Run by Iowa educators, #IAedchat is on Twitter the first, second, and third Sundays each month at 8:00pm CST. We have added #IAedchat LIVE to the fourth Sunday of the month at 8:00pm CST. This will take place in Google Hangout on Air. We will share the invitation and link to #IAedchat LIVE each month.
Hello #IAedChat Kim-Kindergarten at Benton Community checking in for a bit while taking a break from writing my student valentines...10 Things I Love About You! I love doing this each year!
Hey all! Finishing up a season of Bobcat basketball today and reminiscing about how quickly time has gone the past five seasons! How quickly time flies! #BentonCSD#IAedChat
Putting a plug in for our first Leader Day. If anyone is able to join us, we are very excited for our students to share their voice and their leadership journey! #iaedchathttps://t.co/xNEcnB5dCq
A1: The amount of time in a day is outside of our circle of control. What we can control is how we spend our time. Great reminder that we are in charge of our lives. #iaedchat
A1. It is important to use our time intentionally.
Is this use of my time:
Good for my family?
Good for my learning?
Good for the kids in our school?
#IAedChat
A1: Focus on what you can control, model what you expect, spend each and every moment of everyday as an opportunity to learn, grow, and try to improve in all aspects. #workharderthaneveryone#IAedchat
A1: We all have 24 hours. Some things must take priority to others. I get to decide which priorities overcome other things that could occupy my time. #IAedChat
A1: Love this quote! It makes me think of how we get from each destination in discussion throughout our subjects based on student needs with a few layovers for personal connections or rowdy passengers 😉 #IAedChat
A1. It is important to use our time intentionally.

#IAedChat
A1 Even though time is finite, we have the individual capacity to determine the focus of our actions and impact of our work within the time we have #iaedchat
A1: Time is what you make of it. Where you spend your time, so there lies your heart. If you audited your time would it be where you want your heart to be? If not, you can change it. #IAedChat
A1: I am successful when I am intentional about how I use my time and use my time with intentionality. We all have 24 hours in the day and make choices as to how we spend it. #iaedchat
Great question, Nick. Many times they’re driven by my schedule. I need to make more of it by looking at the bigger picture. I need to prioritize my to-do list because it’s always being added to. #IAedChat
A1: I don't think we can manage time, so saying time management is a myth. I think we have to use our time to maximize out actions with strategic planning and working smarter. first timer to #iaedchat - Matt from MA, digital learning Director
I listened to a GREAT podcast about this last week. The discussion revolved around the importance of scheduling email time during the day to increase efficiency and focus on the vision/goal...#IAedChat
A1. We must use our time wisely. Time is a precious element which each person is given during their lives, you are the pilot, the creator of your story. Fill your book with joyful memories! #iaedchat
I try to prioritize, but I am always willing to stop what I’m doing to have a quick chat with a student or staff. Relationships are at the top of the to-do list! #IAedChat
A1 Instead of wasting time complaining about how busy you are- prioritize your time to maximize the impact you can have on doing what is best for kids #IAedChat
Need to remember/realize that this quote applies much differently to students. In all reality, their days (time) are slotted out for them from about 7:30-5:30 most days, esp. at HS level. Which is why homework policy matters; need to let kids be own "pilots" at home. #iaedchat
A1: I guess if you doubt that quote you feel stuck. Being overwhelmed it a terrible place to be (even if you're right). Gotta get out of that space. It's really hard sometimes. #iaedchat
A2 There is always going to be work to do-prioritize the work you do that has a lasting impact on kids- paperwork, bulletin boards, email can all wait, go out and make a difference! #IAedChat
Q2: Great question. If we stand by and look at everything we think we need to get done, we'll never get done what is we need to with fidelity. #iaedchat
A2: This quote makes me think that if something isn’t a focus you shouldn’t make time for it… for which I agree mostly.
What about the things we don’t want to do but have to because of… adulting? Grocery shopping, sickness, cleaning, jury duty, etc. :) #IAedChat
A2: Again, focus on the things that you control...don't be afraid to ask for help and reach out to those you look up to for advice #lifelonglearner#IAedchat
#IAedChat A2: This is so true! Sometimes it is easy to lose sight of our main goal (creating fun and meaningful lessons) when we are swarmed by so many curriculum constraints.
#iaedchat A2: Focus and efficiency are crucial in using our time to the best of our abilities. However, you need to be flexible especially when it comes to your relationships and how you value them. .
A2: We must consistently monitor ourselves and conduct audits of our time. Are we investing where we need to be? If not, figure out why not and make a change. #iaedchat
A2: We have this notion that we have all this time. We know it’s not true. It’s finite. Use the time you have. Say what you need to say. Do what you need to do. Lead fearlessly. Get the good stuff done. #IAedChat
A2. We need to stop worrying so much about time constraints, and worry more about what our focus in life should be about! What is your who, what, when, where and why for your focus in life? #iaedchat
I feel like I’m in the game Frogger sometimes with my schedule! :) Can’t just stand there staring at my list or I’ll get hit by a bus or fall off a log! #IAedChat
A2 Establishing focus translates to establishing our priorities. When we determine what's important, then we are able to make valuable contributions and make a lasting impact on our Ss #iaedchat
A2. In elementary, we put an emphasis on doing each subject for x amount of minutes. That sometimes hinders the learning/ growing because we are more focused on sticking to a schedule rather than inspiring concepts/tasks. #iaedchat
A2: (loving the quotes!) Determine what your focus is for the day/hour/am/pm and then you can take control of what you need to conquer...do not just spin in circles (and I’ve spun, baby!😳) #IAedChat
A3: Without question, I struggle with Habit 5: Creating Barriers to Entry. I want to be accessible at all times and am a helper by nature, but this sometimes gets the best of my productivity. So many interruptions. #iaedchat
A2. In elementary, we put an emphasis on doing each subject for x amount of minutes. That sometimes hinders the learning/ growing because we are more focused on sticking to a schedule rather than inspiring concepts/tasks. #iaedchat
A3: I struggle with Habit 5: Create barriers to entry. I tend to get frustrated when I can’t be “everybody’s everything” which I know shouldn’t bother me. It’s hard when you’re in service and can’t immediately meet the needs of the people you lead. #IAedChat
A3: #5 is way too hard for me. I want Ts to know they can come to me whenever they need me. I get texts, tweets, snaps - you name it.
I do give them a heads up when I'm in 'emergency only' mode. #iaedchat
A3 Habit 1 is tough because it is on the To Do List because it is important to someone, I need to work on finding those high-leverage/high-impact moments #IAedChat
Referring to an earlier post. Where we spend our time reflects our priorities. If we are spending our time behind a closed door...Our priorities are perceived to be on ourselves... #IAedChat
Agree; however, we can get through it by being transparent about this from the start with our people. Something I've committed to and communicated to staff: I have removed email from my phone. If you need me after hours, Vox, text, or call. #iaedchat
A3: Habit 5- when someone asks if I "have a minute” I always say yes. I feel bad if I rush the conversation even if it’s making me late to my next stop. I don’t want those I serve to believe that I don’t have time for them. Tough balance. #IAedChat
This was the one I struggle with the most. I don’t set out enough and often try to make myself a pleaser and try to be everyone’s everything. Maybe I didn’t interpret it as literally a barrier to entry, but more of a speed bump. :) #IAedChat
A3. Habit 5 is the most difficult for me. I struggle to create barriers to accessibility. I have to shut my office door and tell my staff not to let me out until I’ve completed a task. I’d much rather be out, in the middle of everything. #IAedChat
A3: Create Barriers for Entry - The struggle is real! I want to say "yes" to in-the-moment service of students and teachers. It usually means whatever I was working on gets left for home. Trying to balance that pile. #iaedchat
Creating barriers to entry is definitely difficult...there is a fine line between having time to yourself and being readily available for coworkers & kids #iaedchat
A3: Creating barriers is hard for me. I want to be helpful, and sometimes this doesn't help build capacity. I'm working on that. Digitally, we are all so accessible. I've put my phone on "do not disturb" when I sleep so I'm not tempted to check emails as they come in. #iaedchat
A3.2: Here are my thoughts about struggles related to Habit 5. The more we are clear from the onset with our people about these barriers, the more successful we will be. People will respect barriers if we are transparent and consistent. #iaedchat
This is why we need to build Ts up. I'm constantly trying to bring them up to a level that will render my position obsolete. At the same time building myself up to a new level and new positions. #iaedchat
A3: I have a hard time with 8. I have a hard time letting others in. I don't delegate things out. Giving up control is very difficult for me, but I'm getting better. #iaedchat
A3 - absolutely Habit 5! Between staff, Ss, & their families — I try to give everyone what they need even if it means putting myself last (w/the sacrifice of my family sometimes too). Cell phones & social media in the classroom doesn’t make it easier to stay away! #iaedchat
We control our own destiny both as educators & as people – if you were regularly facing obstacles you don't like, in your class or in your life, start working to change it – life is short! #IAedChat
Removed to be present at home when I am at home. Developed communication protocol that I shared with staff. Need response in 24 hours = email, Need response in 1-2 hours = text, Need response NOW = call. Works well. #iaedchat
A5: Howdy #iaedchat I'd have to say Habit 5, creating barriers to entry. I have a hard time saying no, since I want to be helpful and get involved. So, it's important that I remember that NO is a complete sentence when I reach my capacity.
A4: Google calendar, coupled with reminders and my Apple watch are hands down my best time management tools. Make lists, use Reminders app, and quadruple check things are essential in my world. #IAedchat
A4: I survive with my Google calendar for reminders and a paper calendar for a laid out visual and to-do list. I also stay organized folders for my Google Drive and Gmail inbox. #GAFE#IAedChat
I have eighteen years of hard bound daily diaries which I used for my daily schedule...This year I moved into @googlecalendar for my schedule. My admin assistants have control of my daily calendar...I could not go back to a hard copy. #IAedChat
Great chat topic, I also thrive as a learner by applying what I learned. So, I am throwing it out that that I am goign to reflect on this chat and write a blog post about it to apply the learning tonight #iaedchat
A4 I still like my pen/paper calendar to sync all my calendars with scope/sequence (@AnnaUpah really likes it) and also text to tell my husband everything I forgot in the 5 minutes we talk to each other each day within the hustle and bustle! #IAedChat
A4: Going in a different direction, iTunes. Thinking back to Q3 - taking breaks is critical and if I am sitting too long I loose steam in my work so I take a walk around the school listening to music for 5-10 minutes and regain energy and get back to it #iaedchat
A4: I love my Google Calendar and often joke that if it isn't in there... It doesn't happen. The reminders on my watch are helpful! I, too, use a notebook to keep a log for each day. @Mrs_KFisher is rubbing off on me. #iaedchat
A5: I’ve noticed when we meet @BrianW1014 has this on his office wall and it seems productive. It’s a working to-do list that helps prioritize needs vs. urgency. #IAedChat
A5: Very much familiar with the matrix and have used it often in the past. It is great to use as a reference when feeling bogged down and like a hamster on a wheel. Define your tasks. #iaedchat
A5: Google Calendar paired with Inbox by Google. Extremely efficient in setting reminders, deleting/archiving emails and sending them back to me when I want them. #iaedchat
A5. b - this question reminds me of a quote a former secretary liked to use... except often times I find myself helping out with the emergencies in the end. See answer 3. Work in progress! #IAedChat
A5: Google Calendar paired with Inbox by Google. Extremely efficient in setting reminders, deleting/archiving emails and sending them back to me when I want them. #iaedchat
A5: I've attempted to use it from time to time (there are some apps also), but it was more cumbersome than what I was needing. However, the concepts are excellent and I still refer to them from time to time. #iaedchat
A5 - I have see this in a few forms and I find it helpful - even just to ask myself if what I am spending time on is getting the results back. I use one on impact vs. effort/time shooting for high impact with low effort #iaedchat
#iaedchat A4 Use Google sheets to break down my week into 30-minute segments. Called a 168-hour grid. An incredible time-saver. Very productive. Stole idea from @BrianCainPeak. This is tomorrow's grid
#iaedchat A5: I like this version! It is difficult to juggle so many things at once. I think it is important to do what helps ease your mind first. For some it may be lesson plans and others it may be a phone call or email.
A6: Well...that has became a larger challenge as the AD, but like most things in life, you have to prioritize and make time for things that are important to you...like this chat! #IAedchat
A6: I look at the needs of the districts I serve and gauge where I need to fill in my gaps in knowledge. I also try to make time for my passions and priorities. #IAedChat
A5 I was terrible at putting my family on the back burner, now I work on things after the kids go to bed, my time with them is too precious and too short. Thank goodness I’m a night owl! #IAedChat
A6: If I see something that is going to make me better as a dad, a leader, an educator- I invest in it. This includes taking time to unplug and rejuvenate (read, exercise, etc.), although this chat along with others rejuvenates my hope in the future for our kids. #IAedChat
A6: I prioritize my PD based on what I see I need to build for Ss (where I need to support them better). I am constantly building myself and looking for strategies to be communicate clearer or be more effective (in all areas). #IAedchat
A6: I am always looking for things that will help me to become the best dad/husband and educator that I can be. The order is important. Better dad/husband = better educator. #iaedchat
A6. I try to set personal goals (usually around 5 each day) and reflect on how they went at the end of each day. This shows me where I need to most grow. I also try not to have too many different focuses at one time. #qualityoverquantity#iaedchat
A6: Much like money, time is both valuable and limited and it must be protected. So I try to find the growth areas that will maximizes many areas - like becoming a better listener or finding ways to communicate better. #iaedchat
A6: Right now work gets priority, then grad school (admin degree), then other PD like Twitter. But taking time out for some great conferences this summer. #iaedchat
#IAedChat I'm curious even with a well managed schedule and getting timely information out in a timely matter, how do people deal with the unknown change to your schedule with out being pulled off task and loosing credibility with your people?
A7 #keyrocks is starting our week with sharing our learning from our 2 week passion projects!! Couple that with learning walks and we will have some deliberate and meaningful learning that will super charge us forward! #IAedChat
A7: Not let the Olympics distract me.... but really, remember that I am the pilot of my time. Choose my focus, and work hard to accomplish my task.
#iaedchat
A7: I will continue to look for ways to improve my time management and model my actions after those who have proven successful in areas I need to improve. #IAedchat
A7: I will definitely be looking at some of the tools and resources shared tonight to get things back on track - especially since they're going to spiral out of control if I don't. #iaedchat
#iaedchat A7: I will make sure to use google calendar, keep, and prioritize what I can. Relationships first will come first and I will look at the Eisenhower Matrix to help me manage. :)
A7: Continue to investigate how my time is being spent. If things can be automated, I will make it happen. Make time for what's most important and clearly define what's most important. #iaedchat
A7: Excited for learning walks, PL, and passion projects this week. Just emailed Ts to make sure they are aware of priorities for the week. Trying to remember how I can support teachers and their limited time with how I communicate. #iaedchat
#iaedchat A7: I will be doing a lot to cut out the stress. I will focus more on my students and worry less about emails/phone calls/meetings. I will also do a better job of delegating smaller tasks (Copies, Grading, entering scores) to my practicum student.
For sure. I have read a number of their books related to leadership and management. Great stuff. Lee's got a great podcast on iTunes: Creating Disney Magic. #iaedchat
