Okay, well that sounds awesome. We say problem solving all the time, but kids are kind of bad at it. I'm glad we, as science teachers are there to guide them. #scitlap
Hi Everyone. I am on break already. I was hoping to see a rocket launch out of Vandenberg but it got scrubbed. I’ve been busy with lots of appoints for me and my parents. #scitlap
Well, we've been talking about the "science vibe" at school. We want it to be exciting, yet not just full of activities. Learning through meaningful tasks, yet preparing them for the future! #scitlap
A1: School - Inclusion & use of tech to accomplish it. Grade - That’d be just me. Class - I went with planets/moons/solar system. We learn it but I think I just chose it. I’d say nature is a close 2nd. #scitlap
A1 No theme, but I like the idea of having one. Maybe for each trimester. #scitlap
We do have a theme each month for a Student of the Month, but sometimes hard to make it fit. Harder than I thought.
Also honestly find people on twitter and reach out! I’ve made lots of connections this way. People are often willing to help when it comes to kids. #scitlap
A1) here are my Ss last Friday teaching a nutrition lesson in 1st grade & kindergarten. I was so proud of the job they did & how kind they were. #scitlap
A1: This year my theme is ‘All about that space’. Everything looking through the lens of space as much as possible because we finally have a Canadian in space again. #scitlap
What's not to love is the craziness. Slowing things down seems a good idea, but tis not the season. BTW I'll be in Boston with my family Dec 27-29. #scitlap
A2) not really. I am only Sci tchr in my grade level & only one of 5 district wide. My team’s philosophy is well known. Parents are involved as volunteers & event nights I sponsor for STEAM & Careers #scitlap
#scitlap Hey y'all, this is my friend Julie @SciGeekJulie She is an awesome middle grades science teacher in Beaumont, Alberta, Canada! She, @AmandaGTeach and I are inspiring one another to bring as much space science into the classroom as possible. They are both awesome!
A3) lessons like measurement & learning to use equipment, nutrition units, pancake engineering, current event science and sex Ed/ physiology are more content area. My @Amplify units & others that start with phenomena is science as a discipline. #scitlap
A2 I'm pretty vocal on my philosophy on teaching, tech in the classroom and all of my ideas. My motto/tag line is "Science is fun, science is everywhere". That's how I roll. #scitlap
A3: This year we worked in cycles and had to work out the Ammonia-Notrite-Nitrate cycles and the role of plants in our new fish tank. It went beyond choosing species. We had to apply chemicals and take readings to keep things alive. #scitlap
A2) always at the start of the new year. I always tell them my philosophy is that science is a process not a pile of random facts. Students will be engulfed in the process of scientific learning. #scitlap
OK, so we all seem to take a similar approach...leading to Q4) How to you engage those kids (or parents) who think “Science isn’t for me”? Where does this idea come from??? #scitlap
See what I mean? Super positive, fearless, loves Mars, and is an award-winning educator! I follow Julie because she inspires me in my attempt to bring the Mars Mission to my classroom. #scitlap

A4) I don’t think that I’ve ever had kids turned off to science. I got it all the time from parents mostly when I taught pre-algebra. I sometimes get comments about how much writing we do. Otherwise, I hear mostly positive things. #scitlap
Q4 Part 1: I consider myself lucky to teach science, because there is something exciting going on every day. #scitlap
Part 2: I LOVE when parents tell me either, science is my child's favorite subject OR when kids or parents tell me I changed their view on science!
A4 Focusing much more on questioning this year. Telling students that science isn't about getting answers but asking questions. Not about the grade or what we know but what we can discover. #scitlap
I watched a lesson from an ELA colleague yesterday, where she had them pick sides using some (fancy name) scale. She then mixed up groups and had them convince the others to their side. Her question was, was Scrooge motivated by love or fear? It was fabulous! #scitlap
Is this distinctly different from other content areas? So many Ss seem uncomfortable with the "let's discover" rather than "just tell me what I'm supposed to know" #scitlap
I think it is just letting go of getting the "A" and concentrating on growth. It is a hard mold to break for students, parents, and some teachers. #scitlap#disrupt
Sorry the chat was kind of piece meal tonight. I blame it on the Voice and my DVR...haha! Merry christmas to all who celebrate. I think we're taking next week OFF! #scitlap
Love how you're dreaming big about this idea. I know I'm just scratching the surface. Doing the Question Formulation Technique with modeling just opened up my eyes to how much better and meaningful the learning is. #scitlap
Don't forget to follow some crew members tonight that you haven't yet. Let's continue to encourage each other through the year. We're half way there! #scitlap
