#Satchat is a weekly Twitter conversation for current and emerging school leaders that takes place every Saturday morning at 7:30 EST. Co-founders and co-moderators are Brad Currie, Scott Rocco, and Billy Krakower. #Satchat's mission is to expand educator's Personal Learning Network (PLNs) that in turn will promote the success of all students.
Good morning #satchat Hope everyone is settling into a new school year! Jackie from CT, US: library media and advocate for @fdesignschool#DesignThinking
Morning #satchat. John Meehan from Washington DC. High school instructional coach and eleventh grade English teacher. Looking forward to learning with you this morning!
Hi #satchat Peter from England. Software publisher. Just in from blackberry picking (for home made wine).
We do a lot in #STEM and #STEAM, so very interested in today's #satchat
A1: When I hear about STEM, STEAM, STREAM, I think the acronym keeps changing for the same beautiful concert! But I also wonder where the humanities are... #satchat
A1 I think of opportunities for Ss to be creative and explore for themselves. I also think of the integration of different content areas in a cohesive way. #SatChat@wkrakower
A1: I think about how we often times try to layer on instead of integrate. Breaking down silos means being willing to connect curriculum across the board...especially in these areas. #SATCHAT
A1: I think STEM/STEAM is a mindset of creativity, problem solving, and thinking skills. Needed on so many levels, not just for careers, but for our everyday life. Aspects of STEM/STEAM surround us everyday in the real world. #satchat
A1: When I hear STEAM, STEM, or STREAM I think about the endless opportunities that students have to learn, create, fail, reflect, and collaborate #Satchat
"What do you want to do with the time you have left here?
How do you want to spend those precious, fleeting, irretrievable-once-they're-gone seconds?"
#SaturdayMorning#SatChathttps://t.co/GpNcgkMfsB
A1 I think of integrating science, tech, engineering, math, arts, and reading to create realistic situations for Ss like they will encounter after school. Life and careers don’t operate in silos of just reading or science or math and Ss’ learning shouldn’t either! #satchat
A1: I think it’s a way to get students and teachers excited about academic areas that sometimes they can find hard, boring, and uninterested in! #SATCHAT
As a longtime teacher and veteran principal, I think of what I've always known is best for kids - deep and meaningful learning is interdisciplinary, integrated, social, and hands-on. #satchat
A1: When I hear about STEM, STEAM, STREAM, I think the acronym keeps changing for the same beautiful concert! But I also wonder where the humanities are... #satchat
#satchat BREAKING NEWS: Web tightens around Obama, as Bruce Ohr names at least 6 Obama officials involved in the plot to frame Trump. Nelly Ohr now must testify. https://t.co/09jWhMj04q
A1: I think “problem solving.” Conquering evolving challenges, both big and small that translate and extend to the real world beyond classroom walls. #satchat
A1: changing education to create relevant learning opportunities for students. Learning focusing on creativity and hands-on activities. Stepping away from Industrial Age based education by using inquiry and design #satchat
A1; STEM/STEAM encourages creativity and connections across content areas. I think about collaboration, problem solving, application of skills in an authentic way. #satchat
A1: I think of how amazing it would be to have had this #mindset in education when I was young! #STEAM#satchat Making learning engaging and fun, tying in real world problems to learn how to become solution makers.
A1: I’ll confess, STEAM and STREAM grate on my ears. I feel like it’s too cutesy. The concepts are great, but I feel like we can’t handle STWEAM.
Creativity and Writing skills are crucial though. Especially for STEM #satchat
A1 if ed. of the past was about facts. Ed. of today is about connections. The root of these acronyms are thinking. Logical, active, creative & emotional. I try & focus on the space between these disciplines & making connections between child, school and life. #satchat
A1: When I think of STEAM, I think of hands-on inquiry learning that appeals to the kids’ desire to explore and learn about the world around them. #SATCHAT
A1: When I hear STEAM, STEM, or STREAM I think about the endless opportunities that students have to learn, create, fail, reflect, and collaborate #Satchat
Agreed, my issue with the name-game is that people focus too much on the individual subjects that are part of the acronym and not about how ALL disciplines can be represented as part of learning. #satchat
@bfarrauto And we know that the 4 Cs are so critical for preparing future-ready students. Check out this data from the World Economic Forum on skills 2020 graduates need. #satchat CREATIVITY is #2
A1: STEAM should mean collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, communication, etc. Sadly, many schools have turned it into the next “boxed curriculum” and the heart of the movement is losing its “steam” (see what I did there?) #satchat
A1: STEM/STEAM is about preparing students for the jobs that they will have that don't even exist today. This helps build creative, collaborative problem solvers. #satchat
A1: I think of students who are fully engaged in learning, empowered by choice and voice, and developing critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills. #satchat
A1. When I think of STE(A)M I think of cross-curricular learning. Projects and engagement! Part science, part tech, part engineering, part arts, and part mathematics. #satchat
A1: STEM, STEAM, STREAM are frameworks for emphasizing connections between subjects & the real world. Highlights problem-solving, future, purpose. #satchat
Yes @Ryan_Fisk Problem Solving Teaching is #12 of 195 influences from Hattie's Visible Learning Research! .63 effect size and the #1 needed skill of graduates! #satchat
...and ideally student-generated choice, where my role is to help facilitate curricular connections to activities and projects the student choses and cares about. It's all about building excitement & engagement. #PBL#SatChat
A2: It's important to teach STEAM b/c not all Ss learn the same way and STEAM is one way to differentiate for Ss while preparing them to solve the problems of the future #SatChat
Full agree - and it’s interesting that folx assume that doesn’t happen in STEM. It feels like the additions say something about folx view of STEM. This is something that I just realized. Thank you #satchat
Yes! When I do #STEAM lessons with the kids there is so much embedded reading, writing, and speaking involved. The humanities are a HUGE part of all of it. #satchat
Engagement is a key term. Too many times students are not engaged in learning opportunities partially due to the delivery or subject. Using STEM methods (whatever the subject area) can change the engagement level #satchat
A2: incorporating STEAM doesn’t change much pedagogically since John Dewey’s turn of the century ideas, it’s just that the tech is new and we forgot what good teaching looked like for a while #satchat
So interesting - the word "decompartmentalize". Because it really is about providing students with opportunities to "connect the dots" on their own. A real shift in thinking. #satchat
A2: Students who participate in the planning and implementation of their learning, can learn anywhere, anytime and adapt to an evolving world! #satchat
A2: This graphic says it all. We need to provide learning opportunities for Ss that allow them to learn in ways that will benefit them in the future. Let’s face it, we aren’t traditional learner so we shouldn’t force our Ss to be! #satchat
A1: seeing a bit of the left ‘confused’ mindsets about stem steam and stream these days. Some Admins singling out 1 letter of the acronym and focusing on that in school or school’s mission. 😩 #Satchat
This is so critical! Being in the land of the Walmart home office, many are saying the kiddos are graduating lacking the problem solving skills. I’m determined to changed this, even if just a little! #satchat
A2: We do not use skills in isolation in the real world. Problem solving involves using all of our skills together creatively. We should be teaching our students in a cross-curricular fashion because that is how we want them to think. #SatChat
A1: When I think of #STEM, I think of the best way to empower students to change the world while developing skills that they will utilize throughout their lifetime. #satchat
Really like your thoughts about reaching across the content areas, Kheila...even cross-curricular integration...more seamless type of learning and exploration. #satchat
A2: incorporating STEAM doesn’t change much pedagogically since John Dewey’s turn of the century ideas, it’s just that the tech is new and we forgot what good teaching looked like for a while #satchat
A2: Opportunity. STEM/STEAM careers are expected to grow at a high percentage over the next 10 years. We want our Ss to be as well prepared as possible. Many of the top careers are rooted in STEAM education. Also, isn’t it just plain fun! Lessons are so engaging for Ss. #satchat
A2) The source of knowledge has moved from the front of the classroom into the students' hands. Many need to physically be a part of the learning process. #SatChat
A2: Because "traditional" teaching was developed 100 years ago for kids 100 years ago, to get content that we now have at our fingertips. For better or worse, the students of today are very different than those students. They need engagement, integration and purpose. #satchat
A2 Heard a lady talking on the radio about the Neil Armstrong film, and when man will return to the moon (about 20 years time). She stressed this was dependant on our kids coming out of school with good #STEM/#STEAM/STREAM skills #satchat
A2 Life is multifaceted with new daily challenges. If we are not preparing students to be able to find solutions for what life throws at them, we are failing them in how we teach. #satchat
“Facilitate curricular connections to activities and projects....” BOOM!
Love how it doesn’t say “Lecture the curriculum and then give a scantron test..” #satchat
A2: You could easily title the second column student-centered learning and relate this shift to all content areas, couldn't you? #satchat It is critical that we shift from adult-centered organizations to those that are designed to create future ready learners! Time to shift!
A2: It’s important to teach STEAM, STEM, or STREAM because students deserve to gain exposure to these types of learning experiences that they will undoubtedly encounter as a possible career choice down the road #Satchat
A1: recently heard of a school in NJ focused on STEAM but all Ts are expected to focus on “the arts” in curriculum, classes, assessments, culture etc. More dedicated, practical and meaningful how/Why narratives r needed 4edus about stem steam stream #Satchat
A2: Because if students are not making routine, engaging, and exciting connections between the topics we teach and what they care about in their lives, school becomes an irrelevant series of hoop jumping & not the joy and wonder of learning it can be. #SatChat#whatschoolcoulebe
A2: It teaches Ss to be the captain of their own ship. They direct their learning and use real world skills instead of just individual subjects it makes them use all their skills at once. It often requires out of the box thinking. #satchat
A2 - #STEAM learning gives students multiple pathways to learn, teaches skills not just facts, and provides that real-world relevance that they so need. #satchat
A2 STEAM promotes high S engagement, where traditional teaching can sometimes fall short. It also helps in reaching those Ss who learn outside the traditional teaching model. #SatChat@wkrakower@TheBradCurrie
Yes! When I do #STEAM lessons with the kids there is so much embedded reading, writing, and speaking involved. The humanities are a HUGE part of all of it. #satchat
A2a: The visual is too pat--STEAM does not have a monopoly on good practices. Indeed, I was a public school student in the 1960s when school looked more like your STEAM list than the traditional one posed.
#satchat
A2: Honestly, the first 2 descriptors say it all! Student Driven instead of Teacher Driven... We don't have all the answers anymore, we need to guide S's to know how to find them without us. #steam#SatChat
A2: The reality is that our world is not compartmentalized into subjects. Our students need to be able to look at problems through a cross curricular approach. ie Environmental issues - social change is a huge problem that needs to be approached by using STEAM #satchat
A2: It’s important to “teach” steam bc of the affect it has on its teachers as much as its students. You can’t hang on to your old school, ineffective pedagogy and be an effective steam educator. It forces you to let go of bad teaching habits to embrace better ones. #satchat
A2- it's important because while so many things in our society are evolving, education can't continue to tow the traditional line. It does our kids a disservice #SatChat
A2) The source of knowledge has moved from the front of the classroom into the students' hands. Many need to physically be a part of the learning process. #SatChat
1✅ #Satchat Just starting to use @Seesaw at my new school for ART - GR 3,4,5 as a SLC Art portfolio! Had practice at my former school thanks to @jasongraham99
A2. incorporating art into STEM adds design and creativity to problem solving. The opportunity for students to increase their technical skills while using creative ingenuity is limitless #satchat
Engagement is a key term. Too many times students are not engaged in learning opportunities partially due to the delivery or subject. Using STEM methods (whatever the subject area) can change the engagement level #satchat
A2 The STEAM approach allows the Ss to own their learning, & therefore increases retention. The sage on stage, direct instruction model might be efficient 2 plow thru material, but it’s boring #makeitreal & tapping the 5% 👎🏼 #satchat
A2: Ss are able to feel daily success! The open-ended nature of engineering, technology, and art help Ss feel confident in applying math and science concepts to learning, or creates a path for learning those content areas through them. #Satchat
A2: The content that we all know and love is at our students' fingertips now. They need us to design tasks that will help them know how to analyze & apply that content, hence why #STEM is important. They also need the "soft" skills that STEM provides. #Satchat
A2 I don’t believe you can teach steam. As a teacher, I believe we can create the conditions for learning to happen. We can facilitate more complex thinking. We can grow our ss creative capacities. #satchat
Love this chart @MrsJWhiting! Student empowerment in the learning process is key to engagement and accelerated learning. This represents the many ways in which we can hook our students! #satchat
A2: Students who participate in the planning and implementation of their learning, can learn anywhere, anytime and adapt to an evolving world! #satchat
A2 Because it is what we need. The students will solve our current 'unsolvable' problems when we help them acquire the skills. #Satchat#criticalthinking#designthinking
A2. STEAM learning is messy. Iterative. Non-sequential. Traditional school trained people to work highly routine jobs in mines and factories while assigning letter grades for compliance in the same spirit as the USDA assigned grades for meat. The game has changed. #Satchat
A2: same reason it is important to learn how to speak in public and communicate. The Skills and activities utilized are relevant for success at any level. Being able to take notes, memorize and complete tests says nothing about how creative you are #satchat
A2: Ss need relevance to what they are learning. They are curious and want to know WHY this has any importance to their lives. Even when it’s not possible, finding activities that engage and allow them to work on overcoming challenges and problems are so important! #satchat
The integration & wholeness of STEAM allows students to create meaning, discover passions, & build important skills necessary for working with people. Kids can know their learning matters now #satchat
A2: We need to help students learn problem solve for the real world - the world is changing with technology and we need to do what we can to provide our students with the skills they need to be successful in the future #Satchat
A2b: I've become suspicious of the STEM/STEAM acronym, not because it's a bad idea (it's not) but because we continue to spend too much time selling it, when we should be focusing on the cognitive studies that use the tools as opposed to the tools themselves. #satchat
A2: It’s important to “teach” steam bc of the affect it has on its teachers as much as its students. You can’t hang on to your old school, ineffective pedagogy and be an effective steam educator. It forces you to let go of bad teaching habits to embrace better ones. #satchat
A2b) And I think part of this is truly authentic learning. IE: This year, my 8th grade Ss will design websites for local businesses. THEN at the end, the Ss will teach the owner how to maintain the site moving forward... tapping the highest retention of reteaching others #satchat
A2 I don’t believe you can teach steam. As a teacher, I believe we can create the conditions for learning to happen. We can facilitate more complex thinking. We can grow our ss creative capacities. #satchat
A3: STEAM in a K-12 context needs to be able to take place in any classroom or context. STEAM labs are great for graduation level work but foundations should be laid everywhere. #satchat
I think that’s a trap we have to be wary of falling into. It’s not enough just to say ‘hey, I’m mixing these subjects together so now I’m teaching #STEAM!’, we have to change how we teach #satchat
A2: Students need to be involved in their own learning to fall in love with learning. While traditional teaching methods teach students, STEAM allows them to grab learning by the reigns and control which direction to take their desire to learn takes them. #satchat
I don’t think steam should be an hour, a project, etc. it should be a lens to see learning though, to make sure all ss needs are met, passions are infused, strengths utilized and thinking stretched. #satchat
A2 It’s important bc it teaches Ss soft skills that they need to be 21st century citizens but also empowers them as learners to be in charge of their learning, helping them to be creative problem-solvers, figuring out answers their way! #satchat
Modeling, doing, creating a learning community which mirrors what is done when a group of people come together to solve a problem, create a solution. #satchat
Some chose great companies... Some makes the company great.
And you've proved it. Your passion and humble nature inspires us all..
#HappyWorkAnniversary Farheen Khan!!! We just can't imagine our happy workplace without you.
#SoftGetix#WeCelerateYourDay#Satchat#timeflies
A3: We have a dedicated space for teachers and students. This is where they do their #geniushour work, STEAM work, and other “messy” exploratory learning. Now if I could just get a full time staff member to go with it... #SATCHAT
A3 We’re using our libraries, classrooms, and other available existing spaces in our buildings. A dedicated space would be great but we make it work! #SatChat
A2 It’s important bc it teaches Ss soft skills that they need to be 21st century citizens but also empowers them as learners to be in charge of their learning, helping them to be creative problem-solvers, figuring out answers their way! #satchat
A3: While I love the Maker labs and STEAM spaces, I always wonder why do we need a special space at all? Can't this learning thrive in any space where the T and Ss have the mindset and opportunities? #SatChat
A3: In the @ChesterNJSchool all students take a cycled #STEM course grades K-8. Love supporting and visiting these classes to see how students respond when encountering failures/successes during the collaboration process #Satchat
A3 A space for Ss voice and choice, in which everyone is learning to have an innovator's mindset. And also a time to think and pause without drowning in mindless lectures. #Satchat
A3: STEAM can be done anywhere but for a question about learning space, I’ll recommend reading “The Space: A Guide for Educators” by Rebecca Louise Hare https://t.co/FrQLYY6rDl#satchat
A3: At my school, the science teachers and the English teachers have teamed to create cross-curricular opportunities for our students. Our "space" utilizes our respective classrooms and the physical space outside the four walls of our classroom. #SatChat
A3: Space is tough for most schools. We share the Media Center on most days. Media specialists have been so accommodating. I’m also looking to incorporate STEAM into the classrooms when the Ss aren’t with me. The STEAM mindset should permeate the entire school. #satchat
A3: Right now I don't have a whole lot - I would love to create a makerspace where my Social Science Ss can create / innovate prototypes that will help solve problems. I would love to one day to be in a team teaching STEAM classroom with a math / science T. #satchat
And compartmentalization Does Not journey into transference for students. We must get Ss Out of the box, stretching, extending, reaching, grabbing, failing, trying again, innovating and onward. #satchat
A2: The reality is that our world is not compartmentalized into subjects. Our students need to be able to look at problems through a cross curricular approach. ie Environmental issues - social change is a huge problem that needs to be approached by using STEAM #satchat
A3 - There are so many different kinds of #STEAM spaces, but don’t forget it is so much more than just a SPACE. STEAM can be done anywhere given the opportunity and mindset! #satchat
I agree - in 1970 I was in an open area classroom with 5th - 7th grades & very free choice learning. But since then, sadly, I've seen ed becoming more traditional, not less so. #satchat
A3: Shouldn’t the whole school be a steam space? If you isolate steam to a corner of your room then you are just making it another subject in the row of silos. Math. Science. Art. Steam. Etc. #satchat
NOW available "Getting Started with STEAM: Practical Strategies for the K-8 Classroom" save 20% off with discount code FLR40 on https://t.co/cAOP7kCVx5#Satchat#GSwSTEAM
A2: Learning in silios can't exist. Ss need to apply skills, make connections, find problems, solve problems. Our Ss need to be empowered to think beyond individual subjects. #satchat
A3: While I love the Maker labs and STEAM spaces, I always wonder why do we need a special space at all? Can't this learning thrive in any space where the T and Ss have the mindset and opportunities? #SatChat
A3: I work with schools across the U.S. and I find this to be a real challenge. And, if there is no space many folks believe it can't be done. False. STEM is more about the learning design than the space. Incorporating thinking and doing as part of a regular room. #satchat
A3: STEAM is a mindset first and a space 2nd. Important for those w/o dedicated space to be portable with materials and pedagogy to grow the habits of mind! #satchat
A3: Our Kinder learning space is set up to offer a very free flow of learning under the STEAM umbrella...provocations, questions, variety of materials (natural and people-made), tech resources that support research, seating spaces that invite collaboration, art studio. #satchat
I prefer the term "invested" over buy-in because those who buy-in can later become sellers. When students see themselves in the learning, maximum results become common place. #satchat
A3: Our district has makerspaces and makerspace materials (either lab style or in our libraries). We are learning and growing everyday to try and better empower our Ss. #Satchat
Full disclosure-as a homeschooling mom, the world was the classroom. And then there was the day we taped out the size of a komodo dragon on the kitchen floor. #satchat
A3: While I love the Maker labs and STEAM spaces, I always wonder why do we need a special space at all? Can't this learning thrive in any space where the T and Ss have the mindset and opportunities? #SatChat
This is a great program. I’ve just started playing with @Seesaw as a way for my students to have a digital portfolio as we journey through self-assessment this year! 😬 #satchat
In reply to
@specialtechie, @jillallyncarter, @Seesaw, @jasongraham99, @Seesaw
A3 the way 'in' with STEAM is integration into whats happening already in the class. Curriculum Coordinators/School Leaders need to work with Tech Coaches & teachers to make it happen. Get the community excited about it. Develop the culture #satchat
A2c: But maybe that's because we were more free range as children, building forts, rebuilding bicycles, making go carts, ramps for sleds, etc.
https://t.co/Wva0H9A9my#Satchat
A3- My #STEM space is physically relaxing, w/ whiteboard tables & kinesthetic seating... but more importantly, my pedagogy supports the “Figure it our skills” @alicekeeler and fosters new opportunities for my Ss @DonWettrick#satchat
While I'm no expert on the "subject", isn't it more of a shift in thinking and our approach to how we "do school"? Who's doing most of the talking? Where are the students and teacher positioned in the room? Who's connecting the dots? And "Why do we need to learn this?" #Satchat
In reply to
@3_DLeadership, @geekyteach, @JuliB224
A1 I'm uncomfortable with the idea that adding "art" to "stem" makes it more creative. This reinforces the idea that creativity has to do with being artistic, when actually all problem solving & design is creative. #SatChat
A3: We are trying to find space and it’s always an issue but finding time to help people transition is the more important component on our end. #Satchat
A3 I think first we create space within ourselves to approach teaching/learning as a more process centered experience. If we do this, that is 80% of the transformation. #satchat
Something else I’m chewing on here: talking creativity as most school boards and government councils are pushing less creativity because of standardization #satchat
A3- next week I'll have an entire academy designed for this! Not just one classroom, or one media center. To say I'm extremely excited is an understatement #satchat
A3 Lots of different ways to configure space -Ts make STEAM happen anywhere but great space can amplify and make it easier for them to integrate learning opportunities #satchat
A3. Space is irrelevant. I teach in multiple classrooms a day and different classrooms every year. Bring a cell phone and a box of @LEGO_Group and Magic can happen. #satchat
A3: Shouldn’t the whole school be a steam space? If you isolate steam to a corner of your room then you are just making it another subject in the row of silos. Math. Science. Art. Steam. Etc. #satchat
I see that. But that wasn’t the intention of STEM, and I think that’s what is confusing. It started with adding the A (arts) but morphed into something else #satchat
A3: I dedicated a space in my classroom last year. This year I've moved it into the hallway to invite the rest of my team to utilize. Always a work in progress. #Satchat
My word choice was probably too harsh, but space will just be a small part of the planning. If you have an amazing activity, admin should find the space for you. #satchat
A3: Whatever it takes! Go where the learning is most relevant & connected for students - in the classroom, in the hall, outside, in the community. etc. Never let four walls constrain a high powered teaching and learning environment! #SatChat
Q2: I think at the route of STEAM are thinking skills, dispositions, and a chance for SEL integration. Combined together, we have making. STEAM, done purposefully, gives opportunities for Ss to translate ideas into action. #SatChat
A2d: My big fearnis that STEAM will be seen as something more than it is--it's a poor replacement (but perhaps a necessary one given the way we rein in our children today) for letting kids muck around in their own with real tools, lumber, stolen wheels, and lots of time.
#satchat
A3: I dedicated a space in my classroom last year. This year I've moved it into the hallway to invite the rest of my team to utilize. Always a work in progress. #Satchat
A1 I'm uncomfortable with the idea that adding "art" to "stem" makes it more creative. This reinforces the idea that creativity has to do with being artistic, when actually all problem solving & design is creative. #SatChat
Yes! If we promote the right skills - collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity, and character - that would be the whole kit and kaboodle! :) #satchat
While I'm no expert on the "subject", isn't it more of a shift in thinking and our approach to how we "do school"? Who's doing most of the talking? Where are the students and teacher positioned in the room? Who's connecting the dots? And "Why do we need to learn this?" #Satchat
In reply to
@3_DLeadership, @geekyteach, @JuliB224
A3: I don’t think you have to have a specified space to create a classroom of STEAM learning. If products are needed, resources are a must, my best resource has always been my students parents! They are always looking for ways to help and contribute! #satchat
Definitely a problem because people aren't comfortable with change; they don't understand the difference between equity and equality. Education needs equity. #satchat
Something else I’m chewing on here: talking creativity as most school boards and government councils are pushing less creativity because of standardization #satchat
A3: I see all kinds of creative spaces from bookshelves full of things to make, to entire rooms dedicated to making, all with the intent of facilitating creativity! 👍 #satchat
A2: and working 2disrupt those 100 year old education systems that WERE NOT designed for ‘all kids’ 100 yrs ago or now, content, teaching & learning MUST provide collaborative &problem solving efforts 4children in every facet of the human condition #satchat
A2: Because "traditional" teaching was developed 100 years ago for kids 100 years ago, to get content that we now have at our fingertips. For better or worse, the students of today are very different than those students. They need engagement, integration and purpose. #satchat
My favorite part of T's using Twitter is picture sharing! I love seeing everyone's spaces. It's like Pinterest with a purpose! #satchat Keep sharing please! #sharingiscaring
A4 - I am lucky to work in an inquiry driven, PBL school where we incorporate so many aspects of #STEAM every day across our curriculum. It’s also helpful having admin who support this type of learning and recognize how messy it can be! #satchat
A3 I think first we create space within ourselves to approach teaching/learning as a more process centered experience. If we do this, that is 80% of the transformation. #satchat
Exactly!
Would you let your child build one today?
Does a child's family even have the right tools lying around somewhere to build it?
Where does one "borrow" scrap lumber these days?
#satchat
Absolutely agree with these statements, @MsJWhiting ! If we don’t possess a STEAM mindset, the space in which learning occurs can be meaningless ‘window-dressing’! #satchat
A3: STEAM is a mindset first and a space 2nd. Important for those w/o dedicated space to be portable with materials and pedagogy to grow the habits of mind! #satchat
A3: @gowjhswildcats we are fortunate enough to have a Makers Space created by @MrsCbeach and supported by our admin and district! It really elevated the level in which we can implement STEAM! #satchat
Join us in #Newark for next @EdCampNEWARK SATURDAY 9/22 BEST collaborative teacher led workshops in town + we’ll need some you #PLN day of to provide sessions on all 3 Stem Steam & Stream! Still time to register https://t.co/nQj6cWrqvl Pls #RT#Satchat
A3 librarians such as @mtechman@ethorsenahs@imcraddock@EdCoach4Change set up maker spaces that support #steam and encourage informal learning opps for kids to pursue their interests - from sewing machines to laser cutters to soldering irons and more #satchat
I want my child to build one (and other things)! We have and share all the tools. We collect old pallets and other such scrap in a shed for just such projects! #satchat
My favorite part of T's using Twitter is picture sharing! I love seeing everyone's spaces. It's like Pinterest with a purpose! #satchat Keep sharing please! #sharingiscaring
A3: We can transform spaces but ultimately it is the mindset, the experiences in the spaces. If we support teachers and provide opportunities for them to dig deeper into the idea of STEM/STEAM, we will see traditional learning spaces shifting. #Satchat
It has made a difference for us to have a space. After years in a traditional model, a colorful engaging space shows students that learning can be different—bold, exciting, and fun! #satchat
A3: While I love the Maker labs and STEAM spaces, I always wonder why do we need a special space at all? Can't this learning thrive in any space where the T and Ss have the mindset and opportunities? #SatChat
Q3: My district has a space for 6th grade called Innovation Lab, and it’s where Science, tech, engineering, art & math meet. I participate as often as I can to emphasize that I don’t have to (or want to) stay in my art room. I am ready to help Ss make connections. #SatChat
Making needs to be encouraged and modeled-Ts who get into the thick of making with Ss foster tinkering, play, art and creating as part of daily learning! #satchat
Our thoughts are to have the maker space and a cart to be loaned in addition to classroom resources. We are also thinking about developing a central resource bank for STEM, STEAM and STREAM ideas to inspire each other #satchat#swscampx

A4. “Hey gang. You’ve got 30 minutes to work with your teammates to build as many scenes from the novel we’re reading using only @LEGO_Group and @Twitter for your annotations.” #BrickBattle
Boom.
Instant STEAM. #satchat
I agree - I'm very pro incorporating the arts, but I just don't agree with the reasoning that this "adds a creative element" Engineering, math & science can be increadibly creative. #SatChat
A3: Our media center has some new seating and collaborative spaces, but this is going to be one of the conversations in our Tech team this year. We are a STEAM school, but that means more than just creating units of instruction. We have to go deeper! #STEAM#satchat
Ironically, it's the kids with less, kids coming from families that could not rely on (or afford) outside help to fix, to clean, to manage their lives that were often the best problem solvers.
Ed should not be about the tech, it should be about how we solve problems.
#satchat
I’m trying to be Really still Ryan, while listening and observing how this is going wrong in schools. We have to work to combat the confused efforts. Have to. #satchat
If every tweet you post in a chat is self promoting with ur website, ur book, etc... you’ve missed the point of collaborating. I’ll unfollow you everytime. #satchat#ditchbook#TeachSC
WooHoo! And, doing what you can with what you have is modeling the best habits of mind for students: innovative thinking and problem solving! It is creating within the constraints that makes us flourish! #designthinking@fdesignschool#satchat
A4. “Hey gang. You’ve got 30 minutes to work with your teammates to build as many scenes from the novel we’re reading using only @LEGO_Group and @Twitter for your annotations.” #BrickBattle
Boom.

I’ve always thought that engineering, math, and science were full of art! From amazing buildings, to the Fibonacci sequence, to macros of cells, these subjects are full of beauty. #satchat
A4: I'm so lucky to work in a district being led by amazing, forward thinking educators like @DrJacieMaslyk where risk taking is encouraged. Incorporating #STEAM and #Makered is becoming common practice. #Satchat
A4. For real, though! Search the hashtag #BrickBattle to check out dozens of examples of my amazing students turning traditional literature into tangible STEAM creations. So powerful! #satchat

Much can happen in classrooms that have access to tools - from paintbrushes to pattern blocks to hammers - some specialized tools such as soldering irons, conductive thread and copper tape often need to be in a space accessible to the school #satchat
A3: While I love the Maker labs and STEAM spaces, I always wonder why do we need a special space at all? Can't this learning thrive in any space where the T and Ss have the mindset and opportunities? #SatChat
Q2: I think at the route of STEAM are thinking skills, dispositions, and a chance for SEL integration. Combined together, we have making. STEAM, done purposefully, gives opportunities for Ss to translate ideas into action. #SatChat
Definitely. But as our Ts discuss possibilities, there are as many different ideas as there are Ts. It's hard to come to a concensus & at the same time design something "doable" (we unfortunately have to jump through govt hoops) #SatChat

I have to jump off and be Mom as my 10-year old just came downstairs looking for breakfast. :) Have a great long weekend #satchat and thanks for the great ideas and collaboration!
A5: Start simple with parents and board members, those who work closely with the schools. Bring in local businesses. Let the collaboration happen organically. #satchat
A3: Selected #edtech tools, some that are built in hardware and software owned by schools can help students thrive These 5 tips will give students with disabilities a boost in #STEM: https://t.co/wJ2XtchFYm via @EdTech_K12#satchat
Yes, Meredith, but THAT is exactly what’s happening. Schools are already trapped I think because the education and teaching of the frameworks (how to implement and why) aren’t filtering thru our pipelines/PLNs! 😩 #satchat
I think that’s a trap we have to be wary of falling into. It’s not enough just to say ‘hey, I’m mixing these subjects together so now I’m teaching #STEAM!’, we have to change how we teach #satchat
I think there are critical differences between building a ramp and Fortnite, essential differences that matter.
Which do you think is better for a child? No cop out here, they're both valuable--which do you believe is more valuable?
#satchat
In the documentary The Pact, a Seton Hall recruiter says as much. Kids who come from tough environments have to work it out. #satchat@threedoctors@ThePact2
Ironically, it's the kids with less, kids coming from families that could not rely on (or afford) outside help to fix, to clean, to manage their lives that were often the best problem solvers.
Ed should not be about the tech, it should be about how we solve problems.
#satchat
A4 What I see in classrooms are those STEAM inspired characteristics in the learning opportunities Ss are getting. Ts are integrating the ideas of S creativity, exploration, independence and collaboration more in all areas. #SatChat@wkrakower@TheBradCurrie
A5: We are just starting out with our STEAM space this year so we are looking to communicate and share the awesome learning that will be taking place with the community #SatChat
A5: build community relationships by partnering with your local library, recruiting parent volunteers to your school library, inviting community organizations and businesses to share problems that the students can try to solve #satchat
A5: Focus on a purpose or goal like making our MS a better place or right now we're doing a #yarn4hope project for suicide prevention month in Sept that touches everyone in the community. #satchat
While I'm no expert on the "subject", isn't it more of a shift in thinking and our approach to how we "do school"? Who's doing most of the talking? Where are the students and teacher positioned in the room? Who's connecting the dots? And "Why do we need to learn this?" #Satchat

I’ve seen elem kids hauling tools and supplies 4 making in little red wagons to their classrooms, 5 gallon buckets full of tools that are transportable, Maker tubs in libraries for check out, and shelves full of supplies in a class creative station that are accessible - #satchat
A5 - we encourage collaboration with community members, from having outside experts come in to having our students create walking podcast tours of the city, to running community-led mini courses once a week for students #satchat
A5: Showcase student work. Use Twitter, or a class webpage. Let parents know what’s happening and follow up. Involve older Ss as mentors. Lots of outside organizations are willing to help out too. In NJ, Rutgers 4-H has resources available. https://t.co/4vfoZ2xYV9#satchat
A5: A great way to get your community involved in STEM, STEAM, or STREAM is to have them donate supplies and time. A simple tweet, email, or conversation asking for assistance will generate so many contributions and possibilities #satchat
They are and creativity is also found in things that are not artistic at all. Problem solving takes out of the box, creative thinking. Ex: creating schools that reflect our thinking. #satchat
A5: In our community, there is digital initiative which collects computers, rehabs and cleans them, and gets them to students who need them. https://t.co/2GUx9zQ9PJ#satchat
This tweet has me lamenting the critical loss of libraries in our own schools. I’m wondering if not having school librarians has brought us to this discussion. Just something I’m reflecting on #satchat
A5: Reach out to parents and companies in the area and ask them to participate in activities. Often, people are very happy to come and work with the students. #SatChat
A5: Have your school become a member of your local Chamber, invite local members of the business community to participate in #PBL exhibition nights, create a Business Advisory Council with your school,...whatever it takes to blur the lines between the school & community. #SatChat
Good #SaturdayMorning my friends and have a nice day😜

A5: Beginning the year with a new community board in the LMC entrance to share on-going projects, I’m an expert in or looking for an expert, donations requests & more for all Ss,Ts, and Ps to use. #satchat
A5: Love collaboration between schools and local businesses. Ken Robinson makes the argument for a true school community to bring education to where it needs to be. Taking a village and break down the walls! #SatChat

A5: Get the community involved by seeking thier input, ideas, donations of “stuff” and “things” that Ss can repurpose in thier learning, share pics on social media, invite them to a maker night! #satchat
This tweet has me lamenting the critical loss of libraries in our own schools. I’m wondering if not having school librarians has brought us to this discussion. Just something I’m reflecting on #satchat
Both involve working with others. Personally, I played video games in 90s but not to the extent that some kids play now. I also enjoyed skateboarding and trying to build ramps. Both are beneficial and enjoying I guess #Satchat
A2: #Satchat
In occupational therapy, STEAM principles are most explicitly addressed during our two levels of fieldwork & lab activities. Level 1 FW takes place while students are still in school & is directly related to specific courses. Level 2 is akin to student teaching
Preach Kelli! Heading into year 24 (in USA) and about 4 years total international teaching service and ohhhh the google docs we can start about names of concepts, initiatives etc that are the same and called something different! 😩 #satchat
I've often said, if you hang around in education long enough, everything will come back around again. I've reached 19 years (not sure how THAT happened) and I'm seeing it firsthand. I don't think it's always a bad thing.

A5: The best way to get the community involved, is to get students excited about a topic in the classroom and have them bring it home. When a child is excited about what they are learning their parents will be excited, bringing the community together #satchat
Q4: This year I am going to focus on promoting the #STEAM relationship between art & tech. I want Ss to see that art doesn’t just stop at Pencil and paper. #satchat
Some #acps schools have sponsored design or Maker nights w/ parents to engage them with kids / brings some back as volunteers + helps them understand buzz of kids about making #satchat@PassmanACPS@KarenHeathcock@bReadus91 all get parents engaged w maker learning by design.

A5: Ask them. We can’t complain that they don’t support us when we never ask if they will...and they will if they see it’s mutually beneficial. #Satchat
I see this too. In our school we teach art, but we also incorporate it into all our classes. I truly believe Art, music, dance should be melded into our teaching as much as possible. #SatChat
Yeah. As I reflect more, the school librarian collated these various topics and synthesized them for Ts and Ss. They could recommend cross-discipline to push Ts and Ss. That’s gone. #satchat
A5 In the past we’vehisted STEAM family nights and shared out the district newsletters and @Seesaw. This year at #ISTE I got the idea of sharing those STEM-related things our Ss are doing in small businesses in our community thru QR codes. #satchat
A5. Getting the school community involved with our hands-on teacher training week: https://t.co/vGmdF9BgP6#satchat
Getting the broader community involved thanks to an awesome working partnership with @DJOMinistry@ColleenSwaim@DJOLibrary for a massive 🤞🤫 end of year event.
A5 Share the awesome things the Ss are doing with the community. Shameless promotion of our Ss awesome work and their learning! That could spark community interest and a want to participate or lend a hand! #SatChat
A5: I like the idea of asking parents and the community for things that are leftover. Toilet paper tubes, egg cartsons etc, because the question always comes next: "What are you doing with those?" #satchat
A5: Open your doors to families and local businesses. Collaborate with other educators in the area. Grow and extend that feeling of community. #Satchat
"Coming back around again" in a new context with radically changed learners and global needs is iterative when done well and reactionary when done poorly. #satchat
Jumping in---rather than looking at more valuable, maybe ponder how they connect? What if kids turn to video games because they feel the need to go on adventures, problem solve, conquer challenges, and build worlds and they don't get to do that as much at school or life? #satchat
A4: Model and encourage students to lead STEAM learning...offer provocations/questions to inspire creative and innovative thinking/STEAM responses. #satchat
A4 focus on big ideas, questions, life centered issues and then pursue that learning through the various disciplines. Let ideas drive the learning, not content. Infuse the content alongside. #satchat
A4: STEAM is a daily practice in my classroom. Ss are engaged in learning. We do coding, building, hands on modeling with @PlayDoh and I always seek for ways to help our student's get what they need to succeed through donors, grants, etc. #Satchat
A5: parents/community members donate items to help with projects... I would like to get more community members in my classroom and I have started a class Instagram page to post things (just need to wait on media forms before I post pics of Ss #Satchat
This is one space in a school where Ts said we want to have rich experiential learning for all our kids - not just intervention focus Thnx @GeckosJE for sharing #satchat
A5: Have conversations with the community. Invite them in. Discuss skill sets they are looking for. When we partner with local businesses we are able to provide more authentic experiences that benefit everyone! #satchat

A2: As an educator, I want to use the best instructional methodology to maximize learning. OT students are often less interested in our mental health curriculum. I have to find the best/most creative ways to engage students curiosity before trying to teach them anything #satchat
A2: #Satchat

Which is more valuable?
(Yes, they're both valuable.)
Which child better served? Free range fort-building child of the 60s? Fortnite child of the 10s?
(STEAM does both.)
#satchat
Q6: STEAM and Technology what are some technology items you use?
Or
What type of supplies do you use for STEAM? These can be none technology items or technology items? #Satchat
A4: Two of my favorites (one not to real world relevant, but they love it!) Finding surface area and volume to put the tin man back together and the other is using scale to create their perfect dream bedroom! #SATCHAT
Now that people can follow hashtags, it can be an amazing resource! I did a separate Instagram account too. You guys do a great job BTW! #SatChat I want to involve our community more, they want to be involved!
A5: Getting the community involved in STEAM...showcase the learning through digital portfolios that can be accessed by parents, invite parents in to experience the learning process, invite community ‘experts’ in to inspire STEAM learning. #satchat
A6: This may sound strange but over the last 4 years we have actually moved toward making the technology in our maker workshop more lean. It's not about the having fanciest technology and a lot of gadgets; it's about what you do with them. #satchat

...and chicken wire! Sure a 3D printer or laser cutter are cool, but never let a lack of resources be an excuse for not creating a space where students learn by doing - every day. #SatChat
A6: For our new STEAM space, we started with flexible furniture, storage, and a 3D printer, but would recommend any tech that would encourage or facilitate student creation #satchat

Yes! We are going to lose in the end if tech is the answer. Tech is a tool (with potential effectiveness) to teach concepts that don’t require technology #satchat
A6: This may sound strange but over the last 4 years we have actually moved toward making the technology in our maker workshop more lean. It's not about the having fanciest technology and a lot of gadgets; it's about what you do with them. #satchat
This. Is. Awesome.
This school year, every single child at Barnwell Elementary will be celebrated. Will have greatness seen in them. Will feel proud, accepted, and special.
This is how to build culture, folks! #satchat#betheBEAR
Over twenty Pawsitively Awesome students signed the wall, rang the Bear bell, and celebrated with a phone call home this week! We asked students to find their teachers names on the wall because yes we celebrated their awesomeness too! #betheBEAR!
A5: By getting them involved. Really, simple as that--phone call, email, knock on the door. Local commiunity willing to jump in.
(Maybe I'm spoiled by living in Bloomfield.) @07003schools#satchat
This is why many “traditional” math students struggle when they get to geometry, and many students who don’t believe they are good at math shine. #satchat
A6 - I will admit I get super excited about getting cool tech tools for my class (yay! laser!) but I am equally excited when I get a donation of cardboard tubes, legos, or $ store items. Tools (both lo and hi tech) are great, but the real benefit is in how they are used #satchat
#Satchat A2 Education of healthcare professionals must incorporate the interests of the caring community & the ethics of care in a meaningful way to develop practitioners who have these skills and use them
Q6: Our 9th grade students read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and then go to the Biology lab to discuss HeLA cells & view them under a microscope. When we read Night, the students create a butterfly garden and learn about composting, & other environmental lessons. #satchat
A6 We use cardboard and tissue boxes to LittleBits , Makey Makey and MicroBits Its diverse and depends on learner needs We get kids to create in https://t.co/7dOt0HUT7D to 3D print #satchat
Well, again; my experience is school boards and politicians don’t like admitting there is a problem that would require significant changes. I see most problems being acknowledged being solved by rebranding. #satchat
Are you redesigning your math classroom into a workshop model and including the principles of this text? We're looking for teacher partners for our schools & I'd love to connect/learn with you! Please reply if interested! #reimaginingmath#nctm#edchat#learnchat#tlap#satchat
A6: Tech isn’t just computers. It’s another tool in our toolbox. Whatever pushes the needle for Ss. I’ve seen great collaboration among Ss with computer tasks and with spaghetti and marshmallows. Doesn’t make a difference, it’s all about their use. #satchat
Definitely. It's a math class not an art class. I think that the "art" helps solidify understanding for many Ss. Most of our Ss love math & do well in it. I'm not a math T but I watch what my math T do & I find their classes "creative" in many ways #SatChat
Thank you to our amazing #PLN for another great #Satchat!

A6: The beauty of STEAM is that you don't need the latest technology to implement it in your classroom. Let them use the old boxes or legos to create things. The most important thing is that they are using the imagination to create and learn. #satchat
