Hello! I’m Nicole. I work in BCPSS. I will be one of the people facilitating the discussion tonight.
I am the lead learner and principal at Parkdale Elementary a Pre-k to gr 6 building.
Hi This is Angie from MSDE. Very excited to discuss teacher empowerment!
Patricia Twitty PGCPS looking forward to the collaboration
Tonight we are discussing “Chapters 5&7 for .” We will use the Q/A format.
Hi Lisa! Glad you are here!
Michael < blended specialist > at Starbucks w/ coffee, wifi, and . All is good.
Wendy from AACPS. Hello everyone!
A1: I like to think Purpose would be a strength in my office. We try to plan events and activities with purpose.
A1: Focus is an area of improvement for us. We feel like we have so many demands.
A1: Learning is a strength in my school. Most teachers are open to learning new things.
WOW! to have a set focus in your location. We often feel like we have so many demands, without focus.
That is is a school culture.
How refreshing! Teachers wanting to know more and do more!
A1: Purpose would definitely be our school's strength.
A1: Yup, joining the chorus on focus as a strength. We identify a focus and dedicate resources to it. Improvement? Inclusion.
Starting with WHY great TED TALK!
That is a great school culture! What does the leadership do to promote or encourage this?
If you do not have the book nearby, think about and share an idea from Chapter 5 or 7 that spoke to you.
Q2: Lurking guiltily. I did not read Brad's chapter but did tweet excitedly about 's earlier today. Extra credit?
I agree, we need to focus, it always seems to be so much on the plate.
That is great! That is how teacher leaders are made!
Focus is a clear sign of leadership! https://t.co/KEuTaJetVD
A1: Yup, joining the chorus on focus as a strength. We identify a focus and dedicate resources to it. Improvement? Inclusion.
. Well, it does seem to be a prerequisite for any sustained & purposeful growth. Thanks for the pat on the back.
How refreshing! Teachers wanting PD for learning and not for compensation. https://t.co/yACV9Dxv4v
A2: I get teachers want their own PD, but are they willing to put the work in for it? Like learning new tools, answering survey
provide and encourage educators to grow in their own way and time.
Seems like something I would enjoy very much!
A2: One truth that resonated with me was the dominance of the vocal minority. Need focus on the voices of all staff.
A3@@EdwardMFelegy is flipping pd by allowing teachers to chose a pd track and development goals.
Important w/ culture. If Ts are going to take ownership, Voice is a MUST https://t.co/fivBdyFxOk
A2: One truth that resonated with me was the dominance of the vocal minority. Need focus on the voices of all staff.
A3 this allows teachers to focus on what they need to grow and not a predetermined pd that might not meet needs.
This surfaces vital issue: Schools must embed in Ts day to do just these tasks.
A2: You know what else resonated with me, VOXER! Thank you . Best app ever!
A3: I do think flipped PD saves time but is not for all occasions.
A3: FPD would be great when initiatives are revisited. Some staff but feel comfortable, where new staff might need more support.
this is a must. We can't keep doing everything and change everything at the same time
I so agree. Just because it can be flipped, doesn't mean it should be flipped.
A3: What can we do before a meeting so that we spend our team time applying, analyzing, discussing, digesting...
A4: Key is transparency, reference to shared goals, & data to support the claim to the learning as "essential."
teachers are really excited and stepping out of their content comfort zone.
What are mini-learning tracks?
A3 FPD for basic knowledge-extend learning during face to face time
Yes, so many modalities & sequences possible. One in particular includes f2f socialization 1st.
Wow! Sounds great! I would like to hear about the tracks and how you are offering them!
Good point. I just feel sometimes their voices are all we here and others become afraid to speak up.
Reading, Math, Technology, Environmental Literacy, ESOL
which is very important for growth!
Sounds like you are empowering teachers. Do you think they are more motivated?
A culture must be established in a school, like a classroom, before any new pd will work.
I am excited to hear how is goes. Is this your first attempt at mini-learning tracks?
A5: Edcamps - provide a different kind of experience for teachers that has its own value. At the moment PD
A5 Twitter really starting to build my PLN- it took awhile
Me too! I love using it for academic purposes. The connections are endless.
I was very excited the first time I learned about the law of 2 feet...best rule ever for PD
I agree it did take a while. For me it went from lurker to engaged learner to cross over to PLN
on my bucket list. I missed our county one this weekend because I was sick.
A5: What's in a name? Everything! Totally piqued my interest in the "smackdown." Going to read this here chapter now.
From a workshop: In order to assimilate change/learning, you must first un-learn old learning https://t.co/eVlHuxOVRw
this is a must. We can't keep doing everything and change everything at the same time
A5 I love Playdates, we played one but it got snowed out. Looking forward planning again.
Would like to learn more about smackdowns
Keep a look out this summer.... =)
That was so fun!!! I hope we can have another in the Fall! https://t.co/2GIBL71YTP

A6 Would like to help more teachers engage in Twitter- show them what's available
I agree. It takes only a small amount of time for a smackdown and I can explore what I want later.
Whenever I have tried to explain Twitter, I do not seem to get the message across. =( https://t.co/4zWntZxoLK
A6 Would like to help more teachers engage in Twitter- show them what's available

Me too! I love using it for academic purposes. The connections are endless.
Stepping back as I haven't read the book. Don't teach Ss old learning
me too No one ever seems interested or willing to try
It did take me a while to understand the a value....
Need to rethink approach to sharing all the good that comes from Twitter
Agreed, Any suggestions out there? https://t.co/JBt5UnzDcU
Need to rethink approach to sharing all the good that comes from Twitter
Yes need to to explore on my own. A follow up would have been helpful once I got the hang of it
