Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
oy...the longer I'm in this business, the more cynical I get. I just love Washington politicians telling me the best way to educate my kids.

A1 The positive is ESSA is it supports states & districts in implementing personalized learning, a student-centered approach designed to help all students develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities that will prepare them for college, a career, and life. #21stedchat
Q2: How do you interpret this ESSA highlight? "Requires—for the first time—that all students in America be taught to high academic standards that will prepare them to succeed in college and careers." #21stedchat
A2 For NC : Every student will decide their own
path toward becoming productive citizens prepared to pursue higher education through
certification, two- or four-year degrees, or military service, or to immediately embark on a career
after high school. #21stedchat
A2) Familiar language, despite the phrase "for the first time" -- I think because our own state (CT) had already set this goal. But important to have the national commitment. #21stedchat
Q2: How do you interpret this ESSA highlight? "Requires—for the first time—that all students in America be taught to high academic standards that will prepare them to succeed in college and careers." #21stedchat
Q2: I’m hoping I️t does away with some leaders awful habits of abandoning students in favor of focus on others. High quality ed should be for everyone, and I️t will differ, but does not mean abandoning, in efforts to gain highest possible test scores, it’s unethical #21stedchat
A2; Teaching does not mean telling andtrue learning cannot be passive. Teaching thinking skills over memorizing content is a shift, that needs to happen. #21stedchat
I really feel like admins don't know what way to go. IMO #21stedchat You don't get recognition for achievement in skilled trades only SAT/AP scores. IMO #21stedchat
Q3: Do you see this occurring in your dist. or have a program that would count? Helps to support & grow local innovations—including evidence-based & place-based interventions developed by local leaders & educators consistent w/ r Investing in Innovation and Promise Neighborhoods
I know someone who got their cosmetology license and is 10k in debt from loans, as it was a more "prestigious" school. I think Ss pursuing this path should be educated about the different types of programs available, to avoid being taken advantage of. #21stedchat
Sadly.... #21stedchat many of my students go straight to careers or tech school and get out in 2 years & make more than college grad with huge debt. #21stedchat
I've been preaching placed based eduation!
...so much apparently that one of my Ss emailed me with a placed based proposal, lol.
IT'S WORKING!

A2. NC is working on Innovation Zones where local school district partners with the ISD for the transfer of a low-performing elementary school to be managed as an Innovative School (this is based on schools applying) #21stedchat
A3. I do not currently work in a school district or have a personal experience that relates. I am interested in seeing other people's input. #21stedchat
Q4: What would you consider a good assessment to match this goal? "Ensures that vital information is provided to educators, families, students, and communities through annual statewide assessments that measure students' progress toward those high standards." #21stedchat
I'm a fan of 2 years of college for everyone (or whatever lawmakers come up with, if they ever do). Can't beat the exposure to higher ed, but this would also guard against spending too much if it's not their ultimate path. #21stedchat
A4 For better or worse, that's what the consortiums have been trying to figure out. In NJ we have PARCC. They spend a good amount of time and resources (including testing time w/ real students) figuring out assessments and standards. #21stedchat
I think that the state should provide some guidelines like they do for senior exit projects in our state. Mastering the standard would be considered proficient. #21stedchat
or maybe ask business and colleges how what they consider hireable or admittable? ( i know these aren't dictionary words but you get the drift) #21stedchat
Q5: ESSA approves the states plans and then the states will implement those plans. (Ignoring the current admin). Do you trust your state MDE or the USDOE with this? #21stedchat
A5 If we truly believe in personalized learning, how can their be a standard framework to show mastery? if failure is positive, how can standards handle that? #21stedchat
A6 The uncertainty is hard. By the time it comes back down from federal all the way to the classroom who knows what it will look like. Would be great to have a better cheatsheet / guidance doc. #21stedchat
