Welcome to tonight's #flipclass chat. Since we've had quite a few pre-service Ts in the chat lately we're talking about professional educator's role in flipclass.
It's time to get this #flipclass chat started. Introduce yourself, subject, level, yrs flipping? What besides “peeps” is your favorite spring seasonal candy? Also what PD have you put in for summer or fall?
Dan from Wisconsin, first time in this chat. I teach science at the high school level. I have been flipping for 7 or so years, chemistry (1 year) and anatomy/pays for many more. Favorite spring candy? Butterfinger eggs. Hoping to teach a program for Ss in science. #flipclass

Hi #flipclass. Seems like forever. HS Math T here. State College, PA 6th or 7th year flipping, I think. Was just at #ecet2njpa this past weekend. Seeing @KtBkr4 and @collsphysistry reminded me how much this chat helped me when I was a new flipping teacher.
A bright Tuesday morning here in India. .good morning everyone .. Aprajita Ralli...teaching for the past 25 years now ...I take secondary school ...teacher social sciences...History more so #flipclass
Hi I’m Aimee! I teach 3rd and 4th grade high ability! I am new to flipping and excited to learn more about it! I love Reese’s peanut butter eggs! What tips do you have for getting started or any suggested reading for flipping? #flipclass
Looks like we have a bunch of #flipclass folks ready to get started. Here's Q1. We us Q1/A1 format . Please be sure to include #flipclass and #flipclasschat in your post.
Joy McCourt, HS science, flipping some since 2013, joining #flipclasschat a little late also. Last PD I was at was annual miniconference for sci Ts in my school bd; not sure what’s next. Fave spring candy mini eggs or a serious toothbreaking solid milk chocolate bunny. #flipclass

Hi Aimee! Welcome! Start w one lesson. Do everything in class before you set students loose at home. They need to know procedures/protocols/routines/expectations #flipclass
I would love to go to fliptechEC...not sure if I can swing getting excused from that last day of school, & trying to figure out how to handle the toddler... #flipclass#flipclasschat
I never feel like a master! Although I figured out if I end the period w spontaneous silent ball review (ask Q from today's content, throw ball to Ss w A, repeat), Ss will stay ON their seats & not at door anticipating the bell. #flipclass
A2. Bring teachers currently flipping in as guest speakers for a couple of classes to explain and model (it’s a fun experience for you and them, just saying). #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2 teach them how to answer “but what do I do in class now?” Teach them to think strategically about the best use of the in-class time — it’s not lecture. Also to not want to feel like the star in the classroom - it’s not about you. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2 Have teacher prep programs actually tell Ss about it! I took a former S to a conf and she learned so much, director asked her if her classes were doing any of this, she said, “No.” #Flipclass

A2: Colleges could identify cooperating teachers who flip & match up student teachers with an interest in #flipclass Think about how much you could have learned about flipping spending a semester with someone who flips.
A2: #flipclass#flipclasschat@SFecich has it right at Grove City College. She matches pre-pre student teachers with virtual teachers. Having flip teachers being virtual mentors would be awesome.
as soon as we start, it is done. Their attention span has dramatically decreased over the years. Lots of variety and choice within class structure keeps them focused. #flipclass
A2: have a better ed tech classes (mine focused on how to use spreadsheets), focus more on activity design for in class, talk about it, use #flipclass to show students how it works #flipclasschat
The best edu prof I had, modeled a different technique each day in a 2 week summer seminar. Learned more from that than any other edu course #flipclass
I have had virtual student teachers too. They really weren't student teachers because they were just freshmen/sophomores thinking they wanted to teach math, but it was awesome. #Flipclass
My thoughts exactly, but literally everything we did somehow related to spreadsheets and entering data...not even close to ed tech #flipclass#flipclasschat
A3 (although I’m sure @KtBkr4 is still on A1!) Knowing how to engage the students! It’s a little trickier with vids, but many of the rules apply in vids as live. #flipclass
A3 I haven’t referred back to the formal pillar points but I’m thinking lots of planning including using whatever data you collect from kids outside of class time (like Crystal Kirch’s Google form WSQ Qs or EDpuzzle feedback) to tailor it to your class #flipclass
A3. Communication home to explain the method (I give the parents a flipped lesson), finding ways to get students involved in the creation process, learning yourself - content and about Ss - to better the experience. #flipclass
A3: #flipclass#flipclasschat Gathering resources and support to help you, as T, to make sure you are thinking outside the box and engaging students during class time.
A3 I had to learn to use someone else's video for many reasons it was better than something I could pull together in time - big jump for me. (p.s. Thanks @aplusphysics !) #flipclass
ha. same for elementary, middle, and high school. don't get trapped in the all or nothing hijacking of edu-conversations. embrace the good :) #flipclass
I like @screencasto for quick & easy creation (just need to set up title slides at beginning & end of video) and @Camtasia for more refined videos #flipclass

When I was introduced to the first “flippers” I met, they were using Camtasia, so that’s where I started and I’m kind of set in my ways now heh :). Have heard good things about screencastomatic though... #flipclass#flipclasschat

A3: Use your PLN as a support system, bounce ideas around, reflect...there's no "perfect" way to do anything, you can always do something better #flipclass#flipclasschat
A4. There is so much scholarly research on #flipclass that I think we have to stay on top of at least some of that. Also, staying connected with other #flipclass Ts so you aren’t practicing in a silo
A4: my 1st flipcon rocked my world. Optimism w/ realistic expectations. I am trying to get to ISTE and now will revisit flipec as a possibility #flipclass
A4 read (books, research, blogs), #flipclasschat, and interact with other flippers however you can. There are some promising forums at https://t.co/5UvoJ8vTNy . I found the certification courses very helpful, too. #flipclass
A4: collaborate, flipcon was awesome even though i only got to do the online version once, @jonbergmann & @chemicalsams books, read articles/blogs, certification courses, other PD opportunities, twitter #flipclass#flipclasschat
A4 interacting w/a variety of “flippers” is key, too. Flipped 3.0 says that a lot of the growth in the model has come as Ts have innovated so it’s important to discover the variety of stuff others are doing & not just in your subject/level #flipclass#flipclasschat
Q5 I want to learn -
1. how to make sure students watch their homework videos
2. How to assess they have watched them when they get to class, is edpuzzle enough?
3. How to build activities into my curriculum instead of just doing math problems #flipclass
A5 how to do it all more effectively and efficiently so I can be a good #flipclass teacher and a good mom? This messiness (my family kids’ and school kids’ and mine) all takes time. #realtalk#flipclasschat
