#moedchat A1: I can say what I mean. I mean genuinely asking Ss for feedback on what's going well and what isn't clear or needs to change. Hearing their ideas and responding to them. Trying out their suggestions. Letting THEM design the bag-storage for the lunch area!
A1 #moedchat whomever is doing the talking is in charge of the learning. Empowerment of S voice shares responsibility for Learning with Ss, helps them take steps towards coherency and composing their thoughts---that's part of the learning process
A1: I enjoy allowing students to use their voices to make choices in my classroom. I'm getting ready to present a mastery learning proposal for our high school that would allow students much more choice #moedchat
A1. Honoring student voice in the decision making process in the classroom, in school organizations, and in leading out school-wide activities. #MOedchat
A1 Giving Ss opportunity to be heard and to express themselves. Whether it be in discussion during a lesson, classroom decisions, or even the posters you put on the walls. #moedchat
#moedchat A1: When Ss told me in AP Stats that some didn't want to take the AP exam and would rather develop a project for their final grade...I gave full support. I have no idea how to evaluate this, but I don't care. We will work on that together. They are leading!
A1) But it's also allowing them to speak to the world, sharing their day through a tweet, their thoughts and dreams through a blog or picture. #moedchat
A1: I enjoy allowing students to use their voices to make choices in my classroom. I'm getting ready to present a mastery learning proposal for our high school that would allow students much more choice #moedchat
A1. Providing many opportunities for students to have ownership in their learning experience. But Ts must be prepared for too much v&c. Ss might freeze up like a kid in the candy store.
#toomanyoptions#brainoverload#moedchat
A1.2 one issue though is when Ss have done nothing but "play school" their entire education giving them voice and choice there last two years scares many of them. More than once I've be given the response of, "Can't we just do worksheets or essays?" #moedchat
This happens to me all the time. We "School" the voice and creativity out of students. It really is hard for some students to realize they even have a voice. #moedchat
A1) But it's also allowing them to speak to the world, sharing their day through a tweet, their thoughts and dreams through a blog or picture. #moedchat
A1. Honoring student voice in the decision making process in the classroom, in school organizations, and in leading out school-wide activities. #MOedchat
A2 #moedchat@Touchpebbles is one example. Ss learn how to run their own civil discussions on topics unfamiliar to most of them. (https://t.co/9cByim2So8) I've used it for over 20 years with MS students, HS students, and teachers.
Listening is the crucial part. You MUST listen. Even when an Ss idea seems silly or bad. Nothing is more devastating that a kid feeling you don't honor/respect their ideas and thoughts. #moedchat
A2 goal setting, building your classroom expectations with them, using STUCO to help lead the students, having student advisory committees, PBL #moedchat
A2.b #moedchat Part of Voice is knowing how to drive own inquiry and, thus, how to ask solid questions. @RightQuestion and the Question Formulation Technique is a staple in my classroom. https://t.co/x51DSwQfC4
#moedchat A2: In addition to A1, I also allowed Ss I gave AP Stats Ss the opportunity to tell me ANYTHING in the class that needed to change or stay the same. And I followed it. In spite of 19 yrs teaching experience. Or perhaps because of it.
A2.c Purpose Projects/20% Time. Student inquiry drives learning--That's huge voice as it's actually saying, "Hey, we're negotiating this curriculum together." No "Sage on stage" or even "Guide on Side" but, as @GingerLewman says, "Meddler in middle" for the T #moedchat
A2 I have a kid who was frustrated with the Chromebook cart and organization, he has now recruited a group to organize and ensure charging of all my devices each day, he even sets up kids to do it when he is out #boom#leader#moedchat
A2: Student voice can be simple or complex. This past year I utilized Google Forms to allow students to choose what we would offer in afterschool program this year. Attendance is way up! #moedchat
A2 Giving choice on projects or assessment techniques. Giving students freedom to complete projects that align with their personal interests and goals. #moedchat
A2. I work with small groups all day long, so I take the opportunity to ask them for feedback about our class and what I can do to better serve them! They get so excited when I implement their idea! #MOedchat
A2.2 I like to also ask Ss to give suggestions on what works/doesn't work in class. In my CP LA2 class this year I encouraged Ss to use their voice to promote something around school including change. However some only wanted to promote mirrors in the boys bathrooms. #moedchat
A2) We were building models and a Ss asks, "Can I use Minecraft for my model?" Heck yes! That's the introduction to my addiction to MC and how Ss can get excited about an assessment! #moedchat
A2b I like ideas like genius hour or 20% time -- just think it's a shame we have to market, name, and advertise for something that we should all be doing anyway -- giving students freedom to pursue their interests. #moedchat
Q2: ask Ss what they like and don’t like about subjects, lessons, school in general. We do a daily morning meeting where Ss give shoutouts and voice concerns and celebrations. TALK to them any chance you get and actually LISTEN with intent to understand and change. #moedchat
A2b: When I taught fourth grade, I incorporated student voice in projects. I gave them certain expectations and guidelines and they decided what topic. Again, interest was up. #moedchat
I like to give Ss the opportunity to have voice in evaluative feedback in these cases as well. We use google forms to evaluate and provide feedback on projects and presentations. Voice on both ends. #moedchat
A2. We will play the Leadership Game for Teens once a quarter. It's excellent for honoring their voice and opinions, as well as peer recognition! #MOedchat
#moedchat A3: Are you ready to move on to today's new idea or do you still need a few min. to talk about the homework? Do you think you'd be ready for an assessment tomorrow or do you need another day? Do you feel like holding the maker today or engaging from your seat?
A3. They know how they learn best! They choose how and where they complete certain rotations each day. Several have stepped up to take care of our library and tech needs! #MOedchat
It's just typical that when we give kids freedom they will resent it because they are so used to worksheets and textbooks. It takes time, practice, and modeling. #moedchat
A3 I always did class rules in a Google Doc. Everyone opened it up and we added and edited together. Everyone has a voice. And every class is different with what's fair and what they can live with. #moedchat
A3 #moedchat Seating and class environment is part of the system/operations, so using design thinking to ask "How might we create a classroom that bias Ss towards active learning" and then DOING it...https://t.co/ZYmqnUK0Sj
A2. You're doing a PBL project and instead of everyone doing a written report, someone could:
- song
- PSA video
- animation
- research report
- presentation
- #moedchat

#moedchat A3: Are you ready to move on to today's new idea or do you still need a few min. to talk about the homework? Do you think you'd be ready for an assessment tomorrow or do you need another day? Do you feel like holding the marker today or engaging from your seat?
A2 Most impressive example is that we used #stuvoice to design the #smmaschool Innovation Lab. Ss who graduated come back & still take pride in what they created. Talk fondly about the process & enjoy seeing what has changed & stayed the same. Amazing experience! #moedchat
A3: Student voice can be utilized the set up of the classroom including expectations. When given the opportunity, they will surprise you with what they come up with. #moedchat
Q1: students believe (and actually do) have a say in what goes on at their school. They feel valued and listened to because when they talk adults listen and make changes accordingly when possible. Students are empowered to take ownership of their learning experience #moedchat
A3) How does our seating area look? Draw me something new? Yes, we can have free seats today! No, you may not eat, but thank you for asking! Yes, you may work anywhere in the room. It's the little things! #moedchat
A3.
ELE: Start small, 2-3 choices and go/grow from there. Centers are a great way to start.
SEC: keep it authentic explaining how v&c works in the real world.
#moedchat
The classroom design thing is so underrated. Ts always coming in all summer putting up big decorations and themes....kind of sad that they waste that opportunity to let the Ss own the space. #moedchat
A3: especially in my CP classes, it starts with the first product based summative: I give them the format OR topic and then the skills/standards and let them make it their own. #moedchat
Q3: they help me decide what books to buy for our library, topics for guided reading books, general design and format of lessons, they help create procedures and expectations for our classroom, we are frequently asked to model lessons - they take pride in that! #moedchat
A4 Ss on my debate team organized to become leaders of the transition once I stepped down after 23 years as coach. They are teaching the new teacher moderators what it's all about! #moedchat
A4 we need to do a better job of this I’m open to suggestions. However we did have two students want to start a student driven and Pokémon club and it has been a huge hit #moedchat
A4: Club sponsors work very hard to encourage Ss leadership. Club presidents have a role to fill and aren't just figure heads. Our STUCO actually gets meetings scheduled with our P in order to make their and the Ss body's voices heard #moedchat
I did that my first couple years, realized it was a waste of my time. Now I don’t really decorate at all. When kids make something, I usually put it up until they take it home. They control it #moedchat
A4 Turn over as much responsibility as possible to student groups- our STUCO plans and leads all of our assemblies- and they are SOOO much better than the adult-led ones #MOedchat
A4. Find the gifts in the students. Leadership comes in many different forms. Your troubled Ss have HUGE influence on others. They have great leadership qualities! Start there. Involve them. You'd be surprised by the ideas and greatness they have untapped!
#realtalk#moedchat
A4.b #moedchat After 23 years in debate, I thought I'd take a break, then a S comes to me, says, "I just need a T to be there" so he can start a robotics team. I'm all like, "Can I play/learn too?!" He's organizing, talking to neighboring teams...He's all over it.
A5: Student leadership is more widely used in the junior high and high school. We are looking at ways to allow more ownership at the elementary level. #moedchat
Q4: Ss run announcements and serve as helpers/Ts to younger students. I sponsor KKids, they listed issues at our school and brainstormed solutions. They’re putting them in action including PSAs, signage, community service & building relationships w peers to get feedback #moedchat
A4 StuCo is a start, but Student Council usually only represents one type of student. Create leadership teams/classes with students selected from the broader student body. #moedchat
A4. One T saw the "rough Ss" and created a rap/spoken word extra curricula lunch group... Talking about greatness! They recorded several tracks and sell them during lunch time. #hustlehard#moedchat
A4b our art club sponsor @LittletonART has gone to a student driven and led art club with students deciding what they want to learn and they even teach the lessons. #moedchat
#moedchat A4: Honestly, I see most schools give students titles. I do not see schools genuinely give Ss decision making leadership roles. The titles/roles they have are basically scripted year to year. Leadership is unscripted.
Let the kids find a problem and then immediately acknowledge it and ask them what needs to be done. You’ll be amazed at what they can do if you get out of their way and just be a resource #moedchat
A4. Four years ago we transformed how we design and lead out our Veterans Day Celebration (kudos to @KirsteenMJames ). Student leaders MC and take on several facets of this celebration day! #moedchat
#moedchat A4: Honestly, I see most schools give students titles. I do not see schools genuinely give Ss decision making leadership roles. The titles/roles they have are basically scripted year to year. Leadership is unscripted.
A3. Students get a stake in the classroom. It’s not my classroom, it’s our classroom. We have meaningful discussions and collaborate together on the rules & procedures. #MOedchat#CavsPLN
A1 - Empowering student voice happens when you give Ss choices and allow opportunities for Ss to provide feedback. This active participation builds classroom community and pride. #moedchat
A5 actively seeking student leadership input is key- it’s THEIR event, they know so much better than the adults what will resonate with their peers #MOedchat
A5 #moedchat Hoping this isn't unusual, but in our strategic planning we always involve students. I worked with a student in my Design Thinking class who planned a school-wide Winter Arts showcase
Ha, DONE!
I'm watching you from my office. ;-)
I have snicker bars for cranky #MOedchat people who will be at #METC18 Meet-Up, so be sure to register, @wmchamberlain
And I am prepping METC TV live stream for those #notatMETC18#METCpd

Q5: I would love to implement a student leadership team to help with planning of all school wide events. Get down to what kids connect with and allow them to HELP us. They’re capable of so much and after all school is for THEM, they should invest as well as benefit #moedchat
A5 Students are perfect for greeting guests, planning assembly activities, service positions, and even presenting during those school-wide events. #moedchat

#moedchat A5: I'll double down here. It is important to ask: Are S "leaders" simply answering the Qs admins ask (the same Qs you asked last year's S-"leaders") in making decisions? Or are the S-leaders asking the questions? Huge difference when it comes to genuine leadership.
A4. You can use your academic lab or homeroom (we use out Character Connection Class) the empower student leadership. @kaseykathleen23 ‘s CCC is creating kindness rocks and will chart their travels. #moedchat
A5) Our Mental Health Awareness plans an a great program for our high school. We are planning for next year, our middle school student to plan our PRIDE assemblies as well. #moedchat
A5b You can do something like #StudentPD and have the students decide what happens during the school event entirely. Have them choose the content and presenters they want to learn from. Shout out to @Erin_Lawson3. #moedchat

I'm not sure it takes time. It takes an adult leader willing to let go.....today. It's never going to be perfect. Let it be imperfect.....TODAY. #moedchat.
If a kid has been “institutionalized” by a system of compliance, it will take them a minute to understand that they have any control, I’m just saying a culture of #studentvoice is needed and you can’t just flip the switch and they’ll take charge without guidance #moedchat
Isaiah Sterling, student leader here. Just popping in! I think that students need to get involved in educator professional development. Without student voice, educators have nothing. Educators must listen to the heart of education. #moedchat
I too am heading off early, too much indoor recess for me this week! I hope to see and connect with anyone at #metc18 and chat with those #notatMETC18 people too! Happy Friday! #moedchat
A6: Contine to allow students that "voice and choice", allowing myself to listen to the Ss, and allowing them that chance to express themselves in my classroom. #moedchat
A6. #MOedchat I’ll provide a little more time in my classes to give students time to share what’s on their mind - be it school, the country, texts covered in class, or their lives in general. To teach effectively, we need to know our students and make those connections. #CavsPLN
