Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1 Excited to collaborate and share ideas with you during our first chat of 2019 about empowering student voice in gifted education. #stuvoice#gtchat
A1) Ss always have options within the universe of the core curriculum re: topics to research individually, types of products they want to create, whether to work w/ partners or teams, & opportunity to compact the regular curriculum to have time to study different things. #gtchat
A1) a #ChoiceDrivenClassroom has students that are engaged because they are empowered to learn about what they like, how they like, and/or their input is valued in how they demonstrate knowledge and mastery. #gtchat
A1 A1 A choice-driven classroom is one that allows students to respond accordingly to their educational needs. This enables them to understand how they learn best and feel more ownership over their education #gtchat
A1 A choice-driven classroom values a student’s ability to choose while at the same time providing appropriate supports and guidance. Not all students … even GT … will adapt to this new way of learning easily. #gtchat
A1 A choice-driven classroom is one that allows students to respond accordingly to their educational needs. This enables them to understand how they learn best and feel more ownership over their education #gtchat
A1 A choice-driven classroom embodies the ideal that education is preparation for a life well lived and a civil right for all students; including GT. #gtchat

A2) Providing students the opportunity to have choice in what and how you learn taps into their intrinsic motivation to work on things that are valuable and interesting to them. #gtchat
A2 Gifted students need to be provided tangible ways to express their voice and have those sentiments respected if they are to take ownership of their own learning. #gtchat
A2) Too many kids get to a good environment already scarred by previous experience. Sometimes you have to validate them and make it safe for them to be different , look foolish, or make mistakes before they will tell you what they care about. #gtchat

A2 Gifted students must have a viable option for submitting feedback on a regular basis and have it validated through time response in the classroom. #gtchat

A2 Teachers need to be ready to relinquish control to some extent … motivation for GT students requires independence and developing leadership qualities in students with authenticity being the driver. #gtchat

A2) Ss also need to be taught how to take ownership. These can be done with mini lessons within a larger Project. Providing structures at the beginning helps them feel safe. #gtchat
A2: GT students will take ownership if the learning is seen as relevant to their lives. Have kids find a way to make it relevant by allowing for input/creativity.

A3 The Choose2Matter movement and @AngelaMaiers have great suggestions for incorporating student choice: good old-fashioned brainstorming, surveying student interests, debating topics, and voting as final affirmation. #gtchat
We are already half way through our chat! Thank you for sharing so many inspiring thoughts about empowering student voice in gifted education! Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation. #gtchat
A3) Choice in materials, in learning styles, in products, in resources, in selection of independent study topics, in time frames, in learning stations that allow choice. #gtchat
Intro: MS Gifted Intervention Specialist in Cincinnati, OH. One of my responsibilities involves leading a student choice driven elective for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders as a part of our district's gifted services. #gtchat

A3 Outside the classroom resources can lend direction and authentic responses to student choice via conferences organized and led by students and positive participation on social media platforms. #gtchat
A3 Teachers modeling the ‘process of choice’ can reduce the possibility of risk-aversion by making sure students understand choice works and affects their entire lives. #gtchat
A3) I’m out of the classroom, but I do work with Ss and Ts daily showing them easy ways to build in choice and options into daily tasks, lessons, or projects. My favorite is a blank space on the assignment/project that says - what’s your idea? #gtchat
A3: Student choice is not about allowing kids to run the show, but more about being flexible to allow for student input, opinions and decision-making. Say yes as often as possible when GT students want us to consider their views or suggestions about an assignment.
#gtchat
A4 Students do not control the classroom – they are participants and are subject to the same constraints there that are present in life … civility, available time, prior learning. #gtchat
A3) I give Ss time for #geniushour. @JoyKirr has a great Livebinder of information. I also turn as much as possible of what I have to teach into PBL. @GingerLewman
Has a Livebinder shelf full of resources. I have also used structures from @JohnSpencer 's boom Empower. #gtchat
A4) #gtchat no-but as much choice and leading with strengths/interests as possible. For example: My 1st graders can choose writing topics within the framework of nonfiction genre
A2) Students are motivated to learn about the things they are interested in. School tries to force students to engage in set curricula that are defined from the outside on a timeline dictated by pacing guides. Ideas here: https://t.co/EC77mUFcJ4#gtchat
A4 The idea of potentially limiting choices in a choice-driven classroom is not the antithesis of such but the validation that it is a ‘process’ and not a ‘result’. Guard rails as guide-rails suddenly makes sense. #gtchat
A4) Ss should have choice in how they communicate their understandings & in ways they use info to create new ideas. The T however, must control the universe of the curriculum to ensure Ss are exposed to all the content they will need for scaffolding into further study. #gtchat
A4: Students don't need to choose everything. Once we establish a safe, structured learning environment, we can offer choice based on student needs. Each class may have a different level of choice depending on individuals. #gtchat
A5 Assessments must reflect the reality of choice-driven classrooms … students must have responsible influence in how their work is assessed. Authentic assessment includes self-reflection, peer assessment, response to personal inquiry. #gtchat
A5) #gtchat with clear parameters and rubrics that students know/understand and use to complete assignments. Again, what is the learning and now here are all the ways to show it
A5) we have to write our own standards, do quarterly report cards so we assess informally and formally& share. We then do post post assessments to look at retention over time & w plb and choice retention & engagement go up- WAY UP #gtchat
A5 Choice-driven learning embodies personalized learning and this should include a modest level of one-on-one periodical engagement between teachers and students; again in validation of process. #gtchat
Great question! Difficult to answer because it depends on the student & scenario. Are there scenarios when a student can choose everything in learning? Yes! In most school systems though, the best a teacher can do is work w/in constraints of that system #gtchat#neurodiversity
I am always surprised when teachers give my kids the rubrics that they are grading to based on the curriculum and they haven't translated the rubric into language my kids can understand. It has to meet them where they are. #gtchat
When creating lists of ideas the only constraint should be time. Then evaluate/group the ideas. This gives one the chance to build creative fluency. #gtchat
A5 John Spencer @spencerideas suggests that switching to standards-based grading honors a mastery mindset, allows for mistakes and renewal – a good match for choice-driven classrooms. #gtchat#TAGT
I show my students the rubric at the beginning of a new unit, show them what gets what scores, and how to move forward. The rubric is referenced throughout learning #gtchat
A5) Assessment: Focus on big skills - critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration...info & media literacy, flexibility, project management - separate checklists for demonstrating mastery of core content #gtchat
Depends on situation, skill, but I like the idea of choice matrices. Have Ss tell you what they're focusing on, how they're going to demonstrate it, and prove it. Give them 3 - 4 things to choose from. Haven't done it. #gtchat
A5) You assess the processes they used as Ss can always get the info they need if they know how to research think, problem solve, and create. You use common criteria to assess products such as veracity of content, verification of data, or professionalism of product. #gtchat
#HackAssessment has some great ideas. Reflection is one I use a lot when we evaluate growth. Only the student knows what is going on in their brain. We have to help them express that. #gtchat
A6 Far too often, students become accustomed to being told what to do and what is expected of them. Providing choice is a risky undertaking for all stakeholders – gifted students know this and can assess the risk/benefit outcomes. #gtchat
A6) #gtchat This has been a real problem for some students. In this case to help them move forward, I use a “this or that” process to eliminate too much choice
It depends what the root of the problem with choice is. Some Ss are just overwhelmed by choice at which point we need to put on those guard rails. #gtchat
A6) Student Struggle: Choice, like all other skills, needs to be scaffolded for learners based on readiness. Limit to two choices at key points for students needing more structure - gradually increase options as they grow more comfortable. #gtchat
A6 Adults in the room can respect student voice and choice at the same time supporting those choices – ownership of learning increases engagement, critical thinking and ultimately student success. #gtchat
A6) They need practice at an early age to be able to be comfortable with taking ownership of their learning throughout their educational careers. (1/2) #gtchat
A6) Ways to help them select goals and projects to work on are through exposure to new ideas, interest inventories, questioning through personal interviews, and teacher and peer recommendations based on knowledge of the students’ interests and skills. (2/2) #gtchat
A6: Some will struggle with too much choice or worry about making a wrong choice. We can offer guidance and conference with kids to help them develop a game-plan with confidence. They will learn to trust themselves and take ownership without being micro-managed. #gtchat
Our next chat will be on Thursday, January 17th at 8E/7C/6M/5P US and Friday, 18th Januay at 2PM NZDT/Noon AEDT/1AM UK to chat about “Engaging Gifted Students with Depth & Complexity” #gtchat
