A1) Digital citizenship is about responsibility for yourself and understanding that your words and actions impact others (including your own virtual image). Ss show respect to self and others. #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:07 PM EDT
Welcome Jared! Glad to have you here! #6thchat

A1: Digital citizens are Ss who operate their devices with respect and meet expectations. They exhibit on task behavior, share information when asked, and allow others to work on their device at any given time. Sharing at anytime = good digital citizen quality. #6thchat
  • PrincipalSmart May 22 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Hello everyone! Glad to be here tonight. #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Do you have students who you would say struggle with being good digital citizens? I didn't ask this question tonight, but I'm curious. I do. #6thchat
    In reply to @SamReisman93
  • hoffmanteambret May 22 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A1 I try not to separate DC from classroom citizenship too much. I try to get the message appropriate and nice is right no matter the venue. Safety I handle differently because of risk. #6thchat
  • Mr_Lisek May 22 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Digital citizenship is about representing yourself in the way that demonstrates respect for all. Generally, presenting yourself in the positive way you would in non-digital life. Not hiding behind a keyboard. #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Welcome Michelle! Great to see you tonight! #6thchat

  • PrincipalSmart May 22 @ 9:11 PM EDT

A2: A digital citizen can consume media, and a digital leader can create and lead others to find it #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A2) Digital leaders actively help other Ss, and use digital sources to uplift others, teach others, and learn from others, too. They position themselves as positive voices. #6thchat

  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:14 PM EDT
Wow! Great news Monica! Congrats! Welcome and join in! #6thchat

  • Mr_Lisek May 22 @ 9:14 PM EDT

  • jared_hoemberg May 22 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1: DCs are Ss that show qualities and who are apart of the digital world. DLs show, integrate, and explore the digital world safely. #6thchat
  • rolandteach May 22 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2: Digital leaders model good digital citizenship & help other become digital leaders. #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:15 PM EDT

  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:18 PM EDT

  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A3) With the amount of social media and negative teen interactions, we need to create a corps of Ss who are willing and able to be a positive voice in the virtual world; I would anticipate Ss being more helpful and kind to one another online, and in person. #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:19 PM EDT
    #6thchat
  • SamReisman93 May 22 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A3: Building leadership qualities in students is important as is getting Ss to understand technology. Some changes I could see are adding more instruction and real life samples of digital leadership for Ss to exhibit #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:20 PM EDT
    Perfect! :) #6thchat
    In reply to @rolandteach
  • PrincipalSmart May 22 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3 I hope to see students going out of their way to have a voice and stand up to make a difference in things they believe in while using digital spaces. #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:21 PM EDT
I agree! Ss need tp be able to practice their citizenship, and leadership. They need to see that their voices matter, and that others are learning from them. #6thchat
    In reply to @SamReisman93
  • Mr_Lisek May 22 @ 9:21 PM EDT
When we work only to create DCs, we are building a culture of followers. DLs create an opportunity for Ts to no longer having to take the lead developing proper netiquette. #6thchat
  • rolandteach May 22 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A3: Moving Ss to digital leaders puts them is a position to help/support peers & creates a more positive culture within...classroom/school world #6thchat
  • 6thchat May 22 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Question 4 is on the slide! #6thchat
  • Mr_Lisek May 22 @ 9:24 PM EDT

  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A4) Learning spaces that encourage collaboration and communication between Ss needs to be cultivated so that Ss can more easily "show" one another the way digitally. #6thchat
  • SamReisman93 May 22 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A4: The big thing I can think of is more collaborative spaces for students to work together and share together #6thchat
  • PrincipalSmart May 22 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A4 We do not learn without opportunities and we might have to make mistakes. We need to get over the fear we have of digital worlds. #6thchat
  • rolandteach May 22 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A4: Sharing and evaluating the positive and negatives i order to improve. #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:27 PM EDT
This is an important point and also includes better educating our Ps and Admins to understand their digital worlds. Help Ps help Ss. I think we can do a better job at this. #6thchat
    In reply to @PrincipalSmart
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:29 PM EDT
Perhaps a first order of DL is with Ss helping to educate their Ps? Is that too unrealistic? #6thchat
  • 6thchat May 22 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Question 5 is on the slide! #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:30 PM EDT
    #6thchat
  • PrincipalSmart May 22 @ 9:30 PM EDT
I think teachers still want to control and feel like they need to be totally comfortable before we let our students experiment. We need to take a chance in them and let them lead. #6thchat
    In reply to @mrskochheiser
  • SamReisman93 May 22 @ 9:30 PM EDT
No, I think that sounds like a good idea! Great teaching experience to prove leadership and for Ps to learn #6thchat
    In reply to @mrskochheiser
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A5) Ensuring that Ss are good digital citizens comes first and this link has great lessons: https://t.co/btURjGZelY And then this teacher has written a book on it & here's her blog https://t.co/jlHNLjQOOW #6thchat
  • PrincipalSmart May 22 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A5 Right now we are learning to evaluate sources. With so much information available to us we need to decide what we can trust. #6thchat
  • SamReisman93 May 22 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A5: Using web sources like https://t.co/fxGU98a5is to create fake Twitters or Facebooks for literary/historical characters #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:33 PM EDT
And this is another large job--learning how to evaluate sources, as well as helping Ss learn to do this too as DLs. #6thchat
    In reply to @PrincipalSmart
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Lots of great modules in this for Ss to do. Our tech teachers use this. Ss enjoy the quests. #6thchat
    In reply to @rolandteach
  • rolandteach May 22 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A5: Allow DL to teach the connection between digital etiquette & real world to peers & adults. #6thchat
  • 6thchat May 22 @ 9:36 PM EDT

  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:36 PM EDT
    #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A6) I think obstacles include helping our Ss understand the value and power in being a positive voice and influence for others. I think it's easy for Ss to get swept up into negative media and peer influence. Help Ss see "what's in it for me?" #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A7) This REMC site has great lessons for Ts https://t.co/WVRfmjNuOg Ss should witness us learning, too. It may mean showing and sharing w/Ss how we are positive voices in our circles of influence. Show how to do this via twitter, instagram, etc. #6thchat
  • SamReisman93 May 22 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A6: An obstacle I can see is having Ss take the leadership and run with it. Many are willing to consume the media, but when it comes to directing it some won't make the jump #6thchat
  • rolandteach May 22 @ 9:38 PM EDT
A6: sometimes the DC education comes to late it need to begin before the reach 6th grade. #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:41 PM EDT
I think help Ss not to "fear" leadership is an important undertaking we all have. More want to follow than lead. Fear of failure, I suppose #6thchat

  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A8) I am going to have Ss do some of the 21 things for Ss. I haven't done much of this this year. I know some Ss do it in tech classes, but that's not all Ss. Need to begin the conversation to discuss difference between our citizenship and leadership in digital world #6thchat
  • SamReisman93 May 22 @ 9:49 PM EDT

A6: On one hand, I am terrified of putting my ss out there. On the other hand, I want them to be global citizens. I want to respect parents wishes who do not want their children posted, etc.I fear that parents don't know the benefit and/or understand the technology. #6thchat
  • KristenSevinsky May 22 @ 9:59 PM EDT
I do an energy resource project where ss need to research (and interview experts) on energy resources. They need to choose their sites, analyze the information, even choose a graph that shows info that they want to convey. We practice doing each step together first. #6thchat
  • mrskochheiser - Moderator May 22 @ 9:59 PM EDT
I agree...unfortunately the bad stories really spook Ps and they immediately want to restrict or forbid. I get it. We have to help educate Ps. #6thchat
