A4: furthering education should not result in years and years of debt😥#collschat
  • kysmith424 Dec 6 @ 7:31 PM EST
A4: and its not just college - pay for SAT/ACT, to send those scores to colleges, pay for applications, pay to reserve your spot! #collschat
  • colls_academic Dec 6 @ 7:31 PM EST
A4: If that 538% were proportionate to grads finding jobs and earning a living, I might be able to use a different gif but #collschat
  • whalen - Moderator Dec 6 @ 7:31 PM EST
    A5: How much?? Seriously?? #collschat
  • whalen - Moderator Dec 6 @ 7:33 PM EST
Q5: Given your college experience - What do you think of the Credentials, Competency & Individual Pathways proposals? #collschat
  • mmebriggs11 Dec 6 @ 7:34 PM EST
Q5: While I support a rounded education, many "gen-eds" were irrelevant and wasted time I wanted to spend studying other subjects #collschat
  • whalen - Moderator Dec 6 @ 7:35 PM EST
A5: We already discussed a bit - while I think things need to change, this was where Rose lost me a bit #collschat
  • MsYucis Dec 6 @ 7:35 PM EST
A5: all the ed classes I took taught me next to nothing. Including my Supervisor cert classes! #collschat
  • colls_academic Dec 6 @ 7:35 PM EST
A5: I think early undergrad is too much like HS. Let's get rid of gen ed courses and get down to business. That would help. #collschat
  • MsYucis Dec 6 @ 7:36 PM EST
some of my Core classes were so interesting though- never would have taken them if they weren't reqs. Meteorology! #collschat
    In reply to @mmebriggs11
  • whalen - Moderator Dec 6 @ 7:37 PM EST
A5: I loved my Core classes - one of the first times I felt a true passion for learning just to learn #collschat
  • mr_dfenton Dec 6 @ 7:37 PM EST
A5: Definitely intrigued by Rose's ideas. But would I jump at the chance to enroll in his hypothetical school? Probably not. #collschat
  • whalen - Moderator Dec 6 @ 7:38 PM EST
A5: That said - I think grades are really silly. Like, seriously? Its just so ingrained, but means so little. #collschat
  • cwahlCHS Dec 6 @ 7:38 PM EST
A5: Measuring competency to earn credentials says you really know your stuff. Every day lately I ask, do my Ss REALLY need this?? #collschat
  • MsYucis Dec 6 @ 7:39 PM EST
I went to college before it was expensive! So yes, it was worth it. #collschat
    In reply to @mmebriggs11
  • JB_Popliteus Dec 6 @ 7:39 PM EST
A5: my undergrad was exercise science - I didn't go into the field, but I loved it and still use a lot of the knowledge/skills #collschat
  • kysmith424 Dec 6 @ 7:39 PM EST
A5: was it necessary to take a Lit course as a business major...not really. not what I was there for. (sorry Eng teachers!) #collschat
  • whalen - Moderator Dec 6 @ 7:40 PM EST
Q6: Rose calls out Public education as the starting point to individualize opportunity. Agree or disagree? What can we do? #collschat
  • kysmith424 Dec 6 @ 7:40 PM EST
A5: I did my best and was the most motivated in classes that focused on my major or were loosely related #collschat
  • mr_dfenton Dec 6 @ 7:42 PM EST
A6: Agreed. What can we do? Start teaching kids instead of only tests and standards. #collschat
  • colls_academic Dec 6 @ 7:43 PM EST
A6: I actually this we do this better than most already. How many opportunities do our kids have bc of adults who care? #collschat
  • colls_academic Dec 6 @ 7:44 PM EST
    A6: Actually, @CollsChoirs idea/video today is a good first step, right? #collschat
    In reply to @CollsChoirs
  • MsYucis Dec 6 @ 7:45 PM EST
A6: Student choice wherever possible & allow students extended time if they need it. #collschat
  • cwahlCHS Dec 6 @ 7:46 PM EST
A6: re: Q1, our Ss know at times they need to conform, they get many opps to be individuals. Our Ts see to it, don't you think? #collschat
  • whalen - Moderator Dec 6 @ 7:47 PM EST
Q7: Rose says American dream is to become the best we can be "on our own terms" Do you see this improving for next generation? #collschat
  • JB_Popliteus Dec 6 @ 7:47 PM EST
A6: Colls does a good job at fostering this idea - with the makerspace. I will always advocate for more PBL #collschat
  • whalen - Moderator Dec 6 @ 7:47 PM EST
A6: I worry that the public schools that can truly individualize the way he advocates are the wealthiest #collschat
  • MsYucis Dec 6 @ 7:47 PM EST
yes! Helped students see that they are valued as individuals #collschat
    In reply to @colls_academic, @CollsChoirs
  • whalen - Moderator Dec 6 @ 7:47 PM EST
A6: To truly transform, we have to combat things as a community, and poverty has to be addressed #collschat
  • kysmith424 Dec 6 @ 7:48 PM EST
Agree completely. opportunities that are accessible to some are not even an option for others. #collschat
    In reply to @whalen
  • mr_dfenton Dec 6 @ 7:50 PM EST
A7: Definitely see this generation achieving dreams on their own terms, which is awesome. The 'gig economy' is a good example. #collschat
  • colls_academic Dec 6 @ 7:50 PM EST
A7: This will likely be difficult under soon-to-be administration. That is so sad. #collschat

A8: Really loved the book - cant recommend it enough. If nothing else it breaks apart my own thoughts and limitations on myself #collschat
  • cwahlCHS Dec 6 @ 7:58 PM EST
A8: It is possible to run a successful business without a lot of conformity. If we can, we should apply this with our Ss! #collschat
  • kysmith424 Dec 6 @ 7:59 PM EST
A8: I really liked this book. It really made me rethink some things - my contribution to my job and my own career. #collschat
  • colls_academic Dec 6 @ 8:00 PM EST
A8: I had never considered my own averageness or that of the career we chose until this book. Thanks for being awesome, all. #collschat
