#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Welcome to #worldgeochat - the best hour of Twitter you'll have this week! Tonight we are talking about #GlobalGoals 6, 7, 13, & 15 - Happy & Healthy Planet.
Tell us who you are, what you do, & where you are!
Hi everyone! Ed, 7th grade geography teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. I'm looking for a little inspiration for the home stretch of this school year. #worldgeochat
Wahooo!!!! Sam here from MA, 7th grade world geo teacher! 1/8 of the moderation team for #worldgeochat. So happy to be here tonight and see everyone's activities based off of these 4 goals!
This will be a focus of our curriculum this year! You and your students definitely have done some great things in regards to the SDGs this year! #worldgeochat
We have 5 #worldgeochat questions about #GlobalGoals 6, 7, 13, & 15. We're calling tonight Happy & Healthy Planet! Hopefully some of the #TeachSDGs peeps will join us!
A1
This is one of those goals where raw statistics do the talking. When Ss realize that 1/7 of the planet doesnt have access to healthy water & 2/7 don't have access to a toilet. It gets them thinking!
#worldgeochat
Our test is really respond to the prompt. No fluff, not an essay but more of an extended response. I tell my Ss then MUST include โwhat is it, why/how is it, and where is itโ helps them focus on the geography of it #worldgeochat
A1 7th graders read a long walk to water in language arts. Planning on doing more with that. A good friend traveled with engineers without borders to Tanzania to help build school bathrooms in feb. Planning on connecting with him. #worldgeochat
A1: we really dive into areas around the world that have limited access to clean water. We also take a look at the worldโs major rivers (Ganges/Nile/Mississippi/Yangtze) and the impact that industry and human waste are having on them. Jeremy Wadeโs new show ๐๐ป #worldgeochat
A water trivia quiz gets them started. A hands-on activity called "Every Drop Counts!" gets them a visual of how much water on Earth is available for human use. Put those together, the need for water conservation is clear. Also, we use https://t.co/PjeN9tzQem#worldgeochat
Yes. We left when the score was tied so I could get through the crowd. Still in a boot because of the foot. I did watch the three wins on TV though. I don't usually get to do that. #worldgeochat
A1: we discuss this topic during urbanization; I like to intro Ss w/ this clip about the book that filters water - https://t.co/QWTf5wr9zC#worldgeochat
Our test is really respond to the prompt. No fluff, not an essay but more of an extended response. I tell my Ss then MUST include โwhat is it, why/how is it, and where is itโ helps them focus on the geography of it #worldgeochat
A1 These are slides on water scarcity that Chris shared that he uses to launch our walk for water. Some great videos here https://t.co/AUrNAVZUCZ#worldgeochat
A1 as a student years ago I measured our personal water usage for a day, measuring and estimating. Would be interesting to try and do this. #worldgeochat
A1: https://t.co/KnLrKZDdhM partner with @WaterforSoSudan to build project based curriculum around the question "How can clean water change the world?" Whole school communities read A Long Walk to Water & share in this transformative experience, while seeking water issues locally
It's not just Flint! @CNN10 did a piece last month about an Appalachian county where water comes out of the tap pink. We might be a "developed country" but you wouldn't always know it! #worldgeochat
A1: We explore issues of water in each region we explore...access to clean water, water-bourne disease, water scarcity, water pollution, irrigation, influence on trade, economy and society... #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a1 supporting clean water and sanitation... currently studying Sub-Sahara Africa and talking about this today. We take clean water for granted. We look at WHO numbers and CIA factbook to correlate data.
A1 make water and access to it a theme all year. By the end, the Ss will see its significance globally. Water is a resource needed by everyone no matter what. Show them the disparity in access and cleanliness #worldgeochat
A2
One of my favorite picture books that I use in class is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
It shows clean, FREE energy, AND how Africans can save their own countries without foreign pity.
#worldgeochathttps://t.co/HSajozVS8P
#worldgeochat a2 affordable clean energy. Our district does a great job reminding us to conserve energy. By reducing our own classroom usages, we find ways to talk about world impact. #itsthelittlethings
I engage my students in an adaptive creativity design challenge. First, we talk about adaptive creativity. Then, I challenge them to take something that could work more efficiently and design it. Much of what we do revolves around clean energy. #worldgeochat
Ooooohhh so cool! I got a sneak peak of a Voyager story that @le_reitz was working on. It is amazing and Voyager stories are great resources for geography teachers! #worldgeochat
A2: #worldgeochat Make your Maker Spaces matter. Make projects pop. Embed into your humanities classes. Design, build, share, and empower in creating student involvement in local SDG projects or campus facility improvements. #TeachSDGs
#worldgeochat a2 One of the best debates we had this year is what was better for the environment- solar or wind. Both look good on the surface, but both have their problems. Especially when you look at migration patterns. #LifeIsHard
Here's an example of a student relic from our Adaptive Creativity Design Challenge. This particular student adapted rooftop solar panels to be more efficient. #worldgeochat
A2: #worldgeochat Make your Maker Spaces matter. Make projects pop. Embed into your humanities classes. Design, build, share, and empower in creating student involvement in local SDG projects or campus facility improvements. #TeachSDGs
A3
This is one of the Global Goals my Ss have most loved. Even though we are a social studies class, the science that shows us how much ocean levels will rise if we do nothing is pretty powerful for Ss who could see it in their lifetime! #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a3 Climate change.... I'll be honest: Climate change has not gotten a fair shake this year on teaching and taking action. Pacing is everything and it isn't a large part of the state curriculum at this point. #ButNeitherAreMaps
A3: I donโt know that I necessarily teach this topic, but we are discussing the Dust Bowl this week, so what better time to try it? Any tips? :) #worldgeochat
One of my favorite things is a debate on the fate of the Amazon Rainforest. Students debate from the side of six different interest groups each vying for a piece of the rainforest by discussing a series of modernization proposals. #worldgeochat
A3
My Ss who are working on this goal merged with #SDG2 to plan a garden at our school. (Still waiting for final approval) but they love the benefits of growing food to donate and oxygen from a garden.
#worldgeochat
A3: #worldgeochat#TeachSDGs I highly recommend https://t.co/8mPazrcfl6 I also try to get students localized with SDG projects and then have them discover the interconnectedness of the SDGs (specifically Climate Change) as they collaborate to create impactful action.
A3 #worldgeochat Rob Stewart was a passionate film maker. This film shows that passion and even shows how children can make a difference https://t.co/heJjFGyu7g
A3: If you get Junior Scholastic, there is an awesome article about climate change this month. It highlights the issues well, without overwhelming Ss with science details. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a3 Many things will change with climate change... including the size of Thomas Jefferson's cabbages at @TJMonticello... w/ a young @LarsTheHippo in 2009:
As an end-of-year project, my kids do an Eco-Awareness Portfolio. They pick an endangered species and a country where it's located. They put together a project encompassing math, English, science, and Global Studies skills learned throughout the year. #worldgeochat#TeachSDGs
For anyone interested, here is a PDF of our Eco-Awareness Portfolio that our students do as an end-of-year project: https://t.co/9fb3DH7W6Q#worldgeochat
A4 We did the Is chocolate good for Cote d'Ivoire from @DBQProject. One of the best pieces of evidence for not using cocoa farming was the environmental impact. Species are endangered which impacts the whole ecosystem And they weren't wild about child slaves either) #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a4 Life on land... Earlier today we discussed the Sahel and other overgrazed endangered grasslands. The connectivity of the biospheres is really, really fragile.
A4: #worldgeochat Working with Jane Goodall and Roots and Shoots has been a powerful spark at our school in Beijing. Also I highly recommend looking into ecosystem restoration projects such as the work by the great John Liu https://t.co/FW13VuxX89 as a spark to local action
A4. #worldgeochat I use a lot of these images from WWF gor conversation starters and i have students create their own to raise awareness about global warming, life on land and under water
A4: comparing Roosevelt and his national parks initiatives to modern day circumstances are a great example for Ss to examine; tons of park apps out there for exploring!#worldgeochat
@Esri - am I understanding that the cartography course will be offered again in Sept? Time is not on my side to take up this opportunity but in the Fall Iโm all for it! #Cartography#worldgeochat
A4
I think this is one of those goals that works for Ss of all ages. EVERYONE is able to make life on land better. Picking up trash, planting a tree, there's something for everyone to help the world!
#worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a4 life on land... bring it local. For example- They're building thousands of houses a month in Central Texas.. where are we getting the water from? energy? school financing? Just because you have land, doesn't mean you have sustainability.
A4 Have Ss do an inquiry activity in which they investigate it from side of LDC & indigenous peoples living in areas in which rainforest destruction & desertification takes place & then make informed action plans to sustain human groups & environment #worldgeochat
Iโm hopping in waaaaay late on this but very encouraged the first thing I see is amazon land use debate and canโt recommend it enough! #worldgeochat got a whole 6 group debate planned out and ready, dm for link shares!
Yes...thanks for the idea. In Toronto Canada a candidate for premiere has offered up our Greenbelt as a way to build more affordable housing...it would be great for students to research the history of the green belt and whether we should use it to develop on #worldgeochat
A5: I would say it's difficult to measure happiness, but achieving these goals will ensure that people have access to think that will make their lives easier #worldgeochat
A5
I think ALL the global goals, and making Ss aware of them, can lead to a happier & healthier planet.
We need Ss to know about them because, as I've said often, these kids aren't the problem, they are the SOLUTION!
#worldgeochat
I think empathy and a low-level awareness of the implications of everyday choices is an authentic lesson of teaching any & all of the SDGs. #worldgeochat
I think if we teach the goals and students can become passionate enough to want to change just one we have done the Earth a great service #worldgeochat
A5: understanding the problems that create the need for these goals will help Ss create a world that makes conscious decisions & changes that will positively impact the earth #worldgeochat
I think if we teach the goals and students can become passionate enough to want to change just one we have done the Earth a great service #worldgeochat
I'm a firm believer that small actions can make large impacts. By teaching the SDGs, I'm encouraging my students to better themselves, better their worlds, develop empathy for others, and become being intelligent citizens of an interconnected community. #worldgeochat#TeachSDGs
I have always found it interesting that the Declaration of Independence says we have a right to "the pursuit of happiness". Perhaps the goal is the pursuit? #worldgeochat
A5: even if just one student connects to one goal, a positive change can take place - the more Ss know about, the better the chances for a happy & healthy world ๐#worldgeochat
A5 Teaching these thru an inquiry arc that enables Ss to do the investigation & entails taking informed action (even small, such as posters in hallway or a class upcycling project) gives Ss knowledge & analytic skills to work towards a sustainable planet #worldgeochat
#Worldgeochat a5 The global goals are manageable- both short and long term. By starting with local projects and impact, we will teach global outreach. #StartSmall#GoLocal
Thank you so much @cheffernan75 for leading this week's #worldgeochat as well as for all your work with the SDGs this year! Thanks to everyone that participated tonight! #worldgeochat
