Welcome to . Who is out there joining us tonight?
-
I'm here. I'll try to keep up. Gonna take some Vitamin C.
-
Way to be resilient, Debbie!! Good to see you!
-
-
Rob from No. California. Just walked in the door from a six mile run Hi all!
-
WHOA!! You are my hero!! You're also going to love tonight's topic!!
-
Have to give it to the Cubs & Indians for both being resilient & FINALLY making it into the World Series. Hence our topic...
-
-
Good Evening, Dr. Martinez!
-
Talking Resilience and Sports on NOW--join in!
-
Darn, my dinner will be ready in 10-15 min, but I'll chat with you until then! Elena from SF!
-
Hi Carmel! Thanks for joining in
-
We'll take you for 10-15min!
-
Tidbit: Last time Cubs made it into a World Series was 1945 Indians haven't won a World Series since 1948
-
I have been waiting since 1969 for this.
-
My students LOVE sports this year! One of the ideas for decorating our classroom for Halloween was a sports theme!
-
-
-
-
Morning to you from our night-time here.
-
Who else is out there in Twitterland joining tonight?
-
Tidbit: My folks were married November 4, 1945. Just a few weeks after the Cubs were last in the World Series.
-
Great to be here! Good Evening, Sara!
-
-
-
Any other long suffering Cubs fans?
-
Q1: What would you say is the association between resilience and sports?
-
Great to be here! Good Evening, Sue
-
-
Hi Sara! Excited to jump in for a bit!
-
Excited to have you here in once again!!!!!
-
A1 Endurance. Determination. If you are a player. If you're a fan, also endurance. Try not to give up on your team.
-
Resilience comes up quite a bit when talking about sports!
-
-
For sure! Never give up as a fan!!!
-
-
-
-
What I've learned from my students this year is that if you think you can't succeed, you won't succeed & vice-versa!
-
I know...I am a 49ers fan--should be an interesting season...
-
-
-
-
A1 I think sports are a microcosm of our environment, and an expression of living our lives. We strive to excel!
-
A1 I think players have it harder, because they have to push past disappointing their fans.
-
Yes...so much is about beliefs and mindset.
-
What is their season like? Bears are doing poorly.
-
Not so great thus far...but it's early ;)
-
A1 I also believe that fostering in is so meaningful to the development perfect example!
-
-
Moving on to Q2 but feel free to respond to any previous Qs as well.
-
-
-
A1 Sports allows for strong bonds and connections, fosters a sense of belonging
-
-
Now that's upbeat for ya.
-
-
Q2: What are some strengths/attributes of athletes and/or teams that tap into their resilience?
-
-
-
A2 Ron Santo, the Cubs 3rd baseman, struggled with diabetes, but he always put on a brave face. Later he was an announcer.
-
Give him a high-five for me!!
-
-
Love knowing the backstories of players and teams.
-
-
Teams w/resilience maintain a positive attitude, and positivity impacts how they will get along with each other.
-
Yes, it's all about the positive!
-
A1: You mean like how I keep running half marathons even though I will never win one? lol
Hi, ! Leslie in Mty, MX.
-
A2 Teamwork, having a collective goal to work towards, understanding for your teammates
-
A 1. Endurance. Pushing oneself for more
-
Hey Leslie!! You're a winner in my book for running half marathons!!!
-
A2: I wonder if it is the athletes or the nature of sport itself; regular chances at success w/ rest and training periods.
-
Oh, thanks, Sara! They keep me level. I ran my ninth one yesterday! :D
-
Hmmmmm... Good question...
-
That's nine more than me!! ;)
-
Q3 is a two-tweet question...
-
Q3a:Research shows 3 impt protective factors support resilience: Caring Relationships; High Expectations; Ops to Participate
-
Q3b:Easy to understnd Caring Rels & Ops to Participate. What are examples of having High Expectations in context of sports?
-
Congratulations, Rob! That's a great accomplishment! :)
-
A2 Ron Santo was never given the honor of being voted into Hall of Fame while he was alive. He deserved recognition earlier.
-
Great question! Building success and training that is designed to move toward a goal...combo!

The fact that is getting people to exercise when myriad exercise programs have failed. Same idea.

-
-
Q3b:Easy to understnd Caring Rels & Ops to Participate. What are examples of having High Expectations in context of sports?
-
A4 Not sure how high expectations fit in. Seems to me that almost is counter indicated.
-
-
Reminder...don't forget to always include in your answers for all to see.
-
Think "high expectations" in terms of process rather than performance...
-
A3 Caring relationships almost always help. Encouragement. Enthusiasm. I could have used that.
-
A3b) Expectations are multiple; coach, captain, teammates, self. High is that you put forth effort towards a shared goal.
-
Thanks. That makes more sense.
-
Q3 hubby coaches & never focuses on how the team did (esp w/ losses)- always asks players if they played their personal best
-
...like stick-to-it-tiveness
-
-
A3ab: Having high expectations, from self/or others provides the brain, a target to focus on, and thus, a goal to reach.
-
One of the most impt. questions to ask!
-
A3 If I would have received encouragement, perhaps I'd be a published author now. Not sports but still about performance.
-
You are published every week here at You go, Girl!!!
-
True but easier to focus on teams issues/mistakes rather than take ownership of own - building life skills!
-
It's impt. to see "high expectations" in context of process -not performance or winning trophies or getting the A
-
Process instead of performance...like focusing on the EFFORT of students in math as opposed to just right/wrong answers
-
Unfortunately some find it easier to focus and perseverate on the negative. We need to change this.
-
we used the created from , and aligned it with and - A new world would appear.
-
I know but I want to publish a book of poetry among other things.
-
-
That's the thing about sports; they never end, there's always another season to try again!
-
-
I was thinking about how high expectations can feel like PRESSURE in some cases. High expectations + high support
-
YES!!! Same with the arts and transferring that feeling of passion as well into other academic areas
-
A3b Teachers who expect all students to jog an entire mile or coaches who require the whole team to participate!
-
Just write, then write, then write, then write...You can do it Deb! https://t.co/hOhpGoXspH
-
-
I know but I want to publish a book of poetry among other things.
-
...and again...and again...and again...kinda like trying to lose those last 5 pounds..;)
-
That's why high expectations can sometimes get tricky...
-
Thanks, Rob. I think I have enough for a book of poetry. It's a matter of getting it organized.
-
We are all here supporting you and rooting you on, Deb!!!
-
Agreed.Always room for improvement but needs to be couched in affirmations. 4 positive comments for each neg
-
Yup! That's the ratio--at least 4!

No direct comments. Recommended reading: Reach For The Summit by Pat Summit and Sacred Hoops by Phil Jackson

Here's a good question-Q4-- that people could offer some insight into...
-
Thank you. Why I like So much nurturance.
-
Q4: How can coaches/parents respond to kids who get out of control b/c of their performance not meeting their expectations?

-
Q4: How can coaches/parents respond to kids who get out of control b/c of their performance not meeting their expectations?
-
...or better yet see Q5 in a minute...
-
A4 Does depend on the age of child, yet, with positive sometimes you need to identify a more strategic goal.
-
Q5: What advice would you have for coaches and parents who get out of control b/c of the child's performance?
-
A4 first need to assess if expectations are set at an appropriate level - and whose expectations are we meeting?
-
Yes! high expectations, but also, patience, kindness, respect & flexibility.
-
-
A4(+) Meaning, it's not about getting an A on each test, it's about spending time (not just 100 homework problems)
-
A4 benchmark expectations against previous skill level should be a guide
-
-
Yes, progress; not performance

A4 first need to assess if expectations are set at an appropriate level - and whose expectations are we meeting?
-
A4: This is dependent upon the child and should be tailored to their individual needs. Calm, steady, rational, patient.
-
Coaches and parents need to model appropriate behavior and attitudes for kids.

-
-
Q5: What advice would you have for coaches and parents who get out of control b/c of the child's performance?
-
often coaches are the model for parents as well!
-
A5: Oh, that's tough. In my experience, listening to an intense parent/coach first before offering 'advice' usually helps.
-
A5: Please calm down; they are x-years-old and fun should be a big part of why we are all here!
-
I have actually seen parents thrown out of bleachers for inappropriate behavior!
-
A5. Remember you didn't always have it together nor did U get it when someone wanted U 2 get it. All in timing
-
-
A5 For coaches we have and for parents we need to provide to support their understanding
-
Well said!!!! (Hi Timothy! Thanks for joining in tonight!)
-
-
Now I just need to get brave enough to say it! I've thought about it a few times.
-
Haven't we all!! Yes, we need to build our own resilience in sticking up for what we believe.
-
A5 being upfront with parent expectations at the beginning of the season can help as well
-
I am dealing with this issue right now with my 12th grade son so it struck a cord seeing the ?? š
-
Q6: What do you want to say/add abt the topic, Resilience and Sports that might be able to help others?
-
Yes, most of us as parents have been there too.
-
"Positive Coaching Alliance" provides coaches, and parents with info on athlete development.

-
Q6: What do you want to say/add abt the topic, Resilience and Sports that might be able to help others?
-
Want true resilience: Rick and Dick Hoyt story - no financial motivation just love of basic humanity.
-
A6. I believe there are untapped possibilities within the classroom & other ventures if we view them as a sport
-
Hey Scott!! Good to see you! And did you bring your friends, Bullwinkle and Rocky?
-
-
A6 We must use development techniques in class, and on the field, to support the of our students.
-
-
I've found when a coach is frustrated, and wants to give up on a kid, if I let them vent, then they change their own mind.
-
A6. Develop the perspective of Ss to see their academic accomplishments through an athletic lens of training/conditioning
-
BTW--Who are you following and rooting for out there?? Baseball or otherwise...
-
-
very true! Hard for some to do this mind shift!
-
A6: The "soccer mom" is probably one of the most resilient people you will ever meet. Get to know her.
-
-
A6. Redefine & expand the "Student Athlete" we emphasize the athlete & not the student & we limit what is athletic
-
Yes, the "soccer mom" is so resilient in SO MANY ways!!! (and the moms and dads who support other sports)
-
-
A2: find the zone. Tune it all out and focus on the ball.
-
A6: If u aren't a sports enthusiast, listen to your Ss who are b/c they can teach u how to foster that passion in others!
-
Find the zone is right--can you say, "FLOW" ... Hi Jenny!!

-
We tease apart the allure of sports & work 2 infuse it into how we deliver & celebrate academics
-
absolutely - must keep trying until Ss/athletes believe it themselves
-
-
Q7: What are you going to do tomorrow as a result of tonight?
-
Sorry I missed it... Working insane hours for the past couple of weeks. I think I "zoned" out. LOL
-
-
The hustle in music can be viewed as a sport so this can help bridge the gap for Ss
-
Love the way you think!!!
-
Thanks great even though I was low energy.
-
Thank you all for "playing" in the game of tonight. You are ALL winners in my book!
-
No they are in Europe training for the slow turtle racing season that starts next month. Winging it solo.
