ShiftinEdu is a summit for forward thinkers on November 9 and 10, 2017 in Miami. We gather thought leaders and educators from all over the world and empower them to be influencers in their own communities. The focus of the summit is to drive innovation in education through leveraging new methodologies and technologies in learning.
Hey, I'm A.J. Juliani - and I'm pumped to be here moderating for #shiftinedu chat tonight! I'm a Director of Tech & Innovation and write about all things education on my blog. Let's chat PBL tonight!
I am a third-year student at the University of Georgia currently studying the different ways to integrate technology into the classroom #shiftinedu#edit2000E
A1: the the difference between projects and PBL is that in PBL the students learn as well as demonstrate their learning whereas in projects, their learning is being demonstrated. #shiftinedu
Projects are a way for students to show what they've already learned while project-based learning teaches students new material by integrating other skills and techniques into the new material #shiftinedu#edit2000e
A1: One big one - Old school projects are assessments OF prior learning. PBL projects are assessments FOR and AS learning. The learning and doing aren't so separate in PBL. #shiftinedu
Projects are a way for students to show what they've already learned while project-based learning teaches students new material by integrating other skills and techniques into the new material #shiftinedu#edit2000e
A1: I love the Buck Institute's article on this question about PBL being the Main Course (not just the dessert) https://t.co/mVUiAcSaoE - projects are more like crafts that come at the end - while PBL is learning by doing #shiftinedu
A1 projects typically come at the end of the content, an assessment of what Ss have learned, vs PBL is focused on an essential question, more student choice, student driven, real world connection, ongoing #shiftinedu
Agreed- what comes to mind for me is a project as a 'one and done' whereas PBL is more deliberate, ongoing, and maybe further reaching? Like interdisciplinary connections and multiple grades or even school-wide participation. #shiftinedu
A2) When you challenge students to leverage knowledge and skill to improve the world around them they start to believe they are capable of doing things beyond acing a test. #ShiftinEdu
A2 when I started it 2 years ago, left the choices of topics up to the Ss, we set up our plan, also connected with other classrooms, let Ss decide the what, how, of their PBL #shiftinedu
A2: Keeping it authentic to real world problems, questions, and processes. Keeping it relevant to learner interests. Giving learners as much choice as possible. #shiftinedu
A2: Create connections to real-world issues instead of an isolated project- make it relevant. Collaborate with others and share the learning #shiftinedu
A2 It has been amazing to learn from the Ss, such diverse topics, can't compare to a traditional text or video, has been authentic, meaningful and they love it #shiftinedu
As a history teacher, I like to use mock trials to teach issues. I am dabbling into some role play like dinner parties, speed dating and my LA counterpart is doing a wax museum. #shiftinedu
A2: I made the mistake of not giving much choice or voice when I started PBL. Those are the top two ways to make the PBL experience meaningful and relevant to all involved (while hitting deep learning) #shiftinedu
As a history teacher, I like to use mock trials to teach issues. I am dabbling into some role play like dinner parties, speed dating and my LA counterpart is doing a wax museum. #shiftinedu
We are an elementary school and started passion projects in grades 4 and 5 where Ss pick their interest, wonder, or heartbreak. Not an easy feat! #shiftinEdu
A2: It's so important for students to learn to take initiative and responsibility, solve problems, and communicate ideas. #pblchat#edchat#shifinedu#shiftinedu
A2-Incorporate student interests and passions in the classroom! Also, speak in their language and engage them using tools they use such as social media #shiftinedu#shiftinedu
A2: Let students answer open-ended questions in their own, unique ways. No one student understands the material the same so we should allow them to express their thought processes in their own individual fashion. #shiftinedu#edit2000e
I’ll write it up and send it to you. Im excited to try it. I think when MS kids become part of the history and experience it it’s no longer dates to be memorized. #shiftinedu
I teach Spanish and so the standards that I have to follow are the national language standards, so it ties into learning about culture, community, :) #shiftinedu
I love this- it's not about winning the 'game' of school. It's about instilling a love of learning and empowering these kids to make an impact on the world! #shiftinedu
I wrote a lot about it last year in two blogs and in a chapter in an #edumatch book, where I got the info to start, how we started, challenges, etc #shiftinedu
Right now we have our Spanish Ts using the World Cup as their learning ground. #shiftinedu@Rdene915 Ss are so excited to learn because it is something they are excited about and is happening now.
#shiftinedu Q1 I see projects as things that are somewhat "canned" the students have very specific requirements that need to be met. On the otherhand, pbl requires more creativity, problem solving, and innovation. All of the students projects do not look the same at the end
That’s easy. The Trial of Harry Truman for crimes against humanity for making the decision of dropping the atomic bomb on Japan. Student researched with a lot of check ins and due dates. #shiftinedu
A3: My favorite PBL experience was when my students helped me design "Project: Global Inform" and they created awareness campaigns about human rights violations and injustice around the world https://t.co/D4rt8tQtVi#shiftinedu
In my Professionalism class, we were split into groups and assigned different cultures to research. From there, we were allowed to present the information to the class however we saw fit. One group did a spoof of 'Friends' and another did a Jeopardy game. #shiftinedu#edit2000e
#shiftinedu A2 see pbl as something that can accomplish multiple standards at once. My students are able to tackle research, reading, math, history, and science standards all at once
A3: Feel like I'm cheating with this answer, but it's always the most recent experience! My facilitating skills improve with each iteration so I know better what learners need, whether it's a gentle nudge, a resource, encouragement, some space, etc. #shiftinedu

#shiftinedu A3 so far my favorite pbl has been challenging my 3rd and 4th grade STEM students with "how can we prevent the devistation from natural disasters". My students were so engaged and grew to truly care about the people impacted by these disasters
A3: I'm currently doing a curiosity project with my students. Student driven question, different types of research from surveys to interviews with experts. Really loving the journey so far #shiftinedu
A3-My Grade 11 Tech students are working on a pasison project in which they must choose something they are passionate about, use it to solve a real world need or problem, and display their solution using #comtech - my blog post on it here:https://t.co/03JxCFSUSa#shiftinedu
Today an article came out in The Hechinger Report talking about the disalignment of standardized testing and pbl. “There’s no [statewide] assessment for being able to look people in the eye and speak clearly.” https://t.co/zkSbxFVIVl#ShiftinEdu#pbl@ajjuliani
#shiftinedu A4 I love the books available from A-Z science because I can print out the same book at different reading levels and remove the barrier that some students have when it comes to research
A4: Your book Empower really opened my eyes and I attended a great nErDcamp session based on curiosity and that's where my current project came from. #shiftinedu
A4: https://t.co/pOCvdzbKFk has great resources, and I've heard amazing things about their conference. Several of our faculty have attended. #shiftinedu

FIrst year teacher (and twitter chatter) here. Super excited for all these PBL resources! Also in an online PD class about PBL and making goals to incorporate soon! Don't have a lot to add yet but just wanted to say thanks for the great resources! #shiftinedu#newteachers
