Are you new to Twitter Chats? It's fun & easy to jump right in & share your thoughts or ask more Qs! Here's how...
Qs drop as Q1...Q2... & you answer A1...A2...
Don't forget to include #EduGladiators hashtag & follow @EduGladiators where ALL of our Qs drop from!
I know right! I do miss my days teaching in Atlanta when my students took the lead on today and shared with their classmates the importance of the day. #EduGladiators
A1: Writing can be powerful.....it can build relationships, help make connections and have an impact world wide. #edugladiators
Our Ss have things to say, they need to learn how powerful that can be.
A1 #EduGladiators I think it also helps with thought and idea organization. Very often ppl speak w/out a "filter," I think the written word helps cultivate a filter & ensures we mean what we say
A1 It is important for students to learn to express themselves, to be comfortable sharing ideas, learn to think through and use writing as the process #edugladiators
A1 Students need to know the power of writing for all communications blogging, emails, proposals, websites they real world skills needed now and in the future #EduGladiators
A1: Just the communication aspect to me. Students do not see the real world application or the impact their written work can have on those that read it. #edugladiators
A2: #edugladiators I feel that words, once written, cannot be revoked. They can be used to break people or make people, to bring people together or to tear them apart. Students need to learn that their pens are powerful tools that allow them these roles.
A1: As we want our students to be self-reflective and critical thinkers, writing provides them the opportunity to organized and structure their thoughts.
#EduGladiators
A1 Many careers the students are preparing for require mind power. What is in the mind must be placed on paper for others to understand and follow, #edugladiators
#edugladiators ...A1~have their voices heard, input in making a difference in the 🌎, convey thoughts, feelings, stance that can’t/choose not to be said orally-maybe written text has more strength/power
A1: There's a difference between quickly texting and careful, thoughtful writing, too! Our words carry both power & potential. We need to teach Ss to respect & appreciate that! #edugladiators
A1: Outlr words have so much power & when we can hear from our Ss in a passionate way, that has an even greater impact! Being a strong writer can also encourage more literacy especially for our Ss. Books are great models of written word & content. #EduGladiators
A1 Students will need to write in different forms as they go through school and in the future, need opportunities to build skills, reflect, self-assess #edugladiators
A1 It is important because writing is one of the many modes of communication that we use - expressing thoughts, questions, encouragement, agreement & disagreement is shown through writing - our Ss need this skill as it assists them with participating in the world #edugladiators
A1 @Tabschools mission statement is “We are empathetic, innovative Game Changers” in order to change the world we must perfect the word, expressing ourselves will lead ti Change, we must communicate before we can collaborate , our words can change how people feel #EduGladiators
A1) no matter what written word is still a great form of communication. It is all around us and is a form of communication that will take a long time to fade #edugladiators
Yes! Thoughtful writing requires us to slow down (though not in this chat!) and find our voice in a way that we cannot with the quick text/tweet... #EduGladiators
A1: There's a difference between quickly texting and careful, thoughtful writing, too! Our words carry both power & potential. We need to teach Ss to respect & appreciate that! #edugladiators
I have a class twitter page where they practice writing thoughtful, concise tweets. I teach how to blog as well. They LOVE the real world experience. #EduGladiators
#edugladiators it takes time & effort, but its time well-spent. Communication is not "easy" and there are plenty of adults who still haven't mastered how to communicate through writing!
A1 @Tabschools mission statement is “We are empathetic, innovative Game Changers” in order to change the world we must perfect the word, expressing ourselves will lead ti Change, we must communicate before we can collaborate , our words can change how people feel #EduGladiators
A1 The nature of online communication makes it easy to forget the power of words. Ss need to know how to be thoughtful and constructive in their writing. #EduGladiators

A1: Ss need to know that Ts value what they have to say and one way of communicating is through written word. Writing allows those Ss who don’t feel confident to speak up in front of others by still being able to share their thoughts. #EduGladiators#LoveLiteracyLearnin

A1) The power of the written word has historically been the prime method to record our history, our collective wisdom, and to debate and persuade. An inability to write well will hinder their social engagement for their entire life. #EduGladiators
Agree, Sara. One of the points that we have to be careful to emphasize to our students is when and where different forms of writing are appropriate. Connects not only to academic learning but social learning, also #edugladiators
A2 Blogging is a way for students to create their own space, to just write and feel comfortable doing so, build confidence, we use @Kidblog#edugladiators
A2 I've run into some road-blocks via blogging in terms of my ability to monitor and preview before "posting to the world" - but its a format that is ever present in their world. #edugladiators
A2: Blogging gives Ss access to an authentic audience that goes beyond their social circle/ #f2f contacts and opens them up to a world beyond that which they experience #IRL#edugladiators
A2: Blogging gives students an audience of the entire world. Opens up opportunities and allows them to freely express their ideas and thoughts. #edugladiators
looks great, great post! We have to leap, run, walk and JUMP to get where we are wanting to be. Won't just happen by circumstance, we must be intentional! Thank you for sharing your message with me. #EduGladiators

I agree. I am beyond thankful for the connections and difference my blogging has made with people when I write on more serious topics. My Ss wrote about tough topics (drugs, suicide, etc.) and they were amazing pieces to read! #EduGladiators
A1 I have a S out for a while, these words will help her feel loved and cared for, our words have power! And now I know where all our bandaids went #EduGladiators
A1: One word-Relevance Blogging is a format that kids use and in theory can inspire them to write in ways that paper and pencil can't. That said I think it is a format that needs time to grow in a students routine #EduGladiators
A1: No written word, no spoken plea can teach our youth what they should be.
Nor all the books on all the shelves, it's what the teachers are themselves. #EduGladiators

A2) I think it’s a really good way just for students to get an idea of how to organize their thoughts correctly. Organizing for a specific purpose will help them write in the future whether it’s email, business memo, etc. #edugladiators
A2 It facilitates reflection on learning and gives a window into their learning experience. It is a method that can be harnessed to give a voice to those who don’t speak up in class #EduGladiators

A2: Haven’t gotten into blogging much but I think blogging is an interesting format in which you’re expressing your thoughts & feelings abt a topic, providing a window for others to see your reflections. They’re sharing in a way that is clear for others to process #EduGladiators
A1: Profound responsibilities come with teaching. You can do so much good—or harm. It’s why I believe that next to parenting, teaching is the most important profession in the world. #EduGladiators

This is my first year implementing it. I have guidelines to follow so right now it's private to me. BUT as I move forward in coming years, I am looking forward to expanding that audience. #EduGladiators
A1: #EduGladiators The written word holds much power. Students need to know that the word has the power to break people, bring people together, educate and communicate things we can't say out loud. It's a crucial part of our language.
A2. Blogging can break down writing into manageable chunks for Ss & can be more engaging than journaling with pen/paper because it’s digital. Plus audience is immediate & limitless when they post their blog. Soooo many uses for blogs. #EduGladiators

Great point! I have seen some great Ts use the format, "what, so what and now what" which I think pushes our Ss to reflect on their learning and its relevance! #EduGladiators
I have a question - when Ss blog, how do you get them out to the wider world? There are so many blogs our there. How do you get them noticed? #EduGladiators
That's great! Something they can use at a later date in different ways! That responding to others. I created a class blog using my personal blog and people commented back to us. The Ss loved the authentic feedback! #edugladiators
A2 S’s need to learn how to think, how to reflect on their beliefs, find what their beliefs are, personal reflection has become rarer over the years and blogging brings that back, it can be kept private or shared to impact others #EduGladiators
Completely agree. So many talk about banning or disconnecting social media. I would prefer that I and my students lead in using what we have been given for good. #EduGladiators

A2~ provides ample opportunities to refine the craft of writing/communicating with others on an ongoing, somewhat minimal pressure type venue #edugladiators
It is easy to access for my Ss, since we use @Kidblog they can write any time they want, use their phones, which makes it nice and it tech fails, they can write on paper and then insert a photo later :) #edugladiators

For instance, people think it’s the end of the world if someone says something mean about them, or criticized them, or even disagrees with them. Too much sensitivity to words isn’t good either. #edugladiators
Students must think differently as a result of any lesson. It is imperative to review the importance of taking the time to reflect. https://t.co/yETrtWWgTB#edugladiators
YES! I love saying, "You're going to write a blog post about....." and they know what it is! Or they ask me, "Is this a blog?" Love that they know and use the vocabulary!!!! #EduGladiators
A2 I've been blogging for over a year and Ive seen it is both a power reflection tool as well as a great way to share important thoughts and ideas. #edugladiatorshttps://t.co/FMPJUo0pfu
I am thrilled you are all here to talk about one of my passions.....student blogging!
A sincere welcome and good morning to anyone I may have missed!
#EduGladiators
A3) They need to know their writing to a diverse audience, so understand and embracing diversity is one key skill. Also integrity, that their words have power and you can’t take others ideas w/o giving them credit #edugladiators
A3 Students need to interact in class, we need to model these skills and practices for them, share examples of blogs, discuss how to post responsibly, #edugladiators
I think it also reminds people that a big portion of communication is non-verbal. It is easy to misread the intent when there is no body or facial que's. Need to teach students to assume positive intent and then how to get clarification. #edugladiators
I started by sharing some through my personal blog. I have asked educators to interact to show my Ss the real world impact. I think that's a GREAT questions! Start small maybe? @Rdene915 is amazing at using blogging! Thoughts? #EduGladiators
James from South Texas joining late....A2 Blogging allows Ss that might not otherwise express themselves an avenue of independence...their opinions, their stories, their voice #EduGladiators
A3 The same skills that we all need to be good people: kindness, respect, open to other people’s opinions. Can’t forget using safe online practices. #edugladiators
A3: They need exposure to what’s happening in other parts of the 🌎and they need to learn what it means to be empathetic. @KyleneBeers talks about this in #DisruptingThinking asking Ss to reflect after reading on the 📖 what’s in their head, and their ♥️ #EduGladiators
Definitely start small, have students respond to prompts related to content area, a short post, then build on it, or provide diff prompts so they can choose, so many benefits of #Blogging#edugladiators
A3~ they need to have plenty of modeling, conversations, practice on such topics that carefully teach them to be respectful, empathetic, globally aware& connected digital citizens #EduGladiators
A3: Ss need to build their digital identity on their character & the way they act as a good friend, a good student, a good person. They need to ask questions and understand the importance of humility in a complex world #edugladiators
A3 I think they need to understand and be aware of the possible AUDIENCE when they are writing a blog. Since blogs have a wider audience there is the potential to upset someone #EduGladiators
A3 Openess to differing opinions, the foundational knowledge on the material and supporting opinions with well researched quality sources (avoiding Fake News) #EduGladiators

A2: #EduGladiators Blogging is a modern way of expressing one self. I think that teaching students how to use these online tools is essential because it is the future and it provides an outlets that is not paper/pencil.
A3: They need to see examples as this is probably a new format of writing. I use @SaraKAhmed book Upstanders for being respectful, seeing different perspectives, etc. #edugladiators
We often talk about how social media is permanent and can hurt college applications, job applications, etc. Do we talk as much about how a positive image from social media can also open doors? #EduGladiators
I have told them that too, I showed them how when I do a book review I cite everything and will ask authors permission to use their words. Such a powerful way to model these skills! #EduGladiators
A3) They need to know their writing to a diverse audience, so understand and embracing diversity is one key skill. Also integrity, that their words have power and you can’t take others ideas w/o giving them credit #edugladiators
A3 in order to be empathetic S’s 1st need to use their senses, they need to hear, see, feel, then they need to use their imagination to pretend they are other person. This can be a challenge to an ego centric 7 yr old, S’s must understand the permanency of words #EduGladiators
I find they take it more seriously if they see it as meaningful and purposeful. They LOVE designing their own "writing space". Ownership. #EduGladiators
A3 Student bloggers oif all ages need to be informed on the subjects they plan to address - they need to know all sides of the respective discussion, and they need to be respectful input from those sides when blogging #EduGladiators

A3 Hi all! Tracy from MA jumping into Q3: I believe one of the most important things Ss need is to see adult (& other Ss) models of kind & respectful online behavior. We are bombarded w/ so much negativity, the + needs to be pointed out! #edugladiators
A4 Set up a platform for students to use for blogging, have it be the way Ss respond to a prompt, complete an assignment, make it part of the routine, #edugladiators
A3: I think Ss need to remember that once something is said, it can’t be taken back. Writing is a powerful tool. How do we promote honesty & encourage sharing Ss voice but not at the cost of degrading, insulting, or harming others? #EduGladiators#LoveLiteracyLearning

A3: Ss Blogging is a fantastic way to teach digital citizenship. Ss can make the direct correlation of their digital footprint & the responsibility that comes along with being online. They learn to pause and think before they share online. #EduGladiators
A4: if blogging becomes a primary tool for Ss to demonstrate evidence of learning and if they are also expected to make connections between the things they learn across disciplines, we'll have a very powerful platform! #edugladiators
A3.1 That the opportunity for their voice can be used for change, not only for expression...guiding them to become good digital citizens is a must #EduGladiators
A4) as a social studies teacher I can see this from a historical perspective then their perspective. Get the students in the shoes of others in history and then critique that impact to lives today #edugladiators
I just imagine 40 years from now we will have a candidate running for president and we will be discussing their blog from when they were 7. #EduGladiators
A4: Love the idea of a private blog for the classroom...use it as a routine outlet for students to reflect across all content areas, just like you would a science notebook or reading journal. #edugladiators

We do, perhaps not as often as we need to, and a great resource to learn the power of social media for good is @JCasaTodd#socialleadia I highly recommend this book, learned so much from JCT #edugladiators

A4 We need to give kids more opportunities to do this authentically. I have a class Twitter, but my ultimate goal is for Ss to post the updates & questions. #edugladiators
A4: Love the idea of a private blog for the classroom...use it as a routine outlet for students to reflect across all content areas, just like you would a science notebook or reading journal. #edugladiators
that will help Ss to become more self-aware and able to self-assess, track their growth , we all need to make reflection a part of every day #edugladiators

A4 as a 2nd grade T I am building foundational writing skills & practices that S’s will need in blogging, I teach all subjects so our writing already flows seamlessly through all subjects, we focus on our learning not the topics or subjects #EduGladiators
Hi!👋 Nelann from Louisiana!
A4: Ss must develop creative & critical thinking. Blogging during instruction, through instruction provides real-world content, builds rapport and increases a variety of thinking & comprehensive skills.😉 Let them read & write! #edugladiators
#EduGladiators, those of you who are writing Ts may want to join me tomorrow at 11 AM EST on #MADpd for a session on Flipping Feedback. It's a technique that has improved my Ss writing incredibly!
A4) I’ve never had a class that did not have a textbook or other written reference material. Blogs are a simple and direct means to comment, opine, or critique what has been presented in the material. #EduGladiators
Yes! I have used it for teaching #digcit and as a way to build a portfolio, keep parents informed, wrote a few blogs of my own about it @Kidblog :) #edugladiators
What an important and timely concept! It's so easy for kids (and adults) to see when tech is not used well. How amazing would it be to instill this concept early in their lives! Knowledge that changes us all for the good! #EduGladiators
I created a "psudeo" Instagram template on a class @padlet for kids to post & comment on what they're learning. Hoping behaviors of class posting carry over into real world @instagram & @Snapchat#EduGladiators

John, dialing in from Mexico City. Got my fingers warmed up with #edugladiators and now I'm going to see if I can keep up with the good folks of #leadupchat
Sure thing. It’s underrated in school because it’s not easily measured like math, science, grammar, etc. But the unmeasurable skills are often the most important ones #edugladiators
A4~ ongoing practice, implementation that is part of a blended learning environment that fosters growth & retainment, application of skills taught w/skilled educators #EduGladiators
I hunted for examples and shared mine. I am pretty flexible and focus more on the content and what to include as they begin their journey. #EduGladiators
Agreed. But social media isn’t a level playing field, it’s not a vacuum. We need to be engaged on that for our Ss, because if they are unaware, they will learn the hard way. I wonder if that might do some damage. Adults have a hard enough time navigating it. #EduGladiators
Not saying we should avoid it, but we need to build competencies for it before teaching students to navigate it. Just something I’m chewing on. #EduGladiators
I think I’m chewing on - for example; what if a student has an opinion that isn’t mainstream or popular. What could posting that in online spaces do? How does a 2nd grader know they are “ready?” How does a T know they are ready? Just ?s #EduGladiators

A3) I think we have to teach students how to react if someone disagrees with their perspective. It may be the idea they are against not the person.
Sometimes it may be the person too. Knowing how to cope with these possibilities is critical. #edugladiators
Thank you @teresagross625 for moderating #edugladiators this morning. The idea of students blogging across content areas is now an idea I want to make a reality.
My college students are much more responsive to blogs than mailing (snail or email), and my readers of all ages seem more apt to read a blog post than email. #EduGladiators
If you ever do develop one, I’d be interested to engage on it. I think this is a gap as we push Ss to engage in social media spaces. This is what I came up with for a framework if that helps; https://t.co/MFoOw1YbQr#EduGladiators
