#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
Welcome to #6thchat! Please introduce yourself, where you teach and what subjects. I am Kristin and will moderate tonight's chat. I teach ELA and SS in Lansing, MI.
A1) Notice & Note Strategies for Close Reading by @KyleneBeers My students have enjoyed learning the strategies and frequently tell me they have examples from their independent books; My Ss get more out of their reading & love finding "evidence" of the signposts! #6thchat
I am Kimberlie and I teach 6th grade self contained..I teach it all! My school is in Southern California and is named Somis Elementary, we are very small tk-8th grade one class per grade. I love to read and can't wait for tonight's discussion
#6thchat
I really enjoy how organic the discussion is...my students love to say "I have an example of a Words of the Wiser moment when..." etc. It is best to let them discover these on their own! Glad you have a similar positive experience, too! #6thchat
A2) Helping our Ss be prepared for their life in an unpredictable world is a topic I have been very interested in. So, I nominate Future Driven by @DavidGeurin for this category! I consistently consider lessons and how they will help to prepare my Ss for the future. #6thchat
A1: Love these amazing paired texts, new additions to my professional library! Must haves for all middle grades ELA teachers! Great, practical, turnkey ideas that make sense. Awesomeness! #6thchat
A1: I have to say this is an odd answer. I would have chosen “Teach Like a Pirate if I hadn’t read questions beforehand. going to have to go with “On the Death of Childhood and Destruction of Public Schools.” Made me angry about testingz made me challenge status quo. #6thchat
A2: @PaulSolarz's Learn Like a Pirate and @pernilleripp's Passionate Learners both have strongly influenced my classroom environment and culture! #6thchat
I love @drgravityg books! I also enjoy her Mindsets and Moves book, too! I don't have these...just popped them into my Amazon cart!! Thanks @staceyreeder#6thChat

A3) This year, I nominate Hacking the Writing Workshop: Redesign with Making in Mind by @AngelaStockman. Her book has pushed my thinking on my writing workshop. Her book has been transformational to my practice and classroom environment this year. Love firestarters! #6thchat
A1: For me, it'd be something written by Oliver Sacks. Not a 'how to' but rather viewpoint of difference. His work pushes the envelope of our understanding of the atypical developement #6thchat
A3: My nominee for most Out if the Box Ideas would be (at this current moment) Word Nerds. I’m working on vocabulary Instruction and this has some stellar ideas. #6thChat
A2: I'm still digesting Inquiry Mindset. This will guide my room soon. The disruption I'm looking forward to as well will be Lifelong Kindergarten. #6thchat
A5) I think A Long Walk To Water by @LindaSuePark continues to spark class discussion. I use it in Social Studies to talk about migration, refugees, immigration, natural resources, and more. So many books for this category! #6thchat
A6: Two read alouds that inspired class discussion among my 6ths = @AlanGratz's Refugee and @JerrySpinelli1's Milkweed. Both tackle tough topics and 6ths talk & talk abou these stories! Getting ready to read @DanGemeinhart's new Coyote Sunrise & know they'll love it too! #6thchat
One of my all time favorite books and authors @PatriciaPolacco My students are learning a lot from her books through my #classroombookaday as I am reading most of her books throughout the year! Junkyard Wonders is terrific. #6thChat
A6) Gordon Korman's 6th Grade Nickname Game book always makes my kids laugh but he has a new one out I want to read called the Unteachables that might compete for this one. #6thchat
We will be reading @AlanGratz Refugee after A Long Walk to Water. So I begin that next week! WE also read Amal Unbound...all terrific ties to our Social Studies curriculum with migration/refugees/immigration...timely topic! #6thChat

Love Junkyard; Thank you Mr. Falker; Bully; Holes in the Sky; The Keeping Quilt; Christmas Tapestry; and my students absolutely loved Trees of the Dancing Goats that we read at the holidays. #6thChat
Great! Would love any/all resources! Our school read Amal Unbound but 6th grade said we'd read Refugee when we begin the unit on migration, population, immigration, refugees, etc., in our World Geography curriculum! Looking forward to it! #6thchat

A7) I really enjoy reading Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher. The characters are great and the story gets kids thinking. It never gets old to read to the class. #6thchat
A7: @LindaSuePark's A Long Walk to Water tops this list for me. Salva's story NEVER get's old and always inspires. I also love Jennifer Nielsen's The False Prince. It's a great book -- and the twists SHOCK students every time! #6thchat
A7 I would nominate Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie by @JSonnenblick We just finished it today and every group of students I have read it to have loved it. #6thchat
Thanks for all the great book "award" nominations tonight on #6thchat! Will have to check some out of the library and purchase others! Looking forward to new reading! #6thchat
Important Announcement on #6thchat! Beginning next week, our chat will continue at 9pm on Tuesdays, but it will end at 9:40. We'll discuss a total of 6 questions instead of 8. Hope this helps everyone get more sleep and participate a little more. Let's try it! :) See you then!
Great! Now...I just need a bit more time in the day! I overhead a student talking about A Long Walk to Water today and he said, "Oh good, we are reading it some more today...I love that book! It's the best book I've ever read! I don't want to stop!" Love that! #6thchat
