#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
Good evening! Welcome to #kinderchat! Liane here from rainy Abbotsford, BC. please introduce yourself and, since I am at home ill, what is your advice for getting over a bad cold??
Hi! Luisa from Omaha! Kdg Dual Language Teacher! Best advice is to drink lots of fluids—my physician husband swears by the netti pot as well to combat colds! #Kinderchat
Hi #Kinderchat friends!👋🏼 I’m Kristen Whiddon and it’s my first time here! I’m a 1st grade teacher from Texas, relocating to Cali and I’ll be teaching K in January! Life is crazy. So, here I am 😂🤷🏼♀️
Hi Christine! I wish I could medication, but it interacts with other prescriptions, so I am out of luck! I used to take Tylenol Cold and I miss it. #kinderchat
Is it bad to say I’m “parented” out? Parent Teacher interviews seem to be going on forever for me, lol! I love my class, I love their families, but I am tired! #kinderchat
Hi Amy! I was doing the opposite of that this weekend! My temp got up to 103, so it was cold baths and cold clothes. Thankful that broke! Now it's a lot of tea and Netflix! #kinderchat
I live in the country, work in the suburbs. But our coyotes are everywhere. They don’t really bother anyone, but there was that case in Cape Breton, NS that makes me a bit uncomfortable…#agirlwentrunningandwasattackedbycoyotes#kinderchat
So, tonight I thought we could talk about outdoor experiential learning in an urban "concrete" jungle. @CarrieMarshall1#kinderchat (PS I am a horrible slow typist. I should have taken typing in HS)
They certainly are trying. It’s not easy though. But last summer it had a very different “feel” than it has in the past. A bit more hopeful #kinderchat
Something I'm gonna do a lot for sure. I think going outdoors is something that is overlooked as (at least when I were a student in school) I felt like they wanted us to stay inside the classroom #KinderChat
My new school has outdoor access to the classrooms, so I imagine we’ll be outside a lot! I’m pretty heartbroken to be leaving my “4 recesses a day” district and heading to a one-a-day 😩 #Kinderchat
I can think of only three times of going outside in HS. Twice in science to do experiments that we really shouldn't had been doing 😂😭😂😭😂😭 and once in LA3 to read. Maybe three or four times through elementary/MS #Kinderchat
We take field trips to “farm/harvest time. Also the kinders went to a wonderful park with lake and ducks and open grass spaces to run. Other then recess not too much in the neighborhood that’s green. #kinderchat
When I taught in the city, we would go for walks in the neighbourhood, plan field trips to our urban forests, and go to our city zoo, which is on an island in the middle of the city! #kinderchat
A2: we sometimes take hula-hoops out, lay them on the ground, and look at the eco-systems we can find in that small space. it’s amazing what we can find when we focus #kinderchat
We often go to our playground and look for signs that small creatures have been there. Spiderwebs, wasp nests (which then get reported), lady bugs, pill bugs. We usually take out magnifiers in our wagon. #kinderchat
Me too. I use to have a little creature container too for the Ss to put them in for the time being while we were outside. It had a magnified lid. #kinderchat
We also do studies on shadows by drawing our shadows with sidewalk chalk, and seeing how they move during the day. (usually in the spring when there is less rain) #kinderchat
And it is amazing to see the plant life that grows in the cracks of cement. The kids will almost always find the plants and want to figure out how they grew there. #kinderchat
Mostly found materials, will also bring out skipping ropes, hoops, etc sometimes. It usually ends up being mostly sticks and various parts of the compound. (balance on the border) #kinderchat
Read a story to my K's today.📖 Halfway through the story it stated that the main character "would not give up." One of my students chimed in: "just like us! We don't give up either!"
#allthefeels#TMGenius#kinderchat
See, my little soapbox is these concrete jungles. I want my children to feel like that is THEIR space, so that as they grow, they will continue to respect it and value it. Maybe they won't be the ones coming in to vandalize it in the future. #kinderchat
Noticed the #kinderchat is about nature tonight! This is a must watch video - nature is everywhere! We just need to learn to see it. This mindset is a game changer when connecting Ss to nature! https://t.co/dQ2QM5l6oo
I know we are from a wide variety of place, but are there organizations/ideas people can share that can help to bring some "nature" to the concrete jungles out there? #kinderchat
Here in the Fraser Valley, we have a group called "Agriculture in the Classroom" which provides resources for projects like growing potatoes, planting daffodils, raising chicks. #kinderchat
I was so mad when I walked by a preschool and they had landscapers outside planting plants a couple of years ago. They should've done a unit on plants and let the kids plant them instead. Missed opportunity #Kinderchat
A friend suggested I reach out to a local gardening center or garden club to ask for help creating planter boxes. Haven't yet, but thinking about it. #kinderchat
It’s their community. Their right to be in that community. Our students know nearly every inch of our industrial neighborhood and it makes them better citizens. #kinderchat
Definitely should. This is something Home Depot helped our school with. Another year, another T's husband made planter boxes for the Ss in VPK so they could do a garden too. #kinderchat
And that is why I asked :) I think sometimes people forget that kids need that connection to where they are, whether it's an industrial area of a green belt. The sense of place and belonging is SO important #kinderchat
I’d be careful about this perception. As a preschool director in urban of all urban lands, we would love our kids to help plan and execute something like this, but have the reality of a landlord who hasn’t relented (yet). #kinderchat#MyMiniCaution
As we draw to a close tonight, what is one thing you can do with your students outside this week, even in the chillier, wetter, snowier weather? #kinderchat
One thing I love to do with my students is to just play outside. It’s important to remember that joy, and to allow them to have that joy. Especially on the swings! #kinderchat
I'll start! I want to get powder paint out with some paper in a drizzle and see if we can make rain art :) If it's a downpour though, it won't work. #kinderchat
On Thanksgiving break this week here in Florida, it also never snows 🤣 So, if it's not raining we can explore pretty regularly during winter #kinderchat
I wish we could go sledding but we are not allowed. I am collecting shovels and buckets and different things we can take with us outside to play in the snow. #kinderchat
