Looking forward to Connecting For Kids tonight! I am Karen, co-founder of #eduAR! I am currently tweeting from the great state of North Carolina! @bethhill2829@Lindsey_Bohler
I am one of your moderators this evening, long with my soul EduSistas, @nortnik and @Lindsey_Bohler. We are exciting about chatting with the #EduAR PLN tonight!
A1. We have student led tours for incoming 6th graders and families; a tech “parent guide” to understand Middle school and we do face to face Parent Book Study. #EduAr

A1 Our school makes conscious efforts to engage families by in-person conversations, invitations to celebrations, automated phone calls, volunteer programs, classroom support requests, emails, student presentation programs, special event committees, feedback sessions, etc. #eduar
One ofthe schools I support has a parent literacy class 4 days/wk. Parents learn in their class, on field trips and even spend time learning next to their child in the Ss classroom. #TIS2Learn#EduAR
A1: I love to use social media to connect with families and to connect families with each other. We see families tagging each other in posts and celebrating each other's kids. Awesomeness. #EduAR
A1 one of my fav ways to engage parents & include them in the education process is with my use of what I named DDQs - Dinner Discussion Questions. I send topics to discuss at dinner via REMIND & sometimes I am filled in on the discussion 💛 #eduAR

A1: Sharing school info through @RemindHQ has become a standard as well as Twitter, Facebook, & Instagram. I like using @canva to make eye catching flyers and graphics! #eduAR
A1 One simple way I engage families is by being mindful to take photos that capture special moments in the classroom throughout the week. I send them out in emails to families! I want them to feel connected, and they love it! #EduAR
Q1: I've really enjoyed using ClassDojo to communicate with families, especially when I add pictures and videos to student portfolios. The parents love it and and the kids love seeing themselves do well! #EduAR
A1. Our awesome leaders & staff do so many positive engagement events! Stuff the bus, community nights at ballgames, Energy BUSiness of the month, grandparents day! But my favorite is Student Showcase- student learning PK-12! @StarCitySchools staff rocks! #EduAR#STEMeducation
Love the Class Dojo information sharing piece, Stacy. Some of the teachers in our district use the platform to highlight student learning activities to share with parents - allows them to see their Ss engaged in active learning @sbentonteach#eduar
A1 our team set a goal to send home at least one post card to every student in our grade - with a hand-written welcome .. good-to-Get-to-know-you cards ...by end of first term ... and we hit goal — one week early !! #eduAR
HUGE. I try to do this daily as a lead learner. Some days I miss out on taking pics for publishing on our social media sites or sending to individual families via Remind. Most days I meet the goal! #EduAR

A2. I try to capitalize on individual conversations where you develop mutual respect on “we both want what is best for your child”. I prefer face to face conversations but phone calls work too. #EduAr
A1: We engage families in a variety of ways at SHS. Ex: Open House, Student Led Conferences, & FAFSA College Night. We share school activities through social media sites and our Spanish & Marshallese Liaisons work hard to share info with our parents. #eduar
A1: We use @SmorePages to share our weekly celebrations and info. Some info stays in there all year as a resource, and other info is taken out and added. #EduAR
A1: Social media when used to celebrate learning creates conversations between children and their families when there may have previously been silence. #EduAR
A2: Positive notes home for 👍🏼 thumbs up expectations or noticings in class. Also, I connect with families on an individual basis through our community wide school events, like our carnival and cardboard creativity challenge! #EduAR
A2: I’ve never done it, but has anyone ever considered using @Flipgrid for engaging with parents of students? Maybe send a prompt out to parents to answer? #EduAR
A2 Our Ts make a concerted effort to share Ss individual learning goals and accomplishments during 1:1 conferences. This allows our Ts time to brag on the great work that our Ss do in their classes each day. Provides opportunities for us to celebrate Ss #eduar
A2 Being new to the district, I’m using the district website to upload pictures for parents to view with a revolving digital bulletin board of what’s going on at the campuses #EduAR
A2: That good ole phone call home to brag and celebrate is so worth it! Principals get a rep of being the messenger of bad news. :(
I want to break the mold and be someone families look forward to engaging with. #EduAR
A2: Being in multiple schools I don’t see the parents often. But when I see kiddos in the community I make a point to talk to the student & introduce myself to the parent. I mention how their child & I are learning together through the technology. #TIS2Learn#EduAR
A3: I like to write little notes and my signature heart and "H" on student work that goes home. It is a little thing that kids love and can share with their family! #EduAR
A2: I enjoy following up and conducting check ins. Some families feel forgotten after a situation has been resolved. I prefer them to feel remembered. #EduAR
A2.Our MS & Elementary Admin and staff both use Positive referrals and make personal calls! District/ Business Partners honors Students of month and families at Board Meetings! EnergyBusSchool #EduAR
A3 - a Remind I’ve sent a few times:
“Parents, please write a note to your child to encourage him/her, or congratulate him/her. Mail/send to me to SAVE for the RIGHT time. Thx!💜”
I have these letters sent in to me to save for the best time to share.

A3: In a previous building I taught in teachers/principals/classified staff could all give out an award when they recognized students doing great things. They would have a monthly reception for the award winners. #EduAR
A4. Hard conversations are much easier if you have built up trust and rapport with parents. That is why we must always be working on relationships. #EduAr
A3 Dance parties, positive office referrals and phone call home, twitter shout out, and verbal affirmations to cultivate celebration throughout a student’s day. #eduAR
A3 I take lots of pics .. and pic collage them and share them on our school Facebook page and on twitter... celebrating the awesomeness of our kids Also, sometimes during class, I just snap a candid and quickly email to parent - getting a smile during their day 📸 #eduAR
A4: I think the best way to have a hard convo end positive is to have multiple positive conversations early and often. Lay that positive foundation quickly! #TIS2Learn#EduAR
A2: When ss are doing something fun, I am like the paparazzi!!! I am working on creating a shared folder in Google Photos to shareall the pics I take. I post them on Twitter (alone, in a collage, or a movie) but I only have like 10 followers, lol!!! #EduAR
A4 By starting with the positive first. There is something to celebrate in every child no matter the circumstance. When parents know we SEE the beauty in their child and truly love them, they trust us, and listen with their hearts. It makes all the difference in the world. #EduAR
A4: Sit down and have calm and respectfully honest conversations. Always remind them, and yourself, that everyone involved wants what is best for the student. #EduAR
A3: By taking time to sit down and actively listen. To ensure that the light not only shines on the accomplishment but also shines on the person as well. #EduAR
A4 Build the relationship before there’s a problem or issue. Be open with the family and point out the good as well as the difficult. Be open to trying what works with the parent and be a team. #eduAR
A3:A3: When a student meets a goal, he/she gets to ring the "Goal" Getter Bell! Everyone in the building stops and cheers when the bell is heard! #eduAR
A4: Sit down and have calm and respectfully honest conversations. Always remind them, and yourself, that everyone involved wants what is best for the student. #EduAR
A4: Howdy #eduAR from Barbara in TX. Courageous convos go better when you've made those connections and relationships up front. Make sure you're building trust waaaaaay before those tough talks have to happen. They MUST know you love and care about them and their child!
A2 #eduAR Every Friday, families are invited to our classroom's book talks and author's chair presentations. I send home special invitations for students assigned to present, but all are welcome.

A4: With careful delivery....one essential key is to ensure that families believe that we are truly partners in the process before approaching the issue. Without trust, it becomes impossible to move forward in a productive fashion. #EduAR
A3. We have monthly Family Rally’s to celebrate Perfect Attendance, Student of the Month, Staff Member of the Month, AND new this month...Academic Growth Student of the Month!!! #eduAR
A3 #eduAR This is one I am working on besides in classroom celebrations like finger claps, high fives, etc. I send brags on remind or social media without revealing identities. I try to post pictures of special activities, but I need to be more intentional with this.

A4. Relationships > Fear. Engagement matters, if the family trust the school & sees our passion to help the child, the conversation is not about who wins. #EduAR
While we’re on the subject, here’s your friendly reminder that all Parent & Family Engagement Plans are supposed to be published on your school site by Oct 21st! 😉 That’s the new Federal Programs Director in me talking! 😆😆😆 #EduAR

A5: Families love knowing what's going on inside the school's walls. Send info home digitally and on paper. Invite them in when you can. Post what you're doing on social media. Use @Flipgrid or @Seesaw to involve and engage. Happy partnering! #eduAR
A5: Support my Ts & Admin w/tools and ideas for sure. And be more consistent w/pics and posts when there are great things happening in the classrooms! #EduAR#TIS2Learn
A5 #eduAR Tomorrow, I can take pics of booktalk slideshow presentations to share with families. In the near future, I want to steal the idea of @AmyBraswell726 and involve families in more day to day activities, like journal writes or maybe blogs/vlogs.

That makes me so happy! It’s truly my favorite way to connect families to our classroom. At the end of the year it becomes this magnificent artifact/treasure of our time together! So special! #EduAR
