Tonight we are going to talk about 21st century skills supported by #flipclass. We will use Q1/A1 format to keep the conversation going. Please include #flipclass in your tweets so everyone can see your contribution to the chat.
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:11 PM EST
Hey #flipclass. Justin, hs math, WI, 3rd year flipping. The old train set we used to put around the tree at my grandparent house.
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:12 PM EST
    Welcome everyone! Let's get started. Here's Q1 #flipclass
  • wjmarkert Dec 4 @ 8:12 PM EST
Hi #flipclass, Wendy from Houston, TX. 6th year flipping HS math. Pyramids.
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1: I think in my class I would say communication, collaboration & critical thinking #flipclass
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1 Collaboration & critical thinking are key for AP chem #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1: so many of those are important! I think my #flipclass allows for more time for Ss to be critically thinking
  • AuenChemist Dec 4 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1: I've been pretty good about doing the critical thinking and working on the creativity piece this year. Other 2 still need some work. I think we need to help Ss see problems from another's perspective too. #flipclass
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:15 PM EST
I would add a bit of metacognition - thinking about how they are learning and how to improve their learning #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:17 PM EST
Are you talking about empathy or other solution paths, or something else? intrigued...#flipclass
    In reply to @AuenChemist
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:17 PM EST
YES! I love helping Ss develop these skills - any suggestions on how you implement it with your Ss?? #flipclass
    In reply to @DenaKLeggett, @lanier_katiesue
  • wjmarkert Dec 4 @ 8:17 PM EST
A1: I think all of them are important. I unfortunately, cut corners a bit with creativity. Need to improve that. #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:18 PM EST
A1: All 3 are important...being able to communicate ideas/understanding of material, collaboration builds understanding for all involved, critical thinking helps take the “basic content” and really dig in deeper #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:18 PM EST
That is a good one, but I found it tough to teach. Some Ss would take the time, others not. #flipclass
    In reply to @DenaKLeggett
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:18 PM EST
This year I asked my AP & IB students to write down their goal score and strategies they will employ to reach it. They will be re-evaluation in January to see if they are on track. #flipclass
    In reply to @lauravoges, @lanier_katiesue
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:19 PM EST
How about personal GEBI (good even better if) evaluations? #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:19 PM EST
A1 I'm going to say all of them are important, but I really enjoy Ss creativity and try to provide time to allow for that in class #flipclass
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:21 PM EST
can you give me more info about this GEBI eval?? (I've never heard of it, but it sounds awesome!) #flipclass
    In reply to @DenaKLeggett, @lanier_katiesue
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:21 PM EST
Time for Q2, (don't let that stop any Q1 chatting). #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:22 PM EST
Very important skills! I want to do a better job of helping student set their learning goals and then track their progress. #flipclass
    In reply to @lauravoges, @DenaKLeggett, @lanier_katiesue
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:22 PM EST
How do you do that in your physics classes? This is one I struggle with #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • collsphysistry Dec 4 @ 8:22 PM EST
A1. Empathy is one of the most important skills to have. Flipclass or not! #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:23 PM EST
Rubrics that provide guidance and expectations, but not limitations have helped with creativity in physics. Allowing solutions to be presented in a variety of ways, verbal, video, picture etc. also #flipclass
    In reply to @Ldg32
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:23 PM EST
I learned this from friend who is in business. Evaluate what is working and going well, and then propose how to make it better. I do GEBI surveys with my kids almost every year. Can't just complain or criticize - must propose solution #flipclass
    In reply to @lauravoges, @lanier_katiesue
  • AuenChemist Dec 4 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2: It allows me to let Ss test when, where and in the way that is best for them to show their knowledge. I have also been trying to get them to use #breakoutedu boxes and make video examples this year more. #flipclass
  • collsphysistry Dec 4 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2. I design my lessons around my flip almost exclusively. What creativity do I want to see them do in the group space? #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2: I guess I do this by being able to do projects and working at their own pace has created some creativity #flipclass
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:24 PM EST
I love that!!! How often do they complete one? With big assignments? After assessments? #flipclass
    In reply to @DenaKLeggett, @lanier_katiesue
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:25 PM EST
These are all important for a quality class/learning experience. #flipclass helped me include more of them in the actual class time, not just hope it was happening after lecture.
    In reply to @collsphysistry
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:25 PM EST
I do most of those things, too, but never really thought about them as a creative outlet. I'm having Ss do their lab analysis on video through @Flipgrid this year, and it has been helpful to hear their thoughts #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue, @Flipgrid
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:26 PM EST
completely flipped. Challenged with the creativity part - especially ap/ib. love the project we designed when you were here. Give groups choice in how to explore the contributions of the dead guys of atomic structure. #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:26 PM EST
A2: the #flipclass gives us more time to do the creative thinking that allows them to dig deeper!
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:26 PM EST
OOH! breakout chemistry! That is cool. #flipclass
    In reply to @AuenChemist
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:27 PM EST
How often do you make your own chem #BreakoutEDU games? I'd love to swap ideas sometime #flipclass
    In reply to @AuenChemist
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:27 PM EST
Leaving the Ss space to make things their own allows creativity. They might take the opportunity, they may just get the work done. Either way they have chosen. #flipclass
    In reply to @Ldg32, @Flipgrid
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:28 PM EST
I can't wait to see the results. I hope you tweet some pictures and share. :) #flipclass
    In reply to @DenaKLeggett
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:28 PM EST
I don't know! I have only used as end of year. Just thought about including it throughout year as a way for the to self-assess. #flipclass
    In reply to @lauravoges, @lanier_katiesue
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:29 PM EST
Agreed, just never looked at it that way #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue, @Flipgrid
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:29 PM EST
you never hesitate to put me on the spot 😂#flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:30 PM EST
I have started something new this term. With the video the students fill out a multiple choice formative assessment and have to score 80% on all formatives for a chapter before they can take the chapter test. I'm curious to see results of this #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:30 PM EST
A2: Eventually (hopefully sooner rather than later) I’d like to come up with different assessment options... allowing them to choose how to demonstrate understanding instead of always just a test #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:31 PM EST
On to the next skill - Q3 #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:32 PM EST
I’d like to incorporate #masterylearning with a system similar to this within the next couple years #flipclass
    In reply to @Ldg32
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:32 PM EST
Mine collaborate everyday. I need to be more intentional about teaming. Did some peer instruction today. Glad to get that back in curriculum. #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: this is huge in my class. Almost everything we do has some level of group dynamic. From working together to solve problems in the book to having class discussions to doing lab work. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:32 PM EST
That's a great challenge to have. @chemicalsams and @jonbergmann used alternative assessments successfully. I found success to be very course dependent. #flipclass (easier in some than others)
    In reply to @JJBackeberg, @chemicalsams, @jonbergmann
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:33 PM EST
A3: I try to incorporate collaboration as much as possible into my #flipclass especially showing students how beneficial it can be so they learn the importance of working together to learn
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:33 PM EST
    That's where I'm heading to, hopefully. #flipclass
    In reply to @JJBackeberg
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:34 PM EST
Q3 Collaboration was huge in ELL physics, PBL physics. Hoping to use it in team based college physics in spring. Groups working together to solve challenges = deeper learning, great conversations. #flipclass
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:35 PM EST
Have wanted to do mastery learning again for years. Did it a couple of decades ago when I student taught, but flipped has brought it back with much more learning potential. #flipclass
    In reply to @JJBackeberg, @Ldg32
  • wjmarkert Dec 4 @ 8:35 PM EST
A3:Collaboration is key in my #flipclass Students share ideas/opinions, support each other's learning, and work together to solve problems.
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:35 PM EST
I’d also like to incorporate Standards Based Grading, so I’d probably do something like “must get at least a 3 out of 4 on the standard to move on/take test” #flipclass
    In reply to @Ldg32
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:36 PM EST
Curious as how this looks in a math class. Do you have a specific method you follow? #flipclass
    In reply to @wjmarkert
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:36 PM EST
Are you teaching team based college physics in a HS setting? I would be curious to see how a class like that works #FlipClass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:37 PM EST
Mastery learning just makes so much sense to me...why would you move on to something new unless you’re ready for it? Truly learn the material before moving on... #flipclass
    In reply to @DenaKLeggett, @Ldg32
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:38 PM EST
Actually, it's going to be 1st yr college students in the spring. Could translate to any level, I believe. I'll share once I figure things out. :) #flipclass
    In reply to @Ldg32
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:38 PM EST
That's kind of what I'm doing. We are starting SBG, and this was my way of blending SBG and #flipclass. I thought 80% mastery of a standard on a formative assessment should be enough. Not sure if I'm right, but we'll see
    In reply to @JJBackeberg
  • wjmarkert Dec 4 @ 8:38 PM EST
Not really a specific method, but we are an AVID school, so we all incorporate WICOR strategies daily. #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:39 PM EST
    Here's Q4 #flipclass
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:39 PM EST
totally agree for my Honors, but the AP & IB calendars are so very challenging. I typically teacher 3-4 preps and am in new school. I need to think about it for next year. #flipclass
    In reply to @JJBackeberg, @Ldg32
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:40 PM EST
Do you have a set of standards you use? Or just pick through the content for the “main ideas”? #flipclass
    In reply to @Ldg32
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:40 PM EST
Calculus based E&M is what it is. Just hoping to make it engaging. I really don't think lecturing for 90 minutes is my style anymore. #flipclass
    In reply to @Ldg32
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:41 PM EST
A4: I think giving them challenges they can't just find the answers on google. Also, make them really explain their thinking and learning #flipclass
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4: I think it starts with evaluating the in-class activities. For example, what are the "verbs" in the student objectives for the activity or problem they are solving? #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:43 PM EST
The standards are a combination of me picking, our state standards, and some of the NGSS. I'm hoping to refine them after this year to make it clearer #flipclass
    In reply to @JJBackeberg
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:43 PM EST
A4: for me it is taking time to ask students to explain their thinking and learning and then giving them a chance to apply it #flipclass
  • AuenChemist Dec 4 @ 8:43 PM EST
A4: Critical Thinking can be done a few ways but I like the puzzles in #breakoutedu. I also sometimes make them solve things more than one way. OR give them pre-solved problems done wrong and they have to explain WHY and WHERE they are wrong. #flipclass
  • bakerhhhs Dec 4 @ 8:44 PM EST
A4: Joining #flipclass late. Chris, Philly region, #anatomy #physiology instructor. Case studies involving assessment, patient questioning, connecting the dots, developing differential diagnoses & clinical impressions & treatment plans.
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:44 PM EST
I need to sit down and start looking through my content and CCSS and just build a list of the standards I’m going to use. Hopefully one of these days I can get that started #flipclass
    In reply to @Ldg32
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:46 PM EST
A4 Explaining processes and solutions does force the Ss to show the thinking behind the answer and prove they didn't just wander into the solution (or borrow it) #flipclass
  • wjmarkert Dec 4 @ 8:46 PM EST
A4: Not the only way, but one way students use CT skills is through their Cornell notes. Summaries require them to synthesize ideas, and the questions they write can be high level. #flipclass
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:46 PM EST
I really like the “find/fix/explain the error” type of problems...I need to use these way more #flipclass
    In reply to @AuenChemist
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:47 PM EST
AP and IB require a lot of justify and explain. Peer Instruction forces kids to defend their answers. CER (claim, evidence, and reasoning) promotes more critical thinking as well. #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:47 PM EST
Hi there Chris! Glad you made it tonight. #flipclass
    In reply to @bakerhhhs
  • bakerhhhs Dec 4 @ 8:48 PM EST
Thanks Katie. Me too. Totally forgot then saw #flipclass in feed.
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:49 PM EST
I did this with simple chemical equation balancing. It was more challenging for kiddos than I expected. #flipclass
    In reply to @JJBackeberg, @AuenChemist
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:49 PM EST
I love Cornell Notes!! One of my favorite #AVID strategies #flipclass

  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:50 PM EST
Here's Q5 (keep up the convo) Communication is the last skill on the original list. How do your #flipclass lessons help students build their communication skills?
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:51 PM EST
A5: improving communication in how to articulate their questions and also when they explain how to answer a question to their peers. #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • samcarney Dec 4 @ 8:52 PM EST
Hi Katie! Do you work with Sara Holloway? She's my friend! #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • bakerhhhs Dec 4 @ 8:52 PM EST
A4: I think this banner a student made for me reflects my attitude regarding critical thinking vs. rote memorization. I try to impart this as much as possible: https://t.co/gsabUrv6NQ #flipclass
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:52 PM EST
A5: Multiple ways. At the end of the video assessment there is always a place to post questions, also every class has some kind of conversation piece, usually small group and large group #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:52 PM EST
We shared a classroom a couple years ago. Now I'm doing other things. She's a wonderful physics teacher. #flipclass
    In reply to @samcarney
  • Ldg32 Dec 4 @ 8:54 PM EST
A5.2: Also, I like to change the way students communicate on the work they turn in. Written response, pictures, videos, etc #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:54 PM EST
Q5 I finally got Ss blogging in PBL physics class. It was a wonderful window into their learning and helped them take things more seriously #flipclass
  • lauravoges Dec 4 @ 8:54 PM EST
Yup! Just like any skill they need to learn how to do it - and then practice as much as possible! Its actually one of my first #flipclass videos they watch... https://t.co/E3w2L2f4dy
    In reply to @JJBackeberg, @wjmarkert
  • JJBackeberg Dec 4 @ 8:56 PM EST
I’ll have to check it out! #flipclass

  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:56 PM EST
Time for the Exit ticket! What will you take away from tonight's #flipclass chat?
  • lanier_katiesue Dec 4 @ 8:58 PM EST
Since you're AP chem, I'll introduce @DenaKLeggett who does AP chem in TN now after starting #flipclass at Allen.
    In reply to @samcarney, @DenaKLeggett
  • DenaKLeggett Dec 4 @ 8:58 PM EST
ET: I think better structured groups & collaborative activities and more Peer Instruction. #flipclass
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • samcarney Dec 4 @ 8:59 PM EST
I follow a lot of what @DenaKLeggett does via Twitter! Great inspiration for #flipclass AP Chem!
