#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
Welcome to #6thchat! Please introduce yourself, what you teach, and where! I'm Kristin, and I will be moderating tonight's chat. I teach ELA and SS in Lansing, MI. Welcome!
Questions will be tweeted out by @6thchat and RT by me. I forgot to upload the Qs to our website...my bad. Crazy time of year. Thanks for being here tonight! #6thchat
We are in the process of figuring out details for incentive on Friday and then incentive field trip on Tuesday and then PE field trip Wednesday and then Field day Friday #6thchat
A1) Digital citizenship is about responsibility for yourself and understanding that your words and actions impact others (including your own virtual image). Ss show respect to self and others. #6thchat
A1: Being a respectful person who is able to use their technology appropriately. It is shown by Ss who can hold themselves highly using technology #6thchat
I am not able to make the chat because I am finishing up my gift to my lovely students! I love this topic and will def visit for what you all talked about! #6thchat
A1: Digital citizens are Ss who operate their devices with respect and meet expectations. They exhibit on task behavior, share information when asked, and allow others to work on their device at any given time. Sharing at anytime = good digital citizen quality. #6thchat
A1 I try not to separate DC from classroom citizenship too much. I try to get the message appropriate and nice is right no matter the venue. Safety I handle differently because of risk. #6thchat
Digital citizenship is about representing yourself in the way that demonstrates respect for all. Generally, presenting yourself in the positive way you would in non-digital life. Not hiding behind a keyboard. #6thchat
A2) Digital leaders actively help other Ss, and use digital sources to uplift others, teach others, and learn from others, too. They position themselves as positive voices. #6thchat
A2: Leaders blaze a trail for successful citizenship and make efforts to curb disrespectful citizens from invading digital spaces. They set the tone and model what should done in the digital world and stand up to those who don’t. #6thchat

Absolutely! I am tweeting out a couple of resources in a few questions or so that you will enjoy if you haven't heard of them already! :) Suspense! #6thchat
A3) With the amount of social media and negative teen interactions, we need to create a corps of Ss who are willing and able to be a positive voice in the virtual world; I would anticipate Ss being more helpful and kind to one another online, and in person. #6thchat
A3: Building leadership qualities in students is important as is getting Ss to understand technology. Some changes I could see are adding more instruction and real life samples of digital leadership for Ss to exhibit #6thchat
A3 I hope to see students going out of their way to have a voice and stand up to make a difference in things they believe in while using digital spaces. #6thchat
I agree! Ss need tp be able to practice their citizenship, and leadership. They need to see that their voices matter, and that others are learning from them. #6thchat
When we work only to create DCs, we are building a culture of followers. DLs create an opportunity for Ts to no longer having to take the lead developing proper netiquette. #6thchat
A3: Moving Ss to digital leaders puts them is a position to help/support peers & creates a more positive culture within...classroom/school world #6thchat
A4) Learning spaces that encourage collaboration and communication between Ss needs to be cultivated so that Ss can more easily "show" one another the way digitally. #6thchat
This is an important point and also includes better educating our Ps and Admins to understand their digital worlds. Help Ps help Ss. I think we can do a better job at this. #6thchat
I think teachers still want to control and feel like they need to be totally comfortable before we let our students experiment. We need to take a chance in them and let them lead. #6thchat
A6) I think obstacles include helping our Ss understand the value and power in being a positive voice and influence for others. I think it's easy for Ss to get swept up into negative media and peer influence. Help Ss see "what's in it for me?" #6thchat
A7) This REMC site has great lessons for Ts https://t.co/WVRfmjNuOg Ss should witness us learning, too. It may mean showing and sharing w/Ss how we are positive voices in our circles of influence. Show how to do this via twitter, instagram, etc. #6thchat
A6: An obstacle I can see is having Ss take the leadership and run with it. Many are willing to consume the media, but when it comes to directing it some won't make the jump #6thchat

Oh no! I’m late. I’m Kristen, and I teach 6th grade physical science. I found your chat on this Great list! 5 pages of chats! I’m trying to hit all of them!!! #6thchat
A8) I am going to have Ss do some of the 21 things for Ss. I haven't done much of this this year. I know some Ss do it in tech classes, but that's not all Ss. Need to begin the conversation to discuss difference between our citizenship and leadership in digital world #6thchat
Not sure what’s wrong by Tweetdeck and computer are crashing on me. I guess it’s a sign for me to head out for the night. Hopefully I can join again next week and stay the entire time #6thchat
Welcome Kristen! I'm Kristin and moderate the chat! We are on Tuesdays at 9! Feel free to join us anytime! Would love to have you join our tribe! Crazy end of the year time! #6thchat
A1: Digital citizenship is understanding and managing your digital footprint. Knowing how to evaluate sources for biases and credibility. It is also understanding how to communicate globally with respect, compassion, and integrity. #6thchat
A8: I started my students blogging a few weeks ago! I will start that the first week of school. I use @flipgrid and would LOVE to connect with others My ss will also interview different science experts next year, especially when we talk about energy resources! #6thchat
A7: Be transparent. Let them follow you on Twitter so they can see appropriate posts and comments. I use @Schoology and we practice making appropriate comments. They see the comments that I make to them as well. #6thchat
A6: On one hand, I am terrified of putting my ss out there. On the other hand, I want them to be global citizens. I want to respect parents wishes who do not want their children posted, etc.I fear that parents don't know the benefit and/or understand the technology. #6thchat
I do an energy resource project where ss need to research (and interview experts) on energy resources. They need to choose their sites, analyze the information, even choose a graph that shows info that they want to convey. We practice doing each step together first. #6thchat
I agree...unfortunately the bad stories really spook Ps and they immediately want to restrict or forbid. I get it. We have to help educate Ps. #6thchat
