Welcome to tonight's chat! I am Diana Gill, Instructional Tech Coach from
And I am and Pam O’Risky, eLearning Coach for

Let’s start with intros! Shout out who you are & where you’re from! Lurkers let us know you are there.
Hi! Jim Kowalski, SACS tech coordinator.
Greg here. Northwest Indiana. K-5 tech coach at Kankakee valley schools.

had an awesome casual style chat a few weeks ago. I loved it!
GREAT to see the dull guy!
Q1: As a tech leader (coach) how do you make yourself visible to teachers and students?
Hey Chantell, Technology Director from MSD of Steuben County here
Hello! I'm Molly Rupert with hanging out here in SW IN
Good evening, friends! Keshia from ! Watch for Q's from & . I'll be adding to the convo w/ u!
Hello Chaters -- Curt Schleibaum, Tech Ed at Seymour Checking in
Nice to have you tonight!
A1: I try to get out to each building as often as I can but I am always available by email, hangouts and of course twitter.
R1: Dig in alongside my T's. Get my hands dirty. Do the work w/ S's, T's, & A's. Build relationships beyond tech talk.
Beginning this sem, I am blocking specific times for every building. Trying for a more predictable physical presence.
Anyone feel comfortable walking in to some Ts classrooms and more nervous about others?
Same here. Traveling PLCs
That's a great way to make yourself visible! https://t.co/q13qfYT9tc
R1: Dig in alongside my T's. Get my hands dirty. Do the work w/ S's, T's, & A's. Build relationships beyond tech talk.
R1 When I was still in the bldg, I'd ask if I could do dropins. I hung out in the Ts' lounge at lunch to hear what they were doing
R1. Become very approachable, always make time when asked for help it may be the only chance you have to foster the relationship.
A1: offer to help w non-tech too. Build the trust that you're there to help.
R1: Showcase work in classrooms, even when you're not directly involved. Also love that has a reg lunch n learn schedule
Q2: What are some things tech leaders can do to understand the culture, teachers, and students in a building?
Some classrooms are definitely more inviting and easy to invade!
Hanging out in the Ts lounge? You are brave!
Early in the year, yes. Not so much now https://t.co/HWvJYZAMOs
Anyone feel comfortable walking in to some Ts classrooms and more nervous about others?
one problem can be that T rooms are locked. Hate disrupting
yes. some rooms are harder to go into than others https://t.co/2tQn0tcYY1
Anyone feel comfortable walking in to some Ts classrooms and more nervous about others?
R1 Being at the district level was a little more challenging to get to know bldg colleagues and what they were doing
Great idea :) I'm sure you are a rock star at this!
Like to hear more about his lunch n learn https://t.co/P26bFShNHX
R1: Showcase work in classrooms, even when you're not directly involved. Also love that has a reg lunch n learn schedule
R2: Make yourself a PART of the culture. Ask Q's and actively seek T, S, and A input. They can provide info that you don't know.
R1: Have fun too! Taught my Ts how to install bitmoji at the start of a PD… we're all people
R2. As a T I love to eat lunch among my Ss it's amazing what they will tell you in the non classroom setting
LOL ...yep, I even brought my netbook with me! I worked with great folks and they tolerated me!
R2: Talk to Ts/Ss/As, initiate conversations, but don't forget to listen! Build trust by acting on suggestions/concerns
R2: LISTEN to the Ts struggles and frustrations, and don't brush them aside. These are legitimate concerns to the Ts
That's when I started my first book club blog and we concluded with a face-to-face chat
A2- Be there and follow their social media engagement. talk to people (what a concept) :)
Q3: Why is it important for leaders to remember the tasks of the teacher?
R2: I am still in the classroom 4 days a week so I am building relationships with Ss and Ts. The more I can model the better
I am the Instructional Coach for Frontier School Corporation.
A3 I try to keep the Ts in mind with decisions so as not to create more work for them if possible https://t.co/wEBd4ADVpR
Q3: Why is it important for leaders to remember the tasks of the teacher?
A2- along with listening, always follow through. Always reply with email and make people feel important and empowerd. Leadership
He does one each month in each building in district. Sits through all lunches in lounge. Ts can ask Qs, or
R3: If you can't remember the tasks of the teacher, you lose all relevance. Instead of a peer, you become a "tech person."
That follow through is VERY important. Get them help ASAP! https://t.co/7BLbumwRXp
A2- along with listening, always follow through. Always reply with email and make people feel important and empowerd. Leadership
sometimes he has a scheduled topic based on building or district initiatives
R3: As coach, we don't need to be another person piling things on the plate. If we don't recall the T life, that can easily happen
R3: It's easy to forget once you leave the classroom.Every class is different-don't assume you know. Ask, listen, support, repeat.
R3 Even if you've only been out of the CR for 2days, you're out of the classroom. U must respect ur colleagues' time (or lack of)
Does he bring the lunch too? https://t.co/vykzUbu1kt
sometimes he has a scheduled topic based on building or district initiatives
R3- remembering your roots makes your suggestions more realistic; T buy-in easier
Just hit a chance to drop in
Good evening and ! It's been awhile!
thanks for joining us tonight!
R3: It's a hard job! If were not empathetic, it doesn't matter how great our tech ideas are.
R3: Ts are leaders in the school. They are pushing Ss to new levels every day. Important to keep them in mind at the top levels
So what are some strats that you all employ to balance the Ts work load and Admin objectives and vision?
So happy you've joined us!
No, we just eat our packed or school lunches. But I'm thinking cookies/dessert would sweeten the deal for some Ts :)
R3: respect their needs; not force a "solution" just to be offering something
That's the truth! Homemade veggie soup is my plan!
This is so true! Great Point. https://t.co/GhNi4HMTyG
R3: As coach, we don't need to be another person piling things on the plate. If we don't recall the T life, that can easily happen
awesome keep up the great work!
Q4: How do you communicate a shared vision for the use of technology in the classroom?
Make T's a part of the visioning/goal setting. This increases buy-in. Ensure that it isn't just something extra(value).
A4 I do the best I can to model for the Ts https://t.co/DAgBDGiOBO
Q4: How do you communicate a shared vision for the use of technology in the classroom?
R4: Modeling in my training sessions.
just joined the chat Lisa Boeglin 2nd grade teacher Evansville
Agreed. It becomes more and more evident how important building level leadership is to cultivate that culture
R4: It's important to model how tech can accelerate learning but the driving force is pedagogy...stolen from
R4: Don't build the vision alone. Build with Ts and continually evolve the vision. Forever a moving target
Welcome, Lisa! Glad you could join us tonight!
R4. Open to all tech committee & building digital / in person sharing community within school rewards 4 sharing to get Ts talking
R4: key is shared! Start w/ Ts and collaborate, let Ts demo and pitch to other Ts
R4: Create a clear vision and go for it. Admin and coaches need to model and keep supporting along the way. Vision/goals are key
R4:My schools set a vision with teachers for tech integ. Also give lots of practical examples of how to accomplish these goals.
Dialogue-finding the overlap genuinely recognizing Ts' accomplishments & encouraging As to model the work. https://t.co/1IR97nNAy3
So what are some strats that you all employ to balance the Ts work load and Admin objectives and vision?
A4: Model it in everything you do (meetings, support, training, communications...) https://t.co/npUwHVW6Mw
Q4: How do you communicate a shared vision for the use of technology in the classroom?
Rewards 4 sharing is a definite plus. Many Ts are afraid, but get a few talking and it builds momentum https://t.co/UKoTTowG6c
R4. Open to all tech committee & building digital / in person sharing community within school rewards 4 sharing to get Ts talking
Seems like we all agree Ts need to be part of process, so the root prob might be what does it take to energize them to change?
Love that question and working on it!
Show value in the change. Not that it's tech or a fad or cool...but that it is fundamentally better
i think what will energize Ts is to see examples of Ss learning, w/o seeing benefit will never try in classroom
KEY! District/building/T goals should have something in common--model tech making Ts life easier https://t.co/lKzYbPdrFY
Dialogue-finding the overlap genuinely recognizing Ts' accomplishments & encouraging As to model the work. https://t.co/1IR97nNAy3
So what are some strats that you all employ to balance the Ts work load and Admin objectives and vision?
Also, don't force too much at once. The change won't happen over night...or even in one school year!
Q5: How can we, as tech leaders, use and gather teacher feedback so that current classroom experience continues to guide us?
when it is fundamentally better, like a 1st grader explaining their thinking shows great value! https://t.co/WrMLEhx8Q7
Show value in the change. Not that it's tech or a fad or cool...but that it is fundamentally better
reading taht book right now too. It is the book club book right now
But there also needs to be expectation from leadership. the un-energized will claim they see Ss learning without tech
Modeling, ongoing support and communication, relevance. No 1 and done PD or training
A5: we must get into classes, see what ??s Ts are asking, find answers, but continue to model to that it constantly guides
Can't make people change, but can inspire them to want to. Lift up awesome S work produced from +change https://t.co/WYnOCf7c7a
Seems like we all agree Ts need to be part of process, so the root prob might be what does it take to energize them to change?
In my school districts, yes. They are an integral part of the team and determining where we want to go.
Gotta find that hook or spark to set them on their own learning path.
totally agree, encouragement is big, but sometimes there is a place for a straight up "you need to try this"
How do you communicate that expectation without pushing too hard...fine line... https://t.co/QcpXG7SpE8
But there also needs to be expectation from leadership. the un-energized will claim they see Ss learning without tech
I learn so much when I ask Ts what concerns them about coaching process. Ts give me honest answers and we build trust.
A1: Eat lunch with teachers to form relationship, PDs & mini-PDs, made request form, observe lessons & projects, email, send ideas
100% agree. Make it about the amazing student learning/possibilities https://t.co/GwTqj18CBs
i think what will energize Ts is to see examples of Ss learning, w/o seeing benefit will never try in classroom
R5 Form Junkie here! You will never have feedback for the questions you never asked
They will see Ss learning w/o tech. We should emphasize good teaching 1st, Tech 2nd, when it is a best fit.
Strong pedagogy is at root of tech integration. Our vision to innovate, create, build skills starts w/ that.
R5: The Ts want the Ss to see success. We need to give them/find ways to make that happen.
A5: surveys, observations, listen.
I argue for having T's represented in the process of setting expectations - committee, survey, something. Shared goals.
Focus on ONE change at a time with teachers.
agre Definitely begin by planting seeds. Seeds grow and most dont want to get left behind. The others need more modeling
Actually wanted to edit out "tech" after it had been sent :) good point.
Q6: Where can we model technology-enhanced learning experiences?
Lunch n' Learns are great way to build relationships & informally chat! Break barrier of formality!
We are first year 1:1. How long did it take your district to "get over" the leading with the tech/finding shiny tools?
I second that! Forms rock!
Well said, seeds also need the most support to eek growing https://t.co/DD1VQUZoIj
agre Definitely begin by planting seeds. Seeds grow and most dont want to get left behind. The others need more modeling
My schools are in a constant state of recovery. Tempting to play w/ new toys. But - how does this improve learning?
A6- We model in all we do! Be WITH Ts as they try something new. It is about the relationship. Build trust!
A6: I am trying desperately to get my Ts to see the value in twitter chats. Tough sell though. For now!
So many Ts need help with basic tech skills that I feel like I rarely get to the good stuff about how to transform teaching :(
Q7: How can we continue to seek new tech-enhanced ways to motivate and encourage students to succeed?
same conundrum in SACS. Some Ts are worried about falling behind. not enough depth
We are 2nd year 1:1 & still trying to narrow shiny tools to select few to use schoolwide.
We need to focus on building capacity of integrating skills, not just a device.
I have to duck out early. Thanks for a great chat . Pleasure as always
I'll know a culture shift has happened when the questions change.
Thanks for your help tonight!
We are starting a book study next week - What Connected Edus Do Differently. Build connectedness together!
How will they discuss? Twitter Chat? https://t.co/rNtOgEyo6U
We are starting a book study next week - What Connected Edus Do Differently. Build connectedness together!
I will be checking that out for sure. Thanks for the info!
A7: I love e Learning conferences for learning and sharing!
R7: Identify a problem. Show T's how tech can help solve that. Start w/ a need and find a meaningful way to help T's.
R7: Building that PLN every which way I can!
My Twitter PLC is a gold mine. A couple of chats & a webinar a week, which is perfect.
R7 Focus on being a learner yourself. Don't get comfortable with your skill set.
when we show Ss engagement and passion for what they are learning, then Ts who are hesitant jump in
Combination F2F & slow Twitter chat. Step by step together. 2 of my Ts WANTED to facilitate it! Woohoo!
My district has a group doing the bookclub together. I put goodies in mailboxes each week for some fun and we meet to close.
Your Ts are rockin' Good lead learner you are!
R7: Challeging myself to pursue new certifications has helped me grow too.
YES!!! Lead by example! https://t.co/YtLFCX0syc
R7 Focus on being a learner yourself. Don't get comfortable with your skill set.
Could not agree more. My Twitter PLN has given me more this year than most of my PDs in 10 years. https://t.co/R9ciD36gi8
My Twitter PLC is a gold mine. A couple of chats & a webinar a week, which is perfect.
is my other Must See TV chat.

Has anyone lead a google educator cohort?
Always inspired by my Ts & my PLN. Always learning & growing.
The more I build, the more overwhelmed with reading posts. I can't keep up and end up missing good stuff.
When a T has a question I can't answer, I learn a lot by finding the answer with them!
Loosely "lead" - they lead themselves! We used the Training Center resources. https://t.co/bKlv56regL
Has anyone lead a google educator cohort?
Tech use and learning about it comes down to comfort levels, https://t.co/7RJnH2WbXv w/o growing as a learner tech won't happen
It took me awhile to be ok with not seeing everything. I take what I can get!
hah yes that is what I mean! Facilitate?
You mean, you don’t have all the answers? Haha. Love to see people work together to solve the problem https://t.co/E1ZGCZjjsq
When a T has a question I can't answer, I learn a lot by finding the answer with them!
A7 Never become complacent with your skill set, as you only know the tools of today not tomorrow focus on being a lifelong learner
I know that feeling! There's no way to take it all in, so I just try to celebrate the nuggets I DO find. :)
I get a lot from EdWeb webinars. What is your source for webinars?
Thanks for the connected share! Didn't know about that one
Amen! https://t.co/dAb6l3ZcOB
A7 Never become complacent with your skill set, as you only know the tools of today not tomorrow focus on being a lifelong learner
I have seen a lot of great stuff on the site. https://t.co/SjX9ILyrpl
I get a lot from EdWeb webinars. What is your source for webinars?
The Five-Star Network has great material!
I used to really like SimpleK12 and LiveBinder webinars. Got disconnected with other work
A7: Got home late from Purdue's win. But here's my answer: continue collaboration amongst peers and visionaries. Try new things!
Wrap Up: Considering PD, what will be your New Year's resolution for personal as well as staff growth in 2016?
The series is excellent. production, interactive, always a takeaway I can use.
Sorry I was late, but it was great chatting for a bit w/ my peeps!! Have a fabulous Friday!!!
A7: Get out of the comfort zone and be adventurous! Help other Ts become more comfortable trying new te by things for the Ss.
So glad you brought that up! Remember you should sign up for a FREE class as part of partnership w/them. https://t.co/FiuhHZA4YD
I have seen a lot of great stuff on the site. https://t.co/SjX9ILyrpl
I get a lot from EdWeb webinars. What is your source for webinars?
R7: We could ask Ss what their needs are, find tech tools to help them reach that goal
Having trouble finding TIME for PD when it isn't built into the schedule. Ideas besides lunch n learn?
FOCUS! Focus on one piece at a time. Do it well. Then add another!
Webchat your perspective on questions posed
One of my schools is running a 2hr delay schedule. Ss have a speaker while teachers train from 8-10
I have taken 2 Five-Star courses - they are outstanding!
That is an interesting idea! https://t.co/HeKZ11APk1
One of my schools is running a 2hr delay schedule. Ss have a speaker while teachers train from 8-10
Totally agree. Need more people that want to work and learn to be better outside of 7:30-3:30 each day. https://t.co/zQvZcSEd4V
Exactly what we are doing here! More Ts need to join us here.
Optional afterschool unconference-keep it informal. Find good examples and capture them to share https://t.co/igrLXfdOCO
Having trouble finding TIME for PD when it isn't built into the schedule. Ideas besides lunch n learn?
One of my goals is to work on efficiency & prioritizing. One of me, lots of them.
We do PD every Wednesday for 45 min. My tech PDs are usually teacher-led breakout sessions.
Reach out more to find people that will text email - Have you seen this - I bet you cant do
the power of building a school network of expertise!
HS Prncpl has me do mini-PDs. TS come to me during prep for 20 mins of learning a topic or tool.
we are starting 1 PLC a month for tech integration PD- Late start days
Thanks for letting me hang out . Remember to have fun, life is too short to go with out it
Great conversation to kick off the new year! Thanks to all of our coaches -official and those who take on the work on their own!
- thanks for great chat - this re-energizes me (US?) for the tasks I (WE?) are passionate about
Tonight was great, as always! thanks for helping this newbie out!
about pedagogy first and it's a big shift to think how to teach so it's relevant and engaging to all Ss
Happy Thursday, everyone! Thanks for the ideas and inspiration
