We chat every Tuesday night at 8:30-9:30 pm CST. All are welcome, especially EarlyEd teachers, leaders & experts. Co-founded & moderated by @techwnancy @JessicaCabeen & @VealHeidi
#ecechat Moday was great, then the cold front blew (gusts of 45 mph. Steady winds of 25 mph) in. Now it's COLD!! 35 degree temperature change in less than 24 hours!! BRRRR!
A1: Being familiar with the materials as a teacher, knowing the state standards, and finding extra materials/resources for extra support when needed. #ecechat
A1: there's a triangulation process of thoroughly knowing the material, knowing your students learning styles and implementing with planned differentiation #ECEchat
A1: Math “builds on prior knowledge.” Adjusting the curriculum and/or teaching what the students *need* (not what you have to) to learn to succeed and grow. Don’t move on if students are not showing understanding or mastery. #ECEchat
A1: Reviewing standards and finding out where students are according to these standards. Differentiating to create an appropriately challenging opportunity for each kiddo. #ECEchat
#ECEchat A2.. understating how to brake down #'s, and how a number could b represented by sets. N how a number has a whole n parts... how 5 contains numbers 1-4
A3: Number sense: Counting, one-to-one correspondence, and identifying numbers. Often times Ss are simply lacking opportunity, experiences, modeling! #ECEchat
A2: Basically numbers and counting are the foundation. The sooner students can begin to recognize and subitize then they can concentrate on problem solving which builds their growth to the next concept/level #ecechat
Hi everyone, this is our first #ECEchat! We would love to hear your thoughts on bilingual students. What do you find to be effective teaching strategies for bilingual children?
A3 #ecechat I feel like my babes struggle the most with one-to-one corr. I wish I knew...I'd like to blame it on the fast-paced world we live in. Counting objects just doesn't come naturally. Neither does slowing down and counting.
A3: Greater/more and fewer/less than concepts, 1 to 1 correspondence, number recognition. I think one of the main reasons is lack of experience. #ecechat
Yes, the struggle between helping kids really understand the symbolic representation of a number is so important! Helps to differentiate btwn letters and numbers #ecechat
A3: I see my students have decent one to one correspondence and counting skills but some struggle with the number recognition. I think they may just have trouble relating the number to the amount. #ecechat
A3: Number sense; number identification, making sets; I think because it encompasses many different skills within one area, it takes a little longer to develop the overall strength in this area. #ECEchat
Q4: When it comes to student achievement, non-cognitive skills like confidence, grit and self-control can have a big impact. How can teachers build students' confidence in math? #ECEchat
A4: Make math fun! Play math games, read math books, bring math to life, make it real for them! Help remove the fear children have surrounding math! #ECEchat
A4 differentiate for each and start where they have solid knowledge and build from there with lots of praise and S/E support; and make it fun to build the ❤️ of math! #ECEchat
#ECEchat A4 I think making it fun and exciting is important. Celebrating success helping them to know yes they can. Also making real life connections help.
A4: Q4: Embedding real life application, problem solving, and authentic praise for effort to instill that growth mindset! Persistence must be explicitly taught and modeled by T #ecechat
Q4: When it comes to student achievement, non-cognitive skills like confidence, grit and self-control can have a big impact. How can teachers build students' confidence in math? #ECEchat
A4: having hands on fun and engaging math activities, and teaching kids to have a growth mindset and to never give up. Number talks are a great way to see how the kids are understanding numbers. #ecechat
A4: remind Ss daily that they are mathematicians. Confidence is built up the most through small group intentional and differentiated instruction #ECEchat
#ecechat A4: Routines and procedures. Building relationships with students. Be S's biggest cheerleader! When they feel good about themselves, they naturally gain confidence.
Q4: When it comes to student achievement, non-cognitive skills like confidence, grit and self-control can have a big impact. How can teachers build students' confidence in math? #ECEchat
Yes, as Ts, we have to be careful not to share a negative mindset about a subject just because it's not our favorite or strength. I was guilty of this in my early years of teaching pre-k #ecechat
A4: by allowing choices in their learning. Provide options-for instance a learning menu. Give praise-have a positive/enthusiastic demeanor. We should try not to correct them all the time but find a way to acknowledge their effort. Engaging/purposeful lessons they enjoy #ecechat
#ecechat If you're located near south-central Kansas, anything that @reneesmith1 teaches out of @ESSDACK will be amazing! She is a great instructor and helped me get over my math fears and stigma from a really crappy h.s. teacher I had that ruined math for me.
A5: I was able to go to #TERC as a beginning teacher and the @INV3_Math strategies are research based and have stuck with my math instruction the most #ECEchat
A4 Use good literature to reinforce math themes. Raise the Praise by promoting a learning environment where mistakes are ok & students are comfortable #ECEchat
A1 You can do an exit ticket activity the day before the lesson to see what the students know about the math lesson you will be teaching the next day. Depending on how they answer, you will know whether or not they have past knowledge about the topic. #ECEchat
a4: Acknowledging effort rather than outcomes. 'You worked hard to accomplish XYZ.' 'You paid attention to the details in your work.' 'You stayed focused for 20 minutes!' #ECEchat
A5: anything by Juanita Copley! I learned so much from her on a weeklong TOT I attended several years ago. Also, Hands On Standards has great games and lessons to use those manipulatives we all have #ecechat
#ECEchat A5 I think finding trainings that connect math and other subjects is important. Especially math embedded with technology because it ignites a fire of interest.
A3 I am still studying to become a teacher, but in my classes, we discuss some struggles that our students may face. For example, when adding, students may struggle with the concept of regrouping. We are learning different algorithms that can help students comprehend #ECEchat
A2 So far, I think that students must comprehend how to use base ten blocks. If they can fully understand how they work, this will make addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division easier. #ECEchat
