Thanks, Larry. is the best!
A1: Technology has open the doors and bridge the gaps for us to connect, share, & learn from other around the world.
Welcome everyone! Thank you so much for joining!
Hi Teresa, nice to see you!
A1: Tech has made the world a smaller place, by connecting one another in real-time and across traditional barriers.
A1: we truly are global citizens who communicate with anybody, anywhere, at any time
A1: Pace of communication was disrupted. Knowledge was "flattened" beyond the networks & other forms of comm.
A1: I have learned more by connecting through tech than any college class! It's all at my fingertips!
Hi Teresa! I am enjoying my summer, sleeping in, and getting caught up on some books.
A1: it allows us to share in real time (positive/negative, the good/bad/ugly)
"Global citizens" is such a great term and concept. Love it! https://t.co/8EQkCSz0be
A1: we truly are global citizens who communicate with anybody, anywhere, at any time
A1: It has given a voice to those who may not otherwise be able to have one (positive and/or negative)
A1 This last week has demonstrated that technology has transformed how we get unfiltered information and connects us all.
A1: The world has become a lot smaller. They have immediate access. We're creating the instant gratification generation
A1: it has helped as well as hurt. It's increased overall communication over time and made it easier to reach people.
Welcome, Scott! Great to have you here!
To me,the "hurt" is poor comprehension from online content versus print. https://t.co/86hsMgCHgW
A1: it has helped as well as hurt. It's increased overall communication over time and made it easier to reach people.
Amazing how amplified some voices have become. :) https://t.co/4qzx3Q3LTB
A1: It has given a voice to those who may not otherwise be able to have one (positive and/or negative)
Hello, ! I'm an elementary principal from South Dakota!
Welcome, Dan! So happy to have you here!
Our next question will begin in just 1 minute.
Hi Samantha! So happy to have you join us, tonight!
A1 tech has also increased prevalence of images- so many gifs, videos, jpgs. Visual & other literacies increasingly important
Hi ! Laura, Instr coach in KC, jumping into this awesome PLN.
insta-celebs. Although we can leverage these platforms to highlight authentic audience w/Ss
. No way! Thanks for joining in, Laura. So very honored!
A2: I used to set up an email distr. list for Ps. Now there's and to aid in comm. efforts
This has allowed for "glass" classrooms & for Ss to connect with authentic audiences. https://t.co/bBxpx5ABLG
A1: we truly are global citizens who communicate with anybody, anywhere, at any time
A2: Twitter: connects me to educators all over the world
A2: Twitter for the connecting, learning & Sharing! Instagram for sharing (like a snapshot of my life) Blogging - Sharing
I've never heard of "glass" classrooms, but I love that visualization! https://t.co/BXQWkJlKqJ
This has allowed for "glass" classrooms & for Ss to connect with authentic audiences. https://t.co/bBxpx5ABLG
A1: we truly are global citizens who communicate with anybody, anywhere, at any time
A2: Google/Google Classroom: interact with students/colleagues/etc.
Q2: Voxer and Twitter have been my main tools for communication. Just did . I'm now in 7 Voxer groups.
A2: Favorites include Twitter, Voxer, Periscope, Instagram, and Snapchat. All for different reasons and different purposes.
A2 Twitter hands down is my top go-to for online collab. So many meaningful partnerships have arisen from here
A2: I love and Google classroom to communicate w/Ss. Simple and easy to use. Knowing they are ones they'll check
Welcome, Susan! So glad you were able to join us, tonight!
google hangouts for mystery hangouts. Lots of conversation and collaboration
Absolutely! So happy to have you here, Lee.
A2: Twitter of course, I love for safe communication with Ss/Ps live
With Ss it is Google Classroom. ;-)
A2: Can't name another besides Twitter for effectiveness.
Love Mystery Hangouts! Welcome, Kimberlie!
Thanks, Larry. I’m happy to be here!!
A2: I am relatively new to Voxer (past few months), but enjoy getting to know people differently
Variety and purpose is key! There are so many different platforms available now! https://t.co/hKzp7XNISQ
A2: Favorites include Twitter, Voxer, Periscope, Instagram, and Snapchat. All for different reasons and different purposes.
I haven't used yet, but would love to try it!
Mystery Hangouts are very fun!
I am trying to embrace Periscope ...
A2: Not a huge FB fan, very limited use
Great Resources! I have to try Class Messenger!
A2: I also like and to stay connected with parents and students.
A2 Definitely twitter and voxer. I don't broadcast on periscope, but I enjoy connecting through others' scopes.
Snapchat seems to be the "hot" one among my middle school students
Definitely a different experience than other tools. Would love to know what groups you are in. https://t.co/E6q0nWRcYn
A2: I am relatively new to Voxer (past few months), but enjoy getting to know people differently
You will never go back to Remind or anything else after using it!
have never tried that, but it's on my list
Same here. I've learned from other teachers' scopes, but I don't see it as something I will do.
Our next Q is coming up in 1 minute.
I also use Class Messenger. Love it for ease of communication with Ps
Very interesting....I'd love to learn more!
I've become a bit of a addict
Hi, everybody. Joining the chat a little late.
A1: We are able to communicate with people worldwide. Gives immediate access to information.
Love Hangouts for mystery location and number as well as doing presentations.
I think you have to follow people that use it for learning & sharing...not those that share everything.
You have shared some pretty cool Smore Pages! I'm trying my first one for back to school!
A3 Email is the new snail mail. Especially with attachments. Yuck.
Hi Susan. Better late than never ;) So happy to have you here!
so many great pad lets out there!
A2 Twitter, Voxer, FB (many Ts are here, using pages/events a lot)-- are my mains. I'm exploring Snapchat for storytelling.
A3: Least favorite is email. It's overused, abused, inefficient, and just plain gross!
I agree! Email seems almost burdensome. https://t.co/Fj7ssq4cxH
A3 Email is the new snail mail. Especially with attachments. Yuck.
Must add which has helped collaborate with others.
Just sprinkle in a "reply all" and voila! https://t.co/iz0G2ca963
A3 Email is the new snail mail. Especially with attachments. Yuck.
Larry, I think you are on the ground floor of every cool piece of tech.
I've been having a lot of fun with Snapchat. I'd love to leverage it as a learning tool. https://t.co/Kua0ClaIL3
A2 Twitter, Voxer, FB (many Ts are here, using pages/events a lot)-- are my mains. I'm exploring Snapchat for storytelling.
Thanks, Cherie! That’s so cool that you’re trying Smore. You (and your Ss) will LOVE it!!
I agree about FB. It's gross on many levels. (no name pun intended)
A3: Any of them can turn into not my favorite if people post, share, and record everything.
A3: Facebook and email. Obsolete almost.
A2: Twitter for PLN (obv), for Ps, for my (HS) Ss.
I love Padlet for its versatility and ease of use.
Lol! I've been out of the classroom for 1 yr...no more distribution lists for me when I go back! https://t.co/apThAs3G29
A3 Email is the new snail mail. Especially with attachments. Yuck.
I use twitter daily & hope to use padlet for soliciting ideas. Works great with Ss.
Great point here! https://t.co/Kn6sDLBOG6
A3: Any of them can turn into not my favorite if people post, share, and record everything.
You download the app and start chatting. LOL You can find indiv people or ask to be added to groups.
A2: Twitter because it has allowed me to communicate with other educators and learn about new resources.
A3: SNAPCHAT!!! Ugh, I have no idea how to use it or what the heck it's purpose is! My friends hate me for not snapping! :(
Ha! I keep my ear low, that's for sure :)
Several teachers in my district (the ones with iPads) are using and loving it.
You're funny. I just have never really gotten into it. I limit my friends to who I really want connect with.
I don't like Snapchat myself. I see no point in it.
Absolutely great point! Welcome to , Philip!
I have got to get into this SnapChat thing! https://t.co/6PVNyBSqva
A3: Not a Voxer fan. I know people can't believe it but I can voice record a text just fine
A class Twitter account is indispensable for building global relationships and collaborations.
Love Twitter=140 characters!
which of the tools offers a viable alternative for reply all? Esp w/text heavy content?
I think it's all about the intonation and subtlety of the voice. Makes a world of difference. https://t.co/1NzIxtpQVW
A3: Not a Voxer fan. I know people can't believe it but I can voice record a text just fine
A3: Email is pretty whack now, but some people are very new to it.
A3: Email!! HS kids don't read it, that's why I only use and GClassroom to communicate w/big kids.
I personally would rather scan a line of text than push to hear all of the message.
Our next question will begin in 1 minute.
All my Ss use it. I have no idea!
ME EITHER! I think I am traumatized after a recent appraiser made negative comments about my voice, lol!
A3: Email because info can be out of date by time you view it. Especially if busy all day with teaching.
I am hot and cold with it. Hard to listen sometimes when in public. LOL
My aha: You can save your stories (like one I curated at ) to cam roll as vid. & share
I've met Ts who would strongly disagree about FB. Lots of PD resources shared among "groups"
I've been wishing for to become more "approachable" for educators. https://t.co/Z047ncF5KP
which of the tools offers a viable alternative for reply all? Esp w/text heavy content?
I too have issues with its usefulness.
Awww.......... That's mean!
You are in the wrong groups then. My Voxer tribe is awesome. Sorry someone was rude to you.
Agree with you Larry that a voice can make a big difference when it comes to intent.
A3b: Also on the list, school websites. I consider them to be information graveyards.
A4: Twitter=total game changer, how has it not?
Agreed. It could use some tweaks to make it better for us.
Agreed. That's awful! So sorry about that. :(
oh I don't disagree, just not for me.
A4: Because of Twitter & such I've been able to connect with CEOs of Edtech companies which in turn has let me grow!!
A4: It's allowed me to see many viewpoints, perspectives, etc. (world wide)
One of my Ss was similarly looking at that tool. Decided on a diff inquiry project
Padlet is like a virtual file cabinet. You can collaborate on it or pin things 4 urself
Just some polish on those rough edges. That's all!
A4: It had helped me to learn more about outlier tech. curriculum & learning styles that are out of the box.
Hi new here! Patricia from AKL, NZ on holidays so I can participate in this chat! :D
Most of my parents are on Facebook so that is the place to communicate with them Will be using it this year.
Welcome Patricia! So happy you could join in!
I agree. Not the place for posting anymore.
Q3: I have used the Google+ community Connected Classrooms Workshop to make connections for Mystery Hangouts.
I like Voxer for 1) project/event work. Can keep ideas bouncing/2) Explaining how-to to some one.
I found an awesome group of business educators on facebook just today!
A4: Becoming a "connected educator" has been the single most valuable thing I have done in my career.
A4: I have been able to communicate with Ps/Ts/Ss easier. I have been able to grow my PLN as well.
A4b: Sharing and collaborating with others helps keep me challenged, focused, and thinking positively.
It is so versatile and easy to use.
We should use what they are used to, right?
I have turned mine from personal to professional. Like it much better!
Such a game-changer for me! https://t.co/rfAuAx5rSE
A4b: Sharing and collaborating with others helps keep me challenged, focused, and thinking positively.
Can anyone join? Is it an open group? Thnx!
A4: Twitter-I sought out other educators' advice, been exposed to PD opportunities, & feel safe in this learning process.
A4 I mean...oops https://t.co/3wLneXKr2V
Q3: I have used the Google+ community Connected Classrooms Workshop to make connections for Mystery Hangouts.
oh? I mean it's worth looking at.
If only more of my colleagues could see this. I constantly tell them of what things we have learned and done.
A4: Has someone already posted the sketchnote graph about Twitter? That's how I feel lol.
Wow...never thought of it as a safety thing, but I totally get that! Great point!! https://t.co/LXJIg6pS4C
A4: Twitter-I sought out other educators' advice, been exposed to PD opportunities, & feel safe in this learning process.
A4: Developed my own PD Via Twitter. Lots of resources suggested via diff PLN's
A4: I met through my PLN on Twitter! That speaks volumes!
Rockin! Exploring the tools so you can have a wider array of options for student learning.
Our next question will begin in 1 minute.
There's actually a setting where you can hold it to your ear to listen like a call
I do like it better for professional vs. personal use.
A4b: You can connect and grow with ppl across the world & bring new knowledge into the classroom.
A4: I especially enjoy infographics
A3 least favorite tools are ones that are clunky and/or spammy!! Aggh!!
hi I got to work in my class for the first time today and am a little late but so excited to join y'all! Thanks
That's all I use FB for anymore, the prof stuff. I'm off it for personal.
A4: Became a connected educator and connected my ss with classes out there
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!! Welcome, Sara!!!
Oh guys, yes, it was awful, but I will get over it. It made me realize people will nit pick over anything to try & intimidate
It allows for more emotion & personality in your words.
A4: Allows me to stay current on various PD. Communicate with people worldwide to get various perspectives.
Joining a little late, but better than never...
Yes! Why are these so disastrous? https://t.co/qOeasUACiQ
A3b: Also on the list, school websites. I consider them to be information graveyards.
I will find to find that! I have gotten strange looks!
Absolutely! Sometimes freaks them out when I start talking about cool filters. ;P
I have made my Twitter for professional connections from personal as well
THEY are the one with the problem for sure!
I completely agree with you, Teresa! I sound like a broken record but &@voxer have changed my life
A5: that we "hide" behind it. We still need face to face communication and interaction.
A6: people can misinterpret what is said
. Welcome, Chris! An here for sure! Honored.
A6: sometimes the "news" you get is not what is really happening
oh I didn't know there was an extension ... learning learning learning!
A5: Work-life balance can become skewed, since people can be reached 24x7. Ephemeral sharing leads to abuse & poor judgement.
Be sure to adjust notifications in settings so not buzzing/beeping at u. 🤓
Q4: They allow me to reach out to other teachers and groups to gather new ideas and methods for my classroom.
A5 figuring out much/little to share about your "personal" beliefs. Where is the divide or limit https://t.co/nK6blbLtvd
Welcome to Thank you for joining!
A5: Equity becomes an issue sometimes. Not everyone is able to connect.
A5 Popping in late. Need 2 be critical of what u read & resources, also people r anonymous as no consequences 4 what's said
A5:Using same sources of information leads to a less than cutting edge mindset.
A5: The nonverbal communication "stuff" and misinterpretation because of not being able to hear the tone of voice.
Sorry.....my A6 should have been A5. So excited to answer, got ahead of myself!
Welcome to ! Great conversation, tonight.
A5: Someone could misinterpret what you meant.
Oh, Laura! I've never thought of voxer for project mgmt but it makes sense
The chrome extension is awesome cuz u don't have 2 leave the pg.
Yes, definitely this.... https://t.co/gxyhhO4Np5
A5: The nonverbal communication "stuff" and misinterpretation because of not being able to hear the tone of voice.
Ha! I happens to the best of us :P
Amen! https://t.co/Gn79Uiro1m
A4: Becoming a "connected educator" has been the single most valuable thing I have done in my career.
A5: Once it's out there, it's not coming back. Have to teach Ss this.
Our next question will begin in 1 minute!
LOL I am a bit "high energy",
A5.2: Serious - I have a hard time unplugging because of Fear Of Missing Out on something RAD.
I would have to totally agree!! It has been a game changer!
Epic night! You definitely helped take it to a whole other level. Thanks so much!
Welcome to We are glad you're here!
A5: Sometimes its applications are not obvious in class, appraisers do not see.
A5: For me as it relates 2 Twitter, always think about is it good for me or good for my Ss. Both is ok but strive 4 balance.
You have to learn it is ok to walk away to unplug & enjoy what is around you!
Thank you, Cherie! I've been meaning to join bc Larry is so awesome and the stars aligned tonight!
A5b lack of critical media literacy can be a pitfall on soc media. Ask: whose message, for what purpose and profit?
A5: It's sometimes a lonely world when you teach an elective and don't have a PLC at school. Twitter changes that!
Also good 4 ppl like me who always have 20 tabs open. I have a problem.
A6: Digital citizenship...digital citizenship....digital citizenship
A5: You myst be very careful and mindful of what you put out on social media. Respect and safety at all times.
A6: Use as teachable moments. It can be hard as an educator because you want to choose the right words, but don't ignore it.
Agreed. It is important to teach Ss the pitfalls of social media as well.
A4: Allows me to stay current on PD. Gain different perspectives and communicate with other educators.
A6: Warn Ss of what they may encounter. Open lines of communication so Ss can express feelings without fear of judgement.
A6: I don't know that we can necessarily prepare them for this.
Very cool! Thank you for sharing with us!
A5c Yep! Btdt! and speaking of which...all the acronyms! (Been there, done that) https://t.co/VNTElCVTOp
A5: The nonverbal communication "stuff" and misinterpretation because of not being able to hear the tone of voice.
A6: Is the point to teach kids to avoid viral content?
A6b: Strong lessons in digital citizenship should aid in school, but Ss will bring the outside world in.
Especially difficult since the environment seems to be changing daily, right? https://t.co/zMzVtelrfL
A6: I don't know that we can necessarily prepare them for this.
wowee, Julie ~ I am fangirling right there with you! I save all the sketchnotes I see!
I have to agree. This is their world now. Just help them navigate.
A5: I try to be positive and avoid falling into the trap of criticizing others. We should be ambassadors for our schools.
A6: Teach them to block what they do not need or want to see (inappropriate). Teach them to filter what they post.
A6 That's a hard one to answer. All need to know words matter even if they don't know who said them..
A6: we have to model for students and teach them skills/strategies
We will take them all! Lol! Sharing is caring and resources are great! Thank you!
I think it's all of our world. We consume viral and sometime inappropriate content too.
A6: We need to model & teach respect for oneself & others. It all starts with respect.
A6: Concerted long term teaching will do more than taking away all things tech.
I recently heard the quote, "The best filter is the one between Ss' ears." https://t.co/Q3xPfZBkxj
A6: Teach them to block what they do not need or want to see (inappropriate). Teach them to filter what they post.
Like the park keep it clean, and picked up. Take care of it so you can enjoy it years down the road.
Yes, yes, and yes! https://t.co/yQKWvyPwtm
A6: Concerted long term teaching will do more than taking away all things tech.
Great analogy! https://t.co/rxaV5ros4F
Like the park keep it clean, and picked up. Take care of it so you can enjoy it years down the road.
Would love to know if somebody has a great presentation for HS students to start the year
A6: Who has the answer to this one? This intimidates me.
Better late than never! Thank you for joining!
A6: As in the real world, teach them to be kind, caring and respectful in their use of social 6.
Yes, I meant we remember a world before it, where they are digital natives.
A6: include social media in instruction, use videos/news/articles/etc.
I've got some resources. I'll send a few things your way, after the chat. https://t.co/qykrgzaKCo
Would love to know if somebody has a great presentation for HS students to start the year
A6: I also like the shift fm "digital citizenship" to just "citizenship," b/c that's really what it is (just in a dig. age.)
Teach students to be kind and respectful when using social media.
Q5: There is no break between home and school when you are always "connected." Must set rules/expectations early.
A6: values and critical thinking
Our FINAL QUESTION of the evening is coming up in 1 minute!
I have my Ss create these and post them around the school. They have to design their own.
I agree. "Don't be a jerk" applies in any medium. https://t.co/vw965L3a7X
A6: I also like the shift fm "digital citizenship" to just "citizenship," b/c that's really what it is (just in a dig. age.)
Great activity! https://t.co/buc8cseelS
I have my Ss create these and post them around the school. They have to design their own.
Q5: People lose the ability to actually talk to eachother. Keyboard filter can affect empathy & common sense at times.
A6: Model critical thinking and use age appropriate social media as teachable moments.
A6: I love the book, "It's complicated".
Absolutely! It is character education for today's student. https://t.co/l5kAJ1m7O2
A6: I also like the shift fm "digital citizenship" to just "citizenship," b/c that's really what it is (just in a dig. age.)
A7: Use these newer tools the 'right' way and model best practices for your Ss and others.
I don't know about anybody else but I'm exhausted from keeping up with this awesome chat tonight!!!
A7 I think new and old forms of communication build community by sharing what's happening & celebrating together
thanks! I am trying to get my hands into Good Inquiry books!
A7: Love using school/class hashtags to celebrate successes/build community. Even think a Snapchat geofilter wld be amazing!
A7: We can build communities of support & encouragement which expand beyond traditional boundaries & deepen our relationships
What will be the next BIG social media platform?
Our students are probably using it already!
https://t.co/bap4or5Ejm
oops meant primary https://t.co/mN9mveOD4G
Have this poster in our school ... Was a focus when students working with tech, great for primar and junior
. first step for many Ts is 2 acknowledge the link is there. Signs like this aren't helping https://t.co/2yqW1ub6be
A7: It helps showcase instantly the positive things that your classroom is doing as well as learn from others.
A7: model....teach......model......teach.......listen to their questions, be comfortable talking about the uncomfortable
A7: Model the way the tools need to be used. Share positive & celebrate each other!
A7 I see these tools as ways to let parents and community into the classroom locally and make the Ts lounge global
so many great thinkers and sharing tonight on !
This is the value of educational Twitter chats that our colleagues need to see.
Thanks, Susan! I’m glad you like them. :-)
A7: Twitter to trend positive happenings in school and get the community involeved ex; for my new school! :)
I can't believe I forgot one... ;-)
A7: Invited ps to skype from work to describe what they do. For topic "Ourselves" so we get to know our com. Better
Great idea and way to bring Ps into the classroom! https://t.co/kcz1rOZgFd
A7: Invited ps to skype from work to describe what they do. For topic "Ourselves" so we get to know our com. Better
Me too, Lee. I appreciate you sharing them with us!
That's such a great idea! https://t.co/tC6tTsjluT
A7: Invited ps to skype from work to describe what they do. For topic "Ourselves" so we get to know our com. Better
A7: It is a great opportunity to work with others to make positive changes in our world as we did with victims of Fort Mac
Lol, me too and I'm one of the moderators!
A7 it connects home and school which is a positive for parents, teachers and the community
Loved this chat! Have a great night!
Great chat everyone! A special thanks to each and every one of you for your voices.
Thanks again . is becoming a favorite chat!
Thank you for a great chat! Stay connected, keep sharing and never stop learning!!
thanks Teresa! I'll read it after the chat. :D
I'm glad you like them, Sara. It’s my pleasure to share! :-)
A7: Model the way to use the tool to provide positive promotion for your school and activities occurring
Hope to see everyone again in 2 weeks!
What a creative way to use video chat. I am inspired to try this for our upcoming year. https://t.co/1P7PN9a2tg
Great idea and way to bring Ps into the classroom! https://t.co/kcz1rOZgFd

Honored, Scott. Thanks so much.
