#ECOOchat is a regular Twitter conversation for computer-using educators that takes place on announced Tuesday evenings at 8:00 pm EST. #ECOOchat is moderated by members of ECOO (Educational Computing Organization of Ontario) in support of facilitating and extending the positive use of education technology by educators and learners alike.
This was my Ss first opportunity at coding so I let them explore Scratch Jr and Hopscotch. Their goal was to create something to share with the class. #ECOOchat
Jen from Guelph, ON working as a 21st Century Technology Coach for K-10 Supporting #hourofcode in our system after trying it with my students 5 years ago #ECOOchat
Do you find that the Ss want to give up when it gets challenging, or do they welcome the challenge? I find they’re so engaged that they willingly accept it. #ECOOchat
They could do a list of words then randomly pick the words from the list. Or match words to definitions. Or display one random letter at a time and guess the word. #ECOOchat
Hello #ECOOchat! Colleen Rose, joining from Red Rock. I didn't participate in #hourofcode this year, but I have in the past. Looking forward to reading through these posts.
Our school just finished a week of #HourOfCode. Looking forward to hearing some suggestions for next steps for K-8 Ss possible @Google CSFirst #ECOOchat
I do. Starting in February, I'll be teaching ICS2O (I think that's the right code?) for the first time -- it'll be a steep learning curve, but fun! #ECOOchat
#ECOOchat I also linked into the Partners in Research webinar on the Wednesday morning. It was somewhat interesting, but Ss lost interest after 20 minutes
That's the right code. You know we will have your back! Also @grant_hutchison is the person I mentioned to you as a guru of excellent resources. #ECOOchat

With @cashjim I recently had a chance to program more than one and have them talk to each other. It was pure magic! We made a mini-slot machine. #ECOOchat

#ECOOchat Micro:bits can be coded using a block language or micropython.. very flexible device. I hope to add it to my HS course later in the year with some $$
A3 We have used Dash (and more recently Cue), navigating a maze in the classroom and then working in teams to navigate the school halls #ECOOchat. We used Dash to send the Attendance folder to the office. https://t.co/eJrByU1lFd
a@: Another lesser known resource that you can use on any device in a browser. A good mixed bag, with incremental growth trajectory

We've been putting some kits together actually. They should be available soon. We're trying to connect to #onted curriculum and selecting what we feel is most worth your while.#ecoochat

A4. Following up using https://t.co/cn7ZEtWUDJ activities. Plus, I’ve got a few Vex robots that the students will build and code to use in math. Our board has many robotic kits, so I’ve ordered #sphero. #ECOOchat
That was so much fun working together on that. Don’t always get tons of time to really play around with all of the wonderful new tools available! #ECOOchat

Exactly. Gives you a few weeks to explore before you commit. And to see if it’s age-friendly for the Ss. Plus, before these big purchases, we need to make sure there’s some longevity with engagement and that Ss can go deep with it. #ECOOchat
But expect speakers, Alligator clips, motion sensor (doesn't everyone need a Santa scanner?;)), jumper wires.... Will likely have intro and advanced (edge connector, u/s sensor, LEDS etc) #fcledu#ECOOchat

Perhaps a Play, Passion and Purpose challenge is in order. First the time to tinker, then connect with the tool of choice, and then continue with a purpose to be shared at a following event, sharing the iterations, debugging & fails along the way #ECOOchat

I have recently applied for a TLLP with a focus on coding. The possibilities are endless. Thanks for the great contacts and innovative ideas for the classroom. #EcooChat

A5. Since my class has explored Scratch Jr and Hopscotch, they are offering their services as Coding Buddies. So far, we’ve taught 3 classes (K, gr3) and have 4 more classes interested! #ECOOchat
A5. I really want to explore how to use coding to support math. I know there are several #onted leaders in this, just have to take the time to figure it all out. #ECOOchat
We need to extend the set of manipulative “tools” that kids become functional with in primary years so that they can guide thinking/learning in subsequent ones … #ECOOchat@pmcash@J_Loetzerich
Thank you, everyone, for participating. What a great evening. Make those connections! The results from this chat will be posted to the ECOO website. https://t.co/M8H9Es434G#ECOOchat

Thanks! There are a lot of great resources out there. The problem is what is the best starting point and what should be the focus after the #HourOfCode#ECCOchat
