  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:07 PM EST
Yeah, surprisingly we got out early on Monday because they were talking bad weather. We got burned 2 years ago, so now we are playing it safe always. #idedchat #snopocalypse2018

  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:07 PM EST
A1: UDL - Universal Design for Learning. A framework for thinking through/planning instruction that meets all students where they are and take them where they need to be. #IDedchat
  • hiccupc Nov 14 @ 10:07 PM EST
Small world, eh? Love running into people from my checkered past, even elementary school days. Kim is great, and glad to run into her, even if it's just online! #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:07 PM EST
A1: I'll be honest, I've had to look up what the actual definition was. #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:08 PM EST
That is OK! :-) I am sure there are better explanations than mine - continually working to wrap my brain around it. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • hiccupc Nov 14 @ 10:09 PM EST
Have had to delve into universal design in a few areas. Not just an education term, but is something that goes further than just learning. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 14 @ 10:09 PM EST
Hi. Kevin in Indianapolis. Waiting on the snow and ice. Guess we will see what happens in the morning. #idedchat
  • assignmenthelp Nov 14 @ 10:10 PM EST
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:10 PM EST
A1: In my reading it is centered around meeting the needs of ALL students which can be helpful for them, but time consuming for teachers at times. #idedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:10 PM EST
See what's left from what makes it's way through here. #idedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:11 PM EST
Please tell us a little more about what you mean here Chris. #IDedchat
    In reply to @hiccupc
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:12 PM EST
A1: UDL helps address equity - making sure all students have equal opportunity to learn. #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:13 PM EST
Q2: How is UDL different than differentiation? (You may have to research if you don't know) #IDedchat :-)
  • hiccupc Nov 14 @ 10:14 PM EST
Universal Design is a way for all to access something, regardless of physical or mental ability, hindrances or handicaps. At least trying to accommodate all. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • IDcoachingnet Nov 14 @ 10:15 PM EST
Equity is at the heart of UDL! #IDedchat #IDcoachnet
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:15 PM EST
A2: Here is a great explanation of the difference between UDL and Differentiation - a Dinner Party Analogy: https://t.co/tkZRhfgqvU #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:16 PM EST
A2: Differentiated is geared towards one particular individual, and universal is well...universal. I THINK I'm on the right track? Maybe? #idedchat
  • hiccupc Nov 14 @ 10:16 PM EST
A2: Differentiation is after the fact. "Wow, my 3 Ss rocked that, what next? Or "Whoa, that was rough, what now?" Universal Design is proactive, creating for all before the fact. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 14 @ 10:16 PM EST
R2: if I am reading the definition of UDL, it means that we are providing every child with the learning environment for idea learning to take place. DI would be changing how each child is learning. #idedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:17 PM EST
Ok this video has helped a little. https://t.co/mB1QUXx2L4 #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:17 PM EST
A2: With differentiation the teacher is doing the work of deciding what a learner needs; with UDL the teachers provides a "buffet" and the student decides what is best for them. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 14 @ 10:17 PM EST
    I concur. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 14 @ 10:18 PM EST
    We like buffets. #IDedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • IDcoachingnet Nov 14 @ 10:18 PM EST
    A2: I love the dinner party analogy offered here: https://t.co/hFP8Pp8utr #IDedchat #IDcoachnet
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:19 PM EST
Yes - and they benefit more that who it was intended for. :-) #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:20 PM EST
    We sure do #idedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio, @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:20 PM EST
    You are getting there! #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:21 PM EST
    Whew! What a relief #idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:21 PM EST
Q3: What might be challenging about implementing universal design for learning? How do you overcome those challenges? #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 14 @ 10:21 PM EST
So @averyteach, would you say that DI is more controlled by the T versus the UDL is more student controlled? #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:22 PM EST
That is my understanding. You offer multiple opportunities to access content - students decide which way is best for them. #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 14 @ 10:22 PM EST
R3: I’m guessing that whomever is controlling the menu of the buffet could get a little overwhelmed with the cooking. #idedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 14 @ 10:23 PM EST
So, my thinking is that the Ss might not pick the correct way that is best for them. How does that work if this occurs? #IDEdchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:24 PM EST
A3: I want to say time is a challenge. Trying to incorporate it and have it be impactful in your Ss learning. #idedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:25 PM EST
Or the ones that regardless of the nudges that we give students does not work? #idedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio, @averyteach
  • IDcoachingnet Nov 14 @ 10:26 PM EST
R3: Creating learning activities using UDL requires more intentional planning using the principles as a lens for design. #IDedchat #IDcoachnet
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:27 PM EST
Jessie keeps trying to help me type my responses tonight...she’s not very helpful 😂#IDedchat
  • IDcoachingnet Nov 14 @ 10:28 PM EST
Wondering right beside you. This might just take some individual coaching if a student chooses an option that doesn't support his/her need. #IDedchat #IDcoachnet
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio, @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:28 PM EST
Time and resources could both be challenges. You need to be intentional and consider weighing depth over breadth of content. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 14 @ 10:29 PM EST
Alright, so can #UDL and #DI be incorporated concurrently? #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:29 PM EST
Q4: UDL Has 3 major principles: Representation, Action and Expression, and Engagement. What is your interpretation of each of these principles? #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:30 PM EST
As well as interchangeably if needed? #idedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:30 PM EST
I think possibly. Let's research/look at the next Q to see if that gives us any insight. #IDedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:32 PM EST
A4: Representation: Giving students various methods of gaining information/content. #IDedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Nov 14 @ 10:33 PM EST
R4: engagement is always the aspect that is hard to measure. My engagement may look totally different than someone else’s. Doesn’t mean that I’m more engaged or less engaged. #IDEdchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:33 PM EST
Here is a great site that explains "representation" - it gives some concrete examples. https://t.co/YHZYMuA9sQ #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:34 PM EST
Agreed! That is what I have an issue with in regards to our evaluation system. 1 student may be completely auditory and the student next to him could be entirely visual. Learning looks different #idedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:34 PM EST
A4: Action and Expression - Givings students choice in demonstrating what they know and can do. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:34 PM EST
A4: Engagement is tough to measure and define as it looks different from one person to the next. #idedchat
  • IDcoachingnet Nov 14 @ 10:35 PM EST
A4: UDL principles encourage us to offer multiple ways for students access material (representation), engage with it (engagement), and show what they know (action & expression) #IDedchat #IDcoachnet
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:35 PM EST
A4: Representation is all about how whatever it is that you are trying to get across is displayed to the receiver. #idedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:36 PM EST
A4: Action and expression to me is putting UDL in place and letting individuals find ways to have it impact their learning? #idedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:36 PM EST
A4: Engagement (through the UDL lens): Taps into a student's interest; offers appropriate challenge; and increases motivation. #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:37 PM EST
GAH I should have clicked the link BEFORE I answered. #idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:37 PM EST
Check out this site that gives examples of Action and Expression: https://t.co/nGM7EUgLLT #IDedchat

  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:38 PM EST
    He He He... #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:39 PM EST
I agree it can look different for each student - I think where we have to be intentional is looking at the "challenge" for the student - we want them to have some productive struggle. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:41 PM EST
Q5: How might you balance offering voice and choice with having structure and meeting your objectives? #IDedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:42 PM EST
I am just trying to think about presenting this to Ts who haven't heard about it before. This is going to seem extremely overwhelming. How does one get "buy-in" with a concept such as this? #idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:43 PM EST
    #IDedchat
    • rhonda_urquidi Nov 14 @ 10:42 PM EST
I wonder in a case like that if any option is going to "work."
      In reply to @WinkelerD, @LCHS_Bio, @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:44 PM EST
That is a great question Dan. I think you have to try it yourself first. Start small....you might fail..but try again. See how students respond. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @LCHS_Bio
  • rhonda_urquidi Nov 14 @ 10:44 PM EST
UDL can address differentiation, but it doesn't always work the other way around. #idedchat #idcoachnet
    In reply to @averyteach
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:45 PM EST
A5: I think you can continue to have structure even with students having voice and choice - it comes back to the objectives and Essential Question. #IDedchat
  • IDcoachingnet Nov 14 @ 10:46 PM EST
During observations or PLNs, highlight what they are already doing that aligns to the UDL guidelines. Naming moves goes far. #strengthbasedcoaching #IDcoachnet #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @averyteach, @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:47 PM EST
What if...you tried just one aspect of UDL - just being intentional about how students can access information. Perhaps you have give them the choice of reading an article, watching a video, analyzing an infographic, listening to a podcast all around the same topic. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @LCHS_Bio
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:47 PM EST
Agreed. Definitely need it modeled in order to have it be effective. #idedchat #whowantstomodelforme
    In reply to @averyteach, @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:48 PM EST
I love this idea - when teachers see that they already have pieces in place, it is easier to see what other pieces can be added/adjusted. #IDedchat
    In reply to @IDcoachingnet, @WinkelerD, @LCHS_Bio
  • IDcoachingnet Nov 14 @ 10:48 PM EST
A5: robust, meaningful learning objectives only become more so when students get to explore and share their knowledge in multiple ways. #IDedchat #IDcoachnet
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:49 PM EST
It's all about making the connections and realizing we do this almost daily, just a new term put to it. #idedchat
    In reply to @averyteach, @IDcoachingnet, @LCHS_Bio
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:50 PM EST
Q6: What might “multiple representations of assessment” look like? #IDedchat
  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:50 PM EST
YES! I do believe that UDL can help shift a teacher centered classroom into student empowered classroom. But it does take baby steps for some. #IDedchat
    In reply to @WinkelerD, @IDcoachingnet, @LCHS_Bio
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:51 PM EST
A6: Big concept but conveyed in several different way by students. Some may do a PPT, an infographic, a posterboard, and some may want to take a paper and pencil assessment. Some may even want to write an essay/narrative. #idedchat
  • rhonda_urquidi Nov 14 @ 10:52 PM EST
Yes! Designing to the edges is something I've been able to discuss with the Colonel at Mountian Home Air Force Base. There is no one who "fits" the description of average. For example, pilots come in all shapes and sizes, so make their needs adjustable! #idcoachnet #IDedchat

    Love it! #IDedchat
    In reply to @rhonda_urquidi, @hiccupc
  • IDcoachingnet Nov 14 @ 10:54 PM EST
Right! Being able to name our moves that align with the UDL framework add more intentionality to our work. #IDedchat

  • averyteach - Moderator Nov 14 @ 10:54 PM EST
Q7: Share successes you have had in supporting the needs of all learners? #IDedchat

    In reply to @WinkelerD
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:57 PM EST
A7: All of my assessments are done online. I have one boy on an IEP and he feels rushed taking them online when all of his neighbors are done, so I print them off, modify and shorten for him. #idedchat
  • WinkelerD Nov 14 @ 10:57 PM EST

Q8: What are your big take aways from tonight’s chat? (other than St Louis will have a snow day tomorrow). #IDedchat :-)
  • IDcoachingnet Nov 14 @ 10:58 PM EST
A7: I love supporting students and teachers in Guideline 6: Executive Functioning. It is so powerful when a learner sets their own goal and self-evaluates and reflects as they strive towards it. #IDedchat #IDcoachnet
  • rhonda_urquidi Nov 14 @ 10:59 PM EST
The key term is assessment. Formative assessments and summative can be project based, or just some choices for topics, or how to address those topics. Test. That word is not the same. That throws us sometimes. #idcoachnet #IDedchat
