Q1. "Your strongest superpower in the classroom is kid watching. Make it about what the kids are doing and saying."
How do you create a class/school environment that encourages and fosters kid watching?
#BookCampPD
A1 This year, as I go back to the classroom, the entire learning process will be about kid watching and conferencing. It is important to know students, watch for signs, certain words, feelings, moods. Build relationships with students. Listen to understand. #BookCampPD
A1b This year, I want my students to explore their identities. I want them to live their story in class. For that to happen, I must listen, watch and include every part of them in what we learn and do in class. I want my Ss to lead the learning and I help mentor them. #BookCampPD
A1. Encouraging educators to give students choice and voice by not being the only person talking in a classroom. Let the children guide the discussions. #BookCampPD
A1: leaving more time interacting with and less time just teaching to. If you are only focused on delivery when do you have to the time to watch and listen. #bookcampPD
Q1. "Your strongest superpower in the classroom is kid watching. Make it about what the kids are doing and saying."
How do you create a class/school environment that encourages and fosters kid watching?
#BookCampPD
A1 It is easier to kid watch if you have a student-led classroom. When you have time to kid watch, you learn so much and are able to be more responsive in your teaching! #BookCampPD
Q1. "Your strongest superpower in the classroom is kid watching. Make it about what the kids are doing and saying."
How do you create a class/school environment that encourages and fosters kid watching?
#BookCampPD
A1: It starts with building relationships and knowing who your students are. When you know your ss students you see them differently and can help meet their individual needs #BookCampPD
Q1. "Your strongest superpower in the classroom is kid watching. Make it about what the kids are doing and saying."
How do you create a class/school environment that encourages and fosters kid watching?
#BookCampPD
A1: A few years ago, I got rid of my teacher desk. Now, the only time that I sit down is on the floor with my kids to interact with them. I am always roaming the room! #BookCampPD
A1: I have plans for what needs to be accompllished for the day or week. However, I take my cue from my Ss and if their talk and interaction takes us down another path based on their need that is where we go. I'm there for their needs, not mine. #BookCampPD
A1: I let them work in collaborative groups. Give them a lot of choice and ask for their opinions to run activities in my class and at school. Already working on creating my first flipgrid of the year with them next week. #BookCampPD

A1: in Teach Like a Pirate by @burgessdave I learned that once I’m in the classroom with my students there should be NOTHING else distracting me...FULL immersion is what works to REALLY put attention to our Ss!
#bookcamppd
A1 -I returned this week with my teen humans. While allowing for a student led culture, I am also trying to create a holistic environment teaching them to code switch. I constantly remind them to "speak love" #bookcamppd

Q2 "If we want our kids to truly respect one another we have to meet them where they are...and find teachable moments along the way."
How do you include building respect & empathy in the classroom and allow for spontanteous teachable moments to lead your teaching?
#BookCampPD
I got rid of my teacher desk this year! So glad I did, but maaaaaan was I exhausted at the end of this week Friday. (I slept over 12 hours last night!) #BookCampPD
Exactly!! I always have my phone out because I like to take pictures but I am NOT using their time to check something personal! They need to feel we really care #BookCampPD
A2 As a teacher I need to be in tune with my students; have built relationships with them. Kindness, empathy, respect need to be part of daily interactions. I take any opportunity to celebrate Ss for good deeds & teach heart when needed. #BookCampPD
A1: I try & provide opportunities for Ss to practice social skills and just interact w/ classmates. This allows me to observe & learn so much from them as I walk around! #BookCampPD
A2b Being the Change has made me realize how important it is to reframe content to include more heart, kindness and empathy in everyday learning. We can't seperate SEL from content. They go hand in hand. We need to be there for kids. #BookCampPD
A2: After building relationships, create class buy in. The little moments can be the most powerful. When students see your values & expectations, they will do everything they can to follow & lead with you #bookcampPD
Q2 "If we want our kids to truly respect one another we have to meet them where they are...and find teachable moments along the way."
How do you include building respect & empathy in the classroom and allow for spontanteous teachable moments to lead your teaching?
#BookCampPD
A1. Cont. we just had an AMAZING meeting with students who want to help other students during advisory period. Kids watching each other...it can’t get better than that!!! #BookCampPD
A2: Goes back to the idea of being present. I find the best conversations around any topic are the ones we come to naturally. Starting with a reading that connects to them in a real way and following that path. Using BHH framework helps. #bookcamppd

A2 - I am working through this rn. My kiddos are fierce and passionate and vocal, and sometimes the mix of all those strong personalities lead to conflicting conversations that turn mean-spirited. #BookCampPD
Q2 "If we want our kids to truly respect one another we have to meet them where they are...and find teachable moments along the way."
How do you include building respect & empathy in the classroom and allow for spontanteous teachable moments to lead your teaching?
#BookCampPD
A2: building empathy and teachable moments is just as important as standards - so again I will stop the lesson to support the SEL moments based on what is happening with my Ss at the moment. It's hard to get academics if SEL isn't being met. #BookCampPD
Q3 "We can't let ourselves fall into the trap of erasure. Don't erase a person's identity to make yourself more comfortable.
How do you include student identity, stories & unique traits into your class to help everyone feel welcomed & loved for who they really are?
#BookCampPD
A2: This occurs daily in my 1st grade classroom! I constantly look for teachable moments to connect to conversations about respect & empathy. Kindness is a major heartbeat of our classroom! #BookCampPD
A3 All my students will be exploring their identities and stories in class. I will encourage them to bring something of theirs to help make our class ours. I am taking/giving challenge: mutually know 5 important things about each other. #BookCampPD
A2: First things first should be sociocultural approach! Ss need to feel that they matter before we begin demanding academic achievement.
I DON’T want my students to pass my class but FAIL in tapping into their potential and purpose in life!
#bookcamppd
A2. We have to explicitly teach these skills. Adults struggle with these as educators. Teaching the difference between empathy and sympathy is a good place to start!! #BookCampPD
A2: We have Morning Meeting each day that follows the @responsiveclass model. My kids greet each other with an appropriate handshake and they listen to each other share. This often leads to teachable moments!#BookCampPD
A2: We need to be role models for our students. They see us interacting with them and other adults at school. If you don't practice what you preach, you're not going to have an impact. we discuss a lot of these topics doing are Interactive read-alouds. #BookCampPD

A3 Build the room around the kids.. even if changes every period. Make it their space. Their music, their posters, their_________ Ownership and Safety have great power for a student. #bookcamppd
I’m using pictures books with my HS students and I have no shame saying it! It’s important to use rich literature with Ss even if it’s through a picture book! #bookcamppd
A3: One of my favorite sayings is “Just Do You”! It’s so important to build relationships that honor & celebrate being YOU!! We’re all unique and together we make a perfect team!
My Ss created #REALyouSnaps yesterday to share about them! So fun! #BookCampPD
A3: our school started morning meetings this year. I'm really wanting to get into classrooms to listen and learn more about our Ss to do more celebrating of who they are. #BookCampPD
Q4 "We can model for our students the power of compassion, of speaking up in the face of injusutice...even when it is hard."
How do you approach injustice/ bias/difficult conversations w/ your students? Why is it important to include these discussions in your class?

A4 I approach difficult conversations with honesty and vulnerability. As a HS teacher, it is important to allow students to share their thoughts/feelings. We need to helps Ss explore their ideas, thoughts and how to listen/understand others. #BookCampPD
A4- Open honest conversations that can happen once a relationship has been built. Our students are facing a lot and need to know we aren't going to hide it, but that we are their to help them through it. #BookCampPD

A3. In our new school within a school we have established me/we time where students will reflect upon their own unique features while also building the collective group as a family. Each member of our community brings something beautiful and valuable to strengthen us #BookCampPD
Next Saturday morning, @SaraKAhmed the author of "Being the Change" will join us. It will be our final chat on Saturday mornings as we are moving to Sunday evenings at 7:30 EST on Sept. 2. #BookCampPD
I so do. I have over 1,000 books in my room and was asked why when we have a library. My answer, kids need books and there are times when I need one to teach something on the fly because of something that has happened. #BookCampPD
Thank you for joining in today's chat!
So much incredible learnig. Keep leading with your heart. Keep Being the Change.

Very important to have mirrors that reflect their identity! It really encourages them to be the authors and characters in their own stories!
They also need windows to other cultures and perspectives different than their own! #WNDB 📚 #BookCampPD
