Welcome to #AoBedchat! Tonight's topic is "Growth Mindset" - We look forward to a robust conversation on the what & how of nurturing a #growthmindset in students & staff!
#AoBEdChat Thought this quote from @drrobertbrooks could help us get started: "Mindsets are the assumptions and expectations we have for ourselves and others. These attitudes guide our behavior and influence our responses to daily events."
Q1“A growth mindset is when students understand that their abilities can be developed,” Dweck. I'd add that faculty and staff abilities can be developed too. Our brain is a muscle
#AoBEdChat
Q1 - In my opinion growth mindset is the belief that you can improve, gain intelligence or learn to achieve new goals through hard work, resilience and determination. #AoBEdChat
Q1 Maria tech teacher Detroit Archdiocese of Detroit. To me a growth mindset is always ready willing and able to learn collaborate and grow with others #AoBedchat
Q2 - I believe that developing a growth mindset requires time and practice. Students must be given the opportunity to fail and learn from those failures, Failures should be considered First Attempts in Learning and not a negative thing. #AoBEdChat
Love this graphic! Student created charts in classrooms gives the students ownership of their learning. They will remember these charts because they were a piece in creating them. #AobEdChat

A2 - is a pep talk a strategy? I tell my Ss often that just because they didn't get it the first time, it doesn't mean they won't get it the next time. Encourage, encourage, encourage! #aobedchat
RSPS has made a year long study of growth mindset with our faculty and students. Using the book "The Growth Mindset Coach" as a guide, we implement a lesson each month on growth mindset...After discussing that lesson as a staff! #AoBedchat
Q2 - As the STEM teacher, I provide my students with STEM/Engineering challenges that promote critical thinking and problem solving. I encourage students to work together to solve the challenges and give them an opportunity for self evaluation. #AoBEdChat
Q2 I encourage reflection on assignments students are asked to answer questions such as how can I do this differently? What do I need to change? #AoBedchat
A2- growth mindset has to be discussed beginning on Day 1 of the school year. This is a new concept to some kids and the mindset must reinforced and developedthroughout the year. #AoBEdChat
One of the more popular lessons our teachers taught this year involved teaching students about the functions of the parts of their brains using play dough. A winner from primary through middle school! #aobedchat
#AoBEdChat@AoBEdChat@ArchbaltSchools A3. It is imp for us to model a #growthmindset in word& action to all of our stakeholders. Students&parents are watching how we respond2them in the classroom, through communication etc.We have2 adopt a new lens in which2 view&approach edu
@John_DAdamo we were just talking about student led conferences in our last intermediate team PD! Let's get the Ss take ownership of their own learning. #AoBEdChat
Q3: In all my communications with parents, I highlight the opportunities for growth for all Ss. What have we learned from this experience? I also have all reflections go home for parents to read what the Ss have said. @aobedchat#AoBedchat
A3: A team of teachers and administrators presented about our growth mindset focus for the year at the first HSA meeting of the school year. We provided parents with resources for how to change their conversations at home to reflect growth mindset. #aobedchat
Q3: Students write weekly reflection letters to their families & share successes, areas of improvement & why they are proud of themselves for their own learning. Powerful collection for home to school connection. #AoBEDChat
@John D'Adamo Digital portfolios are great for reflection and growth. Ss see the beginning, middle, and end of their story for a whole school year! #AoBedchat
Getting parents to understand that it is okay to sometimes fail is critical. Parent workshops on growth mindset and continuing communication with them through email, conferences and even quick notes will help parents understand this important concept. #AoBEdChat
A3 - This is so important, but sometimes a real challenge! Parent mindsets on school are often reflective of their own experience. Education has changed a lot in that time & that requires parent education. #Aobedchat#ditchHW#DitchBook
A3: In my weekly communications to parents I try to mention one aspect of maintaining a growth mindset.Parents often forget the importance of grit and resilience.
#AoBEdChat
A3- starts with educating parents and developing their understanding. Growth mindset can (and perhaps should) be discussed during parent conferences with teachers and administration #AoBedchat
Q3 - I LOVE that I have my Ss for 2 years in a row bc I can communicate to parents about how much growth I see over two years! it is fabulous! #aobedchat
@nancyreed123 Parent workshops are a great idea but we sometimes struggle with attendance. Using the school's website to share relevant articles and social media seems to be another way to get the word out for us. #AobEdChat

A little late to the chat. A1-I think growth mindset means that students realize that they can improve. It’slike then cheering themselves on. #AoBedchat
Student led conferences can be a great way to involve parents in their child's learning and understanding of a growth mindset. https://t.co/BqVz1jZuQi#AoBEdChat
A2: I use growth mindset in my classroom to encourage my students to not give up. I remind them that mistakes are essential in the learning process. #AoBEdchat
This is something I struggle with, parent mindset is very fixed sometimes...especially when you have grandparents taking the role of parent. #AoBedchat
A4: @MrsLSchmitt12 and @MrsMejibovsky have some great reflection tools. We also frame our classroom and school management practices in terms of making good choices. This provides an opportunity for Ss to learn from their mistakes and move on. #AoBEdChat
I remind Ss that mistakes are necessary to learn. I teach a music/drama club and our motto is" loud and proud". If you are going to say/sing/do something, be loud and proud. We will respect any mistakes and all benefit from them. #AoBedchat
Q4: At the beginning of our day in our morning meeting we discuss how something will be hard for each one of us today & that’s ok. We follow up at the end of the day with “Student Shout Outs” where we recognize the growth that we saw in others #AoBEdChat
A4: Ss first do a reflection or self-rubric without my feedback and then we compare. We have a conversation about what their concerns are and how we can address them. #AoBedchat
I think having students reflect on how they have done is very helpful. I liked John’s idea about a digital portfolio. Even little ones can do reflections using smiley faces to indicate how they did on something. Answer the prompt - how can you do better next time. #AoBedchat
A4: Last year as a teacher, I had weekly conferences with students to have them articulate their successes and areas for improvement for the week. #AoBEdChat
A4: I let the students talk first and meet them where they are. I focus on listening to have a response to their concern. This drives the growth mindset process. It also helps me remember that I am growing too. #AoBedchat
Q4 I am constantly modeling self reflection for my students. I have frequent discussions with the Ss with different situations, what worked, what didn’t, so they know this is something we do in all areas of life, not just academics. #AoBedchat
A4 - If we harnessed this approach more and had Ss take the time to articulate their areas of growth & challenge (academic as well as spiritual) we could really accomplish a lot!! #Aobedchat
@zwhiteford I think that phrase, "What could you have done differently?" is so powerful. It is without judgement and encourages metacognition! #AoBEdChat
A3: To cultivate a growth mindset culture one should start with changing the minds of parents. Parents should understand that learning is more than receiving an A in the class. #AoBEdchat
It’s important for parents to know what growth mindset means. Last school year we focused our student retreat day on mindfulness and growth mindset. We took lots of photos of our sessions and talked about what the kids did. #AoBEdChat
Q4 All year Ive wanted to incorporate a “Dismissal News” but we always seem crunched for time....a “Successes of the Day” could be a great way to get the most out of those 3-4 minutes leading up to dismissal 👍🏼 #AoBedchat
The siren song of “rigor” is pretty powerful for a lot of folks. And it’s too often measured exclusively in the number of HW minutes. #Aobedchat#ditchHW

I agree. I also allow students to redo assignments. I would rather they learn the skill and keep trying than worry about a grade. And if Ps see you working in good faith with their child, they come on board. #AoBedchat
@aweatherSAS We often use the strategy of sharing peeks and valleys with our students and faculty. Name one good thing that happened today and one experience that was challenging or that you learned from today. Sometimes they are the same thing! #AoBEdChat
Growth mindset is all about reflecting on your experiences. It helps to slow down your thinking and see what could be improved or changed. Journaling is a good way for students to be openly reflective in a low stress environment. #AoBEdChat
Q5 I try to make sure to do a quick cheer for students who are really working hard to accomplish their goals..sometimes it’s a thumbs up from the class with a “way to go” shoutout...sometimes it’s a positive note home..little celebrations make a big difference 😀👍🏼 #AoBedchat
A5: Homework should be about practicing skills nor demonstrating mastery. Mastery comes with with practice. Like the concept of incremental gains. Make challenge just enough to make Ss want to practice more. #Iteration#failforward#AoBEdChat
A4: I integrate reflection by asking the students to be honest to themselves and to ask for help when they need it. I believe that knowing when to ask for help is a crucial part of having a growth mindset. #AoBEdchat
Q5: I simply ask,”I am so proud of you. Why do you think I am?” Students know & are thrilled to articulate the reason & it’s all tied to growth mindset #AoBEdChat
Agreed. Let them write and show them you love writing as well. Too many times, teachers are so busy they forget these simple things make such a big difference to students. #AoBEdChat
@SocStuTchr Sounds like your recent math class. Pre-assessment data shared with Ss and then challenge them to do better. Results come from the hard work. #AoBEdChat
Absolutely! I equate it to potty training- we don't grade a 2 yo if they can use the potty or not. I have to make them feel safe & secure in their effort. They will keep trying & will succeed & we will celebrate. Skill mastery takes practice, effort, & encouragment. #AoBedchat

Q6 - Continued professional development for teachers to provide us with ideas, techniques and additional resources for our classroom. Time during Faculty meetings to share success and failure classroom stories to learn from each other. #AobedChat
A6: I think we need to examine how we use data to inform instruction. What do we want the students to know? How will they demonstrate they know it? How will we tailor our instruction to challenge, encourage and support Ss to take risks and #failforward. #AoBEdChat
A6: Spread the word to parents about the importance of fostering a growth mindset using a variety of platforms. If we work as a team for the benefit of our Ss, anything is possible! #Aobedchat
I make an active point to praise resiliency in my classroom. Having a personal conversation with a student that engaged in growth mindset so they know that you noticed is important. Building intrinsic motivation is key. #AoBEdChat
That concludes our monthly #AoBedchat! Hope that we can all continue to grow and serve our school communities until our next session on Mon. 3/9 at 7 PM!
