A1: I think a big reason is that we are often teaching at a very low level...regurgitation is all they are doing. Ss need to have a deeper understanding and make a connection to remember down the road. #txed
A1: The learning is disconnected to their home schema & experiences is one factor. Another is some subject matters' relevance is a constant moving target #TXed
A1, P2: Maturity and valuation of what is important in life can be another. Neurological development's underestimation as a factor is yet another #TXed
A1. A few thoughts... it could be that they never really LEARNED it to begin with (only for the moment), it wasn't practical to their lives so it didn't resonate for future use, or they weren't taught how they could apply the learning in the future. #DontTeachForTheMoment#TXed
A1: Here in Texas, I believe we have too many standards to cover in each grade level so students don’t learn concepts as deeply as they could if we had fewer standards. #txed
A1: Lack of retention over time is often a result of limited exposure and usage, not spiraling back, not having anything to “attach” the learning too - like a closet with no hangers. New learning needs to be “hung” on previous experiences and learning. #txed
#txed A1 The learning wasn't INTRINSIC. When a Tr creates an environment in which the St WANTS to be in, the learning becomes INTRINSIC and is more likely not to be forgotten. This is my flowchart for creating an INTRINSIC learner.
A1: Here in Texas, I believe we have too many standards to cover in each grade level so students don’t learn concepts as deeply as they could if we had fewer standards. #txed
A1, P2 Point of clarification: Valuation of what is important in life is highly impacted by how needs are being met in all areas: malnourishment, lack of sleep, safe places: if these are missing valuation changes #TXed
A1: We have to cover so much material in such a limited time frame. Sometimes we have to slow it down. Deeper is sometimes more necessary than wider. #TXed
A1 i think a lot is not learned with complexity, depth and stored in long term storage in the brain. Maybe education needs to go real-world, deeper and hands on when possible! #txed
#txed A1 school is often so compartmentalised that students don't see/get the connections with their learning_if they don't make multiple connections it doesn't stick_loved the coathanger analogy @PrincipalVest
A1, P2 Point of clarification: Valuation of what is important in life is highly impacted by how needs are being met in all areas: nourishment, lack of sleep, safe places: if these are missing valuation changes #TXed
A1: I love that the TEKS breaks down the expectations for exactly what my kids need to know, but there are so many and all-encompassing that it becomes hard to build a deep understanding. #txed
A1: we have found that when we follow the scope and sequence we are missing out on front loading (to teach/review later in the year) the skills that our kids need for English in 7th...we need to look at adjusting to meet the needs better! #txed
A2: Small group instruction and learning conferences along with formative assessment are the only real ways to meet the individual needs of learners....and also take the most skill. #txed
A2. To begin with, we have to do a great job actually assessing and tracking individual levels. That is hard work. Lol. Secondly, planning is the key. Differentiate your instruction/approach, use modifications, 1X1 student data conferences, cater to their needs, and etc. #TXed
#txed A2: I know it is time & energy consuming but I conference with every student at least once a week even if I have a class of 25+ I also set up independent learning expectations so small groups are effective
A1, P2 Point of clarification: Valuation of what is important in life is highly impacted by how needs are being met in all areas: nourishment, sleep, safe places: if these are missing valuation changes #TXed
A2: knowing our kids they formative assessments and adjusting every moment of every day! Whole group , small group, individual... it all matters! #txed
A2-I try to preach this all the time, know your students. What do they like, what are their strengths, what areas do they need help in. Test and screeners can give you the data, but you have work to see where you can take them. #TXed
#txed A2 Politically correct answer #differentiation My #MorePower answer Create learning groups in your room containing at least 1 high level St in each group. Encourage peer tutoring. High level St will finish then tutor the lower kids. This is a dynamic classroom. #ItWorks
A2: We need to meet Ss where they are and move forward from there. This isn't a group activity...it needs to be small group or individual instruction most times. Authentic assessment is also important. Multiple choice won't cut it. #txed
A1: too many standards too little time. There is not enough time to create a foundation to build upon. Instead often times we teach a concept and move on before it becomes part of the foundation. #TXed
BOOM!! Love that answer! I get so frustrated when I hear Ts say "they should have learned that last year!" Start where they are and build on what they know! #TxEd
A2: good first instruction, personalized learning, checking for understanding and re-teaching. Then it’s important to provide different formative assessments and give immediate feedback. #TXed
A2: getting to know my students is key! what are their interests? how do they enjoy learning? i switch up my delivery for each class depending on their learning style & interests #TXed
#txed A3: no easy answer to this or we'd all be doing it!! I'm a story teller & a doodler_link learning to the senses & seems to stick better in my experience!!
A2: Build a relationship, then spend time discovering where the student is currently, next find his/her passion & help him/her align passion w/ subject to be learned & support in efforts as a team w/ parents/guardians #TXed
#txed A3 Make your classroom the greatest part of your Ss day. The kids WILL remember what happens. Your classroom should be an experience. This is an AMAZING 7 minute video a student made that shows how my rule #AlwaysBelieve in yourself inspires my Ss https://t.co/QyCVXGNNqe
A3. We could start by finding out what their interests are. As adults, we hold on to things that we find interesting. Students are the same. Find their interests and try to tie in the learning. It'll stick. #TXed
Differentiate stems to help students talk academically with peers. Talking=Sticky Best Practices in an ELL Classroom https://t.co/8CJMLSo8ct via @YouTube#TXed
A3: Make it relevant and appropriate for their level of understanding. Reading https://t.co/i21lm35IRc by @casas_jimmy and @Jeff_Zoul right now. They make a great case for how we need to teach at their current level, stop trying to "prepare them" by teaching above them. #txed
Totally agree and do, but this is exactly why we are constantly skimming the surface. There are a ton of skills they need in middle school, on top of those they aren't solid in. So we're meeting them where they are and reteaching skills that should have been mastered. #txed
A3: by instilling in them that each skill taught is not disposable; it builds upon the next one. forming connections between instruction and their personal lives is also great! #TXed
A2: small group, student inventories, one on one conferencing...but always keeping in mind growth for every kiddo is essential...so exposure and high expectations is key! Can’t be data rich and action poor. #TXed
A3: linking it throughout the year. Don’t teach it and forget it. Also making it relevant to students. If they understand how and why it helps outside of school they are more willing to grasp it and use it outside the classroom. #TXed
A3 Aside from making learning meaningful, front loading information, priming material, assessing formatively, and exposing Ss to as much meaningful content matters. #txed
A3: To make learning stick with students, we need to know where they are, where we need them to be, plan extensively, execute flawlessly, and celebrate progress endlessly. #itsabigjob#itsworthit#txed
It is a never-ending cycle. They are "behind" for a number of reasons. Each stop on their trip they are trying to catch up. That may also slow down the rest, causing an even bigger gap for everyone. #txed
A3: Helping students build connections with the material. Also, when they can explain their thinking and teach others, you can see how well they have learned the material. #TXed
Heck yeah! This is what I aim for. My own love of learning started when teachers blew my mind, gave me cool projects, and I was given choice and allowed to fail, try and succeed. I never remember my tests. #txed
A3: I think we first have to recognize what worked for us likely won’t work for kids today- brains are different . Relevant, Fun, Gamification, Problem Solving, working toward collaboration but all at a faster speed #txed
#txed A4: not a new idea but time & again I find it comes back to knowing the students as individuals & then making the connection so it sticks. If what we can't connect it to their lives, how do we expect them to??
Hey #TXed leaders! Greg- Pre-K, MD. Not sure if I’m entering at the tale end of the conversation, but just thought I’d check in and join in the fun. Hope all are well.
A4: We need to build an environment that excites Ss and find ways to get them to invest in their learning. They have to own it. Not easy by any means...but necessary to get Ss to reach full potential. #txed
“They’re reducing [state funding] by 7 percent and they’re requiring local property taxpayers to increase their contributions by 7 percent to pay for school finance. This is the main issue.” #txlege#txedhttps://t.co/T9p5MIcQct
#txed obviously I don't teach in the US so I hope you don't mind me randomly joining this chat_seems to be we have similar issues regardless of where we teach :)
A4: This is about connecting the learning to the real world in service-oriented ways where possible to foster reciprocal relationships with the communities surrounding the schools and larger world #TXed
#txed A4 Be PASSIONATE about the subject you teach. If the Ss sense you love your subject content they will be hooked into your lessons. This is a great quote from the Big Bang Theory. Entertain and Engage IS HUGE! When you do this the kids WILL REMEMBER your words.
Thanks, Paul! Important to give multiple opportunities and methods for Ss to demonstrate understanding of concepts. Combine with real-world application to reinforce the relevance and importance of the content. #txed
A4: Relevancy is key. Recently our 1st graders wrote friendly letters - to me suggesting school improvements, to a dog to help it solve some problems. They brought me their letters & got to share with the dog in person. The kids were ALL IN & the results were amazing. #txed

A5- Authentic engagement. Take time, MAKE time to truly get to know your students both academically and socially. Authentic connections are game-changers in the learning process. When they know you care... #TXed
A5: Talk to them! Interest inventories are another way, but a conversation is best here. If you can find what they like and then find time to watch them doing it, you will make a connection that will pay back 10 fold. #txed
#txed A5: again seems like a no brainer but I am surprised how many teachers don't do this_get to know your students as people_investing this time in building a relationship is never a waste of time or effort! 5 mins once a week just chat!
A5: Be intentional about talking to students. Seek them out. Morning conversations, lunches together, playing games together, asking questions and then more questions and then really listening #Txed
A4 I used to survey my class (and still do my groups) WhT makes you enjoy school? What’s hard for you? How can I help? What do I do that doesn’t help or makes it hard for you? #txed
A4: be ALL IN....there is no halfway for the adults if we want to kids to be all in! Kids need to see us being silly....so Teambuilders in front of/with the kids and relationships are key for us @PollyRyonMS#TXed

#txed A5 This is why you build relationships with the kids. Learn what makes them what they are. Education is ALL ABOUT the kids. The more you love and invest in the kids the greater a teacher you will become.
A5: by building relationship & getting to know students inside & outside of school. Attend school school events & extra curricular events outside of school. Show them you are their biggest cheerleader and advocate and that you believe in them no matter what. #TXed
A5: Be intentional about talking to students. Seek them out. Morning conversations, lunches together, playing games together, asking questions and then more questions and then really listening #Txed
#txed love this especially the games part_I have always had a games session at least once a fortnight regardless of the year level_reinforce skills/knowledge, have fun, get to know the Ss as people!!

A5: This is where get to know you activities at the beginning of the year can help. Also listening to small group conversations. Look at what they are reading, too. Be vulnerable & open up to students about life & passions being pursued. #TXed
Q6: Learning is more likely to stick if we can relate it to real-world experiences. What tricks do you have to give a lesson that real-world experience? #TXed
A5: love the kiddos. Dab. Floss. Find what they love lone and get involved. When they know you care they will listen a little more intently. (If you’re lucky!) #TXed

Systematically schedule one-on-one time to talk to students about anything not related to school. Find out who they are.
Commit to at least one student a day #TXed
#txed you guys have heard of #tlap right??? this book changed my attitude & teaching because it reminded me that if I'm not having fun then my Ss aren't either_well worth a read if you haven't_Teach Like a Pirate
Q6: Learning is more likely to stick if we can relate it to real-world experiences. What tricks do you have to give a lesson that real-world experience? #TXed
A6: This has actually become easier w/ the increase in virtual learning experiences: you can take a class to the Smithsonian from anywhere, have class w/ students in other countries, bring in speakers from various industries via video conference, or take an actual trip #TXed
#txed A6 Just be passionate about your subject content. If the kids see you love the what you are teaching they will invest in it. For over 20 years I have gone to work and pretended to be @ofctimallen Tim the Tool Man Taylor. The kids LOVE the #MorePower changts and grunts
A6: by tying their inatrests to the curriculum. One of my Ts has Ss research Tx Regions. The Ss the. searches a @FortniteGame map she created and found a region that matched the one they researched! They could explain all the Tx Regions so well!! #TXed
#txed A6: this is where my storytelling comes in_anecdotes from my life - even if I embelish them a little ;) _stories from the media that I make connections with_'remember whens' from our experiences together!
Q6: Learning is more likely to stick if we can relate it to real-world experiences. What tricks do you have to give a lesson that real-world experience? #TXed
A6: My rockstar teacher @AVyvial did just this to bring the selection to life for her students. We had some amazing debates and conversations happening in their Reading classrooms about Cecil The Lion. #TxEd
BINGO! @burgessdave is a game changer. I think all first-year teachers should read this book. Heck, all teachers should read this no matter how many years they have taught. #tlap#TXed
#txed you guys have heard of #tlap right??? this book changed my attitude & teaching because it reminded me that if I'm not having fun then my Ss aren't either_well worth a read if you haven't_Teach Like a Pirate
Thanks to everyone for joining in tonight. We had reps from different states and half-way around the world tonight! I hope you all have a great rest of the week. Don't forget to give some of your new friends a follow. See you next week on #txed
I think this is where an LMS or an @OneNoteEDU class notebook can come into play. It can guide those other students while you focus on catching a few others up. #txed
