If you are a bilingual educator, we encourage you to participate in the #DualLangChat and begin to grow a strong bilingual educator professional learning network (PLN). Amazing things happen when you connect with teachers who share similar interests and passions.
Our program is new (starting next year). We’ve have an amazing dual immersion committee full of admin, school leaders, teachers, board members, and parents who work together to ensure all stakeholders are on board and understand our program. #DualLangChat
@DualLangChat Q1 - There is a Master plan but to be honest, it’s in a binder that’s given to all teachers and that’s the last we see of it. Not sure what happens with it after that initial day of PD. #DualLangChat
@DualLangChat Q2 - For Multicultural Appreciation, we are working on developing a multicultural fair/celebration in which cultures are represented through dance, food, performances & with the help of the community. #DualLangChat
I plan on using authentic and rich Spanish literature. I will include themes that promotes culture, stories the students can relate to, teach about people that were important in their culture’s history & literature that the student can see themselves in #DualLangChat
Also teach about holidays around the world and holidays that the students’ families or ancestors celebrate. All of this will connect them to their culture and allow them embrace it. #DualLangChat
Our program was just recognized for the outstanding work that we do! We have 6 awesome teachers and great coordinator that works with our admin to follow and improve our mast plan each year #DualLangChat
Q2 our opening history unit for the school year focus on the ancient Aztec, Inca and Maya which is a great hook for our majority Latino population. Also, our Spanish teacher uses holidays to embed in our curriculum. We have videoconferencing w/ MEX DI schools too! #DualLangChat
Q2 #DualLangChat we incorporate authentic literature in various forms, such as poetry and novels. Try to include news from a variety of sources and places to include and learn current news around the world.
@DualLangChat Q3 - Flexible grouping is important to give students of different abilities the opportunity to help, learn & grow with their classmates. It keeps them engaged & thriving in a classroom bc their needs are being met through good teaching & these groups. #DualLangChat
Q3 #duallangchat I incorporate flexible grouping to develop a sense of confidence in our Ss. As with our knowledge and learning modalities, been flexible with our groups helps to understand and include the various interest in a reading or writing lesson.
Cooperative learning should be used as a part of my instruction because it makes the material the students are working on more meaningful and allows them to be successful. They are able to learn from one another.
Q3 Yes! I use it constantly for student to problem solve but for higher level Spanish leaders to lift up those students who need language help! I love using @historylabs which I have translated to make history hands on. #DualLangChat
Cooperative learning and flexible seating allow students to have collaborative conversations with peers without the pressure of individual whole group answers. Conversations mean students are processing their learning out loud and learning from each other #DualLangChat
@DualLangChat Q4 - The best way I monitor is through engaging conversations with them. I learn more through talking to the children than through any test or worksheet. I always repeat what they say & make corrections in my repeating if necessary. #DualLangChat
Q4 #DualLangChat to monitor Ss I have different approahes, using phrases to help them complete their thoughts is one of my favorites, also use four courners, Total Physical Response signals (TPR), we tweet, summarize and phraphrase constantly.
Q4 I use an interactive notebook to keep track of students writing. I use a variety of scaffolds like: color coding, sentence frames, paragraph organizers, and then slowly take certain things away. I constantly provide feedback for them to improve #DualLangChat
https://t.co/F73ItcP60b was created by the awesome @lizwon9 and I’ve which focus on ancient history that is an interactive collection of data to answer an essential question. I’ve translated some to use in my classroom #DuallangChat

I agree! I constantly walk and ask my collaborative groups of four if they understand and repeat my instructions. My @fitbit steps show how much I check for understanding! #DualLangChat

Q5 #DualLangChat my favorite quote about it describes it, and is part of my classroom quotes: Accents are a sign of bravery, and with that I give a big welcome to all of my Dual Language Ss. That sets the tone for my complete year!
@DualLangChat Q5 - We have a chart o the wall where we add synonyms of words so promote the understanding that there are various dialects of the Spanish language and one is not better or correct over another. We promote respect for all. #DualLangChat
I plan to promote proper terms but never say “that is wrong” or “that is not how you say it.” I want my kids to feel comfortable speaking. #DualLangChat
Q5: I'm from Uruguay so that for me and my learners comes naturally, I always ask my native and heritage speakers to contribute with their own words so that they feel included #duallangchat
Q5 My students are told to respect others. Students need to be shown that accent, no accent, pausing, etc is ok! We have to promote a positive learning environment #DualLangChat
Q6 students who are shy or struggle, I made sure to select them for questions I have already previewed their answers for or prompt them ahead of time to read something. Also, @ClassDojo works to randomly select students! #DualLangChat
Q6 #duallangchat This is definitely not easy but necessary- it’s important to get to know the kids abilities well in order to provide them with the necessary supports they may need. Gauging through authentic conversations and writing samples is key.
