#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Welcome to the #personalizedPD chat. I'm Jason Bretzmann your host along w/ @kennybosch. Please welcome tonight's guest moderator @JaimeDonally who will guide us through Qs about Merge Cube and more!
Hello! I am Kenny Bosch, co-host and co-author of the #personalizedPD book. https://t.co/UKHXahPlrl
Thank you for joining us tonight.
Take a minute and invite some friends to join us.
Hi. Jason Bretzmann here. Teacher from WI & co-author of the #personalizedPD book https://t.co/1Xp9FBBTky and co-host of the chat. Had 2 Rubik's Cubes as a kid, but they never merged.
Q1: Check out this video of a #MergeCube in action using the Museum Viewer app (coming soon). How can this type of access to museum artifacts transform our classrooms? #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
Great to see you here Rachelle. Enjoying your story for the #StoriesinEDU book contest. Let's encourage everyone to submit their favorite education story here https://t.co/qcPmZOOhnt in 1 of 6 categories #personalizedPD
Good evening! I’m JoyAnn, a school librarian at a 5-8. The school just got in 20-30 Merge Cubes for the #makerspace and for teachers to check out. I’m trying to figure out what instructions Ts need or examples I can show them. #PersonalizedPD
A1: Having access to museum artifacts using merge cubes would help Ss make real world connections. Esp, for us districts who can't go on field trips. This app could be used in ELA and Social Studies. #PersonalizedPD
Hi! Jenny from Connecticut - PreK-4 School library media specialist. I have 23 Merge cubes and am having fun learning about them. Can’t wait to try them with kids! #PersonalizedPD
A1: I am really looking forward to how this can complement our CKLA curriculum to bring items to the space right in front of our students to reveal their actual size, dimensions, and more. I am quite excited about the cuneiform artifact. #personalizedPD
Q1: Check out this video of a #MergeCube in action using the Museum Viewer app (coming soon). How can this type of access to museum artifacts transform our classrooms? #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
Hi everyone, I’m John a Secondary Tech Coach from Fort Worth. My wife raves about using @MergeVR with her elementary Ss, but I don’t have much experience with it. Hoping to learn more! #personalizedPD
A1: @MergeVR apps like Museum Viewer bring an immersive experience to learning that Ss can't always get, it also allows students to actively interact and engage with content. #ARVRinEDU#personalizedpd
Dan, Business teacher from St. Louis. No class tonight and just put the little one down to bed. Ready for some #CSISDchat and #PersonalizedPD hopefully.
#PersonalizedPD I'm Rebecca Crossley@educategreat. I'm a 6th grade science teacher and I have about 50 #MergeCubes right now. That's not including the 15 I bought and gave away. #ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
A1 All I know is that I want my students to be MAKING the museum exhibits. This was one of the best activities I saw in an #APSpanish class - curated museum of Spanish artists in #AR - maybe #MergeCube could help? #PersonalizedPD
A1: There is a lot more student engagement with all things VR/AR. Students can also see things and go places that would otherwise be impossible to do in a normal classroom environment #personalizedPD
A1. It’s another great option for a virtual field trip and for showing students things outside of our geographic area. Some Ss haven’t had an opportunityto go to a museum. Would be great for humanities and art. #personalizedPD
A1 I think the museum app will be a great way for students to get up close and personal with some artifacts they may never be able to see in person (and certainly not so close up!) #PersonalizedPD
#personalizedPD A1. Now that will be personalized teaching & learning. it will add a new dimension for my history lessons & not only will the Ss gain I too stand to learn so much more ....
A1: This kind of access and first hand experiences can take our Ss around the world. What’s more engaging and becomes a memorable learning experience, this or looking at a picture in a textbook? Not even close... #PersonalizedPD
Q1: Check out this video of a #MergeCube in action using the Museum Viewer app (coming soon). How can this type of access to museum artifacts transform our classrooms? #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
A1: It's literally a museum in the palm of your hand. Holding famous history & sculptures from places most students will likely never travel to in their lifetime. #PersonalizedPD#MergeCube#MergeCubeEDU
A1: Accessing museums and other artifacts can bring things to life for kids. My son studied ancient cultures this year & loved seeing some of the things he learned about! #PersonalizedPD
Excited to jump in! Our district has a #personalizedlearning pathway for 2nd thru 12th. Elementary we have done away with grade level focus. #personalizedPD
A2: anytime learners can explore and discover new learning it is powerful because then we can support them with deeper learning questions and information. #personalizedPD
A2: I could see so many possibilities. We do an Interacting Systems unit, this would be great for them to view the different parts and how they work. Also, I think it would be a great additional resource for our pig dissection. #PersonalizedPD#mergecube
A2: In the context of studying the human body. Mine also enjoy using the Mr. Body app. The beating heart model in AnatomyVR has a WOW factor. #personalizedPD
A2: We have used both AnatomyAR and MrBodyAR with students. And they love it! they can freely explore the body at their own pace, AR is a great way to build confidence too - reducing apprehension and maybe embarrassment that say a video could cause. #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU
It's real, totally real! I try not to admit how much money I've spent on those cute cubes, but it's a real addiction. Glad to have you here tonight! #personalizedPD
A2. Such a great tool for health and science. So engaging and can see the organs from all angles. It’s even moving to show the functionality. Can’t get that in a textbook. #personalizedPD
A2 Would be so awesome for students in bio, or other courses in science, health, phys ed, being able to explore closely, better understand shapes, functions, location #personalizedpd#ARVRinEDU#mergecube
A2: I was showing this to some of my teachers this week. To be able to hold a beating heart in your hand and move it around is amazing! How else could elementary kids be exposed to anatomy with this detail? #PersonalizedPD
A2 When actual dissections are getting fewer and fewer.... AR to the rescue. Learning about the body by "seeing" how the body works, AWESOME #PersonalizedPD
A2. As soon as possible. Students curiosity starts in an early age. Why not start preparing them with technology available at an early age. This will help them develop more in the elementary years. #personalizedPD@MergeVR
There are various apps that work with the cubes and when you view the cube in those apps, they do amazing things. I'm sharing those apps tonight and more. #personalizedPD
A2. What a great way to intro a unit. I imagine Ss would continuously return to watch it repeatedly. Wouldn't it be amazing if one day they we can get a heart scan and then somehow view our own heart this way. How much healthier would we be? #ARVRinEDU#PersonalizedPD
A2: Whether anatomy or something else not easily seen, this type of learning is one more way to help students visualize their learning. Differentiation at its best! #personalizedpd
A2 Experiential learning is crucial - often times the content is abstract, but when students can see it, manipulate it, and contextualize it, their understanding skyrockets. #personalizedPD
A2: @MergeVR Apps like AnatomyAR app allow for not just a consumption of knowledge but an experience of content. PS- if you haven't used it- quick download- its AWESOME! #ExpandYourBrain! #ARVRinEDU#personalizedpd
A2: Any time students can be engaged and hands-on, even if it is virtual, then it is a win! My personal kids and I have played with the Human body apps - it is amazing to be able to see & hold different parts - something we could never do normally. #PersonalizedPD
Q3: Moving into interaction, check out the 57º North app by @mighty_coconut. Customize the experience as you set the direction of the story. What are your predictions about the future of storytelling in the #MergeCube? #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
#PersonalizedPD#MergeCube#ARVRinEDU@jcdempsey3 I got to experience a merge cube today in class and let me tell you... this is what the world is coming to. Having a game in the palm of our hands is great for students to learn. Amazing!

A1 Oh my goodness - SIX SIDED STORIES ... instead of the popular six-word stories. Challenge students to narrate/illustrate a story with ALL SIX SIDES OF THE #MERGECUBE#PersonalizedPD
A3 Oh my goodness - SIX SIDED STORIES ... instead of the popular six-word stories. Challenge students to narrate/illustrate a story with ALL SIX SIDES OF THE #MERGECUBE#PersonalizedPD
A3: #AR brings the story to life. It can animate the characters, make the setting come alive, and customizes the experience for the user. #personalizedPD#mergeCube

A3: I've not had the pleasure of testing the 57º North app (hint hint @MergeVR 🙃) But I am excited about the idea of storytelling in VR and AR and also students creating 360º scenes on their own. #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU
In reply to
@JaimeDonally, @Mighty_Coconut, @MergeVR, @MergeVR
A3. This is a great idea to engage students. It teaches them that there is more than one path to an end, mich like problem solving. It allows them to see different view points. It gives them choice. #personalizedPD@MergeVR
#PersonalizedPD A2. To engage learners into deeper understanding and to get them to research , to probably have them focus more in class and to help them stay interested in my subject I'd love this
A3. It would be amazing to see students be able to create/tell their own stories. Or could use with writing to narrate/tell a story you’re interacting with. Could have historical adventures. #PersonalizedPD
A3: It depends how successful the app is in sales. I have access to the development tools, and such development requires a great deal of invested time. I hope it’s successful and promotes story-based problem-solving apps in the future. #personalizedPD

A3. This experience will help reluctant readers. Many of mine love Patrick Carman b/c of his mashing of text & video. This would draw them in also since they can impact the story by their choices. #ARVRinEDU#PersonalizedPD
A3: The 57º North app by @mighty_coconut is a great way to have students become invested in their learning outcomes. If you are part of the process you care about the results, so apps like these can only lead to higher achievement. #MergeCube#personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
A3 I will have to check out this app! I love the idea of “choose your own adventure”-style, as well as Ss creating their own stories, or an app that serves as a storytelling enhancer-mood music, sound effects and lighting to go with real aloud/performance #PersonalizedPD
#PersonalizedPD A3. New idea for me ...I can already feel the excitement surging and if I am excited it's easy to bring the Ss onboard new techniques of learning and keeping the focus on...so much more to learn in life ....am so looking forward
Merge Cubes sold at a nearby Wal-mart for $1 eachbfor a short time. Sadly, I didn’t get there in time for more to add to our collection. #PersonalizedPD
Sorry to be late-tweet deck is not my friend tonight. Nikki McDorman, Castleberry ISD in Fort Worth TX- A1: this is so cool- to be fully immersed in the story or lesson. A part of it, and not a spectator! #PersonalizedPD
A3: We can make immersive experiences for Ts, too! In Feb, I led a Mardi Gras makerspace complete with jazz music, French Quarter road signs and King Cake! #wiseduchat#personalizedPD
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
You think you are just strolling along in this chat and then boom! It hits you...you must say something about that question.
We would love to hear your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool.
Q4: I’ve shared a video of one of my favorite #MergeCube apps called Object Viewer (due to release soon). This app allows you to upload your own 3D content. How can you use this type of app in your classroom? #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
Merge Cubes sold at a nearby Wal-mart for $1 each for a short time. Sadly, I didn’t get there in time for more to add to our collection. #PersonalizedPD
A2: can you imagine no longer needing to dissect animals in a lab? You could explore organs up close and much more accurately than with 2D images in a book! #PersonalizedPD
My limited experience with the #MergeCube doesn’t allow me to participate as much, but my “things I need to try” list in Google Keep is growing rapidly! Can’t wait to try some of these apps out, keep them coming. #PersonalizedPD#ARVRinEDU
Q3: Moving into interaction, check out the 57º North app by @mighty_coconut. Customize the experience as you set the direction of the story. What are your predictions about the future of storytelling in the #MergeCube? #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
I'll share a link at the end to my @EdSurge post that includes the link to find the cheapest cubes near you PLUS the link to the printable cube (free). #personalizedPD
A3: This technology provides opportunities for students to explore and then empowers them create their own experiences and demonstrate their understanding. #MergeCube#personalizedpd
Q4: I’ve shared a video of one of my favorite #MergeCube apps called Object Viewer (due to release soon). This app allows you to upload your own 3D content. How can you use this type of app in your classroom? #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
A4: This would be great for some of our students who are creating and designing with @tinkercad to see their objects right in front of them in the context of their world. #PersonalizedPD
Q4: I’ve shared a video of one of my favorite #MergeCube apps called Object Viewer (due to release soon). This app allows you to upload your own 3D content. How can you use this type of app in your classroom? #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
A3: what a way to bring stories to life and include you in them! I would love to see real history stories enacted this way for social studies! #PersonalizedPD
We all have the ability now to be consumers of information AND creators. We should create. Students should create. Let's get started!
#personalizedPD#mergecube#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
Q4: @MergeVR cube Object viewer allows Ss to create an object, then share it with the world. Combining creativity & collaboration makes it limitless both in terms of global learning but also in terms of imagination. Thoughts & ideas come alive! #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU
A4: OOH I can see our PLTW classes and Architecture classes using this to build their projects virtually before building the physical prototype. Or having our Spec Ed Ss map out their daily activities and how to do laundry, turn on oven, etc. #PersonalizedPD#MergeCube
A4 Great opportunity to practice Design Thinking and then get to discuss/hold/manipulate their creation in the real world! Plus it's a lot faster than waiting for the 3D printer... #personalizedPD
A4: I have been testing it too (check out the Merge Educators page on Facebook) and we will look to use it along with 3D printing. It is a great way for students to "double check" their items before finalising them to be printed - saves us filament too! #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU
A4 Please tell me this will be free? Paid apps don’t work great in my set up. I have a million ideas for it! Students creating a cultural artifact, teacher showing students a cell, a plant, a historical artifact, etc, replacing the diorama...many PBL applications! #personalizedPD
A4 I am really looking forward to the object viewer coming out!!! My students are currently creating models of their inventions in @tinkercad ... won’t it be amazing when they (and others!) can manipulate their creations in their hands digitally? #PersonalizedPD
A4 Students can create their own AR museum artifacts to demonstrate learning. Teachers can pull in any 3D design to help students visualize a subject #PersonalizedPD
Q5: Spoiler Alert! There’s an app a brewin that is upcoming by @el_chakka. It’s called Replica and here’s a hint...the cube is customizable. What kind of apps would you like to see for the #MergeCube? #personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU@MergeVR
A4: the sky is the limit! I can make my own 3D content? I'm imagining kids' biography projects or science fair projects going to the next level! #PersonalizedPD
A5 Can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have a #MergeCube app for Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes #VR game? We play it on @htcvive in our lab and it is GREAT. Wonderful way to pratice communication & collab. https://t.co/0KjlZrzCLQ#PersonalizedPD
A5: I would like to see an app with location-based sensitivity that will allow the Merge Cube to transform into different content based upon geolocation. #personalizedPD
A5 where do I start? Effect of forces. Structure of an atom. Each element with atomic structure, native form and reaction. Types of cells in the blood. ok, there are a few..... #personalizedpd
A5 Also app where #MergeCubes interact w/ each other. Can set properties of one #MergeCube changing based on being touched by another - could set up science reactions, equations in Math, CYoAs in ELA, etc. #PersonalizedPD
I’d love to see something that allows you to use multiple cubes together or multiple devices on one cube (sharing the same view simultaneously) #PersonalizedPD#MergeCube
This is one of my FAVORITES to play with the Ss!!! There is a #MergeCube app that has a similar feel, but no manual to follow. Check out Defused! if you haven't already! #PersonalizedPD
A5: @MergeVR cube apps I would like to see? Music- I think students creating music in a visual and active way would be awesome. Also- interactive maps with a time period attached. #ARVRinEDU#personalizedpd
A5: Maybe they have some already, but I’d like to see apps that allow my students to dive into favorite books somehow - be a part of that world. #PersonalizedPD
A5: I would love to have my students build their own content- kind of like a book report or science fair project but with content on each face. I feel like there is so much potential that I can't even see yet #PersonalizedPD
A5: I like the idea of a customizable cube where students can demonstrate their learning using this technology to create intereactive presentations for their peers. #Mergercube#personalizedpd
A5b: How about a Merge Cube app that tracks the motion of the Merge Cube for physics experiments and provides data? Of course the Merge Cube could become an augmented brick, ball, or other item in motion. #personalizedPD
I’d love to see something that allows you to use multiple cubes together or multiple devices on one cube (sharing the same view simultaneously) #PersonalizedPD#MergeCube
A5 More free apps. It would be awesome if there was one for students to create stories from scratch. One for earth science (Earth’s layers, volcanoes, etc.). An interactive historical event storyline. #personalizedPD
A5: Oh boy! So many ideas... I would like to see some sort DNA/ genetics experience and engineering connections to name a couple... I'm sure as I continue to play more ideas will follow. #PersonalizedPD
A5c: What about a Merge Cube app that adapts the augmented images to “marker” items near it, like popular logos or other streamlined content? #personalizedPD
Q* Question for all you folks in the #mergecube#PersonalizedPD thread: what devices are you using? School bought, student owned? Tablets? Phones? #Cardboard headsets?
A5 I love the ideas I am seeing. Biomes with landforms and living things in it. Food webs...what happens when you remove an animal? More simulations... #PersonalizedPD
Whether about a #MergeCube or other #edtech story, we'd love to see your story submitted this week for the Stories in EDU Book. https://t.co/qcPmZOOhnt A rough draft? You can do that, right? :) Join other educators as we share our stories. #personalizedPD#wiseduchat
A5: My 6th grade son just told me this: If all the students have a merge cube and a T has one, and the T can project what is on the T cube onto the Ss cube. "And he called himself so smart" #PersonalizedPD#MergeCube
A6: I'm new to Merge Cube, so I don't have a favorite- I saw the blog post earlier about merge cubes, but is there a complete list of all apps available? #PersonalizedPD
A6: My favorite Merge Cube app is Galactic Explorer because I teach planetary science. The students like seeing the different planets and reading the facts. I like that you can see where the planets are in relation to the sun. #personalizedPD
I’ve learned so much about the #MergeCube tonight from @JaimeDonally and the #PersonalizedPD chat. If you use cubes in your class check out the resources below. If you don’t, I recommend going to get one (or 30). They were $1-$4 at the different Walmarts around my house.
A6: I change my mind every day! But my elementary students enjoy Galactic Explorer. Simple to use, extremely visual, engaging and there is a lot of learning going on.
#personalizedPD#ARVRinEDU
A6: My favorites @MergeVR apps are the human body ones. They have just blown me away. Oh - and the Alamo one where the cannon goes off. So fun! I know there are so many more to explore too! #personalizedPD
A6: I really like the @MergeVR app Galactic Explorer for looking at planets. I also LOVE Hologlobe and am (IM)patiently waiting for iOS. #hurryplease#ARVR#personalizedpd
Yes!!!! With Chromebooks adapting Android apps (beta), we will see Chromebooks using the camera to explore apps now. It’s possible now!!! #personalizedPD
