needs, and goals. This knowledge requires a devotion to spend time with students, invest in them, and actively support their growth - engagement will be a by product of these actions #engagechat
#engagechat
A1. I once followed a struggling learner around all day with a stop watch & timed how often he was actually “engaged”. It ended up only being approx. 15 minutes out of an entire day due to all the pull outs, small groups, etc. I realized I could do better & did!
A2: I engage students with music and with costumes. Music is a great unifier; we can't all talk at the same time, but we can all sing at the same time. And the costumes? A silly hook, to show vulnerability and build trust. #engagechat
A2: i like to go into classrooms regularly, pla games with them at pe, sometimes I leave a note for them to challenge thwir thinking on a topic, support them in asking deeper questions about their projects, askimg for help on school service projects #engagechat
A2: we can model engagement, risk taking and creativity, get to know Ss & leverage their knowledges, interests, cultures & identities in curriculum planning & lesson designs #EngageChat
A2 Leaders engage best when they treat students with respect and value their opinions. They tap into imaginations and and fan sparks of interest. #EngageChat
A2: project based learning. Love how it allows me to see students creativity come alive but also personalize questioning to challenge them. Service learning projects. Just talking to the on breaks, eating lunch with them, visiting them at their job, etc.
#engagechat
A2: be willing to learn w/ them, like sitting w/ students (in the small group or in the circle on the floor) Show students that you are just as interested in it as they are. Pretend you are a student in your own classroom -- would you be engaged? #engagechat
I know when i am greeting kids during the class change I don't want to be on "uniform patrol" that is my relationship building time ... even when I am pushing them to class.
#engagechat
A2: Get on their level. Do the lesson the kids are doing and share thinking and ideas. Learn more about them and ask them questions. Be available for them. #EngageChat
A2: I talk to the students in my building all the time! Ask about music lessons, sports they play, etc. get to know them. I also include them in school decisions, newsletters, and they help around the building #engagechat
#engagechat A great leader, nudges from the sidelines. They listen and recognize the benefit of the expertise of others. They implement positive change frequently because they are not observing but participating in the action
A2 Spend time outside the classroom getting to know students. Outside, during lunch, during recess, on the bus, in the community, volunteering with them, extracurricular. Build relationships. Get to know them. Give them time and your heart. #engagechat

Like the decision-making contribution here, Chad. It is imperative that we are intentional about facilitating our students' decision-making capacity, as this is a key characteristic of building future leaders #engagechat
A2: What I’ve enjoyed doing is planning out a unit with my Ss. I talk about what I hope they are going to learn and we discuss options. The kids have really good ideas. We just need to be open to hearing them. #engagechat
A2 Leaders must be aware of students interests, needs, and goals. This knowledge requires a devotion to spend time with students, invest in them, and actively support their growth - engagement will be a by product of these actions #engagechat
A2b: Another easy way to engage and make connections is to invite the students to lunch. This Counselor Cafe was so interesting b/c they shared so freely their heartbeats, their hopes, dreams, aspirations. #engagechat
A2 Spend time outside the classroom getting to know students. Outside, during lunch, during recess, on the bus, in the community, volunteering with them, extracurricular. Build relationships. Get to know them. Give them time and your heart. #engagechat
A2 #engagechat Leaders engage with words of encouragement. With eye contact and silent, purposeful listening. Be present, be mindful and people will want to follow your lead.

Absolutely! They need to see us as people and as learners! I tell them about the books i'm reading, the conferences I go to...the people I meet! #engagechat
Thanks! It was the best lunch. One of the questions was How could your family get along better? and the girl answered, "put our devices away." Things that make you go hmmmmmmm. #engagechat
YES!!! you can learn so much about a kid during recess or on the bus! More than you probably ever will when you are teaching them in the classroom #engagechat
A2 Spend time outside the classroom getting to know students. Outside, during lunch, during recess, on the bus, in the community, volunteering with them, extracurricular. Build relationships. Get to know them. Give them time and your heart. #engagechat
A2: Today, I went to a meeting with an NGO. Who scheduled the meeting? Three amazing young women! Who took charge in asking questions and proposing ideas to the director of this NGO? These three young ladies. I just sat their in awe. #engagechat
There is a balance between these 2 thoughts Know your time to join the fray, and when to let them go That balance is vital to develop Ss independence #engagechat
A2: A leader sees students as future leaders by opening opportunities for student leadership by giving them voice to share among peers and schoolwide. Ask S about their opinions, etc. #EngageChat
A2b: one of my favorite days was right be4 holiday break. The students earned a free day. We had a movie room, a video game room, a craft room, and a sports room. Oh and lots of treats. #nothealthy#engagechat
A3 Random activities that pair Ss up and play a game, or giving different choices by using a choice board, or with stations, and definitely with #pbl and #geniushour#engagechat
A2 #engagechat The best leaders engage almost effortlessly because they know their followers, their comrades in arms so well- they set a course, but the travel is independent-thus empowering others to carpool or fly solo
A3: Gamification, incorporating the right technology in the right way (SAMR), real-world applications, service learning, project-based learning, voice and choice! #engagechat
A3: Questioning and keeping it relevant. I also try to give them choice and differentiate based on skill and interests. Really knowing your students allows you to give them activities that they will enjoy and ENGAGE IN #engagechat
A3: PLAY is a huge strategic hook. Last month I set up an Escape Room and Ss had to solve puzzles and figure out clues. They had a BLAST, thinking they were playing but really learning! https://t.co/d0qtZdTZxV#engagechat
A2: Talk to students during morning supervision or during lunch. Leaders could also have snack chats with students to engage with students and form connections. #engagechat
A3: Create learning units that start with students' questions. Allow lessons to change direction based on engagement/interest. Don't be afraid to end a bad lesson and be honest with students about it. #engagechat
A3 Start with a question, story, article and have students focus on questioning. They become the learners, they ask the questions then together we collaborate to learn. We focus too much on just getting students to answer. They need to analyze, wonder, question. #engagechat
A3: Provide choice to students and let them lead their learning. This gives Ts the opportunity to really engage in a meaningful way with their Ss #engagechat
A3: you can never go wrong with food -- every kid needs the basics met before they are ready to learn. Some of my greatest discussions with kids came from sitting around a table eating salami, cheese and crackers. #engagechat
A3a All these response are great, & they have a common denominator They all make the activity relevant to the Ss Class has to mean something to have Ss engage #engagechat
A2: Every Friday I would do a student spotlight in my classroom that involved sharing a questionnaire I had students fill out at the beginning of the year. Then I would give that spotlight their favorite candy! #engagechat
#engagechat Purposeful talk, 1-minute check ins, ADI, share discrepant events to draw them in and then keep them hooked with #breakoutEDU or #Edcamps and observe, get to know and bond with your students
A4: Teachers are using educational apps in classrooms during these last few weeks to engage. Flipgrid, PearDeck, and Kahoot to name a few. #EngageChat Today in @Barkerteach1 classroom! 👍🏻
A3a All these response are great, & they have a common denominator They all make the activity relevant to the Ss Class has to mean something to have Ss engage #engagechat
A3: I would always have my students grade me and give me suggestions on how to improve as a teacher. On the top of the list, kids asked for group work. #engagechat
#engagechat Purposeful talk, 1-minute check ins, ADI, share discrepant events to draw them in and then keep them hooked with #breakoutEDU or #Edcamps and observe, get to know and bond with your students
Agree. The strategic implementation of soft & hard scaffold questions provides opportunity for increased engagement with student learning. Also, Ts should be purposeful in guiding Ss to create their own questions that spark deeper learning among their peers #engagechat
A3 #engagechat It is important to engage with students as they enter the classroom- greet them at the door, start up a conversation. Let them know you “see” them the moment they arrive. Be present before the bell- this engages them instantly
A3: when reviewing we incorporate games & music, when introducing we try to come up with innovative “hooks” to peak Ss interest in the upcoming lesson, try to connect Ss with experts in the field, Ss create a variety of products based on choice #EngageChat#LoveLiteracyLearn
A3: I would always have my students grade me and give me suggestions on how to improve as a teacher. On the top of the list, kids asked for group work. #engagechat
A2: I sit with my students at their table and rotate around to each group. Sometimes I ask random questions and other times about the activity at hand. #engagechat
A3: For every lesson, there is always a way to make learning tangible. This helps attach a meaningful, memorable, relevant, student-centered experience to content. #handsonlearning#engagechat
A3 #engagechat there are so many great strategies and technologies, but when it comes down to it responsive, scaffolded, meaningful work is the most engaging. https://t.co/4qMgVmjQqV
Agree. The strategic implementation of soft & hard scaffold questions provides opportunity for increased engagement with student learning. Also, Ts should be purposeful in guiding Ss to create their own questions that spark deeper learning among their peers #engagechat
A3 Instructional strategy ... kids buy into you before they buy into what you are teaching ... i am laying the foundation for future relationships by how I act in the hall or in the lunchroom. #engagechat
I think sometimes Ts do this backwards. Teach, and then show the applications, rather than the other way around. I think, a better way to engage Ss #engagechat
A3: For every lesson, there is always a way to make learning tangible. This helps attach a meaningful, memorable, relevant, student-centered experience to content. #handsonlearning#engagechat
#engagechat
A2: by being there and being approachable, leaders can help improve student engagement by building positive relationships with them. #everychildmatters
A4: I think that depends on how you define achievement... If students are engaged, and motivated to learn, and see the relevance in their learning, and can apply it....NOTHING can stop them! #engagechat
A4: If students were engaged in meaningful purposeful learning activities, that were fon and wel, engaging, the concepts aquired are remembered easily. The brain assimilates the content in a way that makes sense because of what was done while learning it. #EngageChat
A4 Better engagement =s better interest which will lead to higher motivation to learn which will begin the process again The more it loops, the more Ss learn #engagechat
4: the more engaged the Ss are, the more likely that they are listening, discussing, questioning and completely participating. This engagement then results in true understanding. #engagechat#LoveLiteracyLearn
A4 Student engagement injects the desire to achieve. People of all ages retain more if they want to learn something as opposed to being forced upon them. Getting students engaged is half the victory. #EngageChat
A4: A positive school climate has been shown to have a significant impact on academics. What better way to create a great climate than by engaging your students? #engagechat
Both forward and backwards teaching have their places. It's up to the teacher to know when, why, and how to implement different approaches for the most effective learning experience. That's what makes education an art, right? #engagechat
When we are interested, passionate and committed to what we are doing- it is not work, it is fun. When we are enjoying our activity- we are learning. Learning increases and becomes more fluid and organic when we love where we are and feel comfortable and safe. #EngageChat
A4 When we focus on engaging students, when we get them excited about learning, when they want to learn more, they will achieve more. We need to believe in students, love them, do what it takes. They deserve that much. #engagechat
A4 increased engagement = increased intrinsic motivation and more effort. Students want to communicate and learn deeply when they are engaged #engagechat
A4: Active student engagement based on trusting and meaningful relationships produce Long-lasting experience that far surpass minimum requirements on any assessment. Life achievement! #engagechat
A4 The more engaged Ss are during their learning experiences the greater the chance they will retain the content & skills being taught. Not only will increased S achievement be a result, but Ss will reach academic, social, & emotional goals not formally assessed #engagechat
#engagechat A2 we had our two Indiana US Senators, Todd Young & Joe Donnelly, speak with our students via @Skype. Our students engaged in a question/answer session. Great way to participate in civic engagement and learn about their leaders.
I do the same, my Ss from this year met me in 6th grade, starts with the high fives and chats with the more "difficult" Ss. They're not that way for me! #engagechat
A4 Lessons need to be planned with purposeful activities that keep the Ss engaged, not just busy work or pretty work to decorate the halls but rigorous work to push their learning. #engagechat
A4: When students are engaged in their learning, they will get more out of the experience. We can’t expect students to learn if they aren’t interested. We need to meet them where they are #engagechat
A4: Engagement builds more ownership which helps students advocate for, access, connect with, reflect upon, and effectively share about, content. #engagechat
A4: My students love blogging so much that all my late bloomers to use appropriate punctuation now make sure everything they type is written well, their audience just got wider and they care about what their peers think! #engagechat
A4: Engagement builds more ownership which helps students advocate for, access, connect with, reflect upon, and effectively share about, content. #engagechat
A4: I believe engagement is a component to achievement. As many awesome folks have pointed out that when students are engaged they take in knowledge better, become active participants, and their ability to retain information goes up.
#engagechat
A4 when we help Ss become motivated, leads to more engagement, when this increases, it is a catalyst for more student driven learning, they are curious, have more ownership #engagechat
A4: to me, achievement is how well ss know the material. it’s not shown on a test. It’s how well they can show, tell, write, etc, about what they learned. When they are engaged, learning can be seen. During stations, I know exactly what each ss knows and doesn’t know! #engagechat
A4. The greater the engagement, the more language students hear, the more they understand, the more critically they are able to think= achievement. #engagechat
A4 #engagechat Achievement in engrained in interest. When we want to learn there is a built in desire to keep going. When students are “in the pocket” they are “in the moment” they achieve greatness because it is the only outcome possible. When we are passionate we are achieving.
A4: The more engaging the lesson is, the more interested the Ss becomes and when we create engaging lessons that are different it opens Ss eyes to the opportunities they’ll have and challenges they’ll face. It becomes more “life like”. #engagechat
I had a student showing me some guitar chords this week ... we even laughed together as my fingers wouldn't move to the right spot ... huge bonding moment that transcended academic moment. #engagechat
#engagechat A2 We have also created a primary source speakers list over the last 5 years. Started with Mark Goodman in 2013 when he spoke to our students in the 1980s class about the beginning of MTV. Engages our students and makes history relevant. Some of our speakers.
A4: Engagement and achievement are not necessarily related. Students can be engaged without learning anything at all. Achievement requires measurable learning targets and benchmarks with consistent accountability over time. #engagechat
definitely some level of flexibility is needed! Students may take the reins and go somewhere else... teachable moments! Not terrible to overplan though! #engagechat
In reply to
@MarianaGSerrato, @Dale_Chu, @kimmykcollins
A4 #engagechat Engagement- student choice, collaborative activities and freedom. Disengagement- lack of interest, relevancy and options. It is necessary to be able to think for oneself and take responsibility for our choices for engagement to occur.
A4: When we all think back to our years as a student, what do we remember? I remember the lessons and teachers that made me forget I was in a classroom! Those were the moments I was achieving the most! #engagechat
A5 Give ALL Ss a chance to lead in a way that is safe for them It could be leading a group, helping you with a demo, or anything, but give them a taste of leadership #engagechat
A5 Give ALL Ss a chance to lead in a way that is safe for them It could be leading a group, helping you with a demo, or anything, but give them a taste of leadership #engagechat
A4. When students are engaged - their interests are peaked and they see the relevancy - they are more inclined to complete quality work because believe in it #engagechat
#engagechat One of our best interviews: Mike Eruzione. Spoke to our students about the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team. Helped our students learn about the Cold War and US/USSR rivalry.

A5 Promote student leadership by giving each one a chance to lead. That might be groups or projects. Don't favor the "smart" ones to do all the heavy lifting or mistake shyness for lack of desire. #EngageChat
A5: Give students jobs, responsibilities; let them make school wide decisions; allow them to learn from mistakes and poor choices; and let students be acknowledged when they make positive decisions. #EngageChat
A5: Make the standards/learning outcomes transparent. We all had syllabi in college. Just because kids are in small bodies doesn’t mean they don’t have the right to know what all the expectations are in advance. #engagechat
A5 Give them a voice, let them choose. Trust them, guide them, be alongside them. Let go of the reins and show them how they can lead their learning. Bring the fun and excitement back to the classroom. #engagechat
I am definitely guilty of the overplanning, too. The kids actually have fun pointing out when we took a different take than what was on the calendar :) #EngageChat
A5 involve them in important decision making, invite them to the tablefollow through on helping them implement their ideas, and celebrate their effort!. #engagechat
A5 Promote student leadership by giving each one a chance to lead. That might be groups or projects. Don't favor the "smart" ones to do all the heavy lifting or mistake shyness for lack of desire. #EngageChat
A5: What if we actively encouraged kids to organize around the things they love? Would you be willing to stay after school once a week and sponsor a passionate kid who's ready to lead her or his peers in a club or organization focused on what drives her or him? #engagechat
Let students mentor others. Let them help create lessons and teach the class. The more they take on leadership roles the more confident and empathetic they become. When you lead mindfully, you recognize the importance of personal responsibility. #EngageChat
A5: Give students jobs, responsibilities; let them make school wide decisions; allow them to learn from mistakes and poor choices; and let students be acknowledged when they make positive decisions. #EngageChat
A4: letting your Ss know that even adults can learn from them can be a very powerful tool. some of the most inspiring lessons I learned were from Ss leading class or an activity. but you must create a culture were it is okay to fail and mistakes if you want it to work #engagechat
A5: Make the standards/learning outcomes transparent. We all had syllabi in college. Just because kids are in small bodies doesn’t mean they don’t have the right to know what all the expectations are in advance. #engagechat
A5: I always tell my students I’m out numbered and they need to teach each other. We will all get to where we are going if we help those who are stuck. #engagechat
A5: Promote a culture where every voice and skill is valued and able to contribute positively. Depending on what is being done, Ss can take the leadership role since their skills are valued by the community. #EngageChat
A5: I think of this in terms of cultivating instead of promoting. Taking leadership roles can be scary for some Ss, so we have to help them find their voice and create opportunities. Most important, we have to set the example. #engagechat
A5: provide more opportunities for #stuvoice and student driven learning. When we allow students to take an active role in the learning process - topic to demonstration - they then can demonstrate leadership in all aspects of learning #engagechat
A5: One way to promote student leadership as in leadership of self is to let students take on more personal responsibilities in the classroom and within schools.
#engagechat
A5 Give them a voice, let them choose. Trust them, guide them, be alongside them. Let go of the reins and show them how they can lead their learning. Bring the fun and excitement back to the classroom. #engagechat
A5: Getting Ss to realize that they can make a difference in their own school. Encouraging them to advocate for themselves and what they believe in. Giving many different outlets to share their thoughts and opinions. Designlessons that get them out of their shell. #EngageChat
A5: model it and then celebrate when students take on leadership roles. Student of the month. Models what we want from our student leaders! #hujamama#engagechat
A5: Getting Ss to realize that they can make a difference in their own school. Encouraging them to advocate for themselves and what they believe in. Giving many different outlets to share their thoughts and opinions. Designlessons that get them out of their shell. #EngageChat
A5: Ts need to #LetStudentsSpeak and voice what they need to become successful, what works, what doesn’t work. When we show Ss that we believe in them, they will step up and lead the way. #engagechat#LoveLiteracyLearn
A4 #engagechat Achievement is engrained in interest. When we want to learn there is a built in desire to keep going. When students are “in the pocket” they are “in the moment” they achieve greatness because it is the only outcome possible.
A5: Put all Ss in charge of something in classroom and school activities. Leadership is not a title just granted to someone without strings attached. Leadership is earned thru experience, learned over time, and guided by effective feedback and strong accountability. #engagechat
I’m glad you mentioned this. Last year, I was much better at assigning roles, but I went about it differently. I told Ss the truth-I needed their help for the class to run smoothly. Someone would put up the agenda and sent me reminders. #engagechat
#engagechat A5 We did a cultural conversation with a class from Argentina 🇦🇷 over the issue of gender inequality. Ss researched topics and answered questions. Interesting to hear their views.
A5 provide opportunities for students to be leaders, acknowledge their efforts and make being a leader something that is part of the fabric of the culture of the room - modeled by Ts and Ss #engagechat
One thing that I heard @marcisegal speak about was making sure that we create safe spaces, ideas need “a soft place to land”, when these spaces are created, people feel comfortable taking risks, students are empowered #engagechat
Love my Friday night #EngageChat with all these all-stars. Education is definitely being changed for the better.
Thanks as always @daviswelcome for leading.
Student leadership does not need to be huge in scope #engagechat The smallest of gifts often comes from leadership of ourselves. Let students take that role- self-advocacy- that is the best lesson we can teach them.
