Tonight we are going to talk about 21st century skills supported by #flipclass. We will use Q1/A1 format to keep the conversation going. Please include #flipclass in your tweets so everyone can see your contribution to the chat.
A1: I've been pretty good about doing the critical thinking and working on the creativity piece this year. Other 2 still need some work. I think we need to help Ss see problems from another's perspective too. #flipclass
A1: All 3 are important...being able to communicate ideas/understanding of material, collaboration builds understanding for all involved, critical thinking helps take the “basic content” and really dig in deeper #flipclass
This year I asked my AP & IB students to write down their goal score and strategies they will employ to reach it. They will be re-evaluation in January to see if they are on track. #flipclass
Rubrics that provide guidance and expectations, but not limitations have helped with creativity in physics. Allowing solutions to be presented in a variety of ways, verbal, video, picture etc. also #flipclass
I learned this from friend who is in business. Evaluate what is working and going well, and then propose how to make it better. I do GEBI surveys with my kids almost every year. Can't just complain or criticize - must propose solution #flipclass
A2: It allows me to let Ss test when, where and in the way that is best for them to show their knowledge. I have also been trying to get them to use #breakoutedu boxes and make video examples this year more. #flipclass
These are all important for a quality class/learning experience. #flipclass helped me include more of them in the actual class time, not just hope it was happening after lecture.
I do most of those things, too, but never really thought about them as a creative outlet. I'm having Ss do their lab analysis on video through @Flipgrid this year, and it has been helpful to hear their thoughts #flipclass
completely flipped. Challenged with the creativity part - especially ap/ib. love the project we designed when you were here. Give groups choice in how to explore the contributions of the dead guys of atomic structure. #flipclass
Leaving the Ss space to make things their own allows creativity. They might take the opportunity, they may just get the work done. Either way they have chosen. #flipclass
I have started something new this term. With the video the students fill out a multiple choice formative assessment and have to score 80% on all formatives for a chapter before they can take the chapter test. I'm curious to see results of this #flipclass
A2: Eventually (hopefully sooner rather than later) I’d like to come up with different assessment options... allowing them to choose how to demonstrate understanding instead of always just a test #flipclass
Mine collaborate everyday. I need to be more intentional about teaming. Did some peer instruction today. Glad to get that back in curriculum. #flipclass
A3: this is huge in my class. Almost everything we do has some level of group dynamic. From working together to solve problems in the book to having class discussions to doing lab work. #flipclass
That's a great challenge to have. @chemicalsams and @jonbergmann used alternative assessments successfully. I found success to be very course dependent. #flipclass (easier in some than others)
In reply to
@JJBackeberg, @chemicalsams, @jonbergmann
A3: I try to incorporate collaboration as much as possible into my #flipclass especially showing students how beneficial it can be so they learn the importance of working together to learn
Q3 Collaboration was huge in ELL physics, PBL physics. Hoping to use it in team based college physics in spring. Groups working together to solve challenges = deeper learning, great conversations. #flipclass
Have wanted to do mastery learning again for years. Did it a couple of decades ago when I student taught, but flipped has brought it back with much more learning potential. #flipclass
I’d also like to incorporate Standards Based Grading, so I’d probably do something like “must get at least a 3 out of 4 on the standard to move on/take test” #flipclass
Mastery learning just makes so much sense to me...why would you move on to something new unless you’re ready for it? Truly learn the material before moving on... #flipclass
Actually, it's going to be 1st yr college students in the spring. Could translate to any level, I believe. I'll share once I figure things out. :) #flipclass
That's kind of what I'm doing. We are starting SBG, and this was my way of blending SBG and #flipclass. I thought 80% mastery of a standard on a formative assessment should be enough. Not sure if I'm right, but we'll see
totally agree for my Honors, but the AP & IB calendars are so very challenging. I typically teacher 3-4 preps and am in new school. I need to think about it for next year. #flipclass
A4: I think it starts with evaluating the in-class activities. For example, what are the "verbs" in the student objectives for the activity or problem they are solving? #flipclass
The standards are a combination of me picking, our state standards, and some of the NGSS. I'm hoping to refine them after this year to make it clearer #flipclass
A4: Critical Thinking can be done a few ways but I like the puzzles in #breakoutedu. I also sometimes make them solve things more than one way. OR give them pre-solved problems done wrong and they have to explain WHY and WHERE they are wrong. #flipclass
I need to sit down and start looking through my content and CCSS and just build a list of the standards I’m going to use. Hopefully one of these days I can get that started #flipclass
A4 Explaining processes and solutions does force the Ss to show the thinking behind the answer and prove they didn't just wander into the solution (or borrow it) #flipclass
A4: Not the only way, but one way students use CT skills is through their Cornell notes. Summaries require them to synthesize ideas, and the questions they write can be high level. #flipclass
AP and IB require a lot of justify and explain. Peer Instruction forces kids to defend their answers. CER (claim, evidence, and reasoning) promotes more critical thinking as well. #flipclass
Here's Q5 (keep up the convo) Communication is the last skill on the original list. How do your #flipclass lessons help students build their communication skills?
A4: I think this banner a student made for me reflects my attitude regarding critical thinking vs. rote memorization. I try to impart this as much as possible: https://t.co/gsabUrv6NQ#flipclass
A5: Multiple ways. At the end of the video assessment there is always a place to post questions, also every class has some kind of conversation piece, usually small group and large group #flipclass
Yup! Just like any skill they need to learn how to do it - and then practice as much as possible! Its actually one of my first #flipclass videos they watch... https://t.co/E3w2L2f4dy
