CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Good Morning! We use Chromebooks 1-1 in grades 5 -8 and use Google classroomin those grades as well. I use Classrrom for professional development with our teachers. #CatholicEdChat
A1: I’m Erin from mid-MO. Currently work in early childhood but only for one more week. Going to full time with @alicekeeler! So excited! #CatholicEdChat
A1 I'm Barb, a 3rd grade teacher at @smmOmahaSchool We are a Google school and we are stepping up our Googleness with our new principal! #CatholicEdchat
Good morning, #CatholicEdChat! I am in my twelfth year of teaching theology at @BMHSMustangs in Forestville, Maryland (within the Archdiocese of Washington). I am steadily learning how to use Google.
Natalie from OKC, OK. Principal of a small suburban Catholic School. We are a Google school. We have 1:1 Chromebooks for middle school and Chromebooks shared between PK-5 #CatholicEdChat
My name is Emma Bruggeman and I am a sophomore Middle Childhood Education major with concentrations in Math and English studying at Xavier University #CatholicEdChat
A1 Part 2, I love that our new principal @reenkberg is having the teachers use Google Classroom. One assignment is sending in our lesson plans each week this way. So easy for her to see our plans at a glance. #CatholicEdchat
A1 Good Morning from Atchison KS. Our school is a College prep boarding school that’s run by the Benedictines. Love all things Google. EventuallyI would like to be certified. #catholicedchat
A1. David from Sydney, Australia. Education Officer Religious Leadership, Learning and Development- Sydney Catholic Schools. Sydney Catholic Schools is a system of 152 schools, fully Google, with access to the Google Apps for Ed. #CatholicEdChat
Morning, #catholicedchat from rainy @BrebeufJesuit -- ACT testing day, cause nothing says US Education like restricting kids developed learning methods to conform to security requirements for profitability!
A1: Good Morning! I'm Stephanie, I teach 5th & 6th Social Studies in NY and am currently completing my Google Certified Training application. #CatholicEdChat
A1. Good morning from Omaha. K-8 principal. I had to learn Google on the fly at my last school. Now I want SMM to be able to tap Google as a great tool. I have a lot to learn. #CatholicEdChat
A1: 1:1 BYOT school with @GoogleForEdu -- Gsuite makes what we do possible. Just finished talking about digital organization to the freshman #digcit classes - Tasks, keep, calendar, and more. We love us some big-G #catholicedchat
Nice. Many of our teachers use Classroom...as policy we call our LMS (Rediker Portals) as home base since grades, attendence & unique parent access is there. Ts link their Classroom for access. IMHO Classroom has better features for learning #CatholicEdchat
A1 I used to be the GAFE admin in my last school, but that was a few years ago...I feel like there is so much to learn and not having my own classroom makes it challenging for me to always play with all of the G-Suite lineup, especially for Google Clasroom #catholicedchat
A1: We are a 1:1 iPad school that uses Google Apps as our backbone. I'm a certified Google Trainer and our Ts are getting better & better at formative feedback with Google Apps. #CatholicEdChat
@adkopp76 Google is always changing and making it better. Shout out to the GEG Great Plains Google Plus group. They are always sharing what is new! #CatholicEdchat
Good morning #catholicedchat ; I’m a second year principal @SJSHawthorne
Looking to support Google implementation better; big user as a teacher, need better soft skills!
A1 #CatholicEdChat@stpplmc I teach K-4 Ss Tech Lab + K-8 Digital Resource #infolit#digcit#diglit. All Ss have google accounts w/ Google classroom w/out email. K-4 have weekly lessons on HP-minis. 4-5 have grade level chromebook carts to share. 6-8 have 1:1 chromebooks.
our data-Admin was just saying "it is ok that our [cloud-based] LMS went down - heck, most of the teachers only use it for a gradebook anyway. Google Classroom is a real life-saver in that respect -- another convert #catholicedchat
A2 Full discloser...I took the Level 1 certification and just missed passing it by a few points. Taking it over, I did increase my score. #GrowthMindset I will try again. I wish I had a cohort in town to work with! I prepared on my own. #CatholicEdchat
A2 Assuming you mean in EdTech / eLearning...I hold a Graduate Certificate of Education (ICT / Online Learning and Teaching) from the University of Tasmania (Australia) and am an Associate Member of the Australian Computer Society.
#CatholicEdchat
about 25 dollars or less per cert. https://t.co/PAoigIPteW -- if you are a heavy user, it is not bad, but there are sections that are worth reviewing - and you get a lot out of it. have whole lessons using maps i never thought of before certs #catholicedchat
If you are using the tools, you have a great foundation! The test itself was $5 for L1 and took 3 hours. Google has a terrific learning center with self-paced lessons. #catholicedchat
I used Classroom with my teachers so I would hold myself accountable to learning it. Now all 27 teachers are learning it with me. I followed an @alicekeeler lesson to get started. #catholicedchat
#catholicedchat in high school my teachers used Google Classroom (after using sharepoint and having many problems with it). While being at college, I have only used Canvas.
we had a whole discussion among the academic chairs about potentially going more robust and more money -- that was the conclusion they came to as well. Google serves the students and teachers needs and i think has a better parent system #catholicedchat
Agreed! I read it last spring, and passed it on to our kindergarten team, so we can start with some great projects once we get past testing season. #catholicedchat

for teachers, one & two...i dont think theres a third, but some call Google Innovator the third level (its the really intense one).
Trainer is to help people get teacher certs. Admin is for the tech people and is being revamped and is offline until at least 2019 #catholicedchat
A3: I love Google Classroom, although I haven't used it enough yet this year to really feel like I've adapted to all of the updates. Love how they keep making it better for teachers and students! #catholicedchat
A3. Tough to choose. Now that I’m a principal, I might say Forms because I can use them for feedback. I’m creating one now to get feedback about our Back to School Night. #CatholicEdchat
A3. My fave is Google drive. I store docs and so easy to organize. I was able to google how to change ownership when I left last school so new principal had immediate access. #CatholicEdChat
A3 I do like Slides as well. I like to do everything in Drive for easy access and sharing. Last month I played around with creating a Google site and a personal blog via Blogger. Trying to commit to a blog every Saturday to stretch the writing muscle #catholicedchat
A3 hard to narrow but probably very task specific. GClassroom for clubs/activities/organization/(and class). Keep is my on-the-go lifesaver. Transitioned all teachers from exchange to G-suite this summer, so calendar has been my obsession. #catholicedchat
A3: I like to use Google Docs when my classmates and I have a project to work on. We collaborate without meeting in person. After each of us finish our part of the project, we check our peer's work and inspect our product before we turn it in #catholicedchat
I love how it’s always my fault 😉. Help me find a CS teacher, an extra classroom for overflow, and say you will teach it.... happy to put back on the books. Especially now that we have fancy publication/media classroom! #CatholicEdchat
A3: How to choose?!! I love Drawings and Sheets can do so much! Keep is great, Slides is great... Google 😍 I should earn a commission 😂 #CatholicEdChat
A3 Google docs and forms are what I use the most though I find myself on sheets often any more. Can you give examples on how you use slides? #CatholicEdChat
start with level 1 teacher. it makes sure your foundation skills are on point and gives you some good insight into how teachers could use the classroom tools available. And there is great admin applicability #catholicedchat
A3 As mentioned, I am a Team Drive junkie. For admin stuff and use for Publication News class - 24/7 access anywhere for various news teams. Ss use for story upload, editing, InDesign file sharing & photo library. #catholicedchat
to be fair, i see the system as a 1 semester and more if desired. Wouldnt need Adobe products for most segments since @WeVideo has gotten so good. That is our default for the whole student body. And it G-suite integrate #catholicedchat#stayingontopic

@ChristineMonge, @40ishoracle, @WeVideo
A3.1: I also like how easy it is for students to make very professional looking websites with Google Sites.
My real answer is that I love all Google tools because of how well they all work together!
#catholicedchat
we were digital in the exchange internally, but the ability to share out the master calendar publicly has been awesome. The more teachers choosing classroom means that students have access to a calendar that is not ANOTHER app, which they like #catholicedchat
A3: I like to use Google Docs when my classmates and I have a project to work on. We collaborate without meeting in person. After each of us finish our part of the project, we check our peer's work and inspect our product before we turn it in #catholicedchat
A3 Ability to collaborate across the org by sharing a Google Doc / Spreadsheet / slides, etc is one of the best things in Google. They do collaboration really well. Google sites very useful for classes. They need to update the App for Blogger to run on iPad IOS 11
#CatholicEdChat
A3 I don’t necessarily have a favorite tool. Just trying to find the best uses of all applications for what I am teaching at the moment. #CatholicEdchat
A3: I like to use Google Docs when my classmates and I have a project to work on. We collaborate without meeting in person. After each of us finish our part of the project, we check our peer's work and inspect our product before we turn it in #catholicedchat
A3: Last year, I created a Google site for my Ss so they could access study guides, prayers, and other materials for class. They also used Slides for group projects. This year, Classroom & Docs are my favorites so far! #CatholicEdChat
typical teacher --blame the admin -- this is power-ism not sexism :) -- note that the admin gave the appropriate answer and tasked me with finding the space and the personnel. *sigh* always the geek's job. #catholicedchat
A3.2. I also love, love, love Calendar. I want teachers to add school events to a shared calendar. I have a substitute, computer lab, admin schedule, and of course, birthdays feeding into Google. #CatholicEdChat
As I am watching the chat conversation and realize like @ChristineMonge I am “all things google” I just need to consistently use google and stop using Microsoft office products. Would be much cheaper and I’d always have access. #CatholicEdChat
I feel the same way, @reenkberg! Shared Google Calendars has made it so much easier for scheduling projects in the computer lab and the other shared technology equipment and facilities! #catholicedchat
A3.2. I also love, love, love Calendar. I want teachers to add school events to a shared calendar. I have a substitute, computer lab, admin schedule, and of course, birthdays feeding into Google. #CatholicEdChat
always interesting watching people begin to slide away from another product (*cough* formstack *cough*) as google's products iterate and improve beyond the capability of its rivals. -- but it does make us silo...then @google takes away Google Reader. #stillbitter#catholicedchat
Agree! I made a GClassroom just for the calendar! Great for the various moving pieces for newspaper staff. Also love that user an check various views (or have everything show) for time management (plotting and planning) #catholicedchat
Yes! For collaboration, I also use Google Hangout for when I need to talk face-to-face with other grad students but can’t meet in person. I also use Google Hangout to do author visits with Catholic schools too. #CatholicEdChat
Hate MS. I decided to not use it for a month and never looked back. Our English dept uses it a lot and I’m converting everything to Google. #catholicedchat
our campus ministry team just created live appointment slots for morning prayer and daily examen (end of day). Tools that do the job that needs doing. #catholicedchat
the communications dept. is in the process of uploading tons of photos off dropbox because of the search function in photos. The photo AI has improved so much since cars started driving themselves. #catholicedchat
For example... I created Team Drive for Chairs. Put all Chairs in w/ edit rights. Each weekly agenda is GDoc with live notes during mtg. Add supplemental materials for review. Acts as living record of the year, decisions made, actions yet to happen, and goals. #CatholicEdChat
@reenkberg set up a Team Drive so we can save photos by graduation year so the 8th grade video will be much easier to do. *genius* *note to self-I need to add my photos* #CatholicEdChat
we just had a barrage of sophomores coming to get Excel because they went their whole freshman year without MSOffice. Chemistry tripped them up though :) #catholicedchat
You will love it. Great for students. Teachers can make short videos of concepts and students replay video as many times as needed. So helpful for students. #catholicedchat
Q3 Love then all, but Sites is likely my favorite. I have long had a class website, with links to all my lesson presentations and much more. I don't use text or workbook. My site is all of that and more. I'm in a 1:1 school. My class is 100% digital. #catholicedchat
#catholicedchat I have started Tech Drive Tuesdays for Ts to drop in LMC Tech Lab briefly after school to bring their devices and share #googleEDU tips and tricks in Google Classrooom. Time well spent for newbies to see on-site sample assignments, assessments.
Q5 Has anyone looked at the YouTube Creator Academy? How can we use this in our classroom to promote digital citizenship? Let’s stop blocking YouTube!#catholicedchat
Now that photos are not printed very often anymore, we decided to start using Google as a place for our school digital archives. Our archives are an important part of our school history, and we needed a plan now that many things are digital. #catholicedchat

I am glad to see examples such as those offered by @MrsDoherty and @jdferries about using Google to enliven the faith lives of students in our Catholic schools. There are so many opportunities available. #CatholicEdChat
A3: Last year, I created a Google site for my Ss so they could access study guides, prayers, and other materials for class. They also used Slides for group projects. This year, Classroom & Docs are my favorites so far! #CatholicEdChat

same issue w office365 - honestly thought we were going to go down that road, but Google was too fast, too integrated, & iterates way beyond what the competition can keep up with - G-classroom feature throttles so they dont overwhelm educators :) #catholicedchat
Here's a pic of the Team Drive for Newspaper. We keep records of stories assignments (GSheet), editions, working drafts (GDocs), style guides, the daily agenda is there (GSlides), & anything I use in class ... there is also a GCalendar for deadlines. #catholicedchat
This a a brilliant idea for any yearbook staff! Just have everyone dump their photos in a shared drive for the yearbook staff to access.
#CatholicEdChat

Two Google Sites projects done by our students are for religion class. 7th graders make websites for Mysteries of the Rosary and 8th graders make a website about their Confirmation saint. #catholicedchat

Since we’re talking about Google, I could use some help in getting our GSuite for EDU account set up. Google doesn’t seem to believe that the parish and the school are two separate entities. They won’t let the school have an account. #catholicedchat
A4 One of my fav extensions is Boomerang. It’s kinda free to a certain degree. I use enough anymore that I’ll probably end up subscribing. #CatholicEdChat
Google really is a blank canvas we can use to create the kind of mission and schools we want. I dont like being trapped in silos, but this is a pretty expansive one. The quality of our reflections (jesuit!) improve so much with G-Classroom assignment templating. #catholicedchat
Q5 Has anyone looked at the YouTube Creator Academy? How can we use this in our classroom to promote digital citizenship? Let’s stop blocking YouTube!#catholicedchat
The @BrebeufArrow staff is excited to use our new collaborative publication equipment! We start design and layout for the September edition on Monday. @BrebeufJesuit
A5 In Authentic eLearning pedagogy, creation is the high point in Blooms Digital Taxonomy. If that’s where the higher order thinking is, then it makes sense that they would create their own clips. Student guidance is essential here!
#CatholicEdChat
#catholicedchat I will be checking it out since I make our daily video announcements and post to YouTube already. Someone told me it was "clunky" a few months ago tho.
If you are going to get trapped in a silo, this is the one to be trapped in. Although wouldn’t mind be trapped in The Silos in Waco, TX with Chip and Joanna... #hgtv#catholicedchat

gotta work on the personal projects too. After Ender and I hack Minecraft onto her chromebook, we are going to build lego Voltron! #catholicedchat#bejealous
Bummed I missed the chat! We had a 10am wedding today at the church we serve at as music ministers 😭. Can’t wait to steal google pro tips later from #CatholicEdChat
Here is the link to the playlist for the first time we did this project in this way: https://t.co/Aiu2Pa8IXQ
We've changed this project several times, trying to reach the largest audience we can. #catholicedchat

we just integrated high quality video conferencing into our large group instruction room. The next day a girl on a college visit attended the class while in her car through Google Hangouts. Much better use than board meetings :) #catholicedchat
if you get them into G-photos and make it a shared collaborative album, Google will auto tag by scene elements and even find common pictures of students. #catholicedchat#ineedapictureofthechapelandatree
Have a good weekend, #CatholicEdChat! As we are in the midst of two great Marian celebrations (Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary today and Feast of the Holy Name of Mary on September 12), let Mary draw you, your students, and all your community closer to her Son.
