Welcome to tonight we will be discussing Adding or Using Multimedia In Your Classroom w/ & I. Pls Intro yourself.
I am Jill from NC, Director Personalized Learning and co-host.
Hi, Rachelle from pgh, Span & Fr T, course this year.
Oh and I am Dave a HS Sci teacher from MI.
yeah. I use them as building blocks
Julie Hays, elementary science teacher in KY.
Hi I'm Nathan, I teach 6th grade science.
Bill from Chlt, NC. HS + . You know it is summer because I forgot the
Hi ! I'm a Digital Learning Coordinator in Texas.
I'm Julie, an elementary science teacher in KY!
We will be using the Q & A method to move the convo.
Hi I teach 1st grade in St. Louis
Hi ! Tsisana, Boise State, ESL & EDTECH. Looking forward to the conversation with you!
Q1: How do you define multimedia in the classroom?
A1. The integration of text, graphics, sound, and/or video etc
A1: To me, multimedia is everything I use except for textbooks.
a1 multimedia is as of a definition as literacy
A1 Using a variety of tech+ non tech tools to engage + empower ss.
A1: Using images, sound, videos, etc. for teachers to deliver content or for students to represent learning.
Video, audio, text, animations and whatever
A1 Multimedia is providing instructn thru diff forms, audio, visual, books, papers, and non tech forms
Welcome. make sure you include https://t.co/vSFbCRwEyE
Hello, this is my first time on twitter. Working on an assignment for school.
A1: Today's multimedia is different from yesterday's as it is more interactive and can be/is often produced by Ss.
Multimedia in the classroom is a merging of text, graphics, animation, sound, and/or video to build learning
Welcome remember to use the so all members can follow what you say.
A1: Multimedia is our Ss reality - just like the air they breath:)
Q2: Some of you include text, books, and textbooks and some of you don't. Why?
Yes - "to build learning." Not just tech for tech's sake! https://t.co/xcMDziLPPT
Multimedia in the classroom is a merging of text, graphics, animation, sound, and/or video to build learning
A1:Multimedia is the integration of digital apps into the classroom that gives students the ability to create.
A2 I don't use textbooks, plus info is changing so fast, they aren't up to date w/ latest stats.
A1: Multimedia is visual commutation. Need to use it in the class like the real world to show Ss how to use it beyond the class
Sorry, joining late. Every S is different and some still learn the most with a textbook, some a video, and some with maker.
What a good Q! Never looked at it from this standpoint. Rethinking A1: MM is pretty much everything...
A2: We use textbooks sometimes. It's more about the content and how we can integrate into learning using a variety of resources.
A2 we use student created text which help students own their learning
Welcome remember to use the so all members can follow what you say.
It's harder for textbooks to keep up w/ the rapidly changing info & world!
Textbooks can be included as a form of digital media if they are digital and interactive in nature.
Hmm,I don't think text is necessary in multimedia, neither is animation. Just have to communicate idea.
https://t.co/2QdmiLTyV8
Q2: Some of you include text, books, and textbooks and some of you don't. Why?
A2 I use a text and wb but do a lot of supplementing with othr resources
Your information/content becomes a lot more engaging with multimedia. It’s all in how you tell the story.
Q3: Do you use non tech multimedia? I find my students still like to draw and color. Even in HS.
Rethinking A1: Multimedia is more than one way to receive info...
A2: I'm fond of books. Multimedia should be viewed as a method for communicating something bigger. How are Ss sharing knowledge?
What media do students use to create text? At what point in the learning process does this occur? https://t.co/Tbx22mCmws
A2 we use student created text which help students own their learning
Q3: Yes! My 1st grades love to use pictures to show their learning. They don't get to color/create as much as they should
A1 -The most powerful multimedia is student or teacher created, not produced by publishing company.
Yes,tough for textbooks to be current but texts are good for skills and as primary sources
Is that considered multimedia?
What media do students use? At what point in the learning process does this occur? https://t.co/Tbx22mCmws
A2 we use student created text which help students own their learning
A3
All the time. Students need to keep their hand skills up to be able to prototype
Had to check a dictionary - it's simple, really: "means of communication". Therefore.....
A3. Multimedia empowers students to create and design rather than absorb what others created.
I would think so. People work in different mediums. Does multimedia limited only to tech?
Just joining. Hope I am not too late.
Yes, non-tech images are awesome for multimedia. Kinesthetic and copy-right free!
we post in a wiki. It has video slideshows and text
Yes - but my students like the tech multimedia more.
Books are more than textbooks. Seeking ‘up to date’ texts misses the point of using print along with other media (eg fiction)
I wouldn't think so, I use magazines - that counts doesn't it?
A3: I Absolutely use non tech media; Some times my students create old school comic strips of science concepts.
I only use the textbook about 20 percent of the time.
A3 Yes, my Ss have choices, some use and others draw, either way very creative &
It's not limited to tech, but should include the "multi" part by including multiple forms of media. https://t.co/jZBjtTLF2V
I would think so. People work in different mediums. Does multimedia limited only to tech?
We also have learning construct structures with playdough, straws, etc. then take pics to include in multimedia.
That opens up a lot of creativity for students! https://t.co/GhHMedUjUS
A3 Yes, my Ss have choices, some use and others draw, either way very creative &
A2: I like when all the senses are engaged -- the tactile relationship seems essential.
Q4: Can you give specific examples of how you or your students use multimedia in your classroom /subject?
I think merging non tech media with tech multimedia is a great approach. It offers our students choices!
Do they create the "old school strips" b/c they choose not to use the tech versions, or b/c they aren't available?
I don't, because we have , but some teachers we work with use it. Do you? What grade?
We incorporate multimedia & hands-on in each lesson; draws in all learners
A4. BreakoutEdus are a great way to add multimedia along with creating Memes, PBL's and thinglinks
Explain everything videos about science,Thinglink presentations on science concepts, Student generated quizlet and Quizizz
Yes, I use it along with classroom.
I am using this year, looking forward using it. .
reading My 1st graders love and too
I also use My students enjoy the digital version.
. have you tried from for you PE classes?
I have used this same approach. Sometimes the students will want to use the old school way.
Good example here of multiple tools used in class, plus we incorporate video in our curricula https://t.co/BVo6n9p8Xt
I used Seesaw last year. It's on the "pending " app pile in my new district so I will see soon.
Actually, I like to offer my students some choice. Some like to draw it out and then upload it into a cartoon app.
thinglink and explain everything to echo others. Also Powtoon is great for demonstrating concepts.
You can always digitize the "old school" work for publication.
I use something similar along w/ ss created skill tutorials.
I'm planning a variant on brag tags in my k-5 library to encourage students to try new things.
Do anyone of you have your students use or any apps?
Digitization of print multimedia is becoming huge! https://t.co/6igWYBFILI
You can always digitize the "old school" work for publication.
Do your students have a particular app they like to use?
My Ss really enjoyed using scratch, Powtoon, and to create their ELA and SS projects
"The Ss gathered uncooked spaghetti, mini marshmallows, tape, and string, and set to work." https://t.co/GftnHfHNgI
Q5: How do you as the teacher integrate multimedia into your lessons/classroom.
I love using Scratch! It's so much more than a programming tool. Ss can do so much to demonstrate learning!
I like to find things to implement that can also be an accountability piece while I teach small groups
A5: I have students use &
A5 Tedtalks, Ss created trading fort models in minecraft, Heritage Minutes (Canada), greenscreen editing... the list goes on
I want to use Scratch more this year.
I have my students use a form of multimedia to create something to demonstrate their learning. They also share it and reflect.
honestly, I just let the kids go... they take care of it themselves. I get out of the way! Easy!
A5 blending subjects saves time -allows for Ss to demonstrate understanding by creating multimedia projects rather than tests
I often content through combos of videos & songs. Engages Ss easily. Students get to create a lot of multimedia
I tried using Tynker. Ideally I would like to use it to have my students create simulations.
What kind of simulations are you thinking?
How have you liked the Tynker lessons?
A5 I try to integrate a variety that will provide all Ss w/opps, they can learn frm each othr, create diff proj
I like to have a variety of multimedia at our disposal. The once I get a feel for ss interests/strengths I use what will work.
They will go as high as the ceiling is... so just don't build a ceiling!
Give Ss choice in what multimedia they will use to show mastery-they thrive
I have only been exploring them on my own. I think they would work great to teach the basics of programming.
Q6: Have you researched a new "multimedia app" this summer to try this coming school year?
Also allows ss to choose how to display learning.
I think it would be neat to have them create a simulation showing changing velocity, acceleration.
A6 is one I am trying. Many ways to explain learning, + want them to use blogging feature to reflect on learning.
and combined with history they could sim spear throwing, ship velocity, heck, pizza dough toss!
A6: VideoScribe same as RSA animate. Good app.
A6 is fantastic for writing, blogging, recording and more so many ways to use
We do a catapult design @ the end of our energy unit. Would be super cool to simulate w/ a program.
Absolutely love this app. https://t.co/Ar7TXtteT6
A6 is one I am trying. Many ways to explain learning, + want them to use blogging feature to reflect on learning.
A6 definitely learned from working on and revising a few to use in CR
Q7: How do you encourage students who don't feel they are creative or not good with multimedia?
I have as well, so I checked it out and thought it would work really well w/ what I like to do for my ss.
looking forward to using Quizizz with my students. It creates a competitive game based environment for kids in and out of school.
As I tell my daughter... of course you're not and it's not worth doing if it's easy. https://t.co/M26zeix57E
Q7: How do you encourage students who don't feel they are creative or not good with multimedia?
A7: Let students see how others are doing it. Let students teach each other.
A7 Important not to make them uncomfortable. My writers start with a gdoc and editing, move into embedded vids etc baby steps
love the data aspect of Quizizz.
A7 In beginning of yr. I teach Key to success when things get tough for ss. They will at least try.
A7: Scaffold until they are ready to create.
A6 is another one I am using for presentations. It's great with Ss in class
Do you have a link for quizizz? Interested to see it.
A7 Let them start low tech and photograph or such to document. Start small.
I let Ss tinker w/ multimedia, even for "nonschool" stuff. They can usually find some angle that works for them.
A7 most seem more confident with tech to create- I let them choose to use tech, posters, models, their choice
I have lots of models and examples. sometimes we create teams and make it a competition. Also like to give my students choices.
Q7: What is your takeaway from tonight?
A7: win early and often, collaboration with supportive peer(s), T encouragement re: "power of not yet"
a7 Help them find comfrtble level to start, or let them choose then see what others do, go from there,
A7 take away to be sure to tune in to this chat more often! Great discussion!
Thank you for joining . Join us again next week as we discuss Open Education Resources. Sunday @ 8:00PM EST.
A7 I love seeing other ways to engage + empower ss from great educators all over. TY
A7: give students choice.
Loved connecting with you! Thanks for the chat everyone!
Walking away with some great new resources to try out and new ways to use existing tech
Thank you for chatting tonight please keep the conversation going & follow those you met tonight.
A7: Help students think of their own solutions in a different way. The creative thinking process is different for everyone
& I are glad you participate with us each week. We can't do it without.
I do the same, students create comic strips of scenes in Romeo+Juliet
Teachers want choice; why shouldn't students have it, too?
Have a great week everyone. See you next week when discusses Open Edu Resources.
