I'm Heather Singmaster, Associate Director, Center for Global Education at @AsiaSocietyEDU (the sponsor of #Globaledchat). I LOVE visiting cities no matter what country I'm in. Buenos Aires, Shanghai, London, Melbourne, I love them all!
Today we continue our special #GlobalEdChat series on teaching the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We welcome your feedback and ideas for future chats and hosts! #Teachsdgs
Matt from NY here. One of my favoritecities visited would have to be Portland OR. Visited last year for the ISSN Summer Institute and had an eye opening experience! #GlobalEdChat
A1: I live in Portland, OR, once hailed as the model for sustainable living. But now we are facing equity issues including a rise in homelessness. I'm interested in how we can teach these issues and get the next generation to think more equitably! #globaledchat
Cities are very unnatural places for human habitation. Too crowded - forced to live in the sky and travel under the ground. How can cities be planned to make them feel more like living in the country? #globaledchat
A1:I haven't taught a lot on this yet, but love teaching about the culture of our community, & how we work together to support each other. My husband is on the Chamber of Commerce and offers a great perspective to share. #globaledchat
Our tiny school in Ireland @CloughfinNS is about to do another project on Global goals and would love to connect with others who are interested #globaledchat
I suppose it depends on whether you're there because of lack of options or because you've chosen to be there. The skyline and the bustle are appealing to many. #GlobalEdChat
A2: I'm currently working on a project to create sample projects for each of the SDGs to help #CTE/#STEM educators teach them. So I'm interested to hear what examples you all have! #globaledchat
Q2. Ok, lets get another prompt going. Are there connections between SDG 11 and any current programs you have at your school?#globaledchat#teachsdgs#globaledchat
A1: I have taught a unit for years in my #GIS class about gentrification when I was in Chicago & urban planning. That was my backup career idea before ed! #Globaledchat
A2. For the past few years, I've invited city councilors in to discuss city planning with my 8th graders. It's amazing how much the kids learn from this experience. #globaledchat
A2: Joining late. I am Jen from VA. My school does an exchange with a Singaporean school, so I am looking for ideas to leverage the exchange to teach SDG11. #globaledchat
A2: when I taught in @ChiPubSchools, I taught about where food deserts are located in our city, gentrification & the interplay of social class & the school system of a city #globaledchat
A2 Our AP Human Geography teachers have connections with this goal. As do IB Geo teachers. I love seeing schools explore urban food deserts. #globaledchat
A2: I weave #teachsdgs into as many lessons as I can -social studies and reading are the easiest. Teaching 1st grade, I do a lot of read-alouds to build connections for my Ss. Would love more resources! #globaledchat
A2 not currently but our grade 6&7 have been working on the #sdgs earlier this year... Now they are able to relate to them.Few of them also established connection between the BLACK HISTORY MONTH TO THE #SDGs... #globaledchat
That's a great one! A culinary arts teacher in Missouri created a project for us on food deserts - she is converting a school bus into a food truck so students can provide healthy food options to people in food deserts! https://t.co/j9ewAccGVi#globaledchat
A3: Portland is one of the least diverse cities in the country - so there are many opportunities to address inclusivity and equity issues here! #globaledchat
I have a bunch of great resources, but don't have them at my fingertips now. I'll post more later. Got them at #NCTE WLU where I presented last summer. #globaledchat
A3: Portland is one of the least diverse cities in the country - so there are many opportunities to address inclusivity and equity issues here! #globaledchat
A3 The beauty of the UNSDG is the local application to meet a global outcome. Informing your community, service learning, recycling programs, are all possible connections to UN #11 #globaledchat
Q4: This is a fun one to explore. Over 50% of the world's population lives in a city. Tweet an "urban image" you would use with students and why. #globaledchat#teachsdgs#globaledchat
A3. My students are currently preparing SDG slideshows to take into the community. A city council presentation is in the works. Awareness has to come first. #globaledchat
A3. Our students do look at creating sustainsble cities and engage with eco friendly techniques to build those... Digital and product Design take them through the Knowledge & understanding of the topic and then they apply themselves and model the concept. #globaledchat
A4: I'd love to discuss the importance of green space - like this new proposal to create the country's largest urban green space in Dallas (10,000 acres!). #globaledchat#teachsdgs#SDG11https://t.co/nR7saf5Uhm
Transportation is an interesting area to investigate. I wonder about matching 'life planning' to longer term societal trends. Eg, my area of work requires me to have personal transportation. I couldn't function with public trans. How might we change this? #globaledchat
A3: Absolutely! My Ss have expressed a lot of interested in American consumption and it's effects. That may be a good lens thru which to examine SDG11 #globaledchat
Greetings #globaledchat! Here in Philadelphia a group of us is exploring “city as classroom” thru a Global STEAM lens for the school district. Experiential, mentor-backed, strengths-based, equity-fueled, PBL 2.0
A4: I did so many different maps of Chicago like this w/ my #GIS classes. Love looking at all the different ways data can be displayed in a city. #Globaledchat
A4: The USDA has an interactive food desert mapper that is a great entry point to begin exploring the intersectionality of the goals. #GlobalEdChat#TeachSDGs
Q5. Let's keep the collaboration going! Share an idea on how you can teach students about sustainability and a resource for doing so. #globaledchat#teachsdgs#globaledchat
A5: I love the Future City competition from @DiscoverEorg. It's a project-based international learning program where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. https://t.co/J7yVXVP3Ur#globaledchat#globaled
A5: Have you looked at the inspiring work of Bronwyn? She started with the book, The Book of What If. I've taught from her @flipgrid posts and had tremendous success. https://t.co/VVNLmEGLpf#globaledchat
A5: We spent time in 1st grade thinking #TeachSDGs in a localized way by studying biomimicry, ant colonies, and systems thinking to redesign our campus carpool system. #Globaledchat
A5: I love the Future City competition from @DiscoverEorg. It's a project-based international learning program where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. https://t.co/J7yVXVP3Ur#globaledchat#globaled
Q6. Two more prompts for tonight. Keep it going! Share a resource or advocacy tool you could use to further your own understanding of sustainability. #globaledchat#teachsdgs#globaledchat
Don't forget about https://t.co/v8V6YSshXQ as a resource too - lots of data from US Census and others on how global our states and counties are! #globaledchat
A6: I taught myself how to use @arcgis mapping software w/ my Ss. It is an invaluable tool & so many jobs require it. I got asked in my 1st yr teaching if I had any alums yet! #Globaledchat
A7: I wonder where teachers see SDG #11 in terms of priority compared to the other goals. Is #11 more of a priority than others? The same? #globaledchat
A7. This is a hopeful quote from last year's UN progress report. "As of May 2017, 149 countries were developing national-level urban policies." #globaledchat
A7. How can we make kids feel like they are stakeholders in the development and sustainability of their cities? Where's the relevance for them? #globaledchat
