My name is Matt Winters and I am 9th Grade ELA teacher in Ogden. My favorite podcast, is of course, my own @EdTrexPD Rewind with @qhenderson. However, I also listen to a variety pack of podcasts about music and news. Also I love narrative podcast. #utedchat
Hey there #utedchat. Jared from UEN here. So many podcasts - Radiowest, This American Life, The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Axe Files, Freakonomics, and more.
Remember to answer questions using A1, A2, etc. as we go forward tonight! Excited to see all those great answers, but make sure we know the questions they are answering. #UTedChat
Yes, Lore! I love it. So many great stories. I drove from Philadelphia to Gettysburg a few summers ago and that was my podcast of choice wandering through Pennsylvania backroads. #Utedchat
Leaders are readers and I love how he highlights different books and has the authors describe their WHY for writing the book. He helps me shrink my reading list to key books. 😊 #utedchat
You know who I'm chatting with on a video call? The one and only Master Enabler in the area of #PodcastPD, @MrNesi who was a featured speaker at #UCET18. #UTedChat
Hi! I’m Kami. When I’m not running for the school board, I spend my days hanging out in schools in Granite and playing with my 18 month old, who always wants to go outside. #UTedchat
I get behind sometimes but have really enjoyed every episode I have listened to. I have also found some great books as a result of his recommendations! #UTedChat

#UTedChat If you are new to #podcasts and want to get started listening to educational podcasts, here is a list of the top educational podcasts in 2017: https://t.co/sn9jaXRVkL
A1 - I have used various punk and rock podcasts to relate back to my past and present as a young punk internally, but recently have started to listen to great educational podcasts like @mrnesi and his house of edtech. It just opens so many doors for learning #utedchat
A1: So, I guess I’m behind times. I don’t listen to podcasts, but I’m willing to take suggestions. I listen to talk radio but that gets a little boring. #UTedchat
#utedchat A1: so many podcasts tell stories that take you to new places and help build empathy. This American Life, of course, but I also love This I Believe, essentially personal narratives. Both creating and listening to these narratives helps me engage in a larger community.
The first time I saw the power of podcasts to build community was with Serial. It seemed like everyone was listening to it and we all wanted to discuss. #utedchat
A1:The first podcast I followed was @serial. It got me hooked. Since then, I’ve listened to a ton. I just listened to @mikeroweworks and his podcast. Fantastic! #UTedChat
In reply to
@TeacherWinters, @serial, @mikeroweworks
A1: I've loved getting into fun of live podcast shows- like Welcome to Nightvale and How Did This Get Made? It's a whole new type of theater. #utedchat
A2 - Just like an old school radio show, if you have the right audience then it can be a large scale experience a la War of the Worlds. However, I love the intimate nature of podcast storytelling through Lore and Nightvale or the recent Marvel story podcasts. #utedchat
A2: We consume info in so many ways. As educational professionals, we need one skill to supersede all others: Listen. Listen to peers, students, families, and podcasts. #UTedChat
A2: I appreciate the podcast narrative-reporting format. It makes an informative experience personal by making it just as much about empathy and imagination as fact. And, of course, all you want to do is tell someone else the story! #utedchat
I think that is crux of podcasting: you can show empathy, tell a good story and really pull in an audience's imagination if you play your card right. One of the best things about podcasting. #utedchat
#UTedChat A2: I think podcasts have this opportunity to connect to so many different communities. I instantly feel more connected to someone who listens to the same podcasts as me. I also feel more engaged in communities connected to the podcast i.e. education podcasts
A2: For me, podcasts expose me to big thinking. I enjoy listening and learning from different perspectives both in and outside of education. It’s important to be open to learning from different fields and different approaches to thinking. #utedchat
A2: I've never thought of turning Ss onto podcasts. There's so much there and it's' less distracting than video. It'd be like activating the wikipedia wormhole. #UTedchat
A2: We consume info in so many ways. As educational professionals, we need one skill to supersede all others: Listen. Listen to peers, students, families, and podcasts. #UTedChat
It is another way to increase their ability to connect with the world. I use it to create my PLN as well, and it could be used in the same way for students. #utedchat.
A3: Podcasts are definitely educational in nature. It would be great to use clips of some of these in teaching or having kids create their own. Speaking and Listening! #UTedChat
A3 - I think when you cut down podcasts to their core, they are essentially used for informational transfer. However, a lot of them are considered to be for relaxation and entertainment but really they are still teaching us something. #utedchat
We were discussing current events on twitter this week. Wondering if there were podcasts geared for Ss on current events. Only a few websites and CNN10 that I could think of. What a great project to have it Ss run. Great writing/editing opportunity. Created an AV squad. #UTedchat
#UTedchat A3: as an ELA teacher, how aren’t podcasts educational? You can find excellent narrative podcasts, informational podcasts like Stuff You Should Know. Even podcasts that may seem less educational in content you could still explore for tone, structure, style.
Absolutely and it is fairly easy to do. I have some ideas to share later in the hour that can help teachers set up their own podcast stations in their classes. #utedchat
#utedchat just arriving - Heidi from Davis District - I love podcasts personally but haven’t used them in class yet. These podcasts look promising for this evening.
A3.2: I also enjoy listening to podcasts made by persons of color: The Nod and Code Switch, for example. It gives me perspective & insight that can be hard to come by, and also hard to ask for. #utedchat
A2 Podcasts can tell stories allowing you to escape where you are and learn how to create learning environments for your students. When we use stories we are able to connect more fully w/ students. #UTedChat#PodcastPD
Yes, we MUST develop better listening skills as educators and if we can help our students to also increase their listening skills we will change the world! #UTedChat#PodcastPD
#UTedChat Need a microphone for your podcast, here is a breakdown of some of the best - https://t.co/b0lyWJfz9V However, if you want your students to record audio, try having them use their mobile device's built-in microphone. Its free and can get a lot of decent audio.
A4 - I currently use them as projects in creative writing to explore science fiction, as a possible final project for students to get their work out to the world, and last year as a way to explore immigration narratives and have students write with empathy. #utedchat
A3: At it’s core, education is about becoming. Growing. Learning. With the ultimate objective of making the world a better place. So, podcasts that contribute to that ultimate objective are educational in nature. 😊 #utedchat
We used to do video news casts in lieu of the traditional report. I guess why not a podcast? (It is proper to put a question mark on a rhetorical question isn't it?) #utedchat
A4: It's the beauty of being an ELA teacher, you can read and write about anything. Having students go through the writing process in English class for a podcast on Science/Math/History/Health content is a perfect example of cross-curricular teaching. #utedchat
I would 100% agree with you on this. I have found it to be a slightly easier method to get the same results for a project like this. Also absolutely to your question mark! #UTedChat
#UTedchat A4: creating podcasts can go the extra-level of being cross curricular. You could assign a research topic in history/science/health and have them research in that class and format and plan in English. This is honestly something I’ve thought about.
It for sure does. I know I've heard poscasters mention how strange it is to meet fans and have them know so much about them but yet not know the fans at all. Its a mostly one-sided relationship for sure. #UTedChat#PodcastPD
So much this. I love that aspect of ELA. We can use anything we like to teach our subject matter. I use a lot of @NASA Soundcloud website to explore sound with my students - https://t.co/yv12gRZvtD#UTedChat
#UTedchat A4.2: I have had students create their own This I Believe narrative podcasts after listening to some great ones and discussing what makes a really good narrative. Honestly a VERY successful activity.
And isn't that something all educators also said about their classes? That learning is unstoppable in their rooms because the engagement levels are so high. It should be the goal of all EDUs. #UTedChat#PodcastPD
A5 - Students working together with a common goal in mind to create an original piece with interesting and engaging content for a large, possibly global audience. So many curriculum goal checked with podcasting in the classroom. #utedchat
#UTedchat A4.2: I have had students create their own This I Believe narrative podcasts after listening to some great ones and discussing what makes a really good narrative. Honestly a VERY successful activity.
A5: When building background for Diary of Anne Frank, I enjoyed playing students real news radio clips from WWII. Then they built their own brief news clips with simple sound effects & shared them. Wish I would have extended it to turn diary itself into a podcast #utedchat
Such a great lesson plan - have you checked out this site - https://t.co/sv1WJ9V3u7 Students can tour the Anne Frank house on their computers. I loved it when I taught Anne Frank. #utedchat
A5: My students could create a "You Be The Scientist" podcast detailing how to conduct a science project in chemistry or biology. I've thought about pairing tis with science fair and having live taking sessions #utedchat
A4 I’ve been reading novels I plan on using next year in Read 180 and think that listening to a podcast with the author would be relevant and interesting to students. (Specifically thinking of @JasonReynolds83 - he gives dynamic interviews, as do many others.) #utedchat
A4 What better tool to use to help students learn on their time and help prepare for class. I know I prefer to listen over reading, mostly for time and the ability to speed things up. What a great learning tool! #UTedChat#PodcastPD
A5: We always look for ideas to challenge some of our gifted kids. What about having a student just do a podcast on whatever they want, a day in the life of a 6th grader, what I wish teachers knew, etc. #utedchat
There are so many great options out there to do this. However, why not have the students formulate questions about the novel that they would like to ask the author and then see if the author can do a Skype or Google Hangout session with your class #Utedchat
A6: Logistics can be a barrier: Keeping functional headphones and microphones in supply. And finding students a quiet place to record. You can't all record in the classroom together at the same time :-( #utedchat
A5: Just finished the book #PowerofMoments & learned about a project that was a collaboration between History & English department: the trial of human nature. Would love to see a podcast approach to this trial! Interviews, defense, prosecution, witnesses, judge. #utedchat
A6 - Right now, for me, none. I have a recording station in my classroom and I can record any time. I use a TASCAM recorder and two Shure microphones with Adobe Audition to edit the audio. It is what I am comfortable with but there are a lot of options for teachers #utedchat
Very true. I often just send them out into the hall and have them record there. This also has worked for my @Flipgrid sessions with students. #utedchat
#UTedchat A6: for me, figuring out the right/user friendly recording program and recording devices. Shout out to @TeacherWinters for addressing those very concerns in this chat!
A6: Current barriers are mostly centered on a lack of equipment, but that can easily be addressed with grants - hoping my recent submissions and soon #utedchat
So I would be remiss if I did plug my fledgling podcast with @qhenderson - Edtrex Rewind. If you are interested in being a guest, let me know and I will find you a spot in the coming months. https://t.co/NbG6agVjSk#utedchat
A5 I'd love to see a weekly podcast where the students share out a summary of all the things they have learned. They can write it, record it, edit it, and then publish it. What a great review and reflection! #UTedChat#PodcastPD
A5 Or how about where every chapter you have the students create an audio review of the content so the next year students can use that in their learning? I'd love to see that one too! #UTedChat#PodcastPD
A5 Maybe even have students create a bi-weekly show where they interview different faculty members as well as some District level folks and share the story of their school/district? #UTedChat#PodcastPD
